Remember That Olympics Bid?

  • It has been reported that the cost of the 2012 London Olympics could soar to £9 billion, almost four times the original estimate.
  • The BBC says that the Treasury and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport are discussing the price, up from the £2.35 billion set out in London's bid document.

The Government reportedly believes construction alone could cost £3.3 billion, with an extra £2 billion allocated as a contingency fund.

Any of this sound familiar? "almost four times the original estimate"? And we thought "contingency fund" was a Chicago term. Given Chicago's history of crooked contract awarding and checkered political past, cost overruns and the like are pretty much a guarantee.

Just for comparison purposes, £9 billion translates into about $17 BILLION US dollars. You think the Machine and the Daley connected construction firms aren't drooling in anticipation of a $17 billion dollar payday?

Olympics benefit the few few people that are lucky to get the contracts, everyone knows this. Everyone (taxpayers) are left holding the expense. Remember the cost over runs at Soldier Field? Multiply that by 100. Thats why Mr. Pimp Ryan is in charge. Remember Dyche Stadium at Northwestern? Since he donated the money he changed the name after 70 plus years as Dyche Stadium.

Daley is an egomaniac.

He doesn't care if it costs $100 billion.

So long as everyone in the world can see "Richard M Daley, Mayor" on everything that is nailed down, he'll be happy.

That money CERTAINLY can't be spent on any numerous projects in Chicago!

The announcement of Bill Jaconetti's death had been greatly over stated. According to the Tribune's obit section it was the brother of Bill that passed away. Maybe you should take a remedial reading class.

What would you rather have Daley spend the money on, the Olympics Project or the Bust-Out Projects? Because those are your two choices, my friend.

Too bad Daley killed the movie industry in Chicago

Chicago was great city to do movies in until unions had to get thier money and price Chicago out of the market. Toronto became Chicago.

How did Daley kill the movie industry in Chicago? How is it his fault that the Unions priced this city out of the market?

Daley DID kill the film industry in Chicago

Richie put a 6 and one half per cent tax on all rental equipment used by movie makers and Joe-Home-Owner.

This caused film equipment, prop and costume rental houses to close up. In the 80s&90s when movies shot in Chicago, the lines of trucks on location sets had Illinis license plates and Chicagoians had the jobs. Now when the rare film shoot happens here the trucks all are from California and Arizona and the workers are mostly from out west also.

Toronto loves Daley, he sent them alot of jobs. Frankly, they can have him.
