For heaven's sake SCC can't you say anything good or even a simple appreciation that OCD did a very good job!!! Always has something to say but nothing encouraging full of criticism. First of all, we aren't criticizing the coppers. Read the first line of our post - it says "Nice job." That's good AND appreciative. It was a good arrest. However, based on what we know, it really isn't that large of a bust. 2,800 pounds of weed doesn't even scratch the surface of what passes through this city on a daily basis. We've heard estimates of tens of tons a day that roll through Cook County on the way to other locations nation wide. We're just pointing that out.
As to the rest of the criticisms, we don't consider ourselves dog asses on the beat. We work damn hard for our money. We had more than a few arrests in the last decade or two. We know lots about lots of things, some of it even relating to police work. We chose to remain in the background lest we jeopardize our spots. We aren't eligible to run for FOP as we haven't got the required meetings yet this year, though that might change shortly as the election isn't until spring of 2008.

Where's the praise for the teams that actually did the work?

Great post. (sarcasm) What (some of us)we learned in grade school is right-if you write like an idiot, people will think you're an idiot. No, I'm not the typo police, but confusing "your" and "you're" about 18 times in a paragraph makes you look mildly retarded. Anyway 9:07, this blog is an outlet for the lowely, unconnected, working police. Something that we haven't had in the past-and that is "doing something." I understand why you Cline, Devine, and the rest of the connected people would be upset about the corruption on this department being publicly displayed. Deal with it.
Isnt it common knowledge that the Chicago Police Department gets these marijuana and cocain 'tips' from the DEA when its an amount that they feel is too small for them to handle? This wasnt the result of a longstanding drug investigation, it was spoon-fed to the 'qualified by phonecall' police by an outside agency that felt it was too much to let slide but too little for them to waste their time on it.

Im sure everyone realizes by now that the DEA phones in these busts. It has nothing to do with any 'phone call qualified' officers investigation and hard work.

To give some insight to the reasons why the Sergeants’ results have been delayed. There were to be no tricks – no trick questions –in the exam. No gimmicks - the answers were to be straight forward. However, due to the fact that the test was poorly written and carelessly reviewed by CPD personnel, there are some problems with the questions. A couple of issues: remember the question regarding the contact cards. The template answer was that information was left off, such as the other contact card # left off, the reason for the stop, gang affiliation, etc. However, one of the cards stated “no illegal activity observed”. Therefore, the stops should not have taken place in the first place. As we know, we can stop someone when we believe a crime has been committed, is about to be commit or is being committed. So the information provided on the cards failed to articulate reasonable suspicion and the left out information was irrelevant. However, the template answers had the missing information answer. Second, the second from last question regarding the traffic pursuit. The question asked what were the safety issues and whether the pursuit should be terminated. The template answer had the school letting out, time of day, kid’s present, residential neighborhood, etc. However, the pursuit involved a vehicle wanted for theft that had failed to stop a traffic signals; therefore, the safety issues were not relevant, the pursuit should have been terminated immediately because it’s prohibited by the order. The pursuit could have taken place at 2 in the morning and still must be immediately terminated.
So what is the big deal: well, the CPD personnel who reviewed the exam and surreptitously passed on the information to their “people” wrote the wrong answers down and looked to receive low scores. So they have discussed throwing out these questions in order to make sure their people score high. There were several questions that have caused a problem.

No, we can never get enough of ourselves. Geez. The point isn't that we aren't giving credit to the guys and gals who made the pinch - we did give credit. We'll even do it again:

The point was that when you consider the amount of dope flowing through the city on a daily basis, this doesn't even register on the radar screens of the traffickers. You want to know when it all makes an impact? When the price of weed DOUBLES on the street. Then you'll know you made a bust worth talking about.
This was a ton and a half of weed that does nothing but promote half a dozen connected guys in white shirts. How many blue shirts were even mentioned in the Sun Times article? One? We did more for the boys and girls in Blue than a paper with a circulation of some 800,000 daily readers.
So don't even think of telling us that we didn't appreciate the work done by the teams involved or that we have an overly high opinion of ourselves. We appreciate it more than you could ever know. But we also have a better handle on the actual reality of the situation than the media that prints a fawning article naming only bosses instead of the boys and girls doing the leg work.

Well, well, well I can't imagine my post interested you that much. First of all I do respect your blog it has opened and gave me vast knowledge. So I salute you there. But sometimes I wonder, especially on this one, if you can come up with a bigger bust than this then I will shut up and apologize to you but if not put your negative criticism to yourself because what I see here is "What you hear and not what you've done". If I were assigned to those sort of duties, I would not want my name posted in the newspaper. That might compromise an undercover officer's saftey. Just a thought.

What the press decides to print, we cannot control, also some of the P.O.'s may not have wanted their names in print, for obvious reasons, to the working police that is, so cut the crap!

I have no doubt Matt is a good guy and a good cop, but when I went down to OCD for my interview after I left the room the Lt. pulled me aside and said hey kid great background and resume but if you have a phone call get it in or you won't make it. Thats the problem I can do a great job also but will never get the chance. Any Exempts need their cars washed or waxed or their lawns mowed, will trade for a phone call.. answer add in sun times "just a call away".. are you listening federal observer or what ever you are. Regarding the sergeant test results comment by anonymous at 0935...I'll stake my internet reputation on the fact that you are full of crap. A traffic pursuit can be initiated, and monitored for a PSMV. It must be terminated after disregarding a stop sign or light. It's not a trick question-just one that allowed you to answer both the ballancing test and the immediate termination parts of the GO. As for contact cards-they are not "stop cards." They are contact cards, meaning there are situations where they can be completed without criminal activity- merely with contact with the public. The results were not delayed-only the releasing of the results which I've been offered several reasons for. One is Pete Devine-miraculously made it in the first D class so he could get that under his belt before he made sgt about a year later. I'm still not convinced another class won't be made off the old list. Without a new mayor, or at least a Superintendant from the outside, it's business as usual.
I hope Troutman likes fish and tossing salads, oh wait, she's going to Club Fed, she won't be gang raped like a normal prisoner. How much you want to bet that the dopes in her ward reelect her when her bid in the joint is over. Dontcha know she was framed? Well, I'm fittin' a go!

WHAT has corruption to do with Cmdr. Williams in 005? HE has no record of corruption. He was REQUESTED to take over that District by CLINE. You got a problem with that, take it up with the Supt. Like him or hate him, Williams is there. Talked to some young coppers from 005 the other day, and they said that they've met the man, and were left with a favorable impression of him. Tact teams have stepped up their activity. Lots of fresh help over there from the Big Bosses at 35th st. NOW to deal with persistent crime patterns lingering from last year, when the help was needed, and basically wasn't provided. Haven't seen much movement of P/Os on transfer orders leaving 005, so there really doesn't seem to be much of a problem there. True, Williams is young, and you can bet that his father pushed for this to happen, but the man is there, and things appear to be turning around, FOR THE BETTER. And no, I don't work there, and I don't personally know Williams. Give the guy a chance to do what he can before you begin the tearing down, Jeez, he's only been in the chair 3 months!! God knows Capt. CW didn't change much there last year, and she was the Cmdr. for most of last year, between Kelly's retirement and Matthews' problems in 019. AT least Williams appears to be making a positive difference!!

For all of you wanna be investigators via opinio on the blog, the investigation with Alderman Troutman started with a search warrant that was conducted by Narcotics 3 years ago. The FBI was involved because it was a joint effort done by both departments. They just happened to be looking for her boyfriend who is a supposed ex gang banger and alleged street pharmacist. They had no reason to look at her until they found her mail from the city at his house, that is how it started, then it rippled from their, so you can thank Narcotics once again for attacking corruption and crime.
Just keep in mind what I said, this was 3 years ago. They waited until 1 month before the election for a reason. Now, can we guess why?
It does not matter how unqualified any Commander is in Area Two, with Skahill as the Deputy Chief, she will make sure she lights a fire under their asses and does what they need to do. Dep. Chief Skahill, can you kick Commander Garrity's ass and direct him to address the crime fastly approachimg Beverly/Morgan Park before it is too late? I have lived in this neighborhood for over 20 years and policed my ass off in 6 districts. The police in 022 should be made to do their fucking job and not just protect areas that Aldermam Rugai is interested in.
