Hmmmmm

We're going to guess "suspicious in origin" isn't a stretch here:
  • The mall was shut down in 2005 after city inspectors found 112 building, health and safety code violations there. It re-opened last November with most of those violations addressed, area activists said.

"I've spent a lot of money on these buildings over the past two years," said Park, while surveying the damage Saturday.

"I must have spent $500,000 on this building alone," he said, pointing to the collapsed roof near the mall's rear entrance.
In what is arguably the hottest real estate section of the city. That might not be saying much in the current housing market, but these things run in cycles.

The City Inspectors should shut down half of the stations in the city. Lots of code violations. Put those cops in tents in their parking lots.

Some one was trying to turn the mega mall into condos (bec there are not enough of condos in Chicago). Some group was able to stop the developer. It sat there for a year or more while they fought it out. Now that the housing market is shot, just burn it down.

Reminds me of the Korean restaurant fire when Pat Tuite got the confessions thrown out and the koreans immediately fled the county.

This after a Chicago Firefighter lost his hand in the explosion.

1984 all over again

Most city owned buildings have enough building code violations to warrant their closing. The only way the city will close any of their facilities is under order from either the state or OSHA. Even then they will appeal to keep them open.
