Southside Irish Parade

Bringing back an old favorite:

Any good stories from the parade? Did the "threat" of zero tolerance that was suggested in the comments section actually materialize or was it just the standard silliness as in years past?

Channel 2 has a slide show from the parade.

anybody know? what we heard, in our part of town, was that...if the Olympics had a category for drinking alcohol in public, together with urinating out in the open, the parade attendees would have been awarded the gold medal right on the spot; but, you know how some folks exaggerate....2,000 people drinking, 20 ticketed..(anyone know?)

Stories of the South-side Irish Parade?
There was lots of drunks? An orderly crowd for the most part. A few tune-ups? maybe?

But there wasnt:
A tent set up by the CPD for lost children.
A 6 hour parade.
aww hell just add all the things that the bud biliken is and you have it

It was worse woking there then it is at bud biliken. It's out of control, fights everywhere after the parade. No arrests for fighting were made(DC, Mob action) any other parade arrests would have been made.

The State Police set up a tracffic check on 111th in Oak lawn to catch people going home from the parade.

I didn't see them do that at the Bud Bilikin parade/riot.

I wonder why not?

I was just at breakfast with my wife, about twenty revelers were in there, younger college types. They left the waitress, a good gal who is pro police, a hundred dollar tip, and said goodbye to everyone on the way out. True ladies and gentleman. I feel sorry for people who feel it necessary to piss on the Irish, and to them I say "Trow me down the stairs my shoes, I go by Archer to get da papers".

Some asshat opened up the drivers side door of Bt 1572 (wagon) while it was parked and unattended and proceeded to piss all over the drivers seat, while the crowd egged him on. I did not observe it but a friend told me.

Didn't make it onto the parade route, but was certainly "near" the parade in a bar, if that counts.

Anyone else headed to march in Savannah, GA this weekend? A handful of us will be marching again and anyone wanting to meet up, you're more than welcome to drop me a line. If you have not been to Savannah on St. Patrick's Day - well, lets just say that you need to do it once before you die. The ladies love a Chicago man in his blues.

ive never missed a southside irish parade----but this was my first year going to and coming home from the parade sober (i had my kids with me). the only problems were the drunk underage kids and the young children with no parental supervision. but as a cop who's work the gay, bud billikin, puerto rican fests, etc etc this was nothing compared to the other ethnic parades. no 10-1's, no lost kids, no shots fired etc etc but as usual the police try to clamp down on the drinking at the white irish parade iknow for a fact that if cpd clamped down on any black or mexican festivity there were be fights with the police, protests, etc etc

Believe it or not, it is ok for people to celebrate the way they want for whatever they may believe in. Our department had more police at that parade than we had roaming the streets throughout the entire city. Why is that I wonder.

This parade has now been named "Bud Billiken South". There is no purpose to this parade. The Breast cancer walkers, little Irish Dancers & the Marching Band were the only nice part about it. Everyone else in the parade should have stayed home. Nothing special. Bunch of drunks staggering around, puking, spilling beer, wrestling in the mud, people fighting, going into other peoples parties to try to get free food/drink. It sucked for anyone that worked it. No breaks, no lunch.

I certainly will make sure I'm on furlough so I don't have to work this parade ... EVER!

As most of us know, the Bud Billiken parade is another parade that is way too big and gets out of control. It's a comparison of parades, not races. Get over it.

It is certainly ok for people to celebrate their "day" in a respectful manner ... BUT it is not ok for people to get drunk out in public, stagger down the street, fall down in the street, spill beer on people, throw bottles at passing cars, disrespect people, batter someone, damage property, trespass on other peoples land, kick over full garbage cans, litter, piss in the street, puke by the frickin swingset for some kid to step in, drive home drunk... Do I Need To List More??? That is not ok. It is not a free day to do whatever the F* you want to do. If someone wants to act that way, let them do it at their house to their own property.

If you think it is ok, then there's definitely something wrong with you.

No arrests because the majority of the people there are cops, cops kids, politicians and politicians kids. I think we as police have been directed to what, give them a pass.

How could we have that many people that are described on this website as making that much of a mess, acting a drunken fool, pissing in a squad car and terrorizing innocent people in their neighboirhood, and not one person being arrested!

As I gently explained to a beautiful young lady how I loved to see her leaving, she told me in her moment of joy that a Lt. in 022 working the 2nd watch two days before the parade said if Deputy Chief Skahill and Deputy Superintendent Charlie Williams had one person arrested, they would both be 690 on midnights. Damn, that is a lot of nerve, but hey, he got away with it and noone was arrested. Not even pissy boy!

My wife and daughter went. I thought otherwise and learned it would be as I thought. They were at 104th by the County Fair and some bank. Broken bottles on the street and umpteen beer cans strewn everywhere. Teens doing their darndest to buy beer from everyone. A friend is a Metra Officer. Metra had put an extra train or two on to go downtown after it was over. Numerous fights on the train. Who was in overall command? Don't blame the blue shirts, they just do what they are told. Where was Ginger and the planners?

Simply disgraceful. When I was a younger cop, I used to have to work St. Paddy's day on Division St. with my tact team. I don't care what other parades I've worked over the past 20 years, nothing compares to the alcoholic madness of the St. Paddy's day
celebrations here in Chi. Thank God I no longer have to venture out and deal with legions of alcoholics, along with their kids.

Big fight 107 Maplewood, complete lack of control by Garrity and the
A2 Chief Scahill. Just a disgrace, the neighborhood is to small the tolerance would not be accepted at Bud, De mayo or HUmbolt Park. Disgraceful, enforcement needed to return it to a family gathering.

I for one am sick and tired of the parade. I am American by birth and Irish by ancestry. I made the big mistake of taking the kids to see the (Scottish)bagpipes and the floats. What I got instead was large groups of twenty-somethings walking along 103rd St. hooting and hollering while passing a fat blunt around. My blood was boiling and I was ashamed these "white trash" hillbillies think they are properly celebrating St.Patrick's Day. The other part of the parade that we can do without are the teens who seem to think that this is the event that marks their right of passage to become drunk and obnoxious.
True enough we "Irish" don't have the problems that Bud Biliken has but we can hardly hold our heads high with the displays of drunkenness, public urination, both male and female, and disorderly conduct on the whole from the west side of Western.
Side note: The bagpipes are purely Scottish and are associated with St. Patrick's Day because the Irish that were in the British Army in New York (pre-revolution) were only allowed to celebrate in their British uniforms (Scottish Highlanders Regiment) and the pipes were part of that. And by the way corned beef and cabbage are not Irish cuisine.....Just a wee history lesson

The parade marshalls were a joke.
Just an excuse to look important. Oh and lets bring the work release guys into our neighborhood to clean up. Yeah, great idea. My wife said she looked out the front window and locked the doors when she saw em coming down our block.

If anyone with any power is reading this, STOP THE PARADE NOW. Give me one good reason to have it.

If you're so set or have the need to celebrate your Irish roots, then:
1. Every year there is a downtown St. Pat's parade, in an area that can handle the crowds.
2. There is a Gaelic Festival in Grant Park in Sept. every year in an area that can handle it.
3. There is Gaelic Park out in the south suburbs that is a nice venue to sip some brew and listen to Irish music in a true family setting.

But for God's sake end this parade and stop this nonsense.

As a resident of MTG and a fan of the parade I have to admit it is totally out of control. The planners need to take a hard look at what the parade has become and make a crucial decision.

My favorite part was walking in the alley behind Leona's and observing at least 200 underage drinkers fighting and pissing on anything that moved. Best part was one of our guys seated atop a dumpster with a big fat cigar in his mouth and a grin on his face.

My suggestion is to start making arrests and close the Western Ave bars for the day. How many ANOV's were issued at the make shift court on 103rd & Western?

Actually, you can't even compare Billiken and SSI parades. I've worked them both in the past, and I've seen far more problems at the St. Pat's parades than anything that has ever cropped up at Billiken's (Billiken's might wind up with more missing kids, but that's about it, and it is a far larger parade than the St. Pat's parades). The drunken nonsense and fighting is just unbelievable.
And the underage drinking/nonsense? Totally unacceptable. Glad to avoid all that BS.

Billiken is the WORST detail in the city bar none! They have every tac team in the city detailed there and all the gang teams on standby, as well as SOS and TRU every year. The parade never ends, the floats have people flashing gang signs, passing blunts around, the crowd IS drinking and doing drugs in public view. The party then moves into Washington Park where the festivities really start! it is the official location to drink and do dope out in the open, they storm the stages set up all day long resulting in 10-'1s all day. You will have a few poeple walk into Provident shot from the event and it is the official day to not watch your kids because the police provide that service for free, usually around 4 to 500 or so. yes the South Side Irish Parade has turned into a real drunken fiasco but it is NOTHING like Billiken, you can expect at least 12 to 14 hours that day for sure!

they arrested 18 people. You can look it up on data warehouse. No real enforcement. Not sure what they are afraid of. One year when the d/c had no political connections/aspirations there was a stricter environment and better enforcement. They just need to one year lock up a bunch of people no matter who they are and send a message.
