Anyone See a Pattern Here?

  • BURR RIDGE, Ill.---- Three masked robbers broke into the suburban Chicago home of New York Knicks forward Eddy Curry early Saturday, according to police.

The robbery took place a little over two weeks after Miami Heat forward Antoine Walker was robbed at gunpoint at his Chicago town house.

In the incident Saturday, the offenders restrained Curry, his wife and an employee with duct tape as they went through the house looking for valuables, according to Deputy Chief of Police John Madden.

How did we ever solve crimes before the media helped out? Seems there's at least one crew around targeting high wealth and high spending sports figures who are more likely to have large amounts of cash lying around. Anyone wonder if it could have anything to do with.., oh let's just say, certain gang affiliations? Yeah, we don't wonder either.

As a beneficiary of White Male Privilege, I must disagree with the insensitive tone of your analysis, SCC. After all, a 'gang' is merely a group of individuals that share a common identity, even if that identity consists of little more than their association with one another. Often, in environments with few social supports, gangs provide youngsters with a sense of belonging.

As one scholar observed:
When young, newly rich celebrities are thrust into the limelight, and are not equipped to handle it, trouble is likely to follow. Adding to the potential for trouble is the strong desire some celebrities have to keep in touch with their pre-celebrity roots. He adds that "keeping it real" is especially important in the rap and hip-hop community--and the fans are especially unforgiving; "On the part of some athletes and artists, they just want to 'keep it real.'"

One of the reasons this is happening is an explosive mixture of money, celebrity-worshipping and high-living that is unprecedented in the history of athletics and entertainment. Significantly, the presence of a strong mother and/or father figure, and strong family support, seem to play a major role in determining how well young stars handle fame.

Minorities face an uphill battle in our society and have struggled for equality since America's inception. More often than not, they are treated as second-class citizens.

For far too long, white men have enjoyed advantages unavailable to everyone else.

White protestations that blacks receive equal treatment from police in their communities, are nothing short of laughable. A look at the prosecution of the war on drugs alone gives the lie to white claims of equal law enforcement. Though blacks are only 14% of illegal drug users, they are 35% of those arrested for possession.

What is needed, perhaps is a new look at how we categorize successful minorities and not dwell on their previous circumstances. Instead of belaboring the point that, at one time they may have belonged to a gang, why not say, "shows organizational commitment and works well with others"?

The emerging strategies must focus on the ecology of neighborhood violence using the public health and healing, child development, job development and community development models. I for one, would not be opposed to a hefty property tax increase for all white Chicago residents to achieve these goals. This is an investment in our future and it's the least we can do to help those in our society who face the largest disadvantage.

Dr Yuppie... You are out of touch. I have been in the ghetto and on the street for over 20 years by choice. Government handouts are a huge part of the problem... why work when I make more money not working I've been told.Families not receiving handouts are at a loss to save their kids..work or stay home and sit on top of the child. Kids can't walk the street, go to the store, walk to a friends house etc unless they belong to a gang. Gang members will tell you freely that they enjoy gang living (its fun)except when you are the victim of a homicide. Scenes of homicides are littered with bottles of alcohol which were drunk in celebration of the victims life. Nicknames, babies mamas, and associates can all be ascertained by writings left at the scene. Gang members tell you they are living a video. I could go on for hours about the misconceptions acadamia has about Gang Life. Speak to a 40 year old "retired" gang member and you will hear a lot of regrets and genuine remorse. They acknowledge that the occassional robbery or burglary are neccessary to make ends meet. Over age 40 is when older gang members become addicts and alcoholics lining the streets with their lost souls. Throwing money at social distress is not helping. 1 example and I repeat just 1 is paying families an (extra) 600.00 a month for a child labled LD. Now can you explain why a parent or a kid would want to improve.... when being a failure is financially beneficial. Drive through your south side districts when school is letting out and see how many kids are carrying school books. Re drug arrests and percentages.... I briefly worked a middle class white area and this is the difference I observed.... the drug business is on the streets in plain view with very little effort if any to hide the activity in black neighborhoods (just ask the residents and the police) and in the white neighborhood it is a well kept secret with most activity kept behind closed doors. I spend a large part of my day talking to and policing gang members. I can assure you that no amount of money will fix the problem only exacerbate it.

Dr Yuppie, Few social supports my ass. It is BS that these people have no social supports. Society does nothing but provide social support in all types of ways... Preachers, teachers,Social workers out the ass, financial aid in every way.. pay for babysitters, pay for rent, pay for heat and now electricity, pay for private schools, pay for busing, pay for furniture and clothing, pay for medical care, pay for xmas gifts, pay for food, pay for phones, now lets pay for water parks and on and on. There is no end to all the money spent on social support. Get real !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah your argument would be true if the so called "associations" provided anything but the support, education and means to commit crime. Its called guilty by association

I am white and take offense at Mr PHD. You sir are the problem in society. I am tired of paying for all the social "fix the problem" programs. The problems have been created by people like you. You have no faith in the abilities of gang members/poor .... all you see are people needing handouts. I on the other hand see people with potential.

Ya,PROFESSOR from liberal UofC. You throw stats around as if they are real. The Blacks have been taking advantage of color{poor me}.
The civil rights act has been in existence since 1964. Open housing, busing etc ,and educationally what have they acomplished? The same goes for spanish. Now look at the Orientals, they shine compared to other minorites. Why?
And we don't have to throw money at them as a cure all. Its nice to sit back and pontificate, and make excuses for the minorities.
If you have virtually free housing, great medical benefits and aide to children, and get pushed to the head of the line for promotions, now called merit, why the hell should you bother to better yourself when its handed to you on a silver platter.
ENOUGH!

Once again Coldtype, you're attempting to say words we never typed and then arguing against the created straw man. How typically liberal of you.

And once again, your BS will not see the light of day. If you want to deconstruct our posting, quote it. Do not assume what isn't typed is somehow what we are thinking and make facetious arguments based upon your feeble imaginations.

We've warned you of it time and again - Quote the argument at hand, not the one you want to defend. No more warnings.
