Ex-squeeze Us? Baking Powder?

  • PHILADELPHIA - The city's embattled police chief, acknowledging that police alone cannot quell a run of deadly violence, has called on 10,000 black men to patrol the streets to reduce crime.

Sylvester Johnson, who is black, says black men have a duty to protect more vulnerable residents. He wants each volunteer to pledge to work three hours a day for at least 90 days.

"It's time for African-American men to stand up," Johnson told the Philadelphia Daily News, which first reported the story Wednesday. "We have an obligation to protect our women, our children and our elderly. We're going to put men on the street. We're going to train them in conflict resolution."

It's all well and good for the chief to say it's time for black men to stand up and take a more positive role in their neighborhoods - Bill Cosby has been saying it for years. But putting 10,000 untrained, unarmed, and uninterested volunteers on the street is doomed to failure and is putting lots of people at risk and municipalities in danger of liability.

And doesn't it seem like the chief is pretty much emasculating his entire department and admitting that he's lost the war on crime in Philadelphia? Maybe the National Guard could restore some order.

Note - comments will be heavily regulated for this post because things like this really seem to bring out the worst in people.

That reminds me of Claudell Irvin Commander of 011 who ten years ago advocated having People along with Police Officers stand on street corners & pray to make the Dope Man go away. He went out there himself even and was applauded for being so "innovative".

There's your Chicago Police version of emasculation years ahead of Philly...

Number one the chief isn't as stupid as he seems....10,000 black men patroling against crime? And just when is that going to happen? This is not a one day grandstanding ploy......he is asking for consistency.......everyday patrol.........What he seems to be saying is.........the police are just small players on the home front....time for the citizens to step up and take some resposiblity for their neighborhoods security and saftey..............think about it...isn't that what you would want citizens taking responsibility?

Now that Paul Vallas is no longer the school supe out there, maybe there are no qualified applicants. Our almost governor has moved to New Orleans to head up their school system.

Then again, will this happen more and more in cities with rampant crime? Maybe not from the poleece cheef but someone else in government?

I think the chief has his heart in the right place but, his mind is taking a reality break.

There is nothing wrong with asking the good people of a neighborhood to stand up to crime and put an end to it.

Could you imagine if all the residents who hide in their houses on the West Side actually cooperated with the police and told us where the dope was being hidden while shithead is dealing? Our jobs would be a hundred times easier.

The problem is simple. Philly is opening themselves to bigtime civil liability. The first time a citizen roughs up or even touches a shithead who decides to take a dive and go to the hospital. Joe citizen will say he did it because the police chief and mayor told me to do it. In this liberal infested society, the good people of philly will be opening the checkbook. A problem that may happen is a power stuggle between the organized citizens. Philly might have their own little militias who decide they don't answer to the regular blue and whites.

This is one of the dumbest ideas i've ever heard of anyone coming up with. With minds like this one on the leadership end of it's department, they were doomed to fail from the beginning.

I would actually pay you money to see the deleted comments on this one, cause while they're probably extremely un-politically correct, I'm gonna bet you about shit yourself with laughter while reading some of them!

Other than that, all I can say is: this will never work.

What a brilliant idea!

I agree with an earlier poster. Orange jumpsuits would make outstanding "uniforms" for these vigilantes.

>>But putting 10,000 untrained, unarmed, and uninterested volunteers on the street is doomed to failure and is putting lots of people at risk and municipalities in danger of liability.<<

I think we are in basic disagreement on this one SCC. We (you and I) probably both agree that the black community needs to address its problems. There are many beyond the non-involvement (e.g., "snitches get stitches") of witnesses and the community as the young run amok.

But this is perhaps a start to ask the community to start taking care of itself. If done properly, this could have net positive results.

I hope the chief is very careful to press the idea that conflict-resolution includes not making oneself part of any conflict. But the idea of asking 10000 black men in a wild city to step up and get involved to see what problems exist and then help address them seems like a good start.

Hopefully, after he asks 10000 to get involved in maintaining civil order, he will ask all those who remain.

Basically, this could be seen as asking the denizens of the city to act as members of a community, much like the members of our respective communities often do.

I wish them the best. I'm not optimistic, but this could be a positive call if done right. If the reverends in Philadelphia are anything like the reverends in Chicago, I'd tell them that they are the first volunteers.

Chicago is right behind them, any liberal democratic city is doomed. All the screaming about violence in Iraq. That place is peaceful compared to violence in America. Chicago violence alone speaks for itself.

SCC, I don't see a big problem here. Lots of white officers post here daily claiming that the black community doesn't want to do right.
The Chief of Philly is asking responsible black male adults (ROLE MODELS IF YOU WILL) to stand up and take repsonsibility for their communities. I don't see anything wrong with that at all.
I watched numerous WHITE CITIZENS attempt to do the same thing when they televised the Durkin Park community meeting. I even watched a short, dumpy looking Hispanic copper say on tv that he was "ashamed" to be a police officer after what occurred in that community. One can only hope the Chief of Police in Philly can find a large number of AA males willing to step up and guide the youths that are overtaxing the police service there. Maybe a similar program can be implemented here. There are lots of solid, middle class black families (and men) out there. They just need to band together and put some positive influence and hope into these kids who don't have any such guidance in their lives. It certainly can't hurt. based on the murder stats for the past 3 weekends in Chicago.

Bring back the mayor/police chief team of Philly from about 1985. Thats the team that dropped the bomb on those MOVE assholes. They took some heat(they leveled a block)but they got the job done.
My hats off to any Philly PD guy that fought in that battle..........
