Its not that I don't agree with what you were saying at check off roll call, because I learned along time ago how to make life and this job easier by staying under the radar, But to berate and belittle your troops by yelling and screaming at them is not only very unprofessional but childlike. I am glad u showed your true colors to the younger p.o.'s. I personally lost all respect that I did have in you. I also would like you to know that if you every scream and yell at me personally and roll up your sleeves like you did and charge me like you did that one officer sitting in the front row you better be prepared to get a bloody nose and black eye. I considered that an act of aggression and assault. Some people don't need this job as much as you might think, so be prepared to back up your tuff talk. Now believe us, we know that this site is the 21st century version of the bathroom wall. We filter out bunches of garbage. But sometimes, there is more than a little grain of truth in some of the trash. Anyone have any comment or insight into the above letter? Half or more might be complete BS. Or it might be 100% on target. If so, we'd like to know.

The incident stems from 3rd watch personnel being told that they can not come in the station until 15 after and checking off was at 20 after. I guess some people just didn't get it into their thick heads that you can't be in the station until that time. That letter is 100% accurate. After working my ass off all day I don't need to be yelled at like a 5 year old. If he has a problem with someone coming in early just spar them and save the drama for someone who cares. I was trying not to laugh so he wouldn’t yell at me

Every period there are at least 40+ people who try to bid out of 008 and go elsewhere.
PAR forms requesting a tranfer have seperate copies that go to important places like headquarters and the FOP.
Doesn't anybody look at all these PAR forms and think to themself.. "Hmmm, there's something wrong here."
All I can say is, if the boss in 008 rolled up his sleeves and tried to light a fire under those lazy dogasses in 008, IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! Do nothing, poor response dog ass MF'ers!!! Hope the boss gets around to 2nd watch soon!!

How would you deal with PO's that didn't follow simple instructions if you were a District Commander and Assistant Deputy Superintendent Kirby is in your station with Deputy Superintendent Williams monitoring the zone?

Word is that the Commander was told if crime and response time is not improved in the 8th district that he is going back to Lt. and probably to a district on the far northside as punishment. It was overheard that Cline is very pissed about the crime on the west end where Cline lives and the lack of police services in that area. Maybe that is why he is acting different.
I am a Sgt. in 8th and on third watch. Don't know if this will make the P.O.'s feel better or not. But he pulled the supervisors in his office and went on a 15 minute yelling and screaming toot to us also. His face was so red I thought he was about to burst a brain vessel and drop dead right there. He is so overweight and loses his breath just walking to the front door. I wish he would just relax and take time to care for himself and not be so glued to his department pod and getting so upset over every little thing they send him. A gold badge is not worth your health, your friends or your life. When your in a coffin, doesn't really matter what badge you held last.

I can assure you, Jimmy C. IS NOT a good boss, as a DC.
He used to be a HELL of a boss, back in the day, when he was a LT - but like many - he sold his soul to the devil, and he became a CITY SUCK ASS...
All Jimmy C cares about now is his cigars, Donny Barrett, and getting his lard ass home to Mt. Greenwood. He does not care about you, the copper LIVING in 8, and the copper WORKING in 8....

unfortunately, I'm willing to bet that a whole bunch of "the troops" on 3rd watch in 008 needed to hear it. A lot of people have a problem with Deputy Supt. Williams' directive about not entering the stations for checkoff before 15 after the hour. We all know that lots of coppers have been pushing checkoff up earlier and earlier for years. When I came on the job, it was understood by ALL on the watch not to come in before 15 after. Now, people are inside the station at 5 minutes before the new hour! And it's not just the PO's. Sgts. also seem to spend more time in the station basically web surfing or whatever else they can do rather than be on the street watching the troops. I've even seen a couple of Lts. who more or less find a way to do their tour of duty sitting in the office web surfing in the W/C's office while the Capt. on duty says NOTHING. But if the Job suddenly wants all this accountability from the blues, the whiteshirts have to set the tone all together. The "do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do" attitude doesn't go too far today. But I have to agree with the first poster on this topic. If they bosses SPAR'd the first few violators, the word would then be taken seriously by the rest. Rather than deal personally with the real violators, apparently the boss gave out a tongue lashing to all, and that's not right either. The main violators are, I'm sure, known by the bosses, so clamp down on THEM.
Any man that would make merit LT. Scott his tact lt. never had my respect. yelling and screaming like little kids is all Scott and carroll know. Malloy should be ashamed he made these goofs. But a second trip to the buffet will make him and cline forget all the problems in the city.

Yet Fort Kool-Aid has the gall to hang pictures of these exempt jagoffs on the walls of the station houses after they leave.
Those hallowed walls should be exclusively reserved for the memorial photos of those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
They should use those exempt photos as range targets to exponentially improve CPD marksmanship.
Speaking of "standup" bosses, anyone seen this Lake Cty, IND sheriff "Dominguez" on the news? Looks like he's hangin his 6 guys. I hope for his sake that they were dead wrong!!!!
When a Boss - any Boss - stoops to berating and belittling their troops, there is a deeper issue going on. Apparently the C/O of 008 cannot control his PO's, Sgts., or Lts. If the PO's are that our of control that they do not understand an order of not returning to the station until 20 after for check of roll call, then the C/O should have had the Sgts. institute disciplinary action. Pretty simple solution to me. SPAR em, then the infractions will stop.

I live on the westend of 008 and get zero police presence but yet the eastend mutts get all the service because of this bullshit DOC. Now the department is taking away our (9161) last little perk in leaving for home at 5 after. This is the problem with the department, nobody will stick together. They want to screw with us than I say dont do a dam thing! Its not like you are over here on 811/812 bt's your dealing with mutts so why even give them service??? Answer your jobs, do paper when needed, and ride out the jobs for as long as possible. I will get some moronic heros telling me that "Im a dog", "quit and do something else" to them I say YOU ARE IDOITS! This city doesnt give a f*@k if you are the "WORKING POLICE" its all about event numbers and community concerns. What is it going to take for PO's to wake up and see that this city is trying to get as much as they can out of us, and take away all the little things we had. Sounds like the manpower shortage is finally making the bosses snap. The only reason they're enforcing the quarter after rule is to suck an extra 10 mins of work out of you.

Here is a guy, can't call him boss, who can't even drive himself anywhere. He has a p.o. drive him at the waste of tax payers money. One of the greatest mysteries of the world and still is, where was this p.o. when the commander was on medical for over two months, NOT at work.... count up how many minutes that is not accounted for, including every day he sits and does nothing in the commanders office.

Jimmy C. used to be a great guy as a lt. his favorite saying was "ur here for a short time but a good time." and treated everyone like that...Gold star really changed the man, one of the worse bosses on the job now. its a real shame. he has no respect for anyone including the capt. and lts. under him...unless they kiss his ass. a real tool

I got a flier from Congressman Lipinski. It had a picture of the Commander of 8 and the Supt on the cover of it, showing them at a local neighborhood meeting. It was sad to see these two standing together representing the Department. Must have used 6 cows to make enough leather to manufacture their duty belts. The only thing missing was Richard Simmons hugging them both and telling them that their Dancing to the Oldies Weight Lose Program does work!

I'm not too thrilled about the 008th district guys myself, but yelling about coming in at quarter after the hour is nonsense. The Big Brass have shoved poles so far up the butts of the Commanders and Watch Commander's that they're too scared to think without their shared department issued pea brains. I truly wish that members of this department from Superintendant down to the patrol women in the CAPS offices would stop being so scared of losing their cushy little spots. This department would loosen up just a little if you could stand up just a little for your fellow man. It's a true shame.

JC was a good boss that is until he went above the rank of sergeant. After that you can forget about it. I worked for him when he was a sergeant and what a prince. He made Lt and turned into an arrogant prick. Now as a commander he looks more like Harley and acts like Corless. Heard from a few 3rd watch folks in 8 today. Apparently the commanders face was so red they thought he was going to pass out. Seems that although he did have reason to be upset, he went overboard and pissed all his men off. They claim that they have lost a lot of respect for him because he yelled at the entire group...not just the guilty. Moral sounds pretty low, but 008 is still a good place to work. The commander is a great guy, and one you want to have on your side. Only problem is he is known to really hold a grudge and if you piss him off, watch out!

Can't speak for 008, but in 009 things are pretty good. Our bosses never talk down to us like that. They are the best bosses in CPD. We are lucky to be treated so well.
009 is training district with many recruits walking about. I'm sure if a boss ever talked like that to a police officer in 009, then he would be removed from power.

Okay, I have a question. How can so many people complain and indicate the 008th dist is a bunch of do nothings with poor response times.
Lets do some basic measurements. The size of the 008th dist is 3x's the size of any of the surrounding districts with the same exact amount of patrolmen.
Now if the 008th Dist is three times bigger in size, and the call volume is 100% more than any other district, why oh why oh why would we or how oh how oh how can we be expected the meet the same requirements with the same amount of manpower as another district.
Thats right, we're all do nothing slow to respond officers .. when the bid openings are posted I am hoping all the "REAL POLICE" will transfer over, and teach us how things are done.
Too all you FNG's that talk all that shit about the 8th district police service. Have you ever worked in 008? Obviously not!!! As it is the busiest district for calls for service and with not enough manpower, our hands are tied. But, if you think you can make a difference come on over and save the day...you FNG! I work the 2nd watch and the sheets for the new period came out W/ no PO's assigned to any (I repeat) ANY rapid response cars only BT. cars. But, yet ther are about 10 POs on the bike patrol that when the weather is bad they ride in cars but are not assigned any jobs. There are a shit load of PO's assigned to Neiborhood relations that dont answer calls then there is donny barrett? Anyway, If you think you can make a difference like I said come on over. If you would learn how to spell, they may even take you off crossing gyard duty and let you drive a squad car. Glad they are hiring college grads these days.
If you have a problem with a officer, address the problem with them, And not be overbearing in roll call. In my opinion acting like a nasty, mean,bully is a complete waste of air. As a WC the only thing you achieve would be to show others your lack of skills.
When I went by the 008th District today I noticed the Palm Tree Plant chained to he front door, the strawberry bowl empty and the Commander clicking two metal balls in his hand as he stood watch on his plant. He is also very worried about his crew pulling a mutiny on his deck!

I knew J.C. when I first came on this job and he was great guy then and I have heard all the bad stuff but being a boss is not easy. I don't like all the stuff I am hearing and I know a lot of it is true but don't stop doing your job, be directed by your morals and values and do your job because you have ethics and values. Don't do your job because you are getting paid remember why you came on this job. Forget about those bosses,I know it is hard but remember these guys don't go home with you, they don't pay your bills or feed your families. They won't be there either when you have a heart attack from the stress or do something else to blow off steam. All they care about are their numbers not your health or welfare. Do what you do best, get to work on time, handle your jobs, stay safe and go home to your families (at a quarter after). I know in 008, time due is hard to get, lunches and personals as well in addition to multiple jobs at a time. F.O.P should be up their asses about the shortage in manpower, the lunches being denied and the large amount of people detailed out. Start filing grievences when they deny you lunch, you shouldn't have to pack a lunch to work everyday or stay on a job a little longer to take a piss. The bosses and the dogs have created a hostile environment for every officer in that district. Get the citizens on those west side beats to file a petition with their elected alderman and demand the beat officers stay on their beats. If they cry manpower then bring back all the officers that are detailed out or open more spots in 008 so people can bid in. NO OFFICER SHOULD DREAD GOING TO WORK! They are causing psycological damage to these officers who are so overworked they are angry all time which will lead to depression and we all know what happens then. A disgruntled, angry and depressed officer is not a good thing. One thing is for sure the bosses don't care about you, care about yourself don't let them get to you, create moral amongst yourselves, be friends to each other and most of all be there for one another at work. I guarantee you if everyone getting yelled at would have stood up at attention and gave that man your back when the tongue lashing started, the message would have been clear. STAND STRONG, STAND UNITED, KEEP THE BLUE LINE STRONG.
Not having been there at that rollcall, I don't know what went on, but I will say this, anyone who has been in the military (self included) knows that sometimes you catch a "IF THE SHOE FITS, WEAR IT" ass-chewing.....Hell I coaght 2 today because one of our SGT's couldn't get some FRIGGIN' back-up, and he's one of the cool guys. If you have some ownership to the fuck up then take it, if you don't then drop it, the reaming wasn't meant for you. If you had to chose between taking a day or taking a chewing, which would you pick? If this guy has a legitimate beef with the troops then fine, if he doesn't then fuck it,......there are still 24 other districts and who knows how many units to go to.

OK I’ sorry I lost my Cool……hey guys its not my fault. I was never a great copper, just a fun, easy going big guy that loved a cold beer and a good joke. I was surrounded by my friends who were politically heavy 19th ward south side Irish. They took a shine to me and helped me get promoted. Everyone loved me as a Sgt and Lt cause I didn’t give a shit and just wanted to get out early and go up to the pub with the boys. Well then I get the big gold star and Holy Shit, I got responsibilities and I’m accountable…. I have known Commander Carroll for many decades(yes decades). He started his career in 005 (where you think it's so tough) and was in on the arrest of the Wilson brothers. For those of you who don't remember or know who the Wilsons are, they murdered 2 POs back in the early 80s. Those of you bitching that he is a merit whore don't know him and I highly doubt you are worthy of shining his shoes.
I live in 008 and work in 007. I rarely see a police car when I'm at home and at work I hear 008 district cars get radio assignments all night long with hardly a slow down. They need help. Of course, they won't get it because the bosses don't care. Actually, the bosses don't care about patrol in all the districts.
One more thing, to the officer who commented about the baseball caps that are worn backwards in 007. I agree with you about that.
The old timers don't get it. This was a fine example of the lack of management skills. You can not lead by fear. We all know what happened that day after roll call, the po's fucked the dept and did as little as possible don't get mad get even.

do what they did in 009 about 5 years ago. everyone come in at 2330/0030 line up at w/c's door holding slips that say "no lunch". the next day when they give you your assigned lunch make sure you are on something at that time, come in again with "no lunch" slips. day three, everyone come in with an arrest at 2330/0030 plus "no lunch". day four we were checking off at 2250/2350.

I'm a new reader to the blog. I'm a 009dist sgt. who lives in the west end of the 008th dist. I've read some nasty things about the police who work in the 008dist's 10 sector. I don't know the experiences other readers who also live in Garfield Ridge have had from the police service, but I will have to say that I've NEVER had a problem with police service in the west end. Whenever I've had to call the police, they were there. No matter what I'm doing in the neigborhood, I see a squad car driving bye. I've been very fortunate with the service & cooperation from the coppers in 008, from the brass to the blue shirt. Like I've previously stated, I can't speek for everyone, I can only share my experiences.

I was a P.O. in 009 when JC came there as a new Sgt around 1990 or so. He came on our watch and was by far the best Sgt we ever had. He took care of his troops, and had a great sense of humor but also was the most knowledgeable Sgt. in the district. Because of the watch we had, I actually loved coming to work. I have heard numerous comments about him since he became Cmmdr of 008...98% negative. And a lot of the comments are from people who were on the same watch in 009, who also thought this man was a prince. Having known him well early in his career, it is sad and surprising to hear he turned out this way. Back each other up & BE SAFE!

Candi on 3rd watch in 025 does not come to check off in plain clothes. Candi has been off the watch for a few months and won't be back for a few weeks. A lot of times Candi and her partner are the last in because they are still on late jobs. There's been at least 40 par forms every period of people trying to get out. The problem is that the districts that have openings are either too far to drive or they don't have enough seniority to get to the more desireable districts. Some of the coppers in 008 had transfers all set to go on management, but JC puts the kabosh on mangagement transfers and keeps everyone locked in 008. That's why everyone is so miserable there.

I feel sorry for his driver, Donny. I was once young on this job and would totally believe what bosses would tell you. Donny thinks his ticket to a nice job and rank is through a boss. I can agree with the comment that 9 has good supervisors. I have worked in other districts with my 20years in and most of the supervisors in 9 are good. The sgts are the first ones on a job and through the door. The sgts run it in 9. It gets to busy in 9 for supervisors to pick on b/s.

I remember when JM was Chief of Patrol and we were doing roit training in preparation for the WTO protesters during the TABD.
Well I was there w/ my Lt. and JM took the podium and started off on the Normandy Invasion and blah blah blah, then went into a scathing tirade against sgt's and Lt's who were not up for the challenges ahead and that if they can't deal with leadership then leave, quit etc... Anyways JM pretty much berrated his Sgt's and Lt's for about 5 min. Being in the military I surmised JM's tirade as a way to encourage the PO's but I think his delivery was rather ODD but I didn't give it second thought. Why? Because I know he was not referring to me. However my Lt. was quite pissed and insulted by JM's speech. He actually talked about getting a CR# or filing a grievance regarding the speech. I was almost laughing when I told my Lt. that I think JM's intent was to motivate the PO"s but he went about it in a way that I would not have done BUT I thought it was no big deal, it happens all the time in the Military. When 1 fucks up WE ALL HEAR ABOUT IT. By haveing a TEAM concept that what happens, we all get honored together or go down together. (not on each other, you sick perverts) However my Lt. was PISSED OFF for a week. Byt the way he was a college boy, no military and it showed.
I do not know this DC from 008 nor was I there when he said his thing.
But I do know this that there is a right way to handle people comming in tooo early and a wrong way.
There is nothing wrong with getting your point across or letting people know your pissed,
but when you go too overboard and make it personal you end up pissing off the one who are doing a good job thus effecting their moral( the dogs don't give a fuck and never will so why alienate your good guys).
But, as we have seen before, the DEPT. LEADERSHIP (I know it's any oxymoron) has been politicized so much that I will never see an improvement untill long after Im retired. The only way to STOP this Political Favor Organization formerly known as the CPD is to get a SupT. from the outside.

I was surrounded by my friends who were politically heavy 19th ward south side Irish. They took a shine to me and helped me get promoted. Everyone loved me as a Sgt and Lt cause I didn’t give a shit and just wanted to get out early and go up to the pub with the boys. Well then I get the big gold star and Holy Shit, I got responsibilities and I’m accountable…. I’ve never been a great motivator or identified with working officers, least dog coppers ( every district has both)…now I don’t know what to do, they put me in the middle of the busiest ( calls for service) districts in the city and expect me to do something…. It seems like his entire team pretty much cant stand him. They were told by LT Richie that if someone has a problem with Carmy not to talk to him about it or they would be dumped. Wow. Nice leadership. So if the troops are not happy, what do they do??!! Numerous attempts were made to talk to Carmy, the Lt. doesn't want to hear how bad "his guy" sucks... guess back to the watch. Most of the problems in the 8th district like manpower shortages, district size, etc. are problems than not even the most connected commanders couldn't solve. Those types of problems can only be fixed by the Little man in the ivory tower. But there are a ton of things that can be fixed. Not once have I ever seen the various commanders of the 8th district come down to roll call and say "What can I do for u" "what can I change or help change that will make your job easier" And there are so many things that if a Commander made one phone could change for the better. Like why we have to jump through hoops and treated like shit at the JISC. Talking to felony review about always jagging us around, Not being harassed about cu time and furlough extensions, Finding out why the new computers never work, etc, etc etc

Bags was never the real police, he had a few good partners who deserve a merit bump more then he ever did. He was well liked on tact with a big smile on his face everyday. Word is he lived outside the city for a period of time while on tact. He's alledgedly rewired a certain exempts house for free because he's also an electrician. (ALA MERIT) Unlike JC he has turned most of his previous co-workers into enemies from talking with them.

wow, as a copper in 008 I can see that with 186 people posting on this topic, we are truly fucked! There are a lot of guys in 008 that work, but not a lot of time to do much when we are always in a backlog. The problem is some of these so called workers actually are the biggest dogs. The ones that sit on a disturbance for an hour so they can leave there beat and try to get a head are fucking assholes. That makes you the working police? I dont work the desk and but had the displeasure of doing so w/o my consent.
It's way tougher then being on the street in a few respects
1 You cant blow off a paper job and there are more of them to do with non stop phone calls and walk in traffic and GOCR reports
2 You are confined to a much smaller area then a beat sector or district and have more then 1 supervisor over your shoulder at any time.
I'm sure your are an exemplary physically fit officer yourself. If you want to work the desk just ask to try it for a week. I bet by day three you'll be begging to go back on the street. So give them a break and respect them for the work they do and I'm sure they return you the same.
Last you workering coppers need to get it together. Call out your dogs that dont answer up and lay down on a job over the air and at roll call. Let them know you want them out of the district. You cant motivate a dog to talk or a fish to walk. But you can teach him to roll over and beglest you throw him in the kennel or chop him up and use him for chum. If you have mostly hard charging officers like in 009 (I dont work their either just TARA days). you'll find the DC would not be upset w/ the little petty BS.

If a boss gets on your case, ask him/her what their problem is with you.. Wether they man up or not, that will show their true character.. they are people too, but those white shirts get to their head and they become something beyond what they are ( at least in their own minds) The worst thing that can happen is they tell you what the problem is or they will give you a hard time..
