So we spent some time with our vast editorial staff, speculating about the mayor's rejection late Thursday and what it all meant. The mayor states he wants to keep all three rejected names under consideration so as to ensure that he has the "best possible person" for the job.
What does the mayor think the search committee was doing for the past two months? We mean besides doing exactly what the mayor told them to do. The committee, named by the Police Board that the mayor appointed, did what they were supposed to do and gave the mayor the choices he wanted, including a guy from New York with zero possibility of being selected. That made it a coin flip decision.
Now the mayor wants everyone to jump through hoops again? For what dinner theater is this performance being staged?
Here's our take:

- If any of the rejected names appear on the short list again, that's the pick. No ifs, ands, or buts.
- If Maher's name appears on the short list, it's hers. Unless Kirby's appears also. The SOS trials might start in September and Kirby might get some "corruption fighting" credentials to boost her stature.
- It still won't be an outsider.
Whatever happens, we'll be posting rumors left and right.

SCC, you forgot a 4th prediction: The mayor has come to realize that Seiser does indeed run it, and has cleared the way for the police board to put forth his name. Seriously, what else could it be?

It was the NY guy, and Grau was asked to be 1st Dep - that is why he had 2 meetings with the King.
The King caught wind from the black leaders that it was their turn - and they would protest and raise hell, and lots of their people would commit civil disobedience (yea, I know it is a stretch) and so on. They want a person of color to lead us, but, as pointed out numerous times, Williams had a lot of baggage.
The King had to put a stop to this and look like he is really interested in their BS actions, so now he is looking for a lacky to be 1st Dep. It will be under the guise of looking for more people to be Supe, but it is the 1st Dep spot that we are looking to fill.
Dana, will go and retire without a word now, b/c, he is acting Supe, and he will retire out at a higher pay rate. Do not get caught up in how long he will be in the pay rate, ask yourself, does it really matter? Answer, no. The King will take care of him and he will go w/o a word and it is one less idiot, and the King knows he is an idiot, to worry about.
MAHER???? You CANNOT be serious!!! She's an idiot. You'd want us to look at her "deer frozen in headlights" look for the next 5 or so years? She's proving that she couldn't manage her way out of a paperbag with the way she's mismanaging what she's got now. Plus, have you seen her talk with the media? If it's not Williams/Grau in some combo of the top two, then there is some EXTREME shenannigans going on. Like them or not, they are the two with the knowledge, presence and connections to run this Department.

You gotta love that park car (2505) job in 025. On weekends you change your hours from 1500-2300 to 1400-2200. Galewood Park blows up with drinkers throwing bottles at the police. But the park car goes home? Don't the parks close at 2300? If so the park car should work a 1600 start. If a job happens in the park shouldn't the park car handle it?
If Daley had announced his choice before Big Al came to town, he wouldn't have this problem. Big Al comes in, lambastes Daley, who stutters, mutters, and flutters. Then IKE comes charging to to Daley's rescue. There is a very heavy price to be paid for that.
The next Sup will be Ike's guy.
Guess who. Meanwhile Big Al gets just what he wanted when he came here: A black Sup. Gotta hand it to the black combine. They have "King Dicky Deuce" dancing like a martinet. His knee jerk reactions just popped him one in the chin.

I have to agree with the 1st poster. I think the second meeting Daley had with Grau was to ask him to be 1st Deputy and assist the New York guy as superintendent.
I think Grau told him he only wanted the top spot and was going to retire if he didn't get it.
I don't think anybody can predict whats going to happen right now. I don't think Daley knows what he's going to do or really cares at this point. Daley is coming apart at the seams. The Rev Sharpton shook him up a little bit. Daley clearly wants to vent but won't. I don't know why, he is the king.

You truly no nothing about Dana, or this department. He's done a horrible Job! Cline tried to save him from embarassing this department many times over - that's why after the last straw, he was stipped of his duties, and given limited responsibilities.

So, don't think Starks is there because he's qualified. Like many bosses on this job, they're there because of who put them there, not because they're competent.

Deal cut with Keating , 1st and the Mayor for divsion of power. Reverends happy, mayor happy and that is all she wrote. Starks is the Sup. Keating is the 1st.
Just imagine the damage this is going to cause. Dana's dollies are already bragging how they run it now! On the bright side,if he runs the CPD like he runs his office we are all gonna get laid a lot more often!

Off Topic, but the tragic Minnesota bridge collapse reminds me of what Richie has been doing of years. Spending millions on flower pots, iron fences and Olympic bids while the city infrastructure goes to hell.
Just think if all the ashphalt and labor put into speedbumps were put into potholes and repairs. As for Kushner, although he is qualified for the position, he has ties to Area 2 and the Burge fiasco. No chance for him.
Word around the NYPD is that Tom Belfiore was given a "secret bonus" to apply for commissioner in Chi-Town, knowing he'd never get it.
No outsider in their right mind would apply for Chicago's top cop job.

We are a knee jerk Department, LA hired a New Yorker and we will to, but which one is the question.
Grau and Williams were dumped from further consideration because the mayor caught them both lying through their teeth over a fabricated March 22, 2006, meeting of the CPD Awards Committee.

Cline's talk that he will "Never Forget" the fallen officers of the CPD is a lot of B.S. He forgot Chicago’s first to fall. He is a sneak...which is the worst kind of coward there is.
There is no doubt that Constable James Quinn was the first CPD officer killed in the line of duty. Can you name one other line of duty death that has had as much scrutiny as Quinn's? or has been held to such a high standard?
Quinn is the only one to have been upheld by the Chicago History Museum, the Illinois State Legislature and the Chicago City Council...but that isn't enough for those fumbling bumbling idiots the police brass call its "historians."
