Is This for Real?
We got an e-mail today from someone who recently attended the week long TARA training sessions and they related that there is a proposal in the works to actually evacuate the families of CPD personnel out of the city in the event of a major terrorist attack.
Obviously, the thinking behind this is to avoid a mass desertion of posts as happened in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina where officers failed to report for duty so they could take care of their own families instead. And seriously, can anyone really blame NOPD officers for listening to that instinct? Why place yourself in harms way for a city that did nothing but crap on officers for the past couple of decades (NOPD was always near the bottom in salary and benefits in nationwide rankings and corruption was endemic).
Can anyone confirm or deny that this plan is actually being studied? Because we really have a hard time trusting the City to do anything even remotely beneficial to officers that costs them a dime. We can't see this ever getting past the planning stages. We'd bet money that the plan would be to evacuate to some location like McCormick Place, thereby providing another tempting target to terrorists and not actually providing any sort of safety to officer's families.

Are they be kidding or what? and, more to the point, how in the world (realistically) would the family members of the CPD be evacuated? Buses, trains, paid cabs? I hear it’s 30% of the families that will be evacuated based on “merit.” The rest will be evacuated based on an “objective” test graded by a secretive, arcane set of rules. Classes are now forming on how to be better prepared to be considered “evacuatable.” The good study groups are secret, however.
We should all have a plan for our families, and remember if communications it hit and we are unable to use cell phones have a secondary location to meet.

Ya, and if you stay and protect the city you will be taken well care of. Just like the 7 Coppers in New Orleans who are up on charges.

Don't trust the city, have your own plan, escape routes, alternate routes and destinations. Remember it is department policy that, "It is not practical to train individual officers to respond to a terrorist attack."
Remember the basics, FOOD, FUEL and AMMO.
Have enough food and water for at least a week.
Keep your vehicles at least 3/4 fueled and top off immediately in the event of an attack. Only store extra gas at home if you can safely do so and use a fuel stabilizer.
If on your way out of town, take your weapons and wear your armor. You may not be faced with a hoard of Jihadssts, but you may have to get by looters and carjackers.
Have a ready supply of cash, in small bills if credit/debit cards and checks don't work.
Choose your destination carefully outside the Chicago water system and have an alternate. The local government may not want to host thousands of urban refugees.
Remember that those who bravely served at Ground Zero in the aftermath of 9/11 are now suffering and dying from airborne hazards.
They are being denied the benefits they earned by the government agencies who are responsible for their welfare. Can we trust Daley to provide us what we have earned, or will that go to hired trucks and build a monument by campaign contributors.
Have a survival mindset at all times and stay safe.
I work for the CCSPD. We have mdt problems, some "Awareness Level" training we received through TARA, radios that blackout near the forest preserves, haz-mat suits sitting in a storage closet at the "Square" and vehicles with 150,000+ miles. I clean my weapons regularly, keep cash on hand and have plenty of canned non-perishibles in the pantry. I will not abandon my post, and hopefully at the end of my tour during a crisis, I'll still have a place to live. Be safe and be prepared!
I don't have any family in Chicago so if I am unlucky enough to be in the city when the terrorists strike my mission as an untrained first responder will be to assist the families of other police officers to safety. If I remember correctly from TARA training it is highly explosive and used in TNT. Also STOLEN was another truck containing a caustic substance that could be made into an aerosol. But hey, I'm sure everything will be just fine. If something were going to happen I'm sure we would have some indicators... well other then the stolen materials, the worlds hate for the USA, or our city getting one of the lowest scores for preparedness, thats just not enough to convince us just yet.

Sorry, was in interrupted...anyway: We are first responders. Part of the goverment's plan for medicine for stuff like anthrax is to dispurse the medicine to first responders and their immediate family first. That is the reason for the naming of all of the people who live in your house/family members so that 1. They know how much they will need 2. They can properly dispurse the medicine.
That, and they know where to look for you and who to contact when you are missing or a fugitive of justice...

Yes SCC it's true. There are plans underway to have meeting points throughout the city where families will be loaded up and transported to various safe spots. Unfortunately we know how the city works, and it would probably be twenty years before this plan comes to fruition, if ever.
Ramsey was forced out by the newly elected Mayor of DC. They didn't see eye to eye, and after the new Mayor was in, Ramsey was out, as was the new Mayor's perogative.
It's a shame; by all accounts, Ramsey was doing an excellent job.
The new Mayor of DC may well regret taking this action in the near future.

Ask the police in DC how they feel 'bout the "crime emergency" declarations, which were carried out on their backs by suspending contractual obligations of the city.
Ask the public whether they think he accomplished anything. In 5 years the crime rate went nowhere under him. It started dropping quite a bit when fairly large sections of the bad parts of Northwest and Capitol Hill started gentrifying.
If you were in Chinatown more than 3 years ago, you'd be AMAZED at how much has changed since. Its all money and gentrification and the public knows it.

At roll call on the 1st watch on the night of 9/11 I told everyone there to make sure they had a go bag in their personnal vehicle. They should have everything they might need if something similar hit Chicago. Gloves, masks, goggles, etc. Don't count on anyone else suppling this to you. I still have my bag ready to go because you never know when you might need it.
I love how these guys are talking about messages sent over the PDT's about stuff. If only us in 009 were so lucky. There's only enough PDT's to give out to about half the beat cars and the rest of us, you guessed it, can go f*ck ourselves. The whole night all you hear over the zone is plates and names being run, stuff that should be/ could be done over PDT's. After a while, you know the dispatcher and everyone gets annoyed with you running names, so you just stop, and stop working. It sucks! So those of you lucky enough to get PDT's, consider yourself blessed.
Commander of 009 is doing a great job and is well liked, but come on already, give your troops some of the basics to keep us happy and our lives a little easier.

Don't pity me. My inter-city condo stretches all the way from the gold coast to the lower east side of Manhattan. My inter-city condo is worth gazillions.
The ar-15 or m-16 is a fine rifle in .223. But I prefer a rifle in .308 or .30-06. Longer range and excellent stopping power. You can find alot of surplus .308 rounds and .30-06 ammo is a very popular hunting round. They can be bought in mass quanities.

Yes SCC it's true. There are plans underway to have meeting points throughout the city where families will be loaded up and transported to various safe spots. Unfortunately we know how the city works, and it would probably be twenty years before this plan comes to fruition, if ever.

TARA class ain't just for the regular P.O. anymore. Just ask anyone who attended that class back in jun/jul months. Some guy who claimed to be the police sat in the class for 3 days and took home every piece of literature handed out on Homeland Security. Turns out he was really a security guard employed at the Sears Tower. He was eventually escorted out by the Area Dets. only after not signing the sign-in sheets after the first day when he wrote down some bogus star # and employee info. The next day following his removal the news broke from Miami about those yahoos arrested for plotting to blow up the Sears Tower. Nobody in that class knew who he was, and those instructors who eventually found out never said a thing. How the F@$%k does this happen? and who in the Dept. signed him up for this Law Enforcement Only class? Watch your backs guys cause you can't trust anyone in this dept. I hope they got him to return his gas mask.
Roy is very well liked in 009. Some of you are just idiots, or have no time on the job to know what a bad boss is like to be able to appreciate a good one. Get some time on, work in some different places, then come back and talk. You'll then realize how good we all have it in 009.

Tara is a federaly mandated class for law enforcement only. One of the instructors told me that BSD was doing a study on how to adapt this class for the private sector ie. building owners, security guards, McCormack/Pier- civilians. The hard part was how to bill them, if you could bill or if this was responsibility of the City/Police Department to educate those who live or work downtown.
Let me tell you 02:02:44 the only reason we have it good in 009 is because the Sgts and Lts go the extra mile to make it a nice place to work. They take S$%^t from Roy on a daily basis but instead of letting the S$%^t roll down hill they just eat it. This doen not hold true for Lt R.K. he is a snake who thinks Roy is the greatest boss ever.
Regarding the Orwell quote: It was a tribute to the British soldier. And use to apply to CPD but no longer. Wimps and gelled, spiked hair wannabe cops.
