A federal jury has found that Chicago Police officers harassed a female colleague who dared to join an undercover unit that previously had been all men.
Ann McDermott's fellow officers put pornography in her mailbox every day and when she complained about it, they accused her of being a "beefer" -- an officer who reports fellow officers.
The jury awarded her $150,000 in damages Monday. The city also will be on the hook for around $500,000 in legal fees for her lawyers at Loevy & Loevy.
McDermott went back to work Tuesday night still feeling like a pariah among fellow officers for breaking what she called the officers' "Code of Silence," but she felt a measure of vindication.
"I told the jury exactly what happened and the Chicago Police Department, including one commander, one captain, two lieutenants and seven sergeants all tried to say I wasn't telling the truth and the jury saw through it," she said.
Based on the verdict, the Internal Affairs Department, which had dismissed most of the complaints McDermott brought, will take a second look, said police spokeswoman Monique Bond.
'It's very lonely' as outcast
When McDermott first started making complaints, an old boyfriend on the force told her he took a call from someone who said, "You better get your girlfriend in check before someone gets hurt."
"I was so scared I put my condo on the market to sell," McDermott testified.
A former teacher, McDermott joined the force in 1997, first working just north of downtown in the 18th District, then transferring up to Rogers Park. She asked to join the undercover gang unit, becoming the only woman on an eight-officer team.
Starting the first day of her new assignment and continuing every day for six months, she found porn in her mailbox -- "Females naked posing; much more graphic hard-core pornography, men and women having sex in different positions," and a woman who had soiled herself, among other images McDermott found disturbing, she testified.
She transferred to the 17th District in Albany Park but found her tormentors had called ahead and arranged to have officers there put porn in her mailbox, she said.
The $150,000 does not make up for being an outcast for speaking out, she said.
"Five to six years later, people still don't talk to me, still don't trust me," she said. "People look at you like you have five eyes. Nobody talks to you. It's very lonely."

A "generic tagging name" was found on a wall at Gold Star Families Memorial and Park at Waldron and Museum Campus on July 23, police said.

Past Saturday...was driving near a busy N/W side bar...working...and while driving through the alley here comes this Ford Explorer literallt spinning into the alley from the street nearly hit me head on...I pulled along side of the vehicle and I notice two young males in the vehicle and then the driver says "What's up dude? I'm a cop" and shows me a badge out the window...It was apparent that this individual was imbibing in alcohlic beverages and making his next stop at this local watering hole...I looked at him and said.."Dude?" ...mind you that I am in a marked car and in full uniform...and a supervisor...I told him to slow down as he almost hit my car as he flew into the alley....his excuse was that he was "Trying to get the parking spot out front of the bar" He didn't care that he almost collided with a police car while he was 501 though....unbelieveable...Dude...mabye if and when he does fuck up...he'll realize that he can loose his job...I just shook my head in amazement! I would never have addressed any supervisor on this or any other department as "Dude"....what a disgrace.

on vacation here,you would not believe the emergency response,very well orginized,they believe that in two seperate inspections the bridge was found to have strutural deficiancies, repared and found to have more. old structure built in 1924, no act of terrorism..say a prayer,6 dead 30 more missing hundreds injured most minor, fell 60 feet..god bless all those who will be working a lot of hours..

Grau was out of town Tue and Wed so he did not meet with the mayor at 1000hrs on Wed, 8/01/07. I work at 35th Street and know that for a fact. Whoever said Grau had a meeting at 1000hrs Wed with the mayor could not be any more wrong.

I call Bull shit ...he did meet with the Mayor I saw him at 930 am on weds at the city Hall building...he was dropped off, and had his driver find legal parking..
he left the building at 1130 am..called his ride and the driver picked him up ..
I know this because I work the front door..
I will also tell you this every news person down here knows he next.. they were waiting for the announcement like vultures.
most of them have been already tipped off by someone in the mayors office...
