Eternal Goodbyes

  • 'End of watch,' in the language of law enforcement, means a tour of duty ends. For some, that moment meant an eternal goodbye. End of Watch will be in bookstores by Thursday.
  • Edward M. Burke is a former Chicago policeman, a practicing attorney and, for the last 38 years, alderman of the 14th Ward. He is the dean of the Chicago City Council and its longest continuously serving member. He is chairman of its Finance Committee. Co-author of Inside the Wigwam, Chicago Presidential Conventions 1860-1996, he is a well-known Chicago public speaker. He is married to Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne M. Burke.

Thomas J. O'Gorman is a Chicago writer, historian-in-residence of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago, a contributor to Town&Country magazine and a political speechwriter in Chicago's City Hall, as well as the former managing editor of the World of Hibernia magazine. He is the author of Frank Lloyd Wright's Chicago (Thunder Bay Press, 2004). His latest books, Strange, But True: Chicago -- Tales of the Windy City (Globe Pequot Press) and Chicago in Photography (Gramercy Press) were both released in December 2005.

And on line they have a number of excerpts from the book detailing deaths in the line of duty from 1919, 1920, 1921, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974. Anyone heard anything about this book?

What the heck is Ed Burke writting a book about the police for? My understanding is that he was only on the job for a short time and never worked the street (maybe I'm wrong, that's what I heard) that he basically used the job to get his law degree and then left.

Although he has had his fights with Daley, he knows what side to be on and he is a Daley guy. On this site we constantly talk about how corrupt Daley, Stroger and the Machine are. This coruption couldn't happen without the aldermen empowering the Mayor. He is part of the machine. Just because he has never been convicted, doesn't mean he isn't corupt (allegedly).

Our contract is up in July. Will Burke be leading the charge to pay us and settle the contract so we don't have to wait two years? He is conspiuous by his silence when it comes to supporting the Rank and File. Does anybody know when the last time he was at St. Jude's was?

This book was mentioned in the FOP newsletter of either Dec 2006 or Jan 2007

I ordered two of them which I expect to receive soon. I phoned the guy last week and theres a delay. He offerred to refund my money, but I want the books.

The cost of a hard cover version was $43.

Here's a phone number 847 913 8322 which can be used to order it, I think

I don't think its a 24 hour number, so dont call on the 1st watch.

By the way Im a retired guy and I just read Charlie Williams' memo.

Im reminded of a Dirty Harry movie where Callahan is interviewing a new female partner and he asks her about her best felony arrest To which she answers shes not made one yet.

Then he asks about her best misdemeanor arrest and she hasnt had one of those either.

Since there was nothing to talk about, the interview was over quickly

Anyway it turns out Callahan is assigned to work with her and predictably, in the clutch she performs well. But that's Hollywood.

She also had been {in real life} the Playmate of the month which is how she got this role in the ifrst place. Hey Eastwood's no fool. I cant recall her name but she was a hot Latina chick.

I tell you this because if I had the chance, Id like to ask D/S Williams to tell me about his best felony arrest. Then Id love to hear about his best misdemeanor arrest.
And about all the bodies he hauled. And the guff he took from Sgts etc. And just how long he spent wearing a blue shirt and in a day off group, not working 2nd watch. And just what qualifies him to be a member of this Dept, and a high ranking member to boot.

Then Id like to ask those who hold the rank of Capt or above the same line of questions.

With a few exceptions, I bet I could interview the whole command staff in 2 days tops.

Im glad Im outa there. Youre all in my prayers.

Ed Burke his father put him on the job! then he became alderman he has no love for the police at all! except for the huge wasted security detail he has! funny how the new city clerk states "Police should be on the street as they are so short", and has no detail, but burke needs them! he is a lackey for daley because he knows where the skeletons are buried!

How about giving out some praise for the Sun-Times for publishing this information. You are always the first to degrade the paper but when they publish something of worth you fail to give them the credit they deserve. Your just like all the other hypocrites.

Eddie Burke was the finest police officer in the history of the department! His integrity was above reproach.

I still can't figure out why he never had me promoted to deFuty. I always washed down my glazed doughnuts with gallons of Kool-Aid.

How's everything in 025, troops? Miss me? I hope my picture hanging on the stationhouse wall inspires you to be all that you can be.

I'll never forgive those dicks in the old Area 3 that kept switching those different sized hats on me. I had to go to an oncologist and a brain surgeon because my head would grow on Tuesday and shrink on Wednesday. The doctors ruled out neurosurgery since I already had a full lobotomy procedure years earlier.

Putting MY lectern on the roof across the street was unconscionable.

My thanks to one of my former sycophants for posting this. Grammar and spelling were never my strong suits.

All the best to Cynthia White and Mary Rozell. With all humility, I must say that they have big shoes to fill since my retirement.

Don't be a stranger, Northside.

GOD BLESS EDDIE BURKE!

It should be standard reading to all who enter the academy so they know the stories of all the officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Like him or not, it is a fine idea and a great way to remember the fallen.

I think the idea of this book is great. It's a good way to memorialize those Chicago officers that were killed in the line of duty. It also allows its readers to see the reality and sacrifices of police work.

seems to me that there were a few deaths not accounted for. Sgt. Dall or Doll who was killed in 15 by Robbery suspect. worked for him in 11.
A guy I came out of traing with by the name of kelly. an officer living in the 11th on Grenshaw I believe, shot in the front of his house by Black Panthers who had office just around the corner. these also in the late 60's early 70's

Go Sun Times Go! All the other crap you constantly spew deosn't matter anymore because your paper wrote one little article that highlights a tiny little fraction of the sacrifices of police officers throughout our history! Yay!!

Is that good enough? Can they commence to sticking it up our asses again? Thanks.

The book sounds like a great idea. I hate the idea, however, of Burke pocketing the money. All the proceds from this book should go to the 100 club, the national memorial or our own memorial. I hate the idea of this theif profiting from our dead brothers and sisters. Doesn't he have enough?

Isn't Burke the same guy in charge of the finance commitee that denies any and all claims of any work related injuries that don't include spilling your blood after being stabbed or shot? And i agree, where is he come contract time? And what support would his wife give if any of us had a case in front of her?

He embodies Chicago politics. Unfortunately his participation soils what should be a tribute to Our fallen.

There has been much written about Phil Cline on this blog; good, bad & ugly. Those who realy know him know that he is actually one of the finest policemen ever to wear the star. Read his letter about a cop killer to the Illinois Parole Board:
Printed below is a letter written by the Superintendent that voices his protest against the parole of a convicted cop-killer. Although the immediacy of this tragedy is diminished by the passage of time, the pain is still felt by this officer's family and those who knew him personally. Please feel free to write to the Parole Board and let them know that time does NOT heal all wounds and that anyone who kills a police officer should never expect to walk freely again.
January 25, 2007
Chairman Jorge Montes
Prisoner Review Board
Illinois Department of Corrections
319 E. Madison
Springfield, Illinois, 62702

Dear Chairman Montes,

On behalf of the Chicago Police Department, please consider this letter as an additional form of Protest against the parole of Joseph Bigsby, Inmate # C02290.

On January 24,2007, my representative, John O. Schmidt, gave a statement to Prisoner Review Board member, Norman Sula, voicing the Chicago Police Department's objection to the parole of Joseph Bigsby. This statement was tape recorded by Mr. Sula at the Danville Correctional Facility during what was scheduled as a Parole Hearing for Joseph Bigsby.

On September 28, 1973, Joseph Bigsby fatally shot Police Officer Edward Barron who had responded to calls for help from citizens who had been robbed and threatened at gun point by Joseph Bigsby in two separate incidents. Police Officer Edward Barron and his partner, Police Officer Daniel Abate, located Joseph Bigsby in an alley and ordered him to drop his gun. Joseph Bigsby refused this opportunity to surrender and responded by shooting Police Officer Edward Barron in the head. As Daniel Abate bent over his fallen partner, trying to help Edward Barron, Joseph Bigsby continued to shoot at Daniel Abate attempting to kill him as well. Police Officers Keith Grabowski and Richard Gaffney responded from a different direction and were also fired upon by Joseph Bigsby, who only surrendered after he ran out of bullets to kill with.

On May 29, 1975, Judge Albert S. Porter sentenced Joseph Bigsby to 100 to 200 years for the Murder of Police Officer Edward Barron. Judge Porter articulated his reasons for this sentence, including that he saw no hope for rehabilitation.

I ask that the Prisoner Review Board consider the viciousness of Joseph Bigsby's actions, and abide by Judge Porter's sentence imposed on Joseph Bigsby.

Philip J. Cline
Superintendent of Police

Political Correctness and the Department's congenital diseases
notwithstanding, (e.g. The Superintendent serves at the pleasure of the Mayor) please see this as an insight into his true character.

Also: The stories of OUR HONORED SLAIN are long overdue to be told & I for one am glad to see them finally printed!

Edward M. Kane
Retired Sgt. A/5/HGS

Yes, you are right, Ed BURKE was never a 'COP' [as we know it]
My only defense of him [I'll believe it though WHEN I see it]
The proceeds of the book go to OUR memorial fund. IF so, he garnered a bit more respect but out of respect to those that really count, the real po-lice, IF/WHEN the Inspector General can show me ALL the proceeds benefit our fallen, I remain skeptical.
And yes, Cooley does portray both Eddie and [especially] Anne Burke as less than honest [read the book] and you'll understand my cynicism and lack of trust.
Until then, remember Our Thin Blue Line.

Eddie Baron was assigned to the 004th District South Chicago.

His brother was a Catholic priest and volunteer police chaplin.

My uncle helped place him in a squad car and Ed was rushed to South Shore Hospital. In those days no one waited for fire, first squad took the wounded to the nearest hospital.
Severe head wound, a priest arrived from Our Lady of Peace and provided his last rights. His brother arrived with his parents.

A good decent man taken from us doing what he loved.

All the other coppers are now retired, in late sixties early seventies, or deceased.

Its a disgrace that this bastard is given a opportunity of parole.

Don't forget Ed's brother Merit Detective Joe Burke. He worked in Intelligence at the FBI Task force. A spot for only the heaviest of the heavy (at the time). A spot with great OT, G-car, ducks, etc.. He retired and became a "Director" for the Illinois State Prisons. A very sweet high paying job. I'm sure he earned his qualifications while at the Task Force. A nice guy, but overpaid, and under qualified.
Keep the ball of corruption rolling.
Wait until you see who are in the first class of Sgt. and Lt. classes. The merit are going to be super heavy. The Supt has to make his guys/gals and get them to a good spot before he goes.

I have a few that I know will be there. Will post closer to the promotions.
