Jesse's Solution?
- Dismayed by the number of truants he encountered during a recent back-to-school, door-knocking campaign on Chicago's South Side, Rev. Jesse Jackson on Thursday called for state funding to place truancy officers at every Chicago public school.
"We need money for truancy officers so that door-knocking is year-round, not episodic," said Jackson, whose Rainbow/PUSH Coalition has planned a rally Monday at Marshall Metropolitan High School, 3250 W. Adams St. "We'll be turning up the heat on this issue."
Until 1991, Chicago Public Schools had truancy officers in schools. The officers were trained to investigate problems that interfere with a child's school attendance, accompany delinquent students to court and to provide food, clothing and transportation fare when necessary. They also had the legal authority to take children to school or families to court.
But the Chicago school board eliminated the jobs in 1992 to save $4 million a year.
We used to have truant officers in our neighborhoods back in the day - they were called "parents." Involved parents. But of course, the cult of victimhood espoused by Jesse and his ilk demands that the government take responsibility for everything in life. And of course, Jesse insists it be paid for by everyone else.
Maybe a hard look at the bloated bureaucracy and waste within the CPS could find the $4 million Jesse wants for truant officers. We've outlined a story or two about closets full of unused books, rooms full of unopened computers and horded supplies that never ever get to classrooms chronically short of the basics.
We'd bet a weeks worth of competent investigative reporting would recover tens of millions of dollars. But of course, the local media is in hock to the Daley machine, who in turn owes the reverends and the unions. And taxpayers once again, get the shaft.

The good ol reverends will never address the real issue of parental accountability.
Why don't they just start youth camps and have the children live there,you know like in their utopian Marxist dreams.

I have solved this problem with the schools and the hole in daley's budget. put casinos in every school in certain areas. And the only way to get a pass to go into the casino is if you bring all your kids with you. Hell if you bring your neighbors kids you get extra chips. schools could be open 24-7 and we would always know where the children are!!!!!
It would be great if rainbow/push employees acted as truant officers.. they get out the people to vote ..why dont they get the people out to school.
Maybe babydaddy jackson hisownself might get off his fat ass and knock on doors to get the chillins to go to school.

Yes, taxpayers get the shaft, as always. It's an equal opportunity problem, though, and it's disingenuous of SCC to present it solely as a Democrat problem.

I'm just amazed by the fact that this blog has had nothing bad to say about the way this administration has handled the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
There's billions of dollars being spent over there, ostensibly to protect us from terrorism over here. Yet no one is willing to define any metrics to measure progress or lack thereof.
I agree that there's a good amount of money being wasted across the board, but I think it's important to keep an eye on everyone, not just those that we might disagree with politically.
Lets build more schools that is daleys solution! more money thrown away, fuck them if they don't go to school close the schools down who gives a shit! Save us $$$$ Stop link and bullshit free medical, ship the illegals out NOW! Would save billions!

The schools already call the parents, when the the kids do not show up. And the they don't give a shit, what good is it going to do to send someone to the house.

i'm still all for the p test to get public aid....if you can't pass that simple test you ain't worth helping out....as for the truancy in schools now a days, maybe the old fashioned if you don't get your butt to school and on time your gonna get whooped with the belt should be reinforced. instead of making parents scared to discipline their kids, start up a budget to help each family get a nice leather belt that can hang in plain view and give them the permission to use it !

Only because due to government crackdowns it is harder to get, now there are just kids walking around out there hungry, dirty who nobody cares about. You know the ones the Crack Babies Crack Babies. I have an idea just throw more money at the problem. Fuck accountability, I am sorry for all the years of oppression it is OK if your kids do not go to school (That was sarcasm).
