Let the Police be the Police

We've been getting a number of e-mails and comments in the past few posts regarding the behavior of certain exempts in the face of the gang protests in the 011 District this week - and let's just all agree to call it what it actually is - a large portion of the community and not a few churches are backing the vice lords and the mayhem, misery, dope dealing and death they bring to neighborhoods over the rule of law, order and civilization.

Quite a few bosses showed up at the police shooting, and too many ordered officers to take no action, to retreat in the face of bottle and brick throwing, and overlook blatant damage to city property.

We will also point out that a few exempts were singled out for praise in attempting to uphold the law, defend officers and order police action be taken in the face of blatant misbehavior, but they were outnumbered by those with no balls.

The more police are ordered to back down and retreat, the bolder the lawbreakers become. We've seen this over our careers and the careers of those who came before us. The trouble here is the exact same one that crops up raising children. If you give a child no structure, no direction, no discipline, the child becomes more and more unruly, more and more demanding, more and more spoiled. Until one day this spoiled brat is out there attempting to raise their own children, but they have no idea how to do it because they never had the building blocks in the first place.

By ordering the police to back down, to ignore misbehavior, the brass are buying into the spoiled child syndrome so prevalent in society today. And unfortunately, someone, probably a cop somewhere, is going to pay with their health and well being.

To all of the SCC Fans:

As I type this there are no comments on the thread as of yet. I know people are going to start posting comments like: "Well LT E.B, or CPT J.C." etc, etc....

PLEASE!!! PLEASE, please use their name or last name if you can. I did not do too well on the last Detective exam - so I am not going to figure it out - but I do have a KMA Club attitude, and I will say something to a boss when I see him or her, about NOT being the police.

SO if you were there, or if you know, please use their names. These are our leaders, so they can deal with their names being on this blog, they get paid the big bucks and it seems they all like to see their names in print.

On the flip side, I also say name those that were there that EARNED respect and kudos as well. Not too many of those left on this job and they should be thanked!!

SCC, this is an excellent observation of our society; and it's something I've told others! Our jobs as police officers is very similar to being good parents. The "No Johnny, you can't have anymore cookies" statement is the same as, "Ray-Ray, it's against the law to sell dope, rape, murder and riot." If Johnny eats the cookies, he goes to his room; If "Ray-Ray" sells dope, rapes, murders and riots, he hits the lock-up.

Most frightening of all is your prediction that a copper may risk his life when a clueless exempt rank arrives and makes clueless decisions during a riot.

can we get together off duty and march down Chicago Ave. enraged about the savage nation known as the ghetto? Can we be outraged at how we are treated on a day to day basis? or is that racist and we'd end up with a suspension or worse? Can we march against the two legged dog? Can we demand the churches, civic leaders, and ordinary citizens hold the overwhelming number of bad apples accountable and quit blaming someone else for their own short comings? Can we march against the idea that running from the police FOR ANY REASON is ok? Can we march against the idea that one can fight with and/or run from the police because they are "scared" and then hide behind will-o-mina auntie who enables this behavior? I dont know a single officer, white, black, yellow or other, who goes to work with the intent of doing ill will against some random black guy they have never met. That idea which is being spread like cheese over flaming hots and is a fucking joke which is being embraced by the "reverends" all over the ghetto. THAT is what we should march against. We need to give it right back to this bull shit "community" and demand that they be held to a normal standard. A march of recognition should be held to let the rest of society know how these savages really act. A march to show that it really is not the police, but rather the welfare sucking, gang banging, dope dealing, no job having, cranking out babies losers that make up a significant population west of Western! you want outrage, I say the POLICE are outraged! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! When can we be outraged? And when is it time to tell the "community" we are fed up? I guarantee that gets on the news. "POLICE HOLD RALLY TO PROTEST THE GHETTO". The brass is not going to say anything. And notice this isnt happening in Edison Park. Hmmmm but thats stating the obvious. ANyway, enough for now. These complaints are old news.

All you have is the other officers in your district. Bosses have never backed working police, because they never were the police. They are politicians.

The media never backs police who do police work. If the police go into a fire and pull out Momma, the media loves you. While this is courageous, it isn't police work, its fireman work.

The police expose the lie that is the "urban culture." The honor student at Corliss H.S., the boy on the verge of becomming a rap star, the dealer JUST ABOUT to turn his life around, the tazed forty year old calling out for momma, the "cousin" fallin out at the ME's office, the boy on his way to college (GED willing), the "gotta git guns off da skreet" unless that gun is in the hands of the evildoer, the calls for "justice" from the same animals who do nothing but steal and deal and rob and rape and kill...

It was the same in the 1960's and it will be the same in 3060.

This is the job we choose. To bring law and order where there is none. The imprisoned 011th Dist. dealer is the same person who robs the Burger King in Elmhurst, the same person who rapes a girl leaving a bar in Oak Lawn, the same person who murders a gas station attendant in Naperville.

Nobody said this was going to be easy. There are roadblocks and pitfalls everywhere, but the good you do in the ghetto just might make life a hell of a lot safer for someone who didn't even know they should have appreciated you.

Don't back down.

So by removing the police ability to confront violence with violence, society will soon be faced with an animal with no checks and balances. Chaos will run the streets and we will just have to sit there and wait for one of ours to be seriously hurt or worse before we can go back to what these people respond to, react with and understand...violence.

I was there at 011 when the plan five was operational. There were nitwits in the crowd with bottles. They looked more like drunks who got caught up in "the happening" than jerks who were ready to throw bottles. We were ready then to lock them all up then if one of those bottles was thrown. The street deputy and the female sergeant there had only to give the word.

One bad guy dead was dead. Two squad cars were damaged: one with a cracked windsheild; the other with a rear door window knocked out. The OPS vehicle (the worse damaged) had a cracked windsheild and both driver side windows were knocked out. Sound to me that CPD won the battle here. Bosses on scene at 011 did a fine job.

The Blue shirts should of been removed and replaced w.cops in full riot gear & barricade the perimeter... "x" square feet for control. It was frightening to see them in the pics on the Trib. If there's going to be unrest and civilians breaking out cop car windows, etc. it's time to also roll out the OC spray and arresting these nuts.

WE SURE NEEDED DANA BACK IN AREA 4.

AT LEAST SOME OFFICERS MADE ARREST DURING THE SHOOTING HELPING THE GOOFS FROM OPS NOT GET KILLED BY FLYING BRICKS.

THAT VIDEO TRUCK WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO TApe the animals AND ROUND THEM UP LATER FOR MOB ACTION.

"Let the Police be the Police"

What an interesting concept, makes sense,to us, in law enforcement, anyway. I think we all agree with SCC on this one.
Those of us in Patrol see this every day and every night. We see the, "not my son" "not my daughter" response whenever we have cause and arrest their precious, honor student, child. Oh we have and will continue to have the usual preachers conducting the anti-violence marches etc. But when we take action, any action, in bringing any amount of civility to the crime riddled community(s) we're spat upon and treated like unwanted guests.

I think the one problem we're having with leadership in our department is the micromanaging and the concept of CAPS. Community policing is nothing new. Years ago a good police officer or detective knew who his street contacts in the community were and where the problems were. Good police officers and detectives today are no different. We know who the players are, we know where the problems are. What we need is the manpower to dedicate and actually spend sometime on reducing the problem and/or criminal element. As it is now, we simply race from job to job...ok,paper done... next job. The public has no clue how we do our job and our limitations. We continue to ask for more help in patrol, but we still see the medical abuse and inside office positions continue without change.
What's different is the level of respect, there is none. To often, an officer's judgement is questioned, and his/her decision reversed. An example was the Meek's fiasco. How many times did each of us have the same experience, and verbally ordered individuals back in their cars. All of us who work the street realize how bad a street stop can go and how dangerous it can be if not handled correctly. But God forbid we raise our voice and give Joe Public an order. Years ago a citizen wouldn't dare interfere with an officer's investigation or dare to disobey an order. Today Joe Public's ignorance makes this acceptable to question anything we do, anytime they want.

Thank God the officers in the latest shooting incident as well as the Taser incident are ok. Be safe out there.

Out of Daley's own mouth....WTF

"In the Johnson case, Daley recounted the police version of what happened, saying that officers responded to "a very, very challenging domestic disturbance" after getting a 911 call from Johnson's mother.

"She wanted him arrested," the mayor said. "The police attempted to arrest him, and he became very combative, resisted arrest."

Johnson was in the home despite a restraining order obtained by his mother and his sister, had just gotten out of jail and had 32 prior arrests, Daley said.

"Historically, people don't like police," Daley said. "They like you when you come, but they don't like the results. . . . You go on a domestic disturbance [call] and you have to arrest the husband, the brother, the uncle.

"They don't like it when you are pulling them out of the house," the mayor said. "Let's be realistic. People don't like to see their mother or father or brother or sister at the police station. People blame the police for everything."

In Harrison's case, Daley said the young man was "armed with a loaded semi-automatic pistol" that was found next to his body after he was shot by an officer. Harrison had been arrested 13 times and people who claimed to have witnessed the shooting have "refused to come forward to speak on this issue," he said."

Saw a TV program the other day on the Philadelphia SWAT unit. One thing one of their guys mentioned is that when a hot call comes over the air, units from adjoining districts race to the scene to help out. It seemed like everyone was racing to see who could get there first, and the coppers said that it was good for morale, as it fosters a sort of competitive spirit in their daily duties. I have to think that Philly must have adequate manpower to function like this, as a department without sufficient police would have their few cars running from call to call without time to help each other out. It's really very simple actually....
just make sure that the police have enough manpower and the normal male competition will kick in, making for a safer, more responsive department. Someone forward this info to Hizzoner.

This is another example of our "leadership" putting the bracelets on the cops. During the big immigration march, some anarchists, who had nothing to do with the march, left it and went to the Haymarket statue and climbed it. The cops there pulled them off and there were punches thrown, police bicycles thrown into the air, fighting with the Police. One of them ran off with no one in pursuit. The extra manpower arrived, wagons, everything...Then the "bosses" huddled in the intersection. The result...NO ONE WENT TO JAIL!!!! After that the jagoffs started taking PICTURES of the Police on the scene. Fighting with the Police and no one goes. In 34 yrs I've never seen that. I guess that they wanted the papers to print that a million people marched and there were no arrests. Tell that to the coppers that got punched.

Sorry this is so long, but had to get off my chest……

The major problem that is occurring on this blog is that there are many very old school coppers and the new generation coppers trying to say that they are the best and every other generation is wrong. Policing today versus 20 years ago is very, very different and some of the coppers that started working over 30 years ago were just given one radio and told to arrest the jagoffs. In my opinion, CAPS was the downfall of this department and as a blueshirt, what do I know. F*ck CAPS!!

The major stumbling block among the different generations of coppers is the policies that they have to adhere to. Time after time, I read on this blog that people deserve a “wood shampoo” and we all know what that means, but at the present time there are too many cameras and too many bosses that will not back us up. That doesn’t mean that we don’t want to do it or we are afraid to do it because we are college educated, it just means we don’t want to end up in jail or looking at a CR from a supervisor for insubordination. A fine example of this is Mike Mette and he used his fist.

Twenty years ago, the only people that had video cameras were news crews and by the time they got there, the only thing that was going on were ambulances picking up the carcasses from the beatdowns. A major trend going on now is viral video and we all know from the Abbatte video how popular this is. Could you imagine some of the video that could have been captured at or outside Ira’s (RIP)??

I’ve also read that a certain badass copper D. Snethen had around 20 police shootings in his career. I know that Snethen was a bad mo-fo, respect his fine work, and that I couldn’t even make a pimple on his ass, but with today’s standards, Dave would have been put on a behavioral intervention plan and tucked away at callback to keep the heat down. Now-a-days if you discharge your spray too many times in one year, look out there is something wrong with this copper and off to counseling you go.

It’s just a different policing era and I totally respect all of the previous coppers before me, but to compare them is like comparing apples and oranges in my opinion. I hope that we can all get along and GOD BLESS THE CPD.

An indication of what Chicago will look like in the years to come:

"The Latino population in the Chicago area and throughout Illinois continues to soar, while growing numbers of whites are leaving Cook County for outer suburban counties such as Will, McHenry and Kendall Counties, according to new population estimates released by the Census Bureau today.

DuPage County's white population dropped by nearly 5 percent between 2000 and 2006, but experts say the decline could be explained by empty nesters syndrome, the departure of college-age children that causes the average size of households to shrink.

The data show a continuation of decade-long trends of Latinos increasing their presence throughout the state while more whites move farther away from the Chicago region. The black population also continues its steady population growth in both the inner and outer suburbs."

In one of the strongest conflicts yet between Republican presidential front-runners, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney attacked rival Rudy Giuliani Wednesday, implying that Giuliani supported illegal immigration when he was mayor of New York.

"If you look at lists compiled on Web sites of sanctuary cities, New York is at the top of the list when Mayor Giuliani was mayor," Romney said at the Abbey Hotel here. "He instructed city workers not to provide information to the federal government that would allow them to enforce the law. New York City was the poster child for sanctuary cities in the country."

I've had it with this nonsense. I'm through with being a working policeman! The cowardly exempts who ordered no action be taken against rioters and bottle/brick throwers ought to resign. Of course they will not. How many shitheads have now been emboldened to attack the police without fear of consequences?

This bullshit is the last straw. Made my last pinch last week, don't plan on EVER doing another one, if I can help it. I'm laying down, and I encourage everyone to join me. I'm just going to kick back and enjoy watching the carnage. I hope they burn the whole fucking city down.

Hmmm...like telling coppers to restrain themselves so that they don't end up getting hurt? Yeah, real ball less. You know what? I'd rather have everyone of you tough guys calling me ball less than having to visit you in the hospital over some kind of macho bullshit attitude that could have been prevented. Off the topic: Does Williams, chief of patrol, only really have a GED? Please tell me that I'm wrong. And, is was one of the best qualified for Supt. Hasn't anyone told the dumbass about Calumet College or Lewis, even St. Xavier. All you need to do is show up a couple times and get an A. A retarded kid would be on the honor roll. It is his own fault that he is not qualified, 14 years in an inside position - please.

Phil Cline is feeling the heat of allegations made 20 years ago. It started in 1980 on the West Side. Then Sergeant Cline broke up the largest heroin/cocaine operation and arrested a man named, Charles "C.W." Wilson.

During Wilson's trial, a federal judge questioned the authenticity of dozens of Cline's search warrants and dismissed the related evidence. Cline maintains an investigation later cleared him of falsifying the warrants.

There were also allegations by defense lawyers that Cline had concocted evidence, stolen money and took bribes --allegations Cline never refuted at trial because he had vowed to take the fifth if called to testify in the case that he himself had supervised.

None of this is new. Weak, inexperienced, imcompetant, bosses have plagued this job forever.

Sweet revenge: A long time ago a similar situation developed at a police station and as usual the bosses panicked and did nothing.
Caving into the local rats/revs.

Some enterprising officers lowered the American flag from the building and replaced it with a white surrender flag. Then they jambed the pole mechanism so that white flag stayed there for six days, much to the embarrassment of the dithering political hack bosses inside.

Priceless!

Do you know why some bosses are scared? Because those bosses were the ones allowed to work inside before they learned how to work outside. Working the desk or lock-up before learning how to police is the problem. If you have less than five years on the job you should be in patrol. Not a unit, but in a beat car. If you're light duty that's different. But once you are full duty back to the beat car. Too many new officers inside doing desk work. Let someone with time do the job. If no takers, rotate the old timers. But no one with 18 months and a day should be working the desk;making the A/A sheets.

"The trouble here is the exact same one that crops up raising children. If you give a child no structure, no direction, no discipline, the child becomes more and more unruly, more and more demanding, more and more spoiled."

As the mexicans say any time they have even the slightest beef with anything "MIRA, LETS MARCH!"

This kind of lawlessness can only be stopped by a consistent show of force, and a committed department lead by good commanders who know how to deal with this type of behavior. Some previous posters mentioned the analogy of disciplining children so they know there are boundaries to their behavior. No discipline results in spoiled brats who break stuff and do whatever they please. Reminds me of the July 22, 1978 riot at Pontiac Correctional Center where 3 guards were killed. Illinois State Police were called to the scene and were lead by Captain Charlie McCarthy from District 15. He marched the troopers into the prison yard in military formation, dispersed them in a skirmish line, and ordered the rioting inmates to cease and desist, and drew a line in the sand. Then, using some great psychological intimidation, ordered the shotgun wielding troopers to lock and load. The sound of dozens of shotguns being racked for action most likely sent chills through the inmates spines. Needless to say, the inmates knew that the State Police were not going to take any shit whatsoever and order was restored soon after that with no additional loss of life. CPD needs commanders like our now retired Captain McCarthy from ISP. Someone who isn't afraid to do what's necessary in a tough situation. But without the support from the Mayor and Superintendent of Police on down, field commanders will have their hands tied, and areas of Chicago will end up like parts of France, controlled by violent gangs. Wake up CPD bosses. Your officers need some real leadership, not political correctness.
Retired ISP Sergeant
