More to the Story?

Channel 2 continues to try to blood out of a stone:
  • Chicago police officer Catherine Doubek is under investigation for her role in Joe Rossis beating.

As CBS 2 Investigator Dave Savini reports, Doubek was stripped of her police powers Thursday night pending the investigation into the incident, but it took five months and the publicity of a CBS 2 videotape before that happened.

Rossi says Doubek grilled him while the man she lives with, Jose Garcia, threw punches.
But do a number of comments by our readers point to other problems?
  • HEY IAD ROSSI WANTED ON A INVESTIGATIVE ALERT YOU MAY WANT TO MAKE AN ARREST IF U INTERVIEW AGAIN HIM AGAIN. TAKING A CR NUMBER FROM WANTED FELONS WHAT A JOKE. ITS ALL MOB RELATED......
  • From what I know about this incident, that prick got what he deserves then Maher has the nerve to say a search warrant should have been obtained to look for evidence of the crime. Well that couldn't happen because the prick never made himself available to the police to ascertain the location of occurrance but he sure made himself available to the media. When the fucker give the police a bad address in the begining then changes his phone number to make himself unavailable
So can anyone confirm an Investigative Alert on the "victim"? Or the lack of availability of the witness for a possible Search Warrant? And should this entire investigation fall apart, what kind of can of worms if the City opening up for officers to sue over wrongful suspension time and damage to reputations? Has anyone from Legal even ventured an opinion as to the rights of the accused? this is still America, right? Presumption of innocence and all that?

I'm quite impressed by the skills of Dave Savini, Phil. Could we hire him on as my fourth deputy chief at twice his current salary?
I could learn so much from him. One day I might actually command respect as a real chief of detectives--or at least a detective.

Oh, please? Can we, Phil?

Not only am I sick of how the media attacks us, I can’t wait until I have a chance to payback, I don’t care if takes years. I had an incident Friday night in which a drunken yuppie broad actually asked me if I was embarrassed to be the Chicago Police, she was upset that her friend was going to jail for being a fool, I told her I was proud to be the Police in Chicago and proud of the people I work with. The media blitz against us has the average pimp on the street bold enough to say this to our face. It sure doesn’t help when we rip each other in this blogg. We need to stick together now more than ever.

What a jab and punch in the balls to all sworn police officers in the country. The training and education as well as devotation given to this job, and the midget will make any political ally or hack the leader of us. It disgusts me in so many ways. We are on our own. It wont be long before we are fromally and criminally charged for CR allegations by shit heads. Police shoot and injure robbery suspect

Tribune staff reports
Published April 28, 2007, 5:39 AM CDT

A Chicago police sergeant who interrupted a robbery at a West Side gas station this morning shot and injured one of the suspects after he allegedly tried fleeing the scene, officials said.

An on-duty Harrison District sergeant was driving in the Garfield Park neighborhood around 3:50 a.m. when he noticed three men at a gas station on the southeast corner of Washington Street and Pulaski Road, said police spokesman Pat Camden.

Individuals who have been stripped of their police powers and assigned to callback are still being paid and therefore have suffered no damages. Once they are suspended pending seperation they have their pay suspended. If the Police Board exonerates them they receive back pay and they could sue the parties responsible.

Legal affairs job is not to protect employees. It's function is to render legal advice and provide legal services for the Department.

I do not know where most of you get your legal advice- probably from your bartender, but don't you think that with all of the lawyers chasing a dollar in this town, some suits whould have been filed and some cases resolved?

As to your rights- you have none. Get over it. Years and years ago the US Supreme Court ruled that Police Officers are to be held to a higher standard of behavior and condduct. That means that what applies to Joe Citizen, does not apply to you. It may not be fair. It may not be right. It is the law.

Oh, and if this broad is shacked up with a criminal, why should we feel so sorry for her again?

For those who don't know, Mike Shields has been:
1) a Detective in Area 4
2) a Sgt. in the old Gang unit
3) former Commander of the 005th Dist.
4) former Deputy Chief of Area 2
5) received a lateral move last October to the position of Deputy Chief, Group "A" Detectives, replacing Fred Coffey, who retired
at the mandatory retirement age of 63.
Shields may have a baby face, but don't let his youthful appearance fool you; he's the Police, he's been around for a while, knows the ins and outs of this job, and is a very capable boss.

This guy refused to cooperate (or even talk) with the CPD, plain and simple. He is a scam artist that watched the Abbate story and looked for a lwsuit. This was a fabricated story, and the power of the media to create something out of nothing without regards to how it affects real people's lives is distrurbing. If it was my case, this would have be UNFOUNDED 5 months ago.

In regard to the recent Abbate incident:

Many have written some pretty awful opinions about the Abbate incident and the medias’ airing of the disturbing video of his actions. When I saw the video of the beating of the female bartender I was also enraged by its contents.

But I think we all need to look further than our first opinions we experienced while seeing the video. I highly doubt that this is the first bad incident that Abbate was engaged in, the only difference is that it was captured on video for the world to see. Where was Abbate’s family, friends and police supervisors who had to observe that he had a severe alcohol dependency problem? Where was the police department in either helping or disciplining this officer on previously reported incidents and actions? In part we are all in fault for allowing this officer to embarrass the department and us.

An officer suffering from any chemical or alcohol addiction is a threat not only to the public image to the police department but also a threat to well being and safety of every department member. Our police department tends to overlook and avoid handling any personal intervention for the betterment of officers. The personal concern program for the most part is an “insurance program” to protect the department from litigation but seldom has been utilized to help officers in true need of help.

Many of us have or would risk our lives to save strangers from harms way but are not strong enough to intervene to express concerns about a fellow police officer. Abbate came for a police family and upon Abbate becoming a police officer, he joined our family. The biggest shame is not what he displayed on video but the department allowing this officer to rise to this level of emotional problems while still allowing him to strap a firearm on his side and work the streets for the City of Chicago.

The media is not without fault either, using this savage beating to boost ratings while airing its contents over and over. The media uses this video not for the possibility of finding some solutions to a problem but to create more tension with the public while they attempt some better ratings.

There is no easy solution to dealing with an organization with over 10,000 employees. Not to mention that there is many personal problems and addictions that may even be more prevalent to exist due to the stress and things officers see and experience on this job.

When the City announced 14 additional felony charges against Abbate, they did what they did best. Overreact to the situation, fail to address the real problems and failed to address their role and responsibility in allowing this to rise to the level that it did. Abbate gets now a total of 15 felony charges but not one department supervisor is even disciplined in regards to allowing this officer to be allowed to pass through the system without any intervention.

I will end with my disclaimer. I am no way supporting what Abbate did. 100 percent wrong. And Abbate should receive criminal punishment for those heinous actions. But as a lifelong cop and one who has been a detective for almost two decades, I have handled cases involving little innocent children who have had the worse of the worse done to them. Seldom have I have every seen this department or the State’s Attorney Office extend such a heavy hand as they did against Abbate against any of these offenders who have destroyed these children's lives. I also extend my prayers and wishes to the Abbate’s family. Those family members who have done no wrong but will suffer the consequences of Tony Abbate. And I offer my prays to the female bartender who suffered at the hands of Abbate and the failure of this department to handle this officer’s problem when they should of.

God bless all of us and may those in need in blue find the help and support they need.

Executed a search warrant and found a bunch of dope. Bad guy wasn't home and the ASA wouldn't issue a warrant but he was named as the offender in the report. When IAD called us down for the CR on an illegal search they were advised that the "victim" was wanted. They refused to make an arrest and said that they wouldn't even serve an arrest warrant if one had been issued. We beefed and were told something would be done. That was about 3 years ago. We're still waiting to hear fro IAD, FOP, etc. At least theCR came back exonerated. So this stoy doesn't surprise me at all.

If I may, I'd like to do this story from Dave Savinis point of view.

"Anquan, Jamarcus and Trenaldo were hungry. They we running low on gas for their 1984 Chevy Classic. So they went to a gas station at Washington and Pulaski. As Anquan was shopping for the right variety of hot chips and Jamarcus was picking up the blue pop, Chicago Police showed up on scene, guns blazing. Poor Trenaldo, who was in the process of selecting the right scratch off lottery ticket, was caught in the barrage of bullets. As the on scene police realized that this was not a robbery but a hot chip and blue pop run, they paniced. They called up Joey "Flatnose" Martino, a convicted maffia gunrunner, and closed off the scene.
Alegations arise that "Flatnose" was seen bringing "drop Guns" to the scene in an effort of Mafia - police friendship. As I tried to get an interview with on scene witnesses I spoke with Woodstock Jones who was drinking rum at the corner thinking about his college thesis he was going to do later that night he stated to me that "Them boys wasn't doing nothing wrong I'd tell ya more but they told me Abate or JF was gonna git me if I said anything." Detective Maria Maher was called to the scene but aparently she didn't have the proper polce credentials to get on the scene and was sent home. I'm Dave Savini for CBS 2 Investigates."

my prediction is that Abatte will come out of this smellin like a rose, with his job back and full restitution, although he will have to go thru being fired first, probably plea bargaining will bring his charges down to misdemeanors, and he will probably sue the City, the CPD, and the bar owner who employed the bartender. He will claim he was over-served and that it was the bartender/barowners fault.

Yeah for those who don't know Shields was a tact Sgt in 015 when some of his really "good" tact guys shot up an unarmed Mexican's Blazer containing his wife and 18 month old child. Luckily his tact men missed the Mexican ,his wife and baby. One of those tact guys went on to be an IAD rat until he was fired for among other things sexual misconduct, he was recently mentioned on this board, initials "CB". So the "very capable boss" Shields, was reached on the radio by the WC and also by a Sgt from the watch, because being their tact Sgt he should be at the scene and at least be involved in the paper work. The WC and the Sgt wanted to know when Shields was gonna come to the scene and then help with the paper. Shields refused to come to the scene or help with the paper and went AWOL, no time due slip nothing, for the rest of the night. He was so scared he took the radio and the tact car with him and just left.Just up and ran away so he wouldn't have to be involved in a bad situation he was just worried about his career not worried about doing his job as a tact Sgt. The man has no spine but the next day he did beef to the DC of 015 that the WC and a Sgt on the watch were racists because they called him all night trying to get him to come back to work and do his job, not to mention the WC wanted the radio logged in and the car returned. Now next time some suck ass comes on here talking about how "capable" this guy is I might tell the story of Mike Shields "the sexual predator and sexual harrassment boss." I believe that happened when he was the "capable" District Commander. I also believe that cost us taxpayers some money and was covered up even though there was talk of criminal charges being brought against this "very capable boss." Stay tuned.

I was working on the night in question. If I'm not mistaken this incident didn't involve anybody who worked on Shields team. In fact it involved another sergeant and two police officers, one of whom has been fired from the job on an unrelated incident. Shields and his team did respond to the scene and assisted in attempting to locate a weapon. By the way this wasn't an innocent Mexican Family, it was a group of black gangbangers.I didn't work for Shields directly. He was a decent supervisor and treated his team and the other people who worked on tact decent. When I was involved in an incident Shields was the supervisor that walked me through the process and helped me more than my sergeant. So Sarge get your facts right and stop being a hater!!!!!

The other incident was some more of Richardson's asshole tactical idiots brought in after the Broken Star bullshit. Now I remember that night too. I'm not a Sarge and not a hater just tired of suck holes like you coming on here telling people what a great guy some of these exempts are. They do shit the regular cop would get indicted and fired for and get away with it. If you were at that one it ended in the town of Cicero. The real police on the watch found that weapon about 5 miles away from where Richardson's idiots said the guy threw it. So Mr. Suck Ass tell me all about the poor unarmed Mexican and his family and tell me about the great stand up Shields who ran away that night. I don't hate the guy but he is a spineless fucking coward. Now you want to find someone who does hate him talk to the husband of the police officer he stalked and sexually harrassed and then threatened after she and her husband asked him to stop. Now tell us that story better yet tell us what that cost the taxpayers and then tell us why this sexual predator is still a boss on this job.

I recall that a certain PO who has since left the job was Dave Savini's best friend. Actually went to H.S and college with him. Is this guy giving him any info? He used to work gangs in 019.

Wouldn't that be a former PO?
Not to give his name, makes your claim very lame...

Deputy Chief Shields has been on the job 21 yrs. What's the problem? Been as decent as most bosses. I hear the undertones of racial haterade.
