Cooley Cameo
Connected mob lawyer and Cook County Court fixer Robert Cooley made a cameo appearance at the "Family Secrets" mob trial. He was asked to leave the courtroom by the judge who noticed the stir Cooley created by just walking in:
- Robert Cooley was a crooked lawyer with mob connections. Almost 20 years ago, he turned informant and helped send judges, aldermen and mobsters to prison. He showed up Monday at Chicago's current mob trial and was asked to leave. The judge did not explain why he asked Cooley to leave the courtroom but clearly given Cooley's role in past outfit trials he might be a distraction for some witnesses as well as the five defendants.
We're not big fans of lawyers in general, but we did read Cooley's book and it wasn't shy about naming names, including a number of people still active in the political scene. Ed Burke in particular didn't come off looking very well and the fact that Burke didn't sue leads one to conclude that everything Cooley said was probably true. Cooley ripped off another quotable one today too:
He said the men on trial are not -- as alleged -- the outfit's modern day bosses. That person, he says, remains in the background, but still pulling the strings in Chicago.
"There's somebody right now who has been run the city for a long time and I'm not talking about Mayor Daley but hopefully his day will come," Cooley said.
Hmmm. Interesting to say the least.

Cooley's right, There are a few Don's that are still wraped in teflon. Ed Burke and Richard M. Daley ahoud be sitting in a defendant's chair too. Corruption was possible because of these and other players.
The film based on Cooley's life will reveal even more secrets than the book did...

I just spoke with my ex-college roommate Bob Cooley on the phone. Contrary to SCC's intro, Cooley was NEVER charged, let alone convicted of any crime.
He added that a major motion picture, based on his book "When Corruption Was King", is in the initial stages of casting and production.

The Fed's have caught on and will no longer utilize him in any additional trials because they are aware he cannot undergo a cross examination by a good defense attorney.
Pat Tuitte and another individual are suing Cooley and his ghostwriter for libel. That will be an interesting trial.
I asked Cooley who paid that mob defense lawyer to make a stink and cause all the free publicity? Cooley has not stopped laughing since.

Sneed hears Chicago Police are investigating reports of death threats allegedly made against Ald. Ed Burke and a doctor who lives in Ald. Burke's 14th Ward.
• • To wit: Police claim a possible motive for the threats was the closing of the South Side Video store, which sold pornographic videos and sex toys at 4107 W. 47th St., according to a police report.
In addition to 50 bags of sexual paraphernalia, police also seized an unregistered semiautomatic handgun found on a desk in a rear office and charged the owner, Samy Juma, a member of the Latin Kings street gang, with license violations and failure to register a firearm. (The video store was near the doctor's office.)
Juma has a rap sheet that includes convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, burglary and felony possession of a firearm, according to police records.
"We were inundated with complaints about the video store and found a loophole in the law to shut it down," Burke said.
An informant told police three men allegedly stated at a party: "We're going to take care of the alderman and the doctor. They don't know who they are ------- with," according to police reports

One nearly doing 100mph down Western...I stopped him twice ,one time in the fucking rain almost killing my partner and i as we flew through lights and sirens at 90 plus to catch the idiot (2 year wonder from TRU) and what does he do? Keeps fucking driving while waving his badge out the window. Your damn right i stopped and lectured him!! And anyone else who would just guess its a cop and allow them to do 100 down a major street is worthless and should get off the job. The other time I looked in my mirror to see an infinity roaring quickly up my ass and through 3 or 4 redlights i stop him he says to me "what the fuck I'm the pooolice i work in Starks office mother fucker i gots to go" enough said on that one.

Actually I was once written whilst working for another agency by a Vitalis generation copper who berated me and yelled at me like I was some 5 year old kid.
The vitalis generation hero has since retired. You have hair gel strokes as much as you have vitalis strokes.

PS I ran into Cooleys abogado brother during the course of a CSA investigation about four years ago-and he wasn't exactly representing the accused(nor was he the accused). What a caper. While some asshole (11:48 and 12:08) was just talking trash earlier on this thread, I sheepishly 'fess up that you got me blushing on your first paragraph. I was a naive, liberal college junior on summer break.
I lived at Parkside and Madison at the time. One beautiful day, I foolishly decided to skip the #20 bus and take an invigorating seven mile walk downtown on Madison St.
In hindsight, what was I thinking?
No sooner did I cross Sacramento Blvd., two dudes come out of nowhere and without a word, "punch" me in the back. After they fled, I felt my back was wet. Two stab wounds, one only an inch away from my heart. After 011 hauled me to Garfield Park Hospital, I got out the next day, miraculously transformed into the healthy "conservative" that I remain to this day.
Later, I came OTJ and worked 011 with some great cops including Sgts. M.S., E.N. and C.Z. Could one of them be your daddy?
One of Cooley's brothers did have a law office on Michigan Ave. in 001. Aside from your hilarious and priceless "Jiffy Lube" punchline, I have no comment on your last paragraph.
