"Alleged" Burglar Shot
- A man was shot by an off-duty police officer Saturday morning after he allegedly broke into the officer’s home on the Southwest Side near Midway International Airport.
The Chicago police officer and his wife were sleeping in their home in the 6000 block of South Austin Boulevard when the officer heard a noise and went to investigate, police News Affairs Assistant Director Pat Camden said.
The off-duty officer saw the offender, who apparently entered the home through the back door, and was in the process of arresting the suspect when the offender was shot, Camden said.

We're a big supporter of the "Castle Doctrine," which advocates that a person's home is their castle and there is no obligation to retreat in the face of an intruder. Anyone caught in someone elses home by the homeowner should be able to leave in one manner only - on a stretcher in a body bag.
And the homeowner, whether cop or civilian ought to get a medal, a key to the city, and ammo to replace what was expended.

Libel. Libel is publication of false information that causes injury to someone's reputation. Although libel isn't applicable to the news broadcast, it does apply to printed collateral related to the news program, including the script, segment names in notes and file names. Anyone can sue for libel, but there are a lot of factors behind whether they will win. The best approach is to avoid publication of false information.
Wording of accusations is an area where we need to be particularly careful. All people are innocent until they are proved guilty in court or they plead guilty.
When someone is arrested, they are not charged with anything. Most news organizations avoid reporting on arrests until charges are filed unless the arrest itself is important news. If reporting on an arrest, the wording should be "Person xyz was arrested in connection with some incident"; not "Person xyz was arrested for some incident."
The police can't charge anyone with anything; this must be done by the a member of the district attorney's office.
Be careful before calling anyone a crime victim. The suspect must be proven guilty before you can say the other person is the victim of the crime. You can use wording like "the alleged victim..." or "the accuser."
Use the official charges. If the wording is awkward, put it in the background rather than the lead.
Avoid using the word alleged because it can be dangerous. Where possible use words like "accused" or "said", and include who is making the accusation. For example, "Police accused person xyz of robbing the bank." A good use of alleged is when reporting on an incident that may or may not have occurred. For example, "the alleged rape occurred behind the stadium bleachers." Until someone is proven guilty, there is no proof that the rape occurred.

i ran into Hale Demar in shore's a few weeks after he did the great deed...i asked if he was looking for another gun..he said no..just looking..i told him we all thought he did a great job,he thanks me, and then i told him that i had several guns at home that i did not use on the street and that if he wanted one, i would give it to shore's and they could transfer it to him..he thank me and declined my offer.
Police coverage is slim around here (Clearing, etc.). So we have to band together. This idiot is lucky not to be in a pinebox.

Had to been a scary situation. I'm sure the copper and his wife both feel somewhat violated from the intruder gaining entry to their home. Glad the copper got one off and that he and his wife are okay. Fuck all these savages out there. At least the media actually got wind of that incident. Last month in North Beverly, another Chicago Police Officers' home was home invaded. He was home alone asleep in his room, his 8 yr old son and his 11 yr old friend were asleep in the sons room, the 10 and 6 yr old daughters were asleep on the living room floor, 1 1/2 y.o baby asleep in crib, the live-in sitter was asleep in her basement bedroom, and the coppers' spouse was working midnights. 6ft5, 300ish lbs, male,1, apparently walked in through the sliding doors in the kitchen. Hearing the noises in the hallway, the copper opened the door and came face to face with 'ol boy. After a struggle, the bad guy struck the officer in the head and ran out the back door. The officer grabbed his gun told the 10 yr old(who was now screaming), to call the police, and pursued to offender. Of course he was no where to be seen. 022 took their usual sweet time arriving with no emergency equipment activated. they didnt even come to the house. They stayed at their car and wrote a "burglary" case report without getting ANY of the facts correct or talking to the children or sitter. Once the officer realized the case report was incorrect, he told the Commander of 022. He was told it was no big deal. 022 tact officers along with area 2 detectives put together a photo array from which the offender was chosen. The offender was arrested and a physical line-up yielded another positive identification. Indictment for bad guy...good! IAD looking into copper.....bad! Why would anyone terrorize their whole family in the middle of the night and make up a ridiculous story? Libel???? Maybe Lawsuit!!!!!

I can't speak for the 2w, but the 3rd and 1st watches in the 008th District are sme of the hardest working Policemen I've ever had the privilege of working with. They do so much with so little. You can't blame them for the extreme shortage of manpower (almost never a sector car up on 2nd or 3rd watch). Or the 1w "detail" to provide private security to one "Unique Landscaping" --this downs a beat car nightly. We've been doing that for better than two months now. (Business owner is of Marquette 10 fame.)
It might also help if the Tac and Gang teams did anything other than their copious "quality of life" arrests. 3w & 1w watches routinely start and end in a "wrap". How about they nevermind the pimpy dice arrest or drinking on the public way arrest and help the beat cars out once in while? Seriously getting the bottle gang off of the corner on the east end is like perfume on a pig for the "quality of life" over there.
To the poster who wants to clear something up and says 812 3rd shift works there ass's off, maybe on the east end they do, but they never actually in there beat.Your comments regarding the whole beat of 812 is so totally outline, not all kids in 812 are little jagoffs(your words)maybe you should look in the mirror and you will see the jag off in yourself. There are hard working police out there in 008 and dog asses. Just like every other district. I have worked TARA and worked at several other districts. Believe it or not 008 isn't the worst out there. However, not all the districts have that many po's living in it such as 008,022, 009 etc. There is only one district that is as big as it is with many po's....that's 008. No matter how much you want to protect it, patrol it, it's impossible to do. As far as 812 being a dog ass ...can't say anything about 812 3rd and 2nd watch. Midnight 812 work.
About guns, what is with Mayor Daley and Gov' Blago and their anti second amendment attitudes? I believe that they and others like them are closet-Marxists.

I dont have a dog in this fight as I dont work in 008 but I do live there and drive by that location all the time, but let me say to the poster who stated that 5821 S Central has cameras recording the comings and goingings of everybody. You are 100% accurate. More than 10 and less than 20 visible cameras. WE ARE LIVING IN A POST-9/11 ERA. There are ones you cannot see. Remember FAA rules, and forced Homeland Security Compliace.
The problem here is that our supervisors allow this to happen.
Most Importantly why have we degenerated into a blue shirt vs. blue shirt- 8?? or 22?? or 16?? are dogs?- Why are we willing to throw each other under the bus? When we need to stick together? Yet we work without a contract, and have become our own worst enemies?

All I have to say is thank god that the coppers family is safe. Burglars in Mt. Greenwood & Clearing/Garfield Ridge know where the police lives, along with the guns, jewelry, and money. I only wish that the hype was killed. Lets all wish the best for the copper and his family.
Family friend works for ADT. First of all, ADT has parallel support now. Has for sometime. If someone cuts your landline phone the system goes wireless. Second, he says the biggest targets are cops. Everyone knows where they live and that they have guns in the house. Call 1-800-ADT-ASAP. It's worth it. Make fun of the lawn sign all you want but it's a deterrent for the crackheads. Even if the system is off house/garage doors chime if someone opens it. You get a break on your house insurance and you don't have to worry about your wife and kids when you're working nights. I'm sorry we didn't get a system years ago. We don't worry about anything now.
