Nice Learning Environment
- Forty-seven students were arrested after a fight broke out at a West Side high school this morning, authorities said.
The fight started about 10 a.m. on the third floor of Crane High School, in the 2200 block of West Jackson Boulevard. The initial call to police reported a battery in progress, they said.
Police this evening continued to process those who were arrested, said Chicago Police Officer Tom Polick. Authorities said they were charged with mob action and reckless conduct. No weapons were used.
We regularly get letters about fights this size (and bigger) going off all around the finer schools of our fair city. What is amusing to us is that even though cops know about every one of these fights and so do the neighborhoods, there's never a camera anywhere nearby. Ever. It's not like these huge disturbances are a big secret or anything. Operation Closed Market was regularly redeployed to high school dismissals every single day and a few people down in Springfield actually got $20 million of our tax money redirected to fund coppers working overtime for "Safe Passage" at certain schools in certain congressional districts (guess which ones!)
Perhaps if the taxpayers being fleeced by the politicians actually saw what was going on in these "schools" on a regular basis, that recall option being pushed by the Tribune might get some steam behind it and we'd get some real stabs at reform.

Fights at Crane HS = Nothing NEW!!!! This happens at LEAST once a week. Dismissals are crazy, using all the resources in the district to "baby-sit" these "honor students". What a joke!!!!! Take a look at the units in 012 on any given weekday at dismissal time.... especially after there's been a big fight. 1200 will have at least 1/2 the district there, and any available gang/tact cars. Given that the fight with mass arrests- 45 or so, just happened on Friday: Just wait til Monday!! I bet he'll call the helicopter out again also. He calls it out for EVERYTHING!! Even BEFORE a unit gets onscene for a job and determines if the incident is even bona fide!!!
Also- these 2600-units that do these school premise checks, and ask for their "Safe Passage" event numbers at Crane HS, (and ANY Chicago HS for that matter)...it's all a waste of resources. What is one 10-4 2600unit going to do when there's a huge fight in the school and like today resulted in 45 arrests. Granted this is not an every day occurance, but that one 10-4 unit did NOT make a huge impact by being there.
Something needs to be done about these Chicago Public High Schools.... They are a DISGRACE!!! These kids dont act civilized!
As for the cameras, they DON'T prevent crime. The people who think they do are fooling themselves. All they do, is RECORD crimes that happen. Criminals don't care. But Hey, let's put some cameras in every public HS, and then when something does happen, play that tape on the news so that all the reverends and such can go on and on, about what troubled youth we have in this city. Please be careful when detailed around these schools...these animals have nothing to lose and as much as they hate each other...they hate us more. I love seeing that they locked these MF's up...finally! I think there should be a zero tolerance policy used with these schools...inside the property and out. They step off the sidewalk or throw up gang signs...your butt gets locked up, period. Again be safe out there.

Years ago, I was present at Crane HS during a fight in the lunch room. Fucking animals! Total disregard for authority and even swung at numerous teachers, security and police.
I remember the Principal and his crew used to walk around with bats and giant paddles just to show sign that they will have order, or to restore order.
I believe that Principal is long gone. Not sure.
Cant blame the teachers, security or police.

Closed Market Operation [OCM] is back and so called new and improved and ramping up in December, if not sooner!
Those Officers eligible for Closed Market Operation had to pick watch bid style.
The Officer had to pick which day of the week you most preferred to work all the way done to the least desirable day, which in this case would be Friday.

It's the same B.S. at Roberto Clemente H.S. in Humboldt Park (western & division) half the beatcars from 013 and 014th districts are detailed to see that all the westside African-american students who are bussed-in get on the CTA busses and get out before riots occure.
Maybe 3 years ago when Austin H.S. closed they were sent elsewhere (many to Clemente H.S.) problems sky rocketed.
A P.O. was shot last year Artesian/Division in Broad daylight at dismissal time, dozens of policeofficers and hundreds of citizens were on the street and witnessed it.
Sad. I remember when school was for learning and preparing one for the future.NOW it's just a ghetto fashion show, and gang recruitment opportunity!

There are plenty of public high schools that you don't hear about massive fights....what about those schools??? How dare you stereotype. And on another note to the poster questioning why a child wasn't sent to Mt Carmel, my son is a senior there, and we have dealt with some real racial issues while attending that school. I also have another son that attends a public high school that is ranked well, and there has not been a MASSIVE fight since he began attending there 2 years ago. NOW WHAT??

We need more libraries and parks with flowers so kids can learn more and feel good about themselves. We need to increase federal funding and taxes so that more $$$$ can be spent on less fortunate kids-need to match on what the suburbs spend per kid. We need to change the way tests are given so our less fortunate kids can get a better score. There is so much more we can do to alleviate the conditions that contribute to these types of events. I know this will work because Daley and the social liberals told me so.

I am a CPS teacher and just want to say that we are plagued with many of the same problems as the police...people with political clout holding positions they aren't qualified to be in. How about an actual educator being in charge of the schools? The problem isn't the kids or the teachers, it's poor parenting, mismanagement, clout, and nepotism. The city that works, right?
Starting back up the School Patrol Unit will do no good. The schools and their perimeters are more protected now. Back then, they had two officers per school which is the same now and two to three cars per Area for transports. Back then they got NO district support and the districts didn't know how bad the schools were. Now, that the districts know how bad the problem is, and people act like the cure all is the school patrol unit. Its exactly the same but the districts now have to deal with a problem that was invincible in the past. In fact, the schools are getting more attention than ever because the districts will now put 2-3 cars at school dismissals which was unheard of back in the day of the school patrol.

The problem is that there is no discipline at home and schools can do very little to discipline 'cause momma comes to the rescue saying "my baby don't to this and my baby don't do that" the revs get involved and no one gets their asses kicked out of these schools. I feel sorry for the kids who want to learn. Pathetic.
Rules should be clear: no talking back to teachers, no fighting, no class disruptions, no drugs, no acting like a gangbanger...you do you're out. Let the teachers teach the kids who really want to learn and get rid of teachers who can't spell, write, talk properly, know basic math, etc...'cause they're part of the problem, too.

11/17/2007 3:39 pm...ok name 1 school out of the chicago public school area which has had massive fights where dozens of police had to be called on a daily basis? i think a huge problem is that people think that throwing money at the problem will solve anything but lets take a look at some hard facts. a lot of these young men and women come from single parent homes and lets be honest a lot of these "parents" do not want to be involved in their childs life so they dump the child at the school and expect the system to do the parenting job that they should be doing. a lot of these young men at these public schools have fathers who are more sperm donors then actual fathers so these kids do not have an actual example on how to conduct themselves as a young man so this is the way they go out and conduct themselves. another point is that alot a members of the black community have developed an acceptance of behavior which is wrong. they think being pregnant at 16 is ok. they think producing multiple kids without caring for them is ok. and most important is they think that hitting someone when they are mad is perfectly acceptable. maybe instead of thinking throwing more money at the problem will solve it,maybe these so called parents should show some personal adult responsibilty and raise your kids properly.
