- Chicago -- This wasn't any barfight caught on tape. An angry man pummels a much smaller female bartender. As it turns out, he's a Chicago police officer and late Tuesday night he was taken into custody.
Sorry, but we have zero sympathy for jagoffs like this. This sets back the public perception of every single person who has worn, is wearing, or will wear the uniform, star and shield of the Chicago Police Department. Is every copper like this? No, of course not. But it plays into the hands of every stereotype out there and gives opponents in the press, political circles and pulpits ammunition with which to advance an agenda that completely undercuts the police.
Certain people never should have been the police. Ever. And this is a prime example. Who on this board has ever thought, drunk or sober, that it's ok to beat a 115 pound woman who wasn't attacking you with a knife, bottle or gun? Over a fucking beer?

Does this mean the psych. tests are not working? I've been on this job for tweleve years and the one thing that does not cease to amaze me is how many "nutballs" are on the CPD. It is embarassing to the rest of us that are professionals doing our job. The public has a certain expectation of what our conduct should be. I once went to a boss I trusted, and told him about a powder keg out of control guy ready to explode. He made the call and personnel quietly handled it. All it takes is self control and a half a head on your shoulders and this won't happen. is it embarassing? Very. If it was a fireman, cop or city offical it would have been just as hot a topic. This video does NOT show the TRUE story... my client was selling cubscout cookies when solicited for drugs and sex by the bartender.
My client went behind the bar to confiscate the narcotics (plain view) and effect the arrest.
HE WAS THEN ATTACKED BY THE BARTENDER, and used necessary force to stop her. These attacks included: attempted scratching of his ankles by her fingernails; grabbing at his boots; thrashing about the floor; and being otherwise uncooperative.
Since no one in the tavern came to his aid, my client became physically exhausted and mentally confused by this ordeal. He exited, seeking help.
His lawsuit will include dramshop, wrongful arrest,civil rights violations...

A federal judge has blocked the city from suspending two police supervisors who won a discrimination lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department.
In April 2006, a federal jury awarded Sgt. Nancy Lipman $250,000 and Lt. Diane B. O'Sullivan $50,000. About two months later, Lipman and O'Sullivan were notified of one-day unpaid suspensions, which they contested in court, claiming retaliation.
Punished after grievance
"By attempting to follow through with suspensions against the plaintiffs despite the jury's verdict, the city has conclusively made the case against itself that its retaliatory conduct is likely to persist in the future," Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Cole wrote in a stinging opinion signed last Thursday. The trouble for Lipman and O'Sullivan began in 2000 when they filed a grievance against their commander, Marienne Perry, saying she removed white officers systematically and replaced them with black officers. Perry is black, and Lipman and O'Sullivan are white.
A month later, a police Internal Affairs agent filed disciplinary charges against Lipman and O'Sullivan for failing to immediately provide him with thorough, written reports to back up their grievance.
In 2001, Lipman and O'Sullivan sued the city, claiming the police department was retaliating against them for filing their grievance.
Jury calls it retaliation
After a trial in Cole's courtroom, a jury agreed that the city retaliated against Lipman and O'Sullivan, but the jury exonerated Perry, who is now retired.
Then last year, the city tried to suspend Lipman and O'Sullivan based on the Internal Affairs complaints against them, leading to last week's injunction by Cole.

It would be nice if anyone just sitting there could be charged. It would be great if there was a hard and fast law requiring citizen action. John Citizen is really great at slamming the police, but John Citizen almost NEVER gets involved. I know its our job, but people are really only out for themselves. CAPS is prime example...citizens show up, complain to no end, then do NOTHING to proactivley help out (NO! Calling 911 anonymously does NOT help---letting your dog lose after the problem element would...). "they keep dealing drugs. I keep callng annonymously because im scared. What's being done?" Anyone who has been around Tony off duty knows this was a long time coming. We even teased Sox fans and others over their near fanatical devotion to the White Sox through thick and thin (like Cubs fans, but the Sox win more). We were unfortunately cursed with liking hockey. Curious too see what happens in this case. three years ago my wife was beat and robbed in a downtown ally while she was leaving work. she was beat so bad that she was not found for about 2 hours laying in a pool of blood unconscience. she was in the hospital for just over a week and got screwed up pretty bad. this jag off was a homeless piece of trash who ended up gettting 5 yrs probation and the entire incedent was captured on camera. im curious too see what his copper gets... cause in my mind they are just as big pieces of trash and if the copper gets jail time which he should, this homeless fu*ker should have also....lets see if there is a double standard indeed..

Does anyone recall, not more than a few weeks ago, a video aired showing a robbery offender punching the crap out of an elderly woman in her hallway before taking her purse? It was horrifying just as the video of Abbate. Both were savage attacks that there can be no justification for.
I think the public's reaction to Abbate's attack would be great regardless of what he did for a living. It's just unfortunate for us that he also happens to have been a cop, one that puts us to shame.

I've live on the N. Side. I started on this job in the 90's and lived on the S. Side. There is no comparison. The south side sucks!!! N. Siders are a touch arrogant but, S. Siders are cocky assholes. I always felt like I was going to get jumped when I lived on the S. Side because I didn't grow up there. I feel extremely safe in my N. Side neighborhood. All my neighbors say high to me and know my wife, kid, and dogs.
The way to tell the difference between North Siders and South Siders is simple. A south sider started the trouble. South Siders look for trouble. There is no way that any of us could defend this a$$ after seeing what I just saw. I know it sucks seeing the police doing something like this, but there is no way a true cop would do this to someone who was completely outmatched and basically unable to defend herself against his size or against his attacks. He deserves to be arrested and fired for what happened.

He was charged with a felony, BECAUSE he was armed at the time. Being a police officer, he was carrying his firearm. He wasn't charged with agg batt because great bodily harm or public way, the aggravating factor was he did the crime while armed. Pick up a law book offices, know the law before you start bitching about things.

Remember that you typed this next time you look for ANY type of courtesy from another copper, be it getting out of an off-duty speeder or standing in line for county, you dumb ass.
I'm not defending this offender, but he was already arrested and charged for this crime over a week ago. Then the politicians got involved and all of the sudden the States Attorneys office ( not IAD ) wants to upgrade to a Felony and re-arrest him. Why wasn't the upgrade done in court? Why were the media waiting outside this coppers house? Think about that! This guy is a piece of crap, but this is a circus because the State's Attorney's office made it so!

This Dept. has gone to hell. the reason that we have officers acting like fools on and off duty is because there is no discipline. There is no uniformity. There is no accountability. If everyone on this job was held to a standard (like the orders state) then there wouldn't be these problems, (or very few of them)
Why is it that you look at the news and see PO's wearing pony tails, makeup, long nails, nail polish, uniforms that look like crap, hats on backwards, do rags, etc, etc, etc.

Curious too see what happens in this case. three years ago my wife was beat and robbed in a downtown ally while she was leaving work. she was beat so bad that she was not found for about 2 hours laying in a pool of blood unconscience. she was in the hospital for just over a week and got screwed up pretty bad. this jag off was a homeless piece of trash who ended up gettting 5 yrs probation and the entire incedent was captured on camera. im curious too see what his copper gets... cause in my mind they are just as big pieces of trash and if the copper gets jail time which he should, this homeless fu*ker should have also....lets see if there is a double standard indeed..

As a proud 20 year veteran Chicago Police officer, I can only say I hope Anthony Abbate rots in hell for bringing disgrace to me and my fellow officers.
Of course this made the news because he was a copper. of course he made felony charges because he was a cop. if anyone should know better it should be a cop. Lets say this situation happened different. these guys jumped in and tried to stop it. I think it would have went down something like this. This officer attacks the woman the men jump in to help the officer pulls his gun the men do what they have to. at that point the officer is hurt. the police show up and arrest everyone except the cop. the tape comes up missing. the officer is still on the force and innocent people are in jail. this is the reality of how things have always worked here in chicago. as for you south side asshole who say us north siders are pussies you call it what you want we know better. and we know when to mind our own bissiness for our families sake. i've been there for too much of this stuff to know better.
