- Next Tuesday marks the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington D.C. On Wednesday, authorities responsible for security here in Chicago say they are prepared to respond to any emergency, including a possible terrorist attack.
- Most of what city officials put on display Wednesday had ben [sic] seen before on the streets serving the public already. But six days before the 9-11 anniversary, it was a good day to round up and show off the city's high-tech public safety equipment.
- Police cars equipped with automatic license plate recognition cameras
- the city SWAT team's armored humvee
- the now-operational mobile command vehicle that officials could roll anywhere in the city to direct an emergency response.
- "We can extend our networks here to any satellite locations," said Tony Ruiz, OEMC director.
Nothing like rolling out the same old stuff that everyone has seen before. Questions though:
- How automatic license plate recognition cameras are going to do anything to prevent an attack?
- How an armored humvee is going to be of any use in a wide spread urban catastrophe situation - there's only one of them?
- Wasn't there a big problem with the satellite link up truck not being able to actually "link up" with satellites? Wasn't that why that truck was parked at OEMC for months? Because the City hadn't paid for upgrades and actually ended up shipping the truck back to Florida after last year's photo ops?

Hmmm SCC, Just wondering if you can answer this question. The battery for my radio usually only lasts between 7-8 hrs. What do i do if there is an emergency in my 7th or 8th hr of work? How do i communicate with OEC with a dead radio? It seems like a simple solution that the City would have figured out since 09/01/2001. I'm sure they have an answer with all of the TARA training they have wasted from the Federal Gov.

If god forbid a nuclear devise or a few planes hit buildings in downtown ChicaGO, WE WOULD ALL BE SCREWED!

You are correct! Joe Morrado is a good policeman, and a gentleman. He does point out good police work when he sees it. Refuses to take the White shirt vs. Blue shirt mentality

The camera's that are entrusted to keep us safer are essentially USELESS,except in their capacity to generate revenue.
The most frightening fact though is that we have fewer than 8,000 bodies.New York is above 30,000!

The dist's manpower is stretched so dangerously thin that on a good day things are just hectic.
We must reallocate bodies to where they are needed most,the strain and stress on the everyday individual,is going to cause people who bend but not break ,to start snapping soon.
In dists that are predominately of color even the most patient officer is going to be needlessly subjected to an exorbitant amount of mayhem.Eventually a rational individual could make a bad decision that could start a race riot or start overlooking necessary enforcements.
When you crunch the numbers and break down the 8,000,you realize how vulnerable we really are.We are a city of 2-3 million people being policed by about 3,500 workers,which if we were a daycare centet would cause us to be closed down for improper staffing.

I had the pleasure of running into Joe on a job or two, he is indeed a great guy and a good inspector. Way to go Joe!
I know this sounds crazy but I'd like to see the Dept hire MORE INSPECTORS.
Why might you ask,well I'll tell you.We obviously have something wrong when a handful of hard workers are being run in circles,and you still have the same habitual useless dogs blowing everything off.
I know you say it is the duty of the SGT'S to address this,but when these,for example, are bosses kids pulling this crap nobody wants to draw the wrath of a big boss.
I have done this now for 23 yrs and it has gone on for ever.The problem now is that it is an officer safety issue, because boys and girls we are at an almost all time low for manpower and it stands out and those people should be called on the carpet.
The type of Inspector I'm talking about is Inspector Morrado.This is possiibly the finest,FAIREST,and helpful individual on the Dept.He is a leader in a Dept of followers and leads by example.He still is not afraid to do police work,unlike a lot of inspectors he doesn't just sandbag without recourse.
If you work you should have absolutely no fear of the Inspectors(WITH EXCEPTION OF NOTORIOUS BIG BIRD)who has filled more sandbags than residents living next to THE DES PLAINES RIVER.

I love Australia and its people. I have made several extended trips "Down Under". Even the South of France and Tuscany can't compare.

An American citizen may remain in Australia for up to six months. I unsuccessfully applied for dual citizenship. The immigration laws of the Commonwealth are strict, even Draconian. The Aussies won't put up with any of the bullshit that tax-paying Americans must endure.
At the risk of sounding less than patriotic, in my "next life", I'll take OZ--hands down.
After the long flight to Sydney or Melbourne via LAX or SFO, you just may not want to come back. "No worries, mate!"

no, its not. He is grandfathered in. by your logic, every copper without college would be fired. Also, he is EXEPMT rank, he "serves at the pleasure of..", meaning that he is, well, exempt from shakman or any other structure regarding promotion.
Please help me understand this, i work in 016th dist 3rd watch..we were in a rap last nite and they were giving jobs to the sgt..i know they are the police and should help out and earn there pay also..but the reason we were in a rap at this time was because we had 3-cars on jobs with the cfd amubalance where there was no reason for us cpd to go to or be at that job at all...will someone please tell the city i am a fu*king cop not a fireman and im not a lawyer where i have to chase the ambulance and stand around 30-min...thanks i fell better now...

This morning I came down Congress and committed a minor traffic violation. I got stopped by a CPD Traffic unit. Boy was I lucky! When the P.O. asked for my license, for officer safety reasons, I indicated that I was armed and that I was a law enforcement officer. I also told her that I was on the CPD until 1990. At this point I showed her my FED creds. She wasn't super friendly but in the end the copper was courteous and she merely gave me a warning. I LOVE THIS CITY! I AM GLAD PROFESSIONAL COURTESY STILL EXISTS.

Little true story about an incident that occurred last year. I was working days, Just as I was entering the station a visiting WC stopped me at the door. (the WC knew me as I worked for him when he was a SGT) The WC said George I need some help get on your uniform and go over to the CTA subway, I got guys from Midnights waiting for Fire, The officers were checking out a call of suspicious white powder. When I arrived I found two officers (with a year and a day on the job)who told me they had stopped all train traffic and shut down the subway. I then ask the officers where was the powder they said down on the tracks and platform I then started down the stairs and at that time the officers said "oh don't go down" I continued down the stairs and found white soap powder mixed with bleach spilled on the platform. As I walked back up to the street I saw Vehicles from all over the city responding to soap powder I got on the radio to disregard. Can you say white shirts? The city of Chicago is in serious trouble. I'm leaving in 2008 to bad so sad.

Just like to address a subject from a couple days ago
The subject was a Sgt in 16 (F.V.),who while a P.O.IN 024 had a chase that went bad.She had a serious lack of judgement on that day and was disciplined accordingly.
The childish banter as of late centers around cheap shots from the 62 team in 024,and audie.The 62 team if you don't know is comprised of incompetant sons of bosses who spend the tour reliving the past evening at the "Isle" or talking about going to the "Isle" that evening and acting like 8 yr olds.
This group of officers is symbolic of what is wrong with the C.P.D., the Sgt entrusted with them is saddled with son's of Capt's & Lt's and their arrogant attitude of entitlement speaks volumes about why their arrests need to handed off to them.
It used to be tac teams did search warrants,street stops and surveillances.Granted these guys do always have the newest Cubs hats ,(worn backwards of course) and clothing which enables them to covertly blend in with the environment,but Northwest Highway is not crime ridden or in 024.
Sometimes when you see these attitudes,lack of ability and common sense its easy to see why common people dislike us and real bad guys can get away with murder.

I work at OEMC We are all screwed when the #@$% hits the fan. Millions and Millions and Millions of homeland security dollars wasted to god knows where. It hasnt been spent on operations for dispatch/calltakers, training, personnel or equipment. As far as anyone knows neither CPD or CFD got much for it either. Just protect your own cuz NOONE is going to come in and save us

Please don't hold CFD accountable for all the requests for assistance you get. CFD requires us in the office (OEMC) to request cpd for most every call that has the slightest possibility to place the department personnel in harms way. In the office we try to hold cpd on as many runs as we can. Keep up the good work all and be safe.

If you can't find a marked Hummer sitting outside the police facility, what hope is there that you could complete a SWAT task successfully??

My car is custom 200+ miles, floor inside rusted, nice little airholes and when it rains automatic foot wash (take off your shoes), Nice option, the windows don't close they are tilted kind of at an angle, again another cpd feature when it rains you get a free hair wash (Bring your shampoo), and we have a great computer that works sometimes, then fades out. Another bonus in order to keep daleys friendly vendors happy 3 different tire companies on the same vehicle talk about diversity! Then the nice seats with broken springs another bonus! give more money to the broken school system mayor and please buy yourself and your detail new cars every 6 months as you have done since you stole the origianl election! your the greatest!

There is no educational requirement for any "exempt" personnel, they can be appointed from any rank including civilians. If Daley wants to, he can put all his cronies/family in as Supe, Chief, Dep.Supt. Commanders. Anything over the Captains Rank.
The Captains do need a college degree to get made now, and the first set had 6 years to obtain one. The requirement is in the union contract between captains and the city. the city didn't necessarily want that in, but it is...
So, it isn't that Starks is grandfathered in, he made his career service rank of LT before the educational requirement was set for that rank, so he was already a LT, and the present educational requirement did not require LT's who were already in the rank to obtain it... it isn't in the union contract, it is just what the city wanted, a rule the city came up with for whatever reason.
