Scandal Brewing?
- For more than a year, the CBS 2 Investigators have been exposing the accident chasers -- towing companies that rip off accident victims.
Pam Zekman reports on a chaser who has taken abusive tactics to new heights -- illegally impersonating cops to shake down accident victims for exorbitant fees.
The company is called Collision Towing, and it does a brisk business on the city's Northwest Side.
Here's the problem:
- It's a crime to impersonate a cop and Chicago Police Internal Affairs is investigating Athans and the police officers who help him.
We were wondering why the Ethics Video (starring Charles Williams!) has been making a reappearance at roll calls the past few days. It shows a couple of scenarios where coppers "recommend" a board up service, a tow service (ding ding!) and some lawyer friend. We guess this scandal is about to break and downtown wants to get ahead of it.

But if you really analize it there is alot of Police Impersonators at HQ, wearing white and Blue Shirts.
I wonder if Charlie "Clueless" Williams will make an appearance in City Hall and give his speech on ethics. How many big city and state contracts are given to friends and family of the politicians!! Are they watching ethics videos?

What idiot cop thinks this is worth it? Career, fines, and possible jail time. The extra cash must be worth it. Not only that the lawyer fees we eat it up.

Hey check this out I had one of the New Merit Sgt's (from the 10th Dist- AS)call me in. He said I want to do a roll call training on towing cars. I said did you look at the orders or do you want me to do your job. He said let me tell you what is happening the citizens are in accidents and they go back to get their car and the cars are gone and I don't know what to tell them. I said Sgt that is a vehicle theft report. Not roll cal training on towing vehicles. God Help the 10th District with all the Merit Supervisors. It has to be at least 80%.

018 had an officer stippped about a month ago for this type of activity. On a daily basis he told zone 4 that he would handle any traffic accidents in the district and there always seemed to be a tow truck around, even for the most minor of accidents. Hope all the trouble is worth some pocket change.
Is there a district in Area 1 where several police officers are getting paid off by tow truck drivers? Just asking.

Just do your tour enjoy the job, in this modern video age you have to be extremely stupid to do this! remember this whatever you try has been done before but done better! How dumb! if you don't want this job find another now whoever these coppers are will be looking at getting fired at best and going to jail at worst!

This is a recycled story. Actually, it's the same story that gets played out every few years. Stupid dumbshit coppers think they found a foolproof scam with ambulance chasers and tow trucks. It gets out of hand, and these asshat cops go down.
I say screw 'em! Everyone knows you can't do that shit, and if they want to risk everything for a few dollars, then let them learn the hard way. I hope they all go to jail.
The lesson will be learned again, for a short time, until the next scandel. Maybe it will save the careers of a few neanderthals who would possibly consider doing the same for themselves.
If you want extra money, work the airport or public housing (time and half) or get a part time job. If you want to be a thief, do us all a favor and quit.

The repo and tow guys love to dress like tact coppers. I have run into many over the years with badges hanging around their neck. If you read the badges they usually say stuff like "Acme Asset Recovery Officer". They do it to imtimidate the person they are recovering the auto from.
Many in the repo and tow field are persons with shady pasts and criminal records. But then again your not going to find a Notre Dame graduate working for a company that wants him to repo some thugs car at 8700 South Escanaba at 3 am in the morning.

This problem with tow trucks is the fault of the City as well as the lazy p.o.'s that allow these sum bags on their accident scenes.
The City should regulate tow trucks the same way they do the taxi cabs. Sell medallions for $60,000's and if they engage in the illigal towing or deception with the victims of accidents they automatically lose their medallion. Plus a extra way to generate $$$$. Then the city should pass a ordinance that makes it illegal to arrive on a accident scene without being called by one of the parties involved.The zone should not give out accident jobs over the air so these scum bags cannot listen to their location on their scanners. Finally these lazy ass p.o.'s should warn of arrest if they do not leave their accident scene, but they are too lazy bacause they dont want to sit on a non-driveable auto, so they allow the scumbag tow driver to relocate the vehicle and then these poor people get jacked. To all the tow drivers reading this blog be forewarned stay away from my accident scenes or you will find youreself in the back of my squad in cuffs.

The department 'detailed' him to 015 for 90 days? How can they do that? He has more seniority than other 017/3rd Watch personnel. It's obvious that the dept. is doing it as punishment. However what happened to due process? He is being punished before the complaint is sustained?

Renders Services towed my car out of a lot. I was wrong, I went to Iron street to pay and go. The next day a guy calls me and says he told the driver P.O.owner FOP med plain view no doubt as to situation, the driver responds "Fuck Him", and then proceededs to sideways my retirement gift to myself, a beatiful car he drags it half a block and loads it. Once again THIS WAS DONE BY OUR FRIENDS AT RENDERED SERVICES, PLEASE SHOW THEM EVERY CONSIDERATION, AND IF YOU ARE A PO AND YOU ARE HELPING THEM, DONT LET ME FIND OUT. Thank God for industrial strength Numbotol, I would be on a roof without it. Hang in there CPD were still the best there is, always were and always will be.
If a PO owns a tow company and has contract with certain rental agencies then towing cars that are stolen from those rental companies is not illegal in anyway. You aren't one of those goofs from 017 who walk around and tell stories about how busy it is up there and how hard you work are you? And if you were in 015 you probably would be fired, for doing nothing. Why don't you lay off of 015. Sh*t half of your tact team is from 015 along with one of your Lt.'s and a few Sgt.'s who are all good guys.

It already is a law. You cannot solicit buisiness on a roadway. Taxi cabs cannot stop at bus stops and ask if anybody wants a ride, pedestrians must solicit them. Tow trucks cannot stop and ask if somebody wants their service, they must be requested by the motorist.
When these dirtbag tow truck companies show up, they have to be shagged off by the P.O.'s. However, what really blows my mind is how long it takes a towtruck to come to any scene for the police in Chicago (accident, arrest, etc;). When I worked in the suburbs and I ordered a tow through dispatch, a tow would show up with-in 15 minutes. Chicago, the second biggest police department in the country and we can't get a tow truck on scene expeditiously. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this.
On Mids in 009 back in the day our former Sgt. Kingsley-used to tell us to "go after the Rendered Services jagoffs"...and we fucking did!!!
009 needs Sgt Kingsley to return to us.
I have never had a problem with any tow drivers doing as I have asked then to do. I do have to say one good thing in that I was in an accident, my tow company said they could not get there for at least and hour and a half. I did not want to wait that long and I was really pissed off that some jerk who was not paying attention wrecked my brand new car. I was actually grateful that someone stopped by and offered to tow my car faster and to a place I chose to fix my car. I did however check with my insurance company if the towing company was a reputable outfit. I even checked with the dealer to make sure these guys were legit before giving them my car and keys. This man was great to deal with and so was the place that fixed my car. I think every car owner should have a list of at least three tow companies and three places for repair and check them out prior to using them. If the accident is not your fault the other person who is at fault will be paying for wherever your vehicle is towed.
These guys are vultures because, as I was, people who need to get their cars towed at an accident site are desperate and upset.
On a scene I tell people check with your insurance company before giving these guys your car and keys and if you want them to tow your car you will have to approach them and not if front of me. I let them know that they are not supposed to be here soliciting people but some people do not care and are just happy someone is there to help them.
Those people who own that towing place on 37th and Iron are really bad at towing peoples cars.

Anyone can be detailed regardless of seniority. yes it is a way to stick in somebodys ass.
