Hampton Gets His Sign
- From now on, Oak Street in Maywood will be known as Fred Hampton Way.
Relatives of the slain Black Panther leader joined congressmen, activists and Maywood residents Saturday to dedicate the street and a statue of Hampton that now sits in front of the Fred Hampton Family Aquatic Center.
Last year, efforts to name a street on Chicago's West Side for Hampton failed amid controversy that Hampton and the Panthers advocated violence against police.
But there was no such debate in Maywood, whose mayor, Henderson Yarbrough, said the village council "unanimously, proudly" voted to give Hampton his due.
Honoring a convicted felon, admitted gang banger, gun runner and dope dealer.
What a proud day for Maywood.

There are at least over a dozen police officers killed nation wide by Black Panthers.

The communities that honor people such as Hampton are doomed for failure. They honor violence and shall reap violence. Why not honor people of non-violent methods? Maybe this would help change a communties obsession with violence as a way of life. 99.9% of this violence is perpetrated by members of their own communtity. The police have to go into a community that has very little value for human life, but yet we are the enemy. Always have been. Rizzato and Severin went into this community to help and were killed for their effort. Hundreds of others have done the same, but yet their sacrafice is not recognized by the community. There is no better enemy of your own then your own.
Try preaching education, human decency and accepting responsibility.

To mere mention that Hampton was assassinated is a joke. As far as the "second class citizens with little or no rights", lets see:

Last year, efforts to name a street on Chicago's West Side for Hampton failed amid controversy that Hampton and the Panthers advocated violence against police.
But there was no such debate in Maywood, whose mayor, Henderson Yarbrough, said the village council "unanimously, proudly" voted to give Hampton his due.
"There ought to be some footprints in the sand in relation to this man," said the Rev. Al Sampson, one of about 75 people at the ceremony. "Fred Hampton represents part of the tradition of liberation freedom fighters."
Killed in police raid in '69
Maywood's police chief attended the event, along with U.S. Representatives Danny Davis and Bobby Rush, a co-founder of the Illinois Black Panther Party.
Hampton, who grew up in Maywood, and fellow Panther Mark Clark were gunned down by Chicago Police in a 1969 raid at Hampton's apartment. Hampton had helped bring the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to national prominence and also brokered a nonaggression pact between gangs.
Because Hampton wanted to be a lawyer, a scholarship fund for black law students now bears his name, and several scholarship awards were given at Saturday's dedication.
Hampton's brother Bill Hampton said the statue and the street are an appropriate tribute to a man who fought for "justice, freedom and equality for all people."
Asked what she thought about the street, Hampton's mother, Iberia Hampton, said: "I love it."

In 1969, before the Monroe St. raid, at least ELEVEN members of the CPD were shot by members of the Black Panther Party:
Terry KNOX, 005 was shot in 005.
Dan SAMPILA and Ken GORLES, 011 were shot in 011.
Eight police officers sustained GSW near 58th St. & South Park, Patrolmen Frank RAPPAPORT and John GILHOOLY expired from their injuries.
Knox, Sampila, Gorles and the others survived.

As one who was around then, the only reason Hanrahan and his boys got introuble was this. Hanrahan would not keep his mouth shut and kept going on TV. Old man Daley told him to clam up and stop the media frenzy. Those guys did nothing wrong. They were never prosecuted, never went to jail, and never fired. The only ones who lost were the tax payers when the suit was lost or settled.
