From the Comments

First, the question:
  • Too Old to Rock & Roll said...
  • Pardon the slightly off topic post.

Has anyone heard anything about the "beating of the bushes" program at 35th Street to roust up 50 bodies for some new unit?

What we've heard:
  • They've been sending bodies to a couple of districts to learn how to do reverse stings. Someone had the bright idea that all the house mouses could be utilized outside of "Closed Market" and are supposed to serve their street time as a mobile sting squad. Unfortunately, many of the people sent don't want to have to spend their street days in some of the crappiest locations in the city in all sorts of weather, so the number of volunteers is lower than expected.
Of course, this info was from some young gun who was half gassed at the tavern, so it could be completely wrong. There might be a number of "new units" being created somewhere to do another crazy numbers game. All we know is we're still short about 1,200 bodies on the street. And that's a generous assessment.

1,200 bodies short on the street. shit!!! how about the truth 3,000 + just to get where we should be. I'd like to see 5,000 + to insure public safety, a positive moral, reduction in all crimes, a + in homicide clearings, etc. it's a simple solution, but the city and the dept continues to fail to address and correct the problem.

whatever happened to the idea of...you were hired to be the police, then be the police; get a radio, get in the car, go out on the street, start locking people up. "I need my weekends off, I go to school, I can't work afternoons (I have kids), I can't work midnights (it's too hard to sleep)"....TFS, then quit.

What would the numbers look like if TRU, Area Sat & Gun Teams (cant think of any others at the moment) were to be disbanded?

Probably not that much different. Easier to get time due?

The use of bodies from HQ to do reverse stings has been floated around for a while. Lot of weeping and nashing of teeth.

Just what we need, another unit, that will solve the manpower shortage. Like they are actually going to do anything out on the streets. If they wanted to be the police, they wouldnt be at 35th street in the first place so how much work do you think were going to get out of them.

A/3 anet, gun team, gang intel, sat teams, burglary, robbery "06" plain clothes cars should all be working in uniform on a watch... they would do more service to us all if they did !!!

then you can cut at least by half neighborhood relations / senior citzen / front office / multiple tact secretaries/

how many P.O.'s and supervisors would be back on the streets allowing us comp time and maybe be a little safer for us actually having 2 person cars and backup.

but then where will the golden children work?

Just overheard at the Ivory Tower, this is true, Company D of TRU is being formed. People will be returned to the districts from 35th, not sure on the number, then the dept. will take apps from 80 aggressive, working p.o.s, to go to TRU plus 8 sgts. and eventually another LT.
Closed Market is ending, TRU will get those cars, radios, pdts, to man the new Company. This is suppose to happen by April, it coincides with the recent teletype put out by the C/O of TRU requesting apps.......

TIME DUE... FOGET ABOUT IT.

My sister is getting married out of town. I just tried to get time due for a weekend in March and was DENIED. This is bullshit. Because I work in a (Non-Training) district, lots of people on furlow during that time and NO MANPOWER, I cant get off. It shouldn't have to get to the point that I need to send a To-From to the higher ups downtown to get time off that I have saved up going to court on MY DAYS OFF which buy the way sucks. After working 6 days, I dont want to put this Monkey suit on and go downtown. The El takes twice as long because of the CTA construction so it's not worth the lousy three hours. No parking downtown, so forget about driving.
Some of the single young guns who love the court time might like to rack up some time, but forget about getting time off when you need it. This department sucks. Forget about the special units and throw some people in the districts so we can be up to par. Training districts have so many people available. Start spreading the wealth.

It's going to be another summer deployment just like last summer in 007, 010, and 011.

Just wait and see. The typical do nothing; dogs will mysteriously go on light duty, recurring IOD, whatever to get out of this detail once the powers that be start looking for volunteers. Who cares? Blah, Blah, Blah my privates hurt.

If it is a unit, then it will be as easy to get in as any specialized unit in this department. That's what the ambassadors from the ambassadors program told me at the recruiting event? Wait a minute. You mean this department chooses someone that is under qualified over someone that has more experience because they know someone. Isn't that counterproductive, bad for morale, and bad management skills? I think I should tell someone about this immediately. Mmmmmm this Kool aid tastes good today. What was I talking about again? I gotta start studying for the next Sgt's test since I studied my ass off, but still am ranked in the upper 2,000's. I was told by the ambassadors that the test is legit and I must not have studied hard enough since I scored so poorly. I am ashamed of myself, but next time I'm gonna do it because next time I'm gonna eat my Wheaties.

So you have no time on the job, work in a slow district, let's assume 016, 019 or 020, and you want some time due but were denied and have a soured disposition.

You poor baby, in case you didn't know it when you took this job, it has perks, it also has downsides. One of the downsides is if you need time due for something specific on a specific date, you need to put your slip in as early as possible, even writing a to from to back it up to lock it in. I know this might take you a whole 3 minutes of your precious time, and with all the massive court time you must accumulate working in these fast districts your time must be tight.

Try acting like an adult once in a while.

Signed a tact guy, with a wife and kid, who still goes to court, even on his off days, because it's part of my job.

Yes a shakeup is coming to HQ. Just look at the transfer order and see what HQ jags were assigned to units inside HQ, from the units they were detailed from. Those are some protected individuals. Those kind of moves aren't made unless something is afoot. The rest will be fair game.
When will the press get to digging under the surface for the real personnel issue....LACK of MANPOWER. The supt will go on TV and say how he's come up with another innovative move to free up officers for the street. Just like he did when he took his post and created Closed Market.
To clear up a misnomer I read, reverse stings for HQ jags is mandatory not voluntary.

I am not a big fan of the department's policies. They are constantly looking for innovative ways to get P.O.'s to do more work with less people and resources. I like locking people up, giving asshole drivers tickets, writing jagoffs ANOV's for numerous municipal violations not for the better of the dept. but because most of the assholes in this city deserve it.

Even though I enjoy my job, particularly putting bad guys in jail, the way the department is going I think it would be better off if we all got on the same page and stopped giving these bosses and politicians what they want. Activity needs to stop all together. It would give us so much more bargaining power. Our union needs to take a stand and encourage its members to, for a month or two, only what is required of them. Without our efforts the city will be exposed for the cesspool it really is and maybe we will start getting some respect. It doesn't matter where you work or how many years you got on the job take a stand and do nothing but the bare minimum. Otherwise get used to being replaced with cameras, swiping in and out, being tracked by GPS and any other undesirable thing the city/department can think of to f**k with the rank and file of the department.

The strength of the lowly P.O. is there will always be more of us then there will be of them (bosses, exempts, alderman, mayor). Try to unite and fight for common benefits for all Patrolmen.

Just wishful thinking I guess...

I have an idea have TRU work 8 hrs instead of leaving early or going to school on company time(see this inspectors)? Maybe have them in doc where the are suppose to be. Why not have them answer calls when districts they are in are in constant backlogs? They should know how to do paper considering the just got off probation few months ago. Hey TRU shove those incident number folders with 10 names on them up your worthless asses!!!!!

wow obviously sour grapes from a former TRU member who got dumped...lol. get a clue, nobody cares....

2/26/2007 06:50:00 PM

Wow! Spoken like a true "company" man. So in your opinion it's a sign of being an adult if you get denied use of YOUR time due and you just sit there and take it. It is OUR time due and we should be able to take it whenever the fuck we want! I love guys like you, you brag about all the arrests and "going to court on my days off" . You sir are a Fucking fool! If people don't realize by now that all those "numbers" and a $1.00 will only get you a cup of coffee, keep wasting your time and stroking your bosses. You want to talk about being an "adult"? try spending your days off with your wife and kids instead of bragging about going to court(and spending more time with shitheads). Your kids will be real impressed when they grow up and learn that daddy wasn't around as much as he could have been because he was giving more of his time for these shitheads and a dept. that would hang him out to dry first chance they got. Your comment shouldn't surprise anyone since you are on a tact. team. Why on earth people would want to put up with all the B.S. to go to tact. I don't know, so you can wear plain clothes? no radio calls?...oooh,ahhh, sign me up so I can be a SGTS,LTS and DCS little bitch and go get useless pissing and drinker arrests to make them happy(and before you label me as someone who failed to get to tact. all I can say is you'll never find an application from me in our office). To each his own I guess, but I feel people take this job to seriously, I'm as proud as anyone to be wearing this uniform, but to belittle a guy because he objects to getting denied time? He is 100% right, you shouldn't have to write to-froms to get off for anything. My experience has shown that many bosses are 100% miserable assholes. Either they have no outside lives(so why would you need time off? you should be here every waking moment cleaning up the streets, even enjoying going to court on your days off!) or they wanted to become bosses so that they could project their shitty miserable personal lives on those around them.Sorry, but there is more to my life than what I do on this job, and my "numbers"
Bottom line, we give too much time to the: shitheads, people who hate us because we write tickets, miserable bosses, courts,HQ, etc. as it is, so don't knock a guy who's pissed off about denied time, and don't brag about how much time and activity you produce for the "company"(as one loved, respected, admired, miserable p.o.s. boss we know of calls it) because that "company" doesn't give a shit about your activity or court time except that it makes them look good. If this has fallen on your deaf ears then just make sure the WC signs your court slip as you crawl out from under his desk...slurp,slurp supertrooper! Now go back out there and fetch me some pissers...

You missed my point junior, I have no problem with your activity, I don't care if you do anything for the "company" or not. My point is that things come up that require having bodies on the street. March is an anniversary for the start of the Iraq conflict and that means protest marches. The "company" being intellegent for a change has restricted the use of time due for at least 1 week in March.
My point is that i assume your sister has been planning this wedding for a while, you knew about it, if you put in your slip months ago as a P day, and included a to from, you would have been guaranteed your time off, complete with a deputy chiefs signature so no watch commander could question you on it.
As to my family, took my wife out shopping yesterday on our day off, held hands the whole time, enjoyed lunch. Picked up the children from school helped em with their homework, took them to their extra curricular activities. I always make time for my family, but in return they also realize that court comes up and understand that.
Oh yeah, I did make a pissing arrest last month, but the perve was pissing at a grade school as they were letting the kidergarden class out. The last pisser I did was over a year prior to that. But I guess I shouldn't of locked the perve up because it isn't a high quality arrest and I just did it to impress the bosses.

Whatever pal, this guy is right tho, time due is at watch commanders discretion as manpower allows, if it is that important put it in long in advance, this isn't burger king it's public safety, you know what you signed up for. As far as him working his day off in court, unfortunetly most of us need to go to court to provide for our families so don't knock a guy for doing so. As far as the drinkers and pissers, tell me how fast you would want them locked up if they were pissing on your wall with a 40 in their hand... it's all a game, learn how to play it.

Wow! Your on Tact? You must be special. You get to work in plain cloths and drive an unmarked car? That means you are like a detective or something. A NARC?
You wear a baseball hat like all the rest of the guys.

Actually, now I sound like the rest of the unhappy cops that enjoy knocking other cops out there doing their job. I don’t want to take away from all the hard working people out there, uniform or Tact. Everybody is doing what they need to pay the bills. Some of us take the job more serious than others, some make more arrests, some more aggressive, some doing little as possible. We all have our reasons for doing this job. The bottom line is just like the previous post 0n 2/27/2007 - 03:17am said it best.
We have a family at home, at least I do. I would rather spend my time off with my wife and kids Nobody should be DENIED time due. NOBODY. It our time.

My father spent 27 years on this job. I remember as a kid I always had to tip toe around the house because he was always sleeping between the 3 jobs he did just to raise 4 kids and send us to good schools. I always had a roof over my head, clean cloths and food on the table. But I never saw my dad. He was looking forward to retirement, getting a fishing boat and going to Wisconsin to buy a little cabin in the woods. Working 3 jobs, court all the time and numerous hospital stays from the street thugs took there toll. He had a massive hart attack and died December 22, 1994.
NICE FUCKING CHRISTMAS. What did the city do for him? Did the department help us pay our bills after he was gone? No, he didn’t die on the job. He died from the job!

Im not looking for tears from you. I hope you manage to spend time with your family and hopefully keep the same wife you started with. You want to be an aggressive worker, lock up bad guys, get some court time, be a good cop, good for you. We need more like you. Those of us who took this job were aware of what came along with it. Doesn’t mean we have to like the way were treated. We shouldn’t have to miss birthdays, family reunions, sisters wedding days because of this job. Now Im working 2 jobs just to make ends meet and live in this high priced fucked up corrupt city and I cant stand it. I fear following my fathers foot steps, but in 4 years I hit 20 on this job and Im out of here. Hopefully I can sell my house, take my pension and buy that little cabin my father wanted. By the way, Im putting in some time due slips for my last month as vacation extension. Don’t even think of using the word DENIED.

ANyone catch this new SWAT truck on FoxNews tonight?

Another fine waste of millions of dollars!
**********************************

Hey 9:36
This new SWAT truck is a Lenco Bearcat. Look it up on your search engine. It was paid for with Homeland Sec. Funds for about 200K .
The City didn't spend a dime on it cause after all it is meant for rescuing fallen officers, and officer safety in general.

Think they'd really take the initiative on that if it cost 'em something ?!?!?!

My advice to 2/26/07, 10:28:00 AM
Can't get time off in March.
#1. Put in for Personal Days then
DOTD.

#2. When refused, save slips with
a time stamp.

#3. If it is that important to you
fill out a P.A.R. Form re-
questing the days off w/o pay.

#4. Save copies of everything and
if someone else is granted the
time off, file a grievance.

Hopefully somewhere down the line when the Comp. Time litigation is finished you will be re-imbursed for the days off without pay or at the worst give up time for the pay.

NO! Every District should NOT be a training district!! No PPOs to 001, 018, 019, 016. Heck, I would even cut out 023, 020, 012 and 013.
Not much happening there, and if there ain't much going on, the kids aren't going to learn much. If they got transferred after their 18 mo. probation to a hot district, they'd literally have to be TRAINED ALL OVER AGAIN. And that's not fair to the coppers in those fast districts who would have to show them how things are done in the real world, without the benefit of receiving the out of grade pay.

How about taking those "closed market" cars, PDT's, and radios's and giving them to the Area-wide midnight gang teams?

These units were created almost a "year and a half ago" and still don't have dedicated vehicles. We have to beg the Detectives for cars and are riding 3 and 4 deep most nights. We still don't have pdt's and half of our radios do not work. Most nights we use our cell phones to communicate because of the shitty radios!

*************

My radio doesn't work, my car doesn't work, my PDT doesn't work, my dick doesn't work. You people are so full of shit. Your radio doesn't work? That's like a lie my 5 year old would tell. If you really get a car now and again from the D unit then you'll see that we're using 20 year old radios and I don't anyone who has had a problem. I never understand why cops lie to other cops about work. Maybe it's because you're so used to telling your family other peoples war stories.

From 2/27/2007 3:17:00AM,

Good responses guys, you almost make me regret some of my post. If you're locking up legit pissers in front of schools, etc. God bless you, I'd do, want you to do the same thing in my 'hood. What I'm attacking is the "numbers" based nature of tac culture that I've seen. Far too often, those arrests aren't legit "pissing in front of a kindergarden" types, but "lets round up any guy in an alley" types. Even these arrests have their place, it's just that the bosses should be after quality not quantity, and that is what tac means to me, the district whipping boys, and contrary to what the 1-2 year wonders think, I wouldn't want tac.
As far as family and court balance if you do activities with your family and balance court, then again, God bless you.I think 2/27/2007-10:29:00 AM's example shows everyone that this job is not that important so as to affect your family negatively. My advice(as one who shares the dream of a little cabin in the northwoods) is not to wait. try as hard as you can to get that place as soon as you can, raise your kids there on weekends, have fun with your family, don't wait until retirement. I've heard somewhere that average life expectancy of a cop after retirement is 6-8 months! I don't want to give this job/city/mayor/etc. all my time so that I can retire and die before I get to enjoy it!
And I've said it before, if you are court hungry because of family financial issues I fully respect/agree with that. What I'm attacking is the guys who supertroop simply because they think they will be looked as "better" cops,or their activity will get them somewhere. When I've seen hardworkers, an arrest almost everyday, get passed over for teams that they really wanted,in favor of people who haven't made an arrest in months-but they are(black/white/lesbian/female/etc.)...it kind of discredits the whole tac culture.

All of you be safe.

You don't seem to be that bad of a guy after all yourself. My whole point is just because you earn time due doesn't mean you will always get to use it when you want.

Biggest thing this company will throw at you is public safety, and, unfortunately they are right. And I don't mean to little pookie g and his thug posse. I mean us as well as the innocent people out in the public. Lets face it there are a majority of us with some comp time on the books and if we all put in for next tuesday there might be 3 people per district working. While that would be amusing to see, it would be a free for all.
And as far as your views on tac, I wholly agree, we have pisser hunters in our group to, and I don't think they should be tact members living on pissers and drinkers either. Unfortunately, as previously posted it is a numbers game and if you play the game you will remain a member until you choose to leave. I myself would like to see tact teams disbanded and have smaller robbery/burglary/violent crimes teams made that would only focus on those crimes with no head count, but I'm a blue shirt.

I have to laugh, in reading all of these "fuck so & so, I'm the top cop, I arrested joe shithead, It's all bullshit!!!! I've been on this job for well over 10 years and have been in the TOP COP mode the first 5 years which is very common. The "I'm gunna save the world" mode. I've have learned to relax and just do what is asked of me, give the bosses what they want and leave me the fuck alone. I've belonged to the group of drinkers in the past, where you all go out and drink the night or day away after the shift, talking about what great arrests you made (the stories always get bigger & better with every time they are told)and what an asshole joe blow is, or what a slut jane doe is (cuz you weren't getting any)....This job is the front row seat to the greatest show on earth! and the biggest idiots are the ones standing or sitting next to you at roll call! I've learned to be a listener and watcher recently, more than an actor in the soap opera of this dept. This job will never give you anything back that you have not given of yourself (unless you have that golden phonecall)but what really gets me is the guys & gals that have as much time as myself or even more time who still think they are the TOP COPS! We all know the types, they walk into the station and look for anyone who will stand there and listen to their lines of complete utter BULLSHIT, "Yup, have to go to court again on that shithead, you heard how I caught him, right? I was working afternoons and he was about to blow up the world when I spotted him, I jumped into action and didn't even get my cape caught in the squad car door when I was placing him under arrest!
These same idiots will also constantly see what your arrestee did and procede to tell you that they arrested the same guy last week with even more dope, or he was going even faster, or he killed 7 seven people not 1 when he/she arrested them. I happen to be lucky enough to work with two COWBOYS that always end up stepping on their own dicks. They are actually funny to watch and listen too, but also annoying at the same time, they never shut-up,
they always have some huge capper brewing, always have a UFO chick sucking their dicks on the side (UFO chick is the female that is often heard of, but never seen)and the best is they keep track of the bonds & jail times that the shitheads they locked up get! They come in, look up the crook county web-site and find the shithead they locked up, then typically scream "What da fuck! Dis fuckin guy made bond! Dats bullshit, wait til I git him out on da street, I'm gunna lock him up good dis time, dis is bullshit!" and they scream it loud enough for everyone within a square one mile to hear.....Excuse me Superman, WHO GIVES A FUCK! not our job to set bond, or give the sentences, we're just pee-ons, garbage men, we pick up the trash and place it in the truck....THATS IT! I could go on & on about these two international crime stoppers, but with all of this being said, I think they know who I'm talking about. Can't wait to go back to work and hear them yelling "Some prick wrote about us in the blog, wait til I find out who did it! wait a minute, I know cuz I'm da best policeman out there, just ask me! Thats why I'm begging to be a detective to the Commander.
"Look what I did commander, look who I arrested" Hey Columbo, you have alittle jiz on your chin and a kinky hair on your lip!
No real point being made here, just wanted to bust the balls of the DYNAMIC DUO when they read this, it'll make them stew all week, more fun to watch them crack this one then to hear how they saved the world again!

Im the whiner who complained about my sisters wedding. Just a little insight as to the excuses I got from the W/C. I first submitted 2 slips. The wedding is in March.
I put the slips in the middle of Jan. I am told “It’s too early to tell how we doing, too many people on medical as of now and we don’t know how the furlough extensions are going to affect the sheets. Wait until the second week in Feb.” Then in Feb, still more than 30 days from the dates I need, 2 more hit the medical, 2 come back but light duty and three po’s leave the district, 1 po goes to the commanders office on management so Im politely told “doesn’t look good, were too short”.
Yes im in a slow district, yes were short manpower, no I didn’t complain the union. Since I only have less than 6 years on the job, I don’t need the drama that would come with a grievance. I already bounce around different start times, and get stuck with undesirable partners. I write the numbers they want, show up every day, don’t abuse the medical. Damm! I even still shine my shoes. All I want is 2 days for a wedding. Well as they say, never say or write anything that you wouldn’t want to come back to haunt you, but after posting my initial complaint, Im the talk of the town at work. Last night Im told the boss want to see me. Now im wondering, should I go in with those slips again or just a bottle of slip and glide gel? My ass hurts thinking about it.

Thick? not really, every day you put on the star and work the streets you are doing just that. Every time you respond to a call, or stop some gangbanger it has potential to be dangerous. If your in the ghetto the risk is increased. I am not saying every minute of the day is a life and death struggle, but when your out there in the mix there is always potential (something that too many people overlook when they take the job). Relax? Your right, I should. It just angers me to hear the house mice crying about doing police work once in a while.
Why am I there? I could take the johnny hardon approach and say "Cause its my job" (places hands on hip, looks to the sky, and lets the cape flap in the breeze). But honestly, because I am an idiot...lol
