Those of you unfamiliar with the Berwyn PD, it is currently headed by former CPD Lieutenant Bill Kushner. Chief Kushner has been a fan of our site almost since the beginning and writes to us on occasion. He had a lot of fans on the CPD (and more than a few detractors, too.)
In any case, Chief Kushner has given us this info to share with our readers, probably hoping to grab a few people currently fed up with the CPD. If I wasn't retired ( and not so old) I'd work for Billy K. anytime , anyplace or anywhere. When I was with City College at the academy (many years ago) Billy was one of the best instructors and one of the only sergeants theat I trusted. I don't think you could go wrong making the move.

What is Boston Mass. getting, I heard that they have the best money and benefit wise.
The southside sure knows how to kick the weekend off..... Between Area 1 and Area 2 in the last 24 hrs. there has been 17 people shot, four of them Hyde Park School students in separate incidents and 5 homicides... as well as a police officer shot and the offender.
The best one is in the 008th district, where the responding beat car to shots fired gave it the old 19-P and woooo and behold a few hours later a concern citizen calls 911 to report two subjects slumped over the wheel of a car with the windows all shot out. At least the next responding car was able to find the two people shot to death in the car that the first car missed.
well its only about 3 am, so I am sure a few more people shot and/or killed will roll in before the sun rises.

Ok...this is what I heard
we are currently accepting applications for an entrance exam on 31 Oct to coincide with Halloween. We figure their is such an abundance of inside officers who dress in police costumes and pretend to be the police, why not. In addtition, we will continue our tradition of integrity in the testing process by giving the same test again, after we post the same questions on the internet. Applicants are encouraged to take advantage of this new trend in testing.
Liberal weapons policy:
We also have a liberal weapons policy in that officers are given reams of paper. If and when an armed offender turns and points a gun at you, officers are encouraged to immediately tear open the ream and roll each sheet of paper into a ball to throw at the offender. We encourage officers to train themselves in this technique at home while watching the Bears on TV.
Our medical policy is second to none. If and when you feel an unexpected hang nail,or feel fatigued, just call in and we'll gladly give you the day, week, or year off, really.
Our technology is discussed in law enforcement circles all over the world & galaxy including the town of Wetwang, in Yorkshire (real town BTW). Yep, we have little birds in our radios that chirp,singing us beautiful songs to calm our nerves after about 4hrs. of listening to silly stories of 10 yr.old kids who have tantrums and won't go to school.
We pride ourselves on being legal scholars in that within a 5min time frame,people expect us to solve their child custody dispute with their ex-boyfriend,who is the daddy of one of their 12 children,and who are wards of the state,who children suffer from every medical condition known to man,and has a current court visitation order that allows visitation on nights that have a full and partial full moon,occurring on wednesdays,on even numbered months and they need transportation and shelter for 12 kids,two dogs,a cat,and a guy named Joe who hangs around at meal times and lays on the couch..etc. well, lets just say a code of 19P works for me.
Oh..and the citizens love you. Each and every school day, the pre-med students actively seek you out. You'll be given the opportunity to give them instructions on things like, how to get on a bus and just go home,how to walk home peacefully without pummeling & maiming each other before they reach the end of the street. They love you, really.

STNG) CHICAGO A man was shot by an off-duty police officer Saturday morning after he allegedly broke into the officer's home on the Southwest Side near Midway International Airport.
The Chicago police officer and his wife were sleeping in their home in the 6000 block of South Austin Avenue when the officer heard a noise and went to investigate, police News Affairs Assistant Director Pat Camden said.
The off-duty officer saw the offender, who apparently entered the home through the back door, and was in the process of arresting the suspect when the offender was shot, Camden said.
The offender suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is listed in good condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
No one else was injured in the incident. The police Office of Professional Standards is investigating the shooting, Camden said. It is not yet know if the offender was armed when he invaded the home.
No charges have been filed as of 3:55 a.m.

As a previous poster stated about being a suburban cop...just like the old song,"Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide", If you don't have clout there, your screwed once you, or somebody thinks you, step on your d*ck. And even if your a worker, someone almost always thinks your doing something wrong (e.g. "Oooh they puttin' sh*t on people, ah juss know..." etc.) At least in this "cronyized assed department" there is always somewhere you can transfer to for a "fresh start" once the honeymoons over in the old place.
But there's always "different strokes for different folks that rules the world", so if it works for you, then good luck, but, remember the "grass is always greener on the other side!"

I heard Acting Supt. Dana Starks applied for the patrolman's position at Berwyn and was told he wasn't qualified to be a P.O. in that town. Go figure, ok to be Supt in Chicago though! I guess a G.E.D.'s earned through a correspondence school is not good enough.

What the fuck is going on in 023 Dist? This morning at 0400 there was a robbery and CSA in the area of Halsted and Roscoe. Apparently no one on midnights was available or wanted to do police work. 019 Dist guy had to come over and safe the day. 019 Dist guy grabs the offender for robbery and CSA. Great pinch! Thisis the 2nd time this week 023 Dist 1st Watch has fucked up. Some how they couldn't find the homicide offender after the OPDO called it in earlier in the week. That watch is soft as puppy shit.

Is this the same Billy K who couldn't take the hint when the (at that time) new Commander of 003 told him that he no longer needed his services as tact Lt., and he tried to pressure the Cmdr through his contacts downtown to keep him there? The news nedia are 100% correct and accurate in their reporting of this incident. Both sides agree the man was in fact shot. Therefore he is the VICTIM of a gunshot wound!!! The police are alleging or in other words charging that he was burglarizing the house at the time. Once he is convicted it can be reported that he actually did it. Just like it cannot be said that the SOS guys committed any crimes nor can it be said that the Jefferson Tap guys did anything wrong. If and when they are convicted, then the "allegedly" goes away.
The only place that it ever says that somebody did something or that he is the offender is in a police report and even then the reports reads..."Victim stated to R/O that...." or "Victim related that"....This can also be phrased as..."Victim alleges..." or "It is alleged that..." or "Above subject was arrested in that..."
The media did not suggest for a second that the officer did anything wrong nor did they say that the person shot was innocent. They are simply reporting the facts as FACTS and nothing else. Maybe as a trained police officer, you should try doing that yourself sometime since that is what you are getting paid to do.
The courts are there to decide who the guilty party is not the media and not the police. THere are many other reasons to bitch about the media. They did not do anything wrong here, neither did the off duty officer and there is no reason to get all upset over it.

I already made the move and it's the best thing I ever did for myself, my career, my family and my finances.
I have yet to meet a cop in my new suburban department that has 1 side job let alone 2, and only a year on with the suburban dept I have bypassed my CPD salary and do not have a side job anymore. (Had 7 years on the job with CPD)
Most suburban departments will start you at a higher salary level since you are already coppers. Those of you with Military backgrounds same thing, ask them about it.

RE 008th district. As far as calling police on the west end and expecting a response. GOOD LUCK. I work in 008 and the fact is we are way short. I know everyone is, but its actually ridiculous. Just last night we had 7 coppers from 007 working every single 10 sector car. WHY? because everyone and their brother is trying to bid out of 008 but the fine higher ups refuse to post openings in 008 and even if they did its not 1990 anymore and 008 isnt the place to be. 811 is consatntly sent to 63rd western and artesian to handle jobs, leaving the working people that live in the 10 sector with NO POLICE PRESENCE. Anyone familiar with 008 would know that from archer/harlem to 63 western is a good 15-20 minute roll without traffic. i feel for the people of the west end, you truly are screwed. Time to start pressuring the city to give you your own district out there, its only going to get worse!

You have to be joking right? They were called back at 2200 hrs by ADS Risley because their Commander was complaining that TRU wasnt in the district fast enough after roll call. The rdo tact team finally rolled back into the station about 2330 and started unloading their stuff from the two 4-man cars. You should have seen them whine when they were told by the WC to go out in the DOC. They hit the doc about 0030 and were back in at 0130. It seems that their hours were adjusted to 1800-0230 for safe summer to allow "travel time" to area 5. (2 hours? everyone else starts at 2000 hrs AT Area 4)) Bottom line.....Thanks for the ONE hour of hard charging/crime fighting in your own district. If you don't give a shit about your own district going up for grabs why should TRU, SOS and the guy pushing the beat car care either? Then I hear the commander got on the phone and called directly to Dana complainaing about SOS and TRU, now they have to ansewr to the supe. Did the tact lt have to leave reports too? Of course not! just sos and tru.

Not sure what district you work in but it is not uncommon for more than 1 shots fired call to come out during a tour of duty. The shots fired call that was given a 19P was dispatched at approx. 2340 hrs at 7144 S. Richmond, “caller states he just heard 3-4 shots in the alley behind the residence”. The area was toured and the only person on the street at that time in that area was stopped, name checked and contact card was written.
When the call came in from the citizen that 2 people were found shot in a vehicle at 7039 S. Fairfield, at 0030hrs, which is almost 7 city blocks east of prior call, a canvas was conducted and 2 different citizens related that they heard 2-3 shots fired about 2200/2230 hrs but did not call 911 to report, a check with dispatch also showed that no calls of shots fired were reported at that time in that area. Another citizen interviewed said he had come home at 2300 hrs saw the car sitting there running but did not look to see who was in it and stated he did not hear any gunshots after that time he arrived home.
When responding units ( including CFD,AMB) arrived on scene rigor mortis had already started to set in on the bodies. Usually this starts to occur 2-3 hours after death.
The same car handled both calls and did write the paper.
The next time you feel you have to bash someone online and call someone a dog when you don’t know them or know all the facts I hope you take a minute to think before blogging.
I know SCC is a North side site, but I love it even being a Sox fan; U nort side cops have to visit gettoville on friday nite or sat/date nite to see how fucked up this city is...and by all means bring your WEAPON and BACKUP WITH YOU.....

TRU showed up and did their thing, and Risley showed up too, but there were no beefs from anybody in 003.
It was a crazy night, and a lot of us never got a chance to get a lunch in, but nobody complained, because we were just too busy to bitch about it. THOSE ARE THE FACTS!

I know that Officer Jim Klauba from the Academy physical skills staff teaches ground fighting and kick boxing that is geared toward officer survival. A lot of what he teaches is similar to Krav Maga and is designed to win a fight against multiple assailants, with no rules. He's very good at what he does and he teaches adults and kids out of a Church near Montrose and Cicero.

Berwyn is not the suburb that it was in years past. The city more resembles 010 now than anything. Most of the Czechs and Poles have moved on and there is a bad element in some parts of the town. Dog asses need not apply. There is nowhere to hide in this place, the calls are coming in like rapid fire. Why do you think Berwyn increased its PD by 12 officers in the past couple of years, and are looking to take more on? There are lots of shit heads and stuff happening every few minutes there. Everyone else was waist deep in shit, ask around, find out who got lunch that night, it wasn't many. if TRU has to answer as to where they were, i guess they'll just have to do that. Everybody who worked that night was doing what they could to hold the level II.
