Residency?

Yes, we got all the e-mails and comments and phone calls. And you're probably all wondering why this post didn't go up as soon as we got the Sun Times delivered this morning. Well, first up, we sleep most days. Second, we don't get the Sun Times delivered - we prefer it on line. Third, we needed something to post at midnight like we usually do. Anyway...
  • The Chicago Teachers Union scored a major victory Wednesday in its two-decade fight to dump a requirement that Chicago teachers live in the city.

A bill to prohibit the rule passed the Illinois House nearly unanimously, 105 to 4. It now moves to the Senate.

  • Mayor Daley has been a big proponent. He has argued that teachers will invest more in the schools if they live in the city.
Um, yeah. Chicago Public Schools are a national example of what public education should be, right? Educators from around the globe are trekking to Chicago to see how we do it, hmm?

Now, 105 to 4 is an impressive showing. One would wonder how they managed that. And one would also wonder whether any other union was asking that question. And whether or not they can carry that majority over to the Senate.

The good news? We finally have precedent for overturning an overly onerous work rule.

It is illegal to force people who want a job to live in the city that provides it.

With the cost of houses in the suburbs is it really cheaper to live elsewhere? Guess Maywood, Bellwood, Summit/Argo have cheaper Housing costs.

Oh wait what am I thinking its never gonna happen for us

If residency is dropped, then the city will negotiate salary with more fervor. It is a well known fact that living outside the city is cheaper. The city will just use the residency as a bargaining chip for salary. What would you want? Just leave the residency issue alone and fight for a living wage that equals all the "professionals" who live and work in this city and seem to get by on their wages. Sorry guys, but if you are in a union, you got to fight like a union. SCC, this writer is respectful of your webblog, but...
Unions, THE POWERFUL ONES, have helped the working Joe in the past.
Until the Chicago Police organized as a group, they were treated like WAL-MART workers in this city! Funny thing is...you propose that what you rebel against! By the way, this writer believes in the first ten amendments of this United States! The Right to Bear Arms is one of them! It is not all Liberal versus Conservative. It is just that the media wants you to believe that's the game your watching!

This bill was introduced by a House member from Chicago, believe it or not. I don't imagine that the bandwagon is going to include us anytime soon, but who thought this would come up even now. Maybe now the bargaining units (dont call them unions) will take this subject more seriously.

It would be nice to make residency optional! If the overpaid teachers can get it why can't we? threre are more of them just sucking away tax money than justified, the animals they teach don't learn anyway! the chicago public schools are an exapmle of how not to run a school system they just throw money at it. how about daley coming out for the fired curie h.s. principal and now the head of that schools board is going to take another vote! is it because daley had his people lean on the president of that board as he works for the city? intimidation daley style?

They made it look too easy! How's the FOP going to make residency look like something THEY got for us by trading away other benefits? Residency should not be used as bargaining chip in contract talks. It's a legislative issue that, as evidenced by the Teacher's union, can be accomplished without trading away other benefits during negotiations with the city.

God I wish people could just let residency go. Our insurance coverage is going down the toilet. With the number of people I know that already own a home and have kids in school. Not everyone would move even if given the option. I wouldn't pull my kids out of a school they love, and away from their friends. In fact, I would be punished because the value of my home would plummet. The cost of a home in a nearby suburb would soar, would you really want a commute that was so long you couldn't even enjoy your home?

Demand a salary that enables you to afford a decent home and private school tuition for your kids.

Focus resources on better pay, better insurance etc stuff that benefits all of us. Stop asking for things you won't get anyway. We all knew the rules when we took the job I am sure a suburban department would give you a lateral move if you want out of the city that badly.

Furthermore all of the clueless P.O.'s and other citizens worry "Oh my the city will go to shit, the city wont get tax revenue, the city wont get a gauranteed city sticker" These are all invalid points. Just exactly how many cops do ANYTHING off duty? less than 1%, who exactly do you think will move into your 5-600k house? a shithead? No, another blue collar worker that pays his taxes. Do you really think that these houses will become vacant? come on guys. Im sick of hearing these baseless arguments. Wake up and stop repeating the same bullshit this city and these old timers want you too believe. And NO it wont cause a mass exodus. about half of us will still stay because of alot invested and we are in a good neighborhood already.

Here's an idea for the residency issue. If you're within five years of retirement, they should allow you to move out of the city as long as you sign off on a designated retirement date. That way, you could get settled in and make the transition a smoother, easier process when you pull the plug. Of course, this would make sense and we'll have none of THAT around here!

3/09/2007 10:26:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Look, you older guys won't understand this, but listen carefully. The reason residency is as hot as it is now is one simple reason:

Decent houses in decent neighborhoods ARE TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!

God bless everyone that bought a house in Oriole Pk for $180,000 back in 1996. I hope you know just how fortunate you are.

But, us youngsters cannot afford that same house in 2006 for $450,000!!!

Daley would rather see us leave than pay all of us (and all the "Me too clause" guys) enough to ACTUALLY live here.

If it wasn't so expensive we would probably not be talking about this.

we pay a lot and get verry little for our tax dollar. detroit was a one industry town and suffered with the decline of the US auto industry. the value of living outside of cook county is huge and probably worth a few raises...do the math. just how much income do you need to buy a 450,000.00 970sf n/w side ranch, 350,000.00 garfield ridge or 300.000.00 mt greenwood? WTF, we are locked out of the housing market here and i'm sick of it!

off Topic, but I heard a funny story today

A few days or so ago, something occured on the 1st watch in the 023 dist in an old folks home which prompted a fairly serious complaint involving the Dept of Aging and a few other city agencies

Anyway the nature of infraction was so egregious that it prompted the Supt to instruct the D/Cmdr of 023 to personally investigate.

However, he was the acting D/Ch of A-3 at the time, so he instructed the acting D/Cmdr ( the second w Capt) to investigate.

He couldnt be bothered so he instructed the 3rd w acting W/C to investigate. It turns out that person couldnt be bothered either and sent a P.O.

Another Vaudeville act

Where is it a known fact, it's cheaper living outside the city? Missouri? Arkansas?? My friends and family in the burbs are paying outrageous taxes and service fees to live everyday. Yes your car insurance might be a $1000 bucks cheaper but that doesn't make up for a $5000 increase in taxes.

You guys are absolute idiots that want that residency rule to stay. The only reason is that you're probablly close to retirement and are going to sell your over priced bungalow to some other city worker while you get the F out of this city when you retire. You know that no one in their right mind would pay 400k for your little 3 bedroom ranch in greenwood/eddison unless we are forced to live here. How about not being so selfish and thinking about the newer guys coming on. We can't afford shit. Sure i knew that was the requirement when i signed up, but that doesn't mean that it is right, or best for all of us. Things have changed a lot just in the short time i've been on and i believe we need to lift this residency asap. Why should we not be able to live where ever we want? If i want to drive an hour to work every day, that's my problem. Please, use some common sense. It's better for all of us in the long run.

What’s wrong with this picture? We have a city that has to force people to live in it. Neighborhoods where prices our artificially inflated because of this. Smaller and smaller neighborhoods that you can live in and feel half way safe. You pay your property taxes to support the public schools, the same schools you can’t send your kids to unless you’re lucky enough or connected enough to have your kids in a public magnet school. Remember the Police are not backed by the same special interest groups that cry for more and more money for the children. So don’t expect the same support that the teachers receive.

WASHINGTON -- A federal appeals court overturned the District of Columbia's long-standing handgun ban Friday, rejecting the city's argument that the Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to militias.

In a 2-1 decision, the judges held that the activities protected by the Second Amendment "are not limited to militia service, nor is an individual's enjoyment of the right contingent upon his or her continued intermittent enrollment in the militia."

54,000 Chicagoans caught in perfect storm

March 9, 2007
BY SALLY DUROS Real Estate and Homelife Editor

More than 54,000 homeowners in the Chicago area were 60 days behind on their mortgage payments and in serious danger of going into default as of Dec. 31, 2006. That's 14.5 percent of an estimated 374,000 subprime loans in the greater Chicago standard metropolitan area, said Bob Visini, vice president-marketing, for LoanPerformance, a California-based subsidiary of First American Real Estate Solutions.

In Chicago the numbers of these early warning defaults increased 56 percent between year-end 2005 and year-end 2006, a higher percentage increase than posted nationwide, Visini said.

A lower-court judge in 2004 had told six residents they did not have a constitutional right to own handguns. The plaintiffs include residents of high-crime neighborhoods who wanted the guns for protection.

The Bush administration has endorsed individual gun-ownership rights, but the Supreme Court has never settled the issue.

If the dispute makes it to the high court, it would be the first case in nearly 70 years to address the Second Amendment's scope.

Residency probably will be lifted at the state level. We will probably have to sue to overturn the city ordinance, which would probably happen and we should win due to recent decisions. Then we will end up using residency as a bargaining chip for health insurance (2013 is not that far away)and a living wage.

I desperately need your help.

For reasons that will become apparent, I must remain anonymous.

Suffice to say, I am a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee visiting Chicago on business.

When I returned to my hotel room last night, I found a finely-crafted Italian leather briefcase on my bed. Atop the case was a hand-printed note with my name on it. It simply read "da Chicago Way".

Curious, to say the least, I opened the case and found it stuffed with wrinkled, non-sequential one hundred dollar bills--over a million dollars total.

The intruder had also left an iced pitcher of Kool-Aid on the bureau with an elegant Waterford crystal glass.

What shall I do?

To answer your question, yes, teachers in the science and math fields do not have to abide by the residency requirements. The grandfather clause was for teachers who started before the residency rules. So if you teach either subject you can live where you please.

SCC I write this not in hopes of stirring up the shit, but in hopes of saving folks some grief. I hope after you read this, you can Post the info in the eloquent manner that you seem to do. Please warn Coppers to inform thier families and friends do behave this weekend at the SouthSide Irish Parade. #3 (C.W.) has stated that there will be zero tolerence on everything, he does not care who they are. We have been told to anov and lock up everybody. Seems this year he can get pay back for the "non sense" he has put up with in recent years. My only question, come Bud Biliken will the same tenacious zero tolerance be in place?

Who cares if the city turns into a shithole. I would only have to work here 8 hours a day and then I'd go off to a nice suburb where I wouldn't mind paying taxes for using public schools and park district facilities.
I can't do that here in the city because they bus the shit from LeClaire courts & Englewood to the neighborhood high school & then they all the thugs hang out in the park. The freeloading city living leeches can suck the taxes out of someone else!

i fail to see how any corporation (which is what the city is) can require an employee to live in any specific place. in my opinion it is unconstitutional at the least... we should have the right to live where ever the hell we want, and if that is outside the limits of this thankless city then more power to us!!!

Hey, Finally there is some good treatment going on here in the Department. I went to pick up my sister from O'Hare last night and called the CPD Airport office to ask for a parking courtesy. Well, the offficer on the other end of the phone gladly said " yes " and had a squad meet me to verify my Police I.D. and I was on my way. Parking as long as I needed. Wow! Taking care of eachother is pretty nice. Thank you to our members on CPD working at O'Hare.

Be careful of what you ask for.

If the residency rule goes, then we lose the right to vote in Chicago. Then Daley can treat us even more like shit.

3/09/2007 03:47:00 AM
---

Huh? If you LIVE here you vote here. If you live in Park Ridge you vote in Park Ridge. Daley will treat us like shit regardless.

You probably will still have to buy a Chicago city sticker though.

The FOP has been trying to get a similar law passed. Illinois labor law states that municipalities over one million in population do not have to subject residency to collective bargaining for police officers. Fire too I guess.

Which city in Illinois do you think that applies to? ONLY CHICAGO!

The FOP has backed legislation that repeals that illegal and horseshit law. If the teacher's law is knocked out I would bet ours is not far behind. If it happens look for contiguous towns only, that is only those bordering on Chicago will be available for PO's to live in. That would be a big boost. There will still be many who will not move.

I for one will get a new zip code and area code IMMEDIATELY!

Off Topic but I want to make sure I didnt miss a special order while I was on furlo last month.

I see it has become standard practice for a member of the Area 5 gun team to take an unmarked car home every night.

Now I understand this has been normal practice for bossses but last I knew the man doing this is a P O.

Now I know he is a major league kiss ass but why is he taking home a squad car, using city gas to cart his ass around.

Can someone please clear this for me and let me know if I missed something the past few weeks or is this something that the munchkin thinks is going unnoticed.

Thank you and see you in the next SGT class

Hey VINNIE, you sound jealous. Instead of posting on the blog why don't you DO something about it. In the Old days 4 flat tires and some vehicle damage while parked in front of his house would have taken care of the problem. Too bad you don't have the BALLS to take care if it yourself.

Latest news from the Tribune on the $100 million lawsuit from the girl who was raped/thrown from the Taylors that the city is going to lose.....

"According to the amended complaint, at least three police officers at the airport witnessed her screaming at bystanders, ranting nonsensically about cigarette smokers and the price of oil, and dancing in circles, but none of them attempted to follow police department guidelines by transporting her to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Once she was taken to the Chicago Lawn Police District station, one officer, Yvonne Delia, called Eilman's parents in Sacramento and talked to them about her mental state, according to the court documents. After learning that Eilman had been diagnosed as bipolar, Delia allegedly informed fellow police officers who did nothing to seek help for the woman, according to the complaint.

Chicago Lawn District Lt. Carson Earnest allegedly asked a sergeant to interview Eilman to assess her mental state after the arresting officers, Richard Cason and Rosendo Moreno, said she was "goofy," according to the complaint. And officers at the Wentworth District lockup documented that Eilman was acting "irrational" when they processed her into a holding cell overnight."

He's right. The decent suburbs are more expensive than the city now. The cheap suburbs are all section 8 housing and trailer trash. And on a philosophical level, why should decent people let the shitbirds drive them out of their own houses? Want to make a difference? Bid to the district where you live, and instead of hiding out at your house watching tv while at work, get out and enforce the law on these stank-bones.

real estate around the *country* has skyrocketed, not just Chicago you moron.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

How many of you morons have actually lived in the Suburbs??? I lived there for 25 years before I got on this job. My parents still live there. I compare my bills with theirs all the time.

Lets add up the totals. The burbs have monthly garbage and water bills. We don't pay for garbage and get charged for water twice a year. Edge Norwood Park

I pay between 3000 and 4000 for property taxes(I'm still appealing my last increase. Yes for what I have the taxes are way to high). My parents pay 8800(They do have a bigger lot of land and a bigger house). My neighbors are all honkeys. Ma and Pa have Julio and Juan in the 2 houses to the south of them. The neighbor who just moved into the north has the last name of Patel. I know all my neighbors and they know me. My parents don't have a clue as to any of their neighbors names and nobody is friendly to each other. Edge Norwood Park.

Schools, this is the big one for almost everybody. I went to the public school system where I grew up. It was very good. I was prepared for college when I graduated HS. I went straight to college out of HS and received my Bachelors after 4 years. This was over 15 years ago. Today those same public schools are overun with kids who don't speak English. Gangs are prevelant everywhere and have good kids joining the ranks. The kids have to kick and scratch to stay above being in the classes with all the morons. Sounds like Chicago. I'm sorry this is a suburb in Dupage Cty. The schools in Chicago are getting better everyday. There still is a ton of work to be done. We need to fight to make them better. Those of us on the NW side have it better than those on the SW side. Edge: Burbs. No matter how bad its gotten where I grew up it isn't as bad as the citys public schools.

Corruption: If you clowns think that the city is more corrupt than the burbs you are sadly mistaken. Try getting any work done on your house in the burbs without paying a bribe to that towns city hall. The burb you live in has inspectors that will inspect all work done. Its not like the city where they don't have the time. The burbs run a tight ship for their kickbacks. The city doesn't even pay attention unless somebody calls on you. Try getting your sidewalk fixed or something done to your parkway in the burbs. Your complaint will go on deaf ears unless you have connections or a hundo in your hand. I have gone to the 41st wards Alds office on numerous occasions. He never greets me but, questions and complaints are taken care of. I don't have to beg or open my wallet. The POLICE!!!!! Do I even have to mention the difference between us and them. We are allowed alot more freedoms than them and it shows in how we react to each other. Edge Norwood Park

I would have rather lived in the burbs 10 years ago. Now its a tossup. You get more land and a nicer house with the burbs. You pay more in taxes and fees with that. The schools aern't what they used to be and the commute is alot longer. We should use the residency requirement as a bargaining chip. United we stand and divided we fall. If half of us leave the city all will be lost for good. We should be fighting to have free health insurance for ourselves and spouses. Think how much money would be saved right there.

PS anybody who thinks were underpaid is a goof. With 10 years on the job I make well over 70gs including uniform and duty allowance. This is for a job that didn't require college when I started. Its also a job that pays overtime after your 8. Start naming me any jobs in the private sector that pay over 70gs without college and your paid for overtime. They don't exist by the way, don't rack your brains trying to think of some.

HMMMMMMMM, how to respond?

When I came on my health care was free, My retiree health care was supposed to be taken care of and my dental benefits were better. Also my prescriptions were cheaper and my co-pays were less. There was non of this caps B.S. and there was no 30 percent merit promotions. As for a dangerous working environment the city did fail to tell me about mold growing in the heating and cooling vents in certain districts, cars with over 100,000 miles on them , radios that die after 4 hrs into your tour and as for the watches at least when we rotated you had a chance to work days as a new guy once every 3 periods. You also worked a watch cause you like the people on it, not because you were a back stabber and needed days because of "Child Care" problems.

Sooooooooo, the city and Police Dept change things on us all the time and we are supposed to sit and take it smiling? If a newbie as you call them wants to change the residency why not. Almost every change since I came on has be designed to F#ck the P.O. Maybe its time a change benefited us.

P.S.

Go F#ck yourself.

As someone who violated the residency rules back in the 70"s I can say its not all its cracked up to be.

My first mistake was to move from Roseland to South Holland - after 6 years the inhabitants starting coming in and I barely escaped with my original investment.

My second mistake was to move further south and buy in Country Club Hills. Bigger mistake then the first - more inhabitants.

My first wise move was to come back in and buy in Mt. Greenwood. Have done real well on my $100,000 investment and will retire later this year with a nice piece of change.

Remember kids sometimes its better to circle the wagons then branch out to new pastures. The cows are always looking for new crazing lands.

I think the focus of this blog is being missed. We, the members of the Chicago Police Department, are discussing and sometimes arguing about what item the FOP should bring to the table at the next contract negotiation, which by the way is very near. Think about what we are proposing. The three main topics constantly being discussed are residency, 6 day work week, and of course money. First, let's look at the issue of residency. The home rule law is outdated and only one city in the entire of State of Illinois can use this law, Chicago. We shouldn't have to negotiate about the residency requirement because it is biased toward the employees of the City of Chicago. What I mean is that if the FOP can find a semi-legitimtate politician to support the elimination of the home rule law because it violates the Constitution of the United States. According to the Constitution we as citizens of the United States, not just the City of Chicago, have the right to live where we want. I do agree that the City has the right to establish parameters as far as how far away we live because of emergency situations, but the City doesn't have the right to establish a "feudal system" where we have to live on the land of our benfactor so that he/she could collect a constant flow of taxes from us. Residency shouldn't be an item to negotiate about, it's a right given to us per the Constitution of the United States.

Second topic is the elimination of the 6 day work week. Funny, but I thought the FOP was proud of the fact that they negotiated for the city to conduct an experiment or study to eliminate the 6 day week. In my opinion this was doomed to failure because the City wanted to keep a certain level of hours based upon the current 6 day schedule. I'm not too good in math, but I don't think this is possible. The hours that we work per year have to be reduced from the amount based upon the 6 day schedule to fit into a 4 or 5 day schedule. I saw several in writing several proposals, but none of them would provide a ballance for the day off groups and the hours the City mandates us to work. The bottom line is that the City won't negotiate in good faith for the elimination of the 6 day work because every one of us gives the City free hours per year that we simply don't get paid for.

The last topic is the money issue. A big boost in our salaries overnite is always nice when we resolve the contract negotiation. But the truth is that the rise in the cost of living in the U.S. has been going up by 3-1/2% to 4-1/2% per year. The cost of living in Chicago has been constantly on the high end, if not a little bit higher than 4-1/2%. Since we have to live in the City we have the pay an increasing amount for such things as real estate taxes, city stickers, sales tax, gasoline tax, electric bills, private schools, etc. Now, let's look at your recent raises. What was the average raise per year you received. Based upon my estimate we I received a little less the the cost the living average in Chicago.

Yes I am bashing the FOP. We have to wait years to negotiate for a contract that includes raises that are less than the cost of living in Chicago, a study to eliminate the 6 day work week and not even a mention of the elimination of the residency requirement because, according to a FOP representative I talked to, the FOP doesn't want to present this at negotiation because the City won't address the issue, just like promotion test procedures.

We shouldn't have to negotiate about the elimination of the 6 day work week and the elimination of the residency requirement. If the FOP asks us for more money so that we could go to court, maybe all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, I think most of us will donate the money and most especially I think we could win. Oh and by the way, for the people who are worried about property values plummeting if their is a mass exodus, I think you have nothing to worry about. There are too few of us to make an impact on the real estate values and the true reason why the value of our property is so high is because of other factors not including Chicago Police Officers and Chicago Firefighters. For example, in my neighborhood the last 3 houses sold were bought by Polish people for an average purchase price of $435,000. None of them works for the City.

Have a nice day.

Go to the FOP Lodge 7 website and click on "Surveys" on the left column. You can then tell them what you want in this upcoming contract.

Let them know this is the time to fight residence. If the teachers can get it, so can we!!

Hey sharpies! There is no residency "rule" that can be negociated away in the next contract, it is a state law, and no matter what Daley agrees to (though he never will) the law still has to be changed in the state legislature, it can not be negociated in a contract agreement. The teachers are required to live in the city by agreement with the city not by requirement of state law. Just do what the commander of a certain northeast side district does and have his family live in the suburbs and go there all the time and keep an apartment in the city to satisfy the requirement. If it is good enough for him you have the precedent you need to fight IAD.

Questions for the newbies.
1. When you took this job did the city fail to inform you about the residency rule?
2. When you took this job did the city fail to inform you that you might work in a dangerous environment?
3. When you took this job did the city fail to inform you that you might have to work lousy hours until your senority allowed a move to better hours?

In case any of you don't know the answers to these questions they are all a resounding "no".

Come on you guys bitch more than a bunch of old jewish women going through menopause. You took the job, deal with it.

Forget about living in Lake or DuPage, their taxes are insane.

You may save money on tuition and insurance, but housing in a DECENT area in the 'burbs is just as, if not more, costly as it is here with taxes more improportional than ours.

You knew you had to live in the city when you signed up, DEAL WITH IT !!!!

And, many of the suburbs have some type of residency requirement, ask a Schiller Park, Franklin Park, Skokie, Niles, Glenview, even Lake Forest officer. The list is too full to mention more.

WE DON'T HAVE IT THAT BAD HERE, YOU GET PAID QUITE WELL FOR WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, TURN IN A PAR FORM AND GTFO.

New york and Los Angeles have no residency! Why should we be different.....because a corrupt regime rules are lives.

Why did I serve my country honorably if I can't even choose where I want to live?

Residency did not destroy Detroit. There were other socio-economic factors involved. The trib had a great article about how residency would affect Chicago. Guess what it would'nt. There's approximately 40,000 to 50,000 city workers. If we all left it would not affect tax collections to much....there is still millions of people living here. They estimated maybe 5% would leave. No big deal....especially since we have all of these illegals here.

Property taxes maybe higher in the suburbs but the schools are virtually free. I would rather have my kid go to a public school in Schaumburg then a parish school.

Daley has residency so the "machine" can keep rolling. The patronage jobs that require campaign work and votes.

Very sad living in Chicago these days. We have other family members who choose to live in the suburbs and have affordable newer homes that range around 200K. You can't find anything decent in the city for that price. We have two young children and will eventually need a third job to pay for private school next year. There are so many of us who share this same problem. It would be nice if they threw us a bone with maybe a property tax break or how about reimbursement for private school.

Your value didnt go up because its such a wonderfull house, it went up because there are less and less decent places to live. Sadly for you if the residency goes, so does your value.
Affluent suburbs do not have residency because they understand that with what they pay their officers it would be extremely hard for them to have to pay to live there. The city is at that point with property values.
Oh sure, daley would gladly say there is affordable housing because he doesnt really care if you live on the same block as sec. 8. He doesnt have to deal with the flocks of teens roaming his neighborhood with very little respect for others or their property. Makes no difference to him if they decide to start a narcotics enterprise around your neighborhood. Big deal if your kids have to deal with gangs on the streets and in the schools. He would rather that we live in the hood because he thinks that if we are there, the crime will go away. Hell, to him, the media, and all the liberals, its our fault that the they are like that in the first place. Ask most coppers that have tried it and they will tell you trying to clean up their block is like pissing into the wind. The last thing I want to do after working six days or more(depending on court) is have to be the police at home on my days off. But none of this effects him so he could care less. Oh, and watch how fast he flees the city when he is no longer mayor. The only way he will stay is if his son takes over.
And for those who keep saying residency was here when you took the job so just deal with it, I say you are a fool. If things were left to complacent idiots like yourselves, things would never change for the better. You probably already have your house on the higher ground that isnt being effected by the flood of shit and are shaking in your boots because if residency goes, how are you going to jam some poor slob with your overinflated price when you retire.

Not everyone will cut and run if residency is lifted. And to the comment that they could be a house for 200K wouldn't be buying much of a house. However, it would be nice to have the choice, especially if kids are involved. One thing is for sure, suburbs offer cheaper car insurance, cheaper vehicle stickers, water bills. On the flip side, higher propery taxes for sure. I sold my house in the city immediately after I retired and have not gone north of 95th Street for quite a while now.

While I agree with almost everything else you say, it's pretty obvious that you're "not too good in math". (Hey, I did say that I agree with almost everything you say!). Another guy that can't look at a calendar and figure this out. EVERY single CPD employee assigned to a day off group works 40 hours a week (not allowing for any OT). Every single employee. I repeat: Look at a calendar. Pick any week you want, Sunday through Saturday. Count how many days (Sunday to Saturday) you worked during that week. YOU ONLY WORK FIVE DAYS A WEEK!!! Hey "Sharpie," you are incorrect, there is NO state law requiring residency for us, none, nada, zero zilch.

It can be negotiated and if Daley agreed to it it would be a done deal.

What is in the law slick, is that We cannot take the Residency issue to an arbitrator and that it is not a mandatory issue in collective bargaining. Cities with over One Million Residents cannot take residency to an arbitrator, thus an arbitrator cannot overturn the residency requirement for us like they can anywhere else in the state.

Negotiation can remove the residency requirement if agreed by the parties.

If we wanted to overturn residency via arbitration we would have to get the law rescinded which is exactly what is being worked on now.

So "Sharpie," you were wrong, now go eat your humble pie!

This is for the person who called me a moron. I will preface this statement by saying I did say I'm not good in math. But, why didn't the City accept any proposals for the elimination of the 6 day work week. The reason is HOURS PER YEAR not hours per week. Add up the days that you work per week that overlap into another week, add them together at the end of the year and you will see what I mean.
You also have to add the half/hour per day you don't get paid for, but you are still considered available for assignment if an emergency arrises. The city didn't agree to change the 6 day work week because they couldn't fit a true 40 hour work week without losing the free extra hours on us obtained at the end of the YEAR, not the week.

And by the way your name calling is hurtful.

Have a nice day!

How about just paying us enough to live here!
Side jobs should not be a way of life. Has there ever been a survey done on how many Chicago Cops have a side job? The guys I know have to work side jobs just to pay bills, and send their kids to good schools, they are not doing it to drive a Mercedes. We do not make enough to afford to live in the city. So, if that is the case, and it is "the law" as another poster stated for us to live in Chicago than FOP needs to negotiate higher salaries to enable us to have some quality of life.
FOP do you think it should be normal for thousands of guys to work 2+ jobs just to survive here?? I have too many years on now to consider a move but to the younger guys my advice would be to test in the burbs now, get out while you can.

You may be correct but, you better be prepared for one hell of a commute if you think your going to find more affordable housing anywhere near Chgo. Even with residency lifted, you think the city is going to let you live wherever you want? Get real. Most departments put some type of mileage limitations on where you can go.

Became a cop. Bought a house in the city. Went up in value 100% in 5 years. Is there any suburbs out there that had the same property value increase?

You try to sell your house now. Im sure it wont be for 100% more than you paid for it 5 years ago. Plus, I don't give a rats ass if a bag of poo appreciates 100%...I don't like poo....I'll live in the burbs in a comparably priced house that won't artifically inflate and be happy as a clam. Enjoy your expensive poo.

Residency should not be an issue. If you want to buy a house in the suburbs, do it. Have some balls. I have two apartment building in Chicago and a home in the suburbs where my wife and children have lived for the past 16 years. this should not be a contract issue.

Where do you want your benefit? In the city or the burbs?

You bring up some good points as to the mold problems and equiptment, but as far as health care issues the city never promised me to foot the bill all my career. It was nice, I wish they did it again but IT WAS NOT A GUARANTEE so when it went away I was sad but not surprised.
--------------------------
When I came on the job, it WAS a guarantee. Not only for as long as we were on the job but for the rest of our lives, after retirement. They reneged and we took it in the ass!

The reason is HOURS PER YEAR not hours per week. Add up the days that you work per week that overlap into another week, add them together at the end of the year and you will see what I mean.
----------------------------------
What in the fuck are you talking about, "Add up the days that you work per week that overlap into another week"???

Sunday to Saturday.

COUNT HOW MANY DAYS YOU WORK!!!

Answer: 5. That's 40 hours.

End of story.

You're right: you suck at math.

So, if that is the case, and it is "the law" as another poster stated for us to live in Chicago than FOP needs to negotiate higher salaries to enable us to have some quality of life.
----------

The way the housing market and the current greedy sellers are, is that if we get a big raise, the home sellers will just demand more for their already over-priced rat-traps.

If the City *actually* paid me enough to afford that $450,000 ranch, then the seller will just raise it to $550,000 or more.

The free market needs to step in and correct this travisty. All the Republicans on the NW Side should agree with me. Lifting the Residency Rule will interject some balance into the housing market for us.

If is is really so damn great to live in Edison Park, people will still pay. If not then the prices should reflect as we choose to live somewhere else.

Hey SCC.

As of today, last time I checked, there were 164 comments to the RESIDENCY post.
From the amount of responses, mostly in favor of lifting the residency requirement.
Obviously this is a big issue with allot of response.
Any possibility you can throw something up every week so we keep this issue in the forefront? I have attended meetings, and recently added my “Wish List” to the survey on the FOP website. I hope other officers who are as committed to this issue as I am also log onto the site and fill it out.
Great job guys

REGARDING LIVING IN THE SUBURBS, I HAVE A FEW FRIENDS WHO ARE THE POLICE IN THE SUBURBS AND WHO LIVE IN THE SUBURBS, FIRST OFF JUST LIKE THE CITY , THERE ARE BAD SUBURBS BUT THERE ARE ALSO GOOD SUBURBS, AND BELIEVE IN OR NOT WITH ALL THOSE PROJECTS COMING DOWN DUDE IS NOT MOVING TO BURBS. BELIEVE ME THE BURBS DO NOT WANT HIM EITHER, THAT IS WHY ALLOT OF BURBS THAT HAD APARTMENT COMPLEXES ARE NOW CONVERTING THEM INTO CONDOS. DUDE IS MOVING INTO 008 AND 025 DISTRICTS. A FRIEND OF MINE WHO WORKED FOR STREETS AND SAN. WAS OFFERED A BUYOUT FROM THE CITY AND WAS ABLE TO RETIRED WITH 80%. HE STILL HAS TWO SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN, AND SOLD HIS HOME IN NORWOOD PARK, (GOT BIG BUCKS) AND MOVED TO ROSELLE,ILL. HE STATED THAT IT WAS BEST MOVE HE EVER MADE. HE SAID THE PROPERTY TAXES ARE HIGHER, BUT IT IS OFFSET WITH LOWER INSURANCE, AND CITY STICKER FEES IN ADDITION HE SENDS HIS KIDS TO GOOD PUPLIC SCHOOLS AND THE PARK DISTRICT IS EXCELLENT. IN ADDITION SERVICES ARE VERY GOOD AND THE ROSELLE POLICE DEPT, IS VERY PROACTIVE AND VERY GOOD, LIFE IS BURBS MAY NOT BE PERFECT, BUT WHEN I RETIRE I WILL BE OUT OF THIS SHIT CITY.

##############

It shouldnt have to go to arbitration!! If it does, we would have to give up alot to get it lifted. We shouldnt have to give up a damn thing. I dont know the specifics, but it sounds like the teachers are getting it lifted, not having it go to an arbitrator.
