The Public We Serve

The Tribune has an article up on the Christmas Eve DUI accident that has left an off duty Chicago cop in bad shape. Very bad shape. We hope he recovers, but that isn't the story we're covering. The Trib also has open comments on the article. A sampling:
  • Todd from Chicago - another cop who thinks the laws dont apply to CPD officers. way to go and lead by example
  • Chicago Voter from Hillside - another drunk cop above the law and this will be covered up by his scum friends in the police dept. as they protect gang daly
  • Marie from Northbrook - Noone should be defending this scumball, HE could of killed someone and thankfully he's the only one seriously injured.
  • Marie again - Go feed your fat cop husband some more bagels and quit defending drunk driving **** pigs, unless maybe, just maybe, your fat cop husband is one of those drunk driving pigs and that's why you're so adamantly defending this lowlife.
  • Pete from Chicago - You need to protect your police force. They work hard. If the guy was drinking...so what, if he was doing a little cocaine...so what, if he had a 9 year old kidnapped child in the back... so what. These guys risk their lives for you. As far as i'm concerned, they are above the law.
  • Marie yet again - Quit defending this disgusting pig! Rot in jail piggy!
  • Todd from Chicago - It's pathetic that cops and their battered wifes defend pukes like this guy and the drunk cop that killed those two men in lakeview a month or so ago, rather than be ashamed of these lowlifes for tarnishing the badge they hide behind.
Our adoring public. Granted, there are a bunch of suburban haters listed here and we do have our defenders popping up in the comment section of the article. But the complete willingness of the public to suspend any and all semblance of innocence whenever CPD is involved in anything is disheartening.

Is this a surprise? The majority of the public hates us, everyone with more than a few months on the job knows that.

It just shows that they really don't deserve any police service. The only thing I do is write suburban people traffic violations once in a while otherwise I don't do anything and I recommend you all to get on the same page and do the same!

I pray for him that he recovers. I know he's in bad shape. Also, I'm afraid his B.A.C. was above the legal limit.

If anyone should have known better, it's an investigator from Major Accidents.

Hopefully, he'll pull through and learn from his mistakes. And I really hope that everyone else, police or non police, learns from him what NOT to do.

Happy Holidays (sober if behind the wheel please)

Hey SCC take a look at the Chicago Tribune Website "video" and search under Sam Zell, new CEO of Tribune Companies. There's a particular unedited video interview with Sam and Chicago Tribune reporters that is very interesting to hear and may effect how our local media operates if he is successful.

My son, a CPD Officer was killed by a drunk driver while he was on patrol. An illegal alien killed him and I didn't see the community nor the Chicago newspapers in an uproar over it. We haven't learned anything from this as the illegals still pour in and are protected, even by a City with a Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.

Most of us do a great job and are basically well intentioned good people

However drunk driving is very dangerous whther youre a police officer or not

I hope this officer recovers from his injuries

Im glad no one else was hurt, whther he was DUI or not

If he is convicted of DUI then I have no pity foe him and he should suffer the consequences.

Its stuff like this and the other stuff that gives us a bad name and gets people angry, sort of justifiably so

Merry Christmas

Forget about the disparities we suffer involving the so called, public. What about the injustices we suffer on CPD as a result of "our own." I again must mention, Bernard Kelly (CPD, 002 District). The man is lawfully and justifiably stopped and makes it a race issue. He goes beyond the CR # process. He goes on Fox news and does an interview on AM 1690( bashing and hating on his own Department). This racial profiling bullshit is a joke. It is a bigger joke than the career of the infamous Bernard Kelly himself.I wish Bernard could be white for one day. So he could feel the injustices that quotas, racial profiling, and black hate put on us each day on this job.

The CPD has a long history of, to put it politely, mendacity when it comes to public statements regarding misbehavior by police officers.

Actions have consequences. Not telling the truth has the consequence of you not being believed.

BTW - If you look at the comments section on the "roundtable" article, you'll see some rather fascinating statements by people purporting to "support" the police. Sounds more like a Klan rally. Anybody dumb enough to think that doesn't have an effect on the public who reads it?

We all know that "dude" in the hood does not like us but on every block in the hood there might be that one to two houses of people who actually respect us, who need us, and who like us.

Shit like this, PREVENTABLE shit, that the copper did to and by HIMSELF, well IMO, he discredits all of us, and he turns these one to two houses of good people in the hood agaisnt us too.

Nice job fuck up! Christ, you even worked in MAI - with the little pricks that love to write coppers ( remebr the DUI on the SGT from last year by SA??) - and then you go out and fuck up.

Shooting at 51st and king around 0430 hrs. Around 0630hrs another shooting, this time at 51st and Calumet (one block away). The officers were still processing the crime scene at 51/King and heard the shots. Same offenders. Also, while offenders trying to get away, fleeing on Indiana shot up some ladies car because she wouldn't get out the way.

The "reasonable suspicion or PC" is the fact he wasn't wearing a seatbelt at a seatbelt checkpoint.

And what would you have the officers do while they look in his car? Have him looming behind them free to do anything?

5 injured in cop car collision

December 26, 2007
FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS

A car reportedly ran a red light and struck a police squad car, injuring five people including two police officers on Wednesday morning in a South Loop intersection, police said.

An EMS Plan I was initiated at 4:43 a.m. for the traffic crash at State Street and Roosevelt Road, according to a fire department dispatcher.

A black Hyundai Sonata ran a red light at the intersection of West Roosevelt Road and South State Street and struck a marked police squad car, according to the police Major Accident Investigation Unit. The squad car jumped the curb and ended up at the window of a dry cleaning business.

The driver’s side of the squad car cracked the dry cleaner’s window of Grant Park Cleaners, East Roosevelt Road, but did not smash through it. The driver’s side rear door of the police car fell off and the front driver’s door is severely damaged.

Two male police officers were hurt, including the driver of the squad car, who was trapped in the car, according to Central District Police Capt. Joe Boisso. A passenger in the squad car, who was in the back seat, was also hurt. All three in the police car were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Boisso said.

“They were all kind of banged up and in a lot of pain,’’ Boisso said.

A man driving the Sonata and a female passenger were both taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. The woman was able to walk after the crash. Their conditions were unknown, Boisso said.

The airbags on the Sonanta did deploy, but it was unknown whether the ones in the police car did.

MAIU is investigating.

Officer yelled at him, pulled him out of the car and forced him to stand hands on the hood while they tossed the car without reasonable suspicion or PC. Needless to say nothing was found, he was issued tickets and sent on his way.

My friend told me that he had previously believed the media was bias against CPD and was not reporting accurately. He now however has serious doubts about the qualifications of most officers and is very skeptical of them.

This is a perfect example of why the public hates us. It is up to us to keep jagoff cops like above in check. My friend did mention that a second officer on scene was respectful and seemed "nice" but what stuck out in my friend's mind was that the second officer just let the first act like a total jagoff for no reason.

You are not a cop.

One, the seatbelt check point is the PC.

Your friend sounds as a liberal, who can't handle the 5 min it took to write a ticket. He wasn't a target. Too bad he wasn't getting a foot massage while his car was pulled over, maybe cops act like jagoffs as a tactic for the control of the situation, as your buddy rolled his eyes and acted smug and passive aggressive.

Tell your friend to man up. Is he in jail, did they beat him, Sorry the police bothered him for 5 mins, and his ego couldn't handle the fact his can't fight or defend himself without the police anyway.

the real problem between the public and the police is that there is no problem. the real problem started when they handed out mover books and told you to start writing. most people have no contact with the police except getting stopped for traffic violation. most people know how to handle their problems and never call the police. it's the 1 percent who call all the time who are the problem. next time give joe six pack a play and hammer the asshole bangers and dope dealers. show some compassion to the working folk-- most real officers i know do.

Marie from Northbrook has had life easy I bet. I'm sure it is a man that provides for her.

If the CPD is covering up for the copper, then how is it the public knows about it?

To the younger P.O's on the job, let the publics' scorn roll off your sleeve. Over all, the public supports us. The ones that don't never will.

Remember, we as a group can survive in environments most people never experience, or even know exist. To bash the police makes them feel powerful in other wise non fulfilling lives.

As a wise old timer once told me,
let the subject of your traffic stop or field interview dictate the encounter. The jags, always talk themselves into trouble.

Remember, if you drink take a cab.

Stay Safe!!

How many more lives need to be lost, how many more people have to be seriously injured and or permenantly disabled, how many more careers have to be destroyed and how many more families both CPD and non CPD have to be devestated before we get the message.
DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE! And if you do, don't expect this long time police officer to feel sorry for you. If this guy was a Steve Scholl protege, as one of the previous comments hints, that speaks volumes.

I have read other police related stories in the news and it seems the comments are always ugly. It's always a bunch of "haters" or budding "future" anarchists spewing their hate and vitriolic comments.

I'm sure if there was a news story on accountants, hedge fund managers, or business types with accompanying comments section, they'd all be like, "whaa, whaa, why is everyone bashing us, its not fair"

But they (middle class) always seem to think we (law enforcement) are fair game.

But they'd be the first to defend a colleague of their's by asking people to keep things civil,or not to paint everyone with a broad brush, etc.

Here's a little something to do. When you see joe suburbanite buy his dope in 11,15, 10, 7,etc, wait for the buy, then lock him up. Of course the dealer is gone when you get back.

Oh yea, don't forget to impound the car.

Also, not that anyone would, call the local newspaper of then offender. Just give them a RD# and district of arrest. They will do the leg work.

I reply to asshole. "Because, we back eachother up out here."

Asshole's retort, "Yeah, well when the gangs out here do it, it's no different. They all back eachother up and you fuck with dem an den you lock em up."

I can't wait to retire.

Congrats MAIS-officer, you've made the grade! You've now accumulated enough DUI points to qualify for a supervisory position on the Division Street "Entertainment" Detail.

Plenty of bar-hoppin', booze-guzzlin' CPD are shaking in their collective boots, hoping continued off-duty drunken mayhem won't require ALL CPD to submit to breath-alcohol testing at the start AND end of each tour.

Merry X-mas, Happy New Year, keep up the good work and get well! Pat and I look forward to working with you soon!

I am praying for this officer and his family. They not only have to work and wonder if he will ever recover, but he is being prosecuted in the Newspapers and on SCC. Now, let us all who are reading this think back to rather it was our younger years or last week when we had just a little bit too much to drink and safely made it home. I am not saying by any means it is ok to drink and drive, but after the Christmas Party, the old Watch Party, etc., we have all had a few at one point and time. He made a mistake, thank goodness it was only him that was hurt in the process, but don't act like you have not been there!

People who are called "Police" are entrusted with the public safety. Those of you, who have chosen this as your profession must start to realize that the public expectations of your actions on and off duty is gauged on a much higher level, the day that you raised your right hand and swore, the day you don that blue uniform on, the day you received your first city check, should have been the day that you realize that life as you once knew it no longer exsist. If you aren't prepared for those changes and expectations, its possible that you have chosen the wrong field of employment. All the boo hooing, finger pointing, and crying isn't going to change one single thing. Not one of you were press into service or drafted against your will, this will never be a job that will definite any of your personal agendas, I believe in this particular incident, it was the CPD Monique Bond who so eloquently informed the press as to the officer in question sobriety. I guess so much for due process if your own department representative hangs you out to dry. It doesn't help any, especially when this officer's assignment is with a unit who constantly investigate the end results of others who find themselves involved with driving and drinking. It's most fortunate that this officer isn't facing life threatening injuries and no one else was hurt. Now he can spend tons of money fighting to keep his job

Get your facts straight, the copper that DUI'ed the Sgt coming home from an X'mas party is from the Traffic Unit, which is Unit #151. MAIU is Unit 608.

With 15 years on the job I expected more, but it just goes to show you what you know. You sound like an ASS! Actually you sound like a P.P.O.

YOU RECOVER AN AUTO JUST TOW IT YOUR WAISTING THE DISPATCHERS TIME CALLING THE VICTIMS.

ALL THOSE POOR DOMESTICATED PEOPLE OUT THERE DONT BE IN SUCH A HURRY TO LOCK UP THEIR LOVED ONE GIVE THE OFF. A CHANCE TO WALK OUT OF THE HOUSE AND COOL OFF BEFORE YOU QUESTION ANYONE.

IF YOUR RIGHTING UP AN ACCIDENT REPORT BLAME BOTH DRIVERS THIS WILL LEAD TO A NICE LONG DRAWN OUT CIVIL SUIT. IF THEY HAVE INSURANCE!

My prayers are with the injured officer, who was the only one seriously hurt in the crash. I hope he recovers, and hope he can salvage his career from this mistake.

Sure, it's bad for anyone to drive drunk. But, you're right, this story would have received no coverage if it hadn't been a police officer. I bet your substance abuse numbers aren't any higher than any other high-stress profession. But you all get the grief for this.

That's a measure of how bad your image has dropped in the public mind. And that's not a good thing for anyone -- everyone gets hurt when people disrespect the police, whether or not the police have done anything to deserve the disrespect.

People who wish the injured officer ill are sick. People from the suburbs who mouth off about the way we do things in the city get on my nerves. If you want to gripe, live here -- otherwise, shut up, because we're not intersted in your opinion.

If the image problem wasn't already there, this officer's mistake would not have been any big deal. He shouldn't be dissed for bad timing.

It's a shame for him, and for the department.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you on the loss of your son. Another needless, avoidable death involving alcohol. Last week in rool call there was the video in which former officer Kasper talks about his case. From prison. Where he will spend the next 7-10 years. It's just not worth it. Please think first.

On a sort of related note. The guy who directed the movie
"A Christmas Story" (Ralphie and the BB gun) was recently killed by a drunk driver. Also an illegal alien. That let em stay policy is really working out well isn't it?

I was at Christmas mass and the priest asked for a prayer for the officer involved in the accident. I hope he fully recovers and no one else was hurt. Remember the folks who live out in the suburban area tend to like CPD because they know what we deal with(shit) and it does not include them and what suburbanites do. We don't write DUI's or traffic tickets. We don't bother them at their dinners, plays or Cubs games. We let them come visit and go back home. They are more worried about their police department then CPD. Just worry about yourself, your family and the job you are preforming and the rest will take care of itself, Good or bad.

In explanation for the suburban attitude about the police. I lived in the Burbs until I got on CPD. The cops in the burbs are some real chickenshit ticket writers. I've been to training classes with suburban cops since I became the police and the ticket quotas they claim they must satisfy are unreal; 8-10 hazardous movers per man per shift, in towns with perhaps 50 thousand citizens. The likelihood of a decent person getting the shaft is very high. My dad, Korean war vet, never even a parking ticket etc, got a mover for snow on his license plate while going to church early on a Sunday morning. He dropped my name, etc, to no avail. Mundelein hammered him. Mind you, I don't blame the suburban street cops, most are good guys, but they are under intense pressure to come in with tickets (read money). This though is why average suburban citizens have a big distaste for the police.

first of all:...to anyone involved in (any kind of) an accident, let's hope that the person(s) (including this odpo) survives their injuries; whatever the circumstances, if there is punishment involved, then so be it, let the system work its course; secondly, to those who judge and criticize the CPD, based on news reports, etc.,:....walk a mile in our shoes, see what it means to work in law enforcement, and then make whatever judgments and opinions you see fit...much has been made about character, how to attract and retain the "best and brightest"....well, how is that done? how does the city attract and employ the best, to work weekends, holidays, night shifts (missing family events like graduations, weddings, school plays, etc.).....one might say...well, you get paid!....so, mr/mrs/critique.....come on board!....join us!.....you'll get paid too!!, to patrol at night and on weekends, to chase people who are armed, carrying drugs, down dark alleyways and up stairways (that might not always lead where you think they should go)...maybe up to a rooftop, or down to a railyard....or did I forget the "domestic disturbance" (the one where no one is married to anyone), where the kids are hungry and neglected, the adults are fighting over some bulls@@t..and then once you're there! (ms. suburbanite), you can comment about the "evils" of an off-duty officer involved in a traffic accident

The topic AT HAND are the comments posted, not the actual DUI if you read SCC's post.

Many of the comments weren't even addressed to the actual subject matter. Instead, people used it to call our civil service people pigs, and other names. On Christmas Day to boot.

Just because one person makes an err in judgement, doesn't mean the rest need to be labeled as such. It would be nice if you (CPD) actually set aside your difference, came together for a change, and started sticking up for yourselves for once. I have pride in you, and you should have pride in yourselves!!!!!

This state is a cesspool of garbage. It's no longer the Land of Land, but Land of Ghetto.

WHEN GOD MADE COPS
When the Lord was creating cops, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle his uniform."
"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses, and testify in court the next day."
"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals.
And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands... no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?" (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) "Another pair here in the side of his head for his partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look
reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say,'You'll be all right ma'am,' when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't," said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked.
"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop ... and still it keeps its sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," he said.

As a crime reporter working for a daily newspaper in Southern Oregon I can say that the Trib's reporting in this case, and in the "Shielded From the Truth" series that ran earlier this month, is a bit, well, suspect.

The "Shielded" series, which dealt with police shootings, was about as one sided a story as I've ever seen. I'm sure this DUI story will inspire another series about cops' drinking problems. From this blog I've learned that Trib reporters are shadowing cops at Chicago bars.

My paper has a good relationship with the police because each side remains openminded and fair. When a cop saves a life, I write that story. When a cop makes a mistake, I write that story. I have found that most cops are open with press members that they trust to be fair and honest.

Is it any wonder why the CPD chooses not to comment on slanted hit pieces? Why provide more ammo?

I have recently applied to the Portland Police Bureau. My career change was inspired by the professionals I deal with both in our newsroom and the local police department.

Besides, I would rather be a good cop than an ok reporter.

By the way, the recent surge in cop blogs is an invaluable journalism tool. It really gives the public insight into the thinking that goes on behind the bad, be it clear, frustrated or disheartened.

So now you guys get to hate on me for being a press guy. Let the beatings begin...

If true, this officer was wrong, wrong, wrong. By the grace of god he only hurt himself. I hope he recovers and I hope he gets help for his drinking problem if binge drinking has been the norm for him.

Blowing up this tragedy resulting from poor judgement of this officer AND those around him while he was over drinking is not fair.

Cops are people too. And the fact is if you layed out all the DUIs by those careers that have a high life and death threshold, I don't think the CPD would fall that far from the norm.

As has been previously posted, you have illegals driving drunk and uninsured, hurting and sometimes killing people in a "sanctuary" shity that prohibits notifying the INS of known illegal immigrant gang bangers killing or less by vehicle.

Stop piling on the CPD. You got no-it-al celebrities like Kiefer Sutherland, Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan and others like Congressman who have the money and the means to not drive drunk but don't.

Respectfully,

The whole perception problem can be traced directly to the Department's Drugs, Gangs and Guns mantra. Many of our officers have been conditioned to think like thugs. As corny as it sounds, the Department needs to get back into the "We Serve and Protect" mode.

When we served and protected, we still had our enemies, but we had much greater support from the average citizen.

Let's not forget before we all do the, "I'm holier than thou" speech, that the holidays esp Christmas can be very emotional and depressing times of the year.
We don't really know why this guy over indulged, what was going through his head, we all just assume that it was while having a great time. Maybe he was trying to drown sorrow. Don't be so quick to all point fingers. Police officers have one of the highest suicide rates for a reason. God's speed on his recovery. Peace and well wishes this Christmas to him and his family.
And for the rest of the mindless, insensitive comments out there, well I hope it never happens to you.
Merry Christmas my favorite city workers :) Peace

Someone made the comment that the cop from Major Accidents should have known better. Hell, he's a police office, we ALL should know better but we Chicago Police Officers keep doing this stupid shit in public with sickening regularity.

A few years ago there was an officer from IAD arested for soliciting a prostitute who was really an undercover police officer. He then begged and cried for a break. He's from IAD for chris' sake! Shouldn't HE have known better? As it turns out, he was given the big break for doing the same thing once before and then DID IT AGAIN!

Chicago Police Officers have a well deserved reputation for being undisciplined drunken dishonest miserably poor excuses for police officers.

I've heard well enough of how we risk it all every day, I've heard it for 27 years.

The plain fact is, we deserve the bad reputation we have. When was the last time any type of peer presure stopped a cop from doing something wrong? When was the last time a tact Sgt. stopped one of his team from flushing his career down the toilet? And when we stop a drunken cop who among you has the guts to actualy hold that person accountable for his DUI?

A cop is considered a good guy if he always looks the other way at police misbehaviour. That's why we are so hated and despised. We hold citizens to a high standard, if they don't know anybody, but we can get away with anything.

The best thing this new Supt. can do is put FBI in charge of IAD and start firing bad cops by the boatload.

We will get the respect of the general public across the city and state when we start behaving in a professional manner. We have to obey the laws, we can't drink and drive, we can't lie, cheat and steal.

The tempo of an organization like this is set from the top and for many years the guy at the top has been corrupt. Maybe now it will start to change. I doubt it but maybe.

I will retire soon, you young officers will have to learn that we can't do the stuff we arest people for. Plain and simple. Respect is earned, you don't get it just by pinning a piece of tin on your chest.

They stopped my family member and wrote a ticket for basic shit (disobeying stop sign) and even when they were told that her mom and step dad were the police for 20years they were told 'so what'. When I attempted to contact Officer Ronald Pett to find out if my family member could ask for supervision, like we can in Cook County, this goof never called me back. What a chicken shit!

First, a big FUCK YOU for such a stupid statement. To get into MAIU as a traffic specialist you have to take a test, just like detectives. This guy passed the test and made it.

Second, he was wrong! I just hope he's not DEAD wrong. He's all busted up inside, lost a lot of blood and is in critical condition. But he's only human. Lots of baggage he's been carrying and sometimes it's too much for anyone.

I pray for his recovery, not only from the physical damage he's done to himself, but the mental anguish that brought him there. He'll be charged with DUI, that's a fact. But non-probationary police are entitled to the same one chance supervision anyone else is.

Hopefully, he'll recover, take his 30 day suspension and loss of a lot of income, and put his life back on track. Maybe he'll be dumped from MAIU, maybe not. That decision is for others to make. The most important thing right now is for him to survive the injuries he as sustained. The rest can work out in time.

And to my fellow officers: once again a copper got jammed up drinking. At least he didn't kill or seriously hurt anyone other than himself. When will we (Coppers everywhere) learn that drinking and driving just doesn't mix?

Happy Holidays.

Now why have a news story on an off duty police officer who was drinking and involved in an accident. Did he get special privelages? NO. Was he arrested and charged with DUI? Yes. Just another crutch for MR. & Mrs. shitty to complain about. What's the difference, hundreds of people are arrested for DUI's everyday. I don't see people hating bus drivers, taxi drivers even if they were working while arrested for DUI's, carpenters, construction workers. Why don't the news start having new flashes everytime someone who collects SSI, Housing or Wick gets arrested for drugs, DUI's or any felonys. Then cut them off of thier freebies. Why aren't the illegals punished, sponges of society punished. Guess Im the one screwed up! Better yet Don't let anyone who collects any type of SSI,Housing Federal or State handouts vote and watch what happens. Maybe the politicians will want to do something to get the vote of the working people by doing what is right for a change!!

SCC

Though maybe we could get a post up about the SWAT tryouts not sure what you think about that.

But here are somem of the numbers if you al are interested.

With just about 240 applicants only 45 passed the shoot and physical requirements. What is that about a 19% pass rate. Just though people would want to comment. I for one would.

Was just wondering where all these guys I hear in the districts were for tryouts......200 out of we will say 11,000. Not very many if you ask me. What happened to all those who talk the talk about us SWAT guys not doing anything special and having the same quals as the avergae P.O. justa phone call? What happened to all those who say open it up to the whole city and you will get a flood of "more qualified P.O.'s? They even dropped the requirements for this first test. Was just curious where they all were? According to the numbers I will even give adjustment for error only 20% could talk the talk and walk the walk. Something should be said for that.

That is all SCC would love to hear people's take hope I am not being too selfish.

You know I for one cannot support drinking and driving. Being a victim at one time in my life of a D.U.I. accident that almost took my life, I don't think anyone should get off for it. However, as a member of the C.P.D. we have been under so much pressure as I am sure this copper has been, it's understandable that he would have too much to drink. Some of these civies have no idea what the bad publicity has done to the majority of us, it's astounding. Because the public here in Chicago has been tainted by our police-bashing media, it's nice to hear an opinion from someone who can think for themselves. Good luck in your pursuit of a law enforcement career. I came on the CPD in 1986 & have had a GREAT time 99.9% of the time. You'll NEVER meet a better group of people, and contrary to the public's perception, a huge majority of the Police Officers in Chicago love the job and are out there every day & night making a difference.

Hopefully he will fully recover.

Excessive alcohol consumtion is nothing new to the CPD. Nobody will ever understand why unless you were or are a cop. This is no excuse. It is just fact. When you walk the line day in and day out it takes it toll. Alcohol helps.

Wrong, the PC comes from CPD mgt. Its an order to sit on the street and and pull over cars for belts, then that allows the police to have a small dialoge and request a license and insurance from the driver, and take a visual of the interior of the car in plain view and smell for drugs or booze.

I did not imply that you just toss the car for no reason.

You remember the 70's right? people should have respect for the police for just wearing a badge.....why??? Because we are the police and its the right thing to do. The problem is we are in a city that deflects all its negativity towrds the police and away from the arrogant politians and clout heavy arrogant fucks. Plain and simple.....There is in any job, any profession for any and every company always gonna be people who are fuck ups. So explain to me why every dam time somebody steps on their dick the media...the play rev's....and our lovely city government makes it look like we are all just a bunch of theiving drunk out of control hoodlums? ITS WRONG PERIOD.
Dont label me and my fellow officers that way oldtimer, dont even try, cause you have gotten away with more shit than you would like to believe. I'm proud to be the police and if one of my fellow brothers needs me then I'll be there for him and her. We are the only ones who have each others backs along with our families. Why does the media cover for its own? why does the church? alderman? mayor? and so on and so on and so on....because they do! Does this mean I condone dirty police? Hell no!!!! But I will not let the dirty public, dirty politians and the dirty rev's continue to drag the good deeds and good names of alot of Police officers because of a mistake or lapse in judgement or the actions of some out of line police. Everyone makes mistakes pal. We knew when we raised our right hand and swore to an oath to uphold the law, but enough of the goddam target pratice on the chicago police by this liberal puke city. How dare you say we deserve this! There are thousands of acts of courage, kindness and bravery that no one will ever see or be made aware of....so to say that you never hear of any is just plain stupid!!!!!!! No one holds citizens to a high standard, the law wont allow it. You see it in court every dam day! Cook county has to be the only place in the country where you can be convicted of 1st dgree murder, sentenced to 20 years, actually do 5 and go right back on the street and commit more felonies and only get a year or two. Where as if you are the police and you have NEVER BEEN ARRESTED IN YOUR WHOLE LIFE LET ALONE A RECEIVING A TRAFFIC TICKET and you DUI killing someone because of a very bad lapse in judgement and just plain stupidity you get 15years and have to serve the whole term. Or lets not even talk about the Mette case where he was DEFENDING HIMSELF. Any mutt on the street has his case thrown out 10seconds flat when he hits the bench for a battery but oooooh no, not CPD. Yep I understand we are held to a higher standard but I also believe whats good for the goose is good for the gander and the gander needs to be put in check!!!!! You cowards wanna bash the police, your own fellow officers and drive our name in the ground along with the other pukes in this city?????? Im not gonna do it! So go and retire oldtimer, you put your 27 years in, good for you! Enjoy it, now leave you comments for the other oldtimers in AZ or FL cause they have no business or merit here.

Thank you SCC
Still proud to be CPD
another "phone call" Swatguy

It's probably because nobody cares anymore, why go out of your way? I know plenty of people who decided to take a pass on SWAT, why give this dept all of your time and energy anymore? do what you must and no more...

Not that I have a problem with searching any jagoff's car but...... uninformed goofs like you spouting off in public is a big problem on this job. A seatbelt violation in and of itself is not PC to search someone's vehicle. Learn the law, its part of your job and will save you embarassment, money and headache in he long run.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe the driver or passenger might have been moving around and caused the officer to remove them for safety and then do a cursory search? all perfectly legal, maybe you should learn the law and save yourself from sounding stupid as well.

Ive been a cop for 3 years now. I'm reminded of the total ignorance of the public when my little sister (who lives in 023) complains about "living in the ghetto." 23 aint the best, but it sure isnt the ghetto...by far. Everyone always asks cops about stories. "Tell us a story!" Well, when you tell them about the guy who got shot in the chest, the guy who got decapitated in an accident, the 4 kids in an accident with a semi who will never walk again for the rest of their lives because mom was in a hurry and ran a red light, or the guy who laid in his own home and died by choking on his own regurgitated feces thanks to a bowel obstruction...all of a sudden no one wants to know the story anymore. Sometimes I wonder how I'll make it another 22 years in this job. People who say "why was that officer drinking?" well, Im not condoning it by any means and its unfortunate he got hurt and hurt someone else, but Im no angel and Im not about to pretend that I havent done that same thing in the past and neither should anyone else...cop or not. This can be the loneliest profession there is and as humans someitmes we give in to negative urges. Everypone wants to know a cop, but no one really wants to KNOW a cop. My prayers are with him, I dont know him at all, but yet he is my brother.

When I call the desk and tell you I need help from the police, never and I mean never, put me through to a 911 dispatcher.

You sir are what is really the problem on this job, not the media.

The coppers who responded were professional and cared. If you read this site and you know who I am, your an embarrassement.

I would not do that to you.

It has happened before and it will happen again. But it is not indicative of the whole department. Other organizations have far worse scandals than we, we are just the flavor of the moment.

This is why people hate us. Why do you think outside agencies arent worthy to read this blog? Any cop is a brother of ours and should know what goes on around him. I want to know what is going on in our surrounding subs. You probably feel the same about the district you work in, dont want another district cop in there working or cherry picking. Get off your high horse.

Shouldnt Daley be held to a higher standard fo his shnanigans with his son?

12/26/2007 05:44:00 PM

BINGO!!!Thankyou for posting the truth.Quotas=piss poor police work.

12/26/2007 08:34:00 PM

================================
As a suberban cop who lives in the city I get parkers from city coppers for bull shit reasons (having the rear bumber of my car extenting into the tow zone at the corner of the block I live on sucks, the copper doesnt even run my plate to show that I live on the block and that my name is clear.
My dept has quotas for movers and parkers. Most of our movers are taken care of with accidents, suspended/revoked DLs, and P.C. to get dope. For our parkers we drive by parolees, sex offernder, and general shit heads to make sure their regestraion and city sickers are all up to date.
Quotas do suck for police, because you will always have that number in the back of your head. Some officers love to ticket regular citizens and some depts have outrageous quotas for tickets and even DUI quotas.
Traffic and Parking tickets are all part of being a cop. but when we are evaluated on our monthly totals it sucks.

Here is what YOU are entitled to....a great big FUCK YOU! You respect the police because its the right thing to do....I dont have to earn anything from any Joe citizen....they have to earn my trust for my safety. Then the respect shall follow. If you wanna treat every Officer as J.F. or Abatte then you are gonna get a rude awakining. And you strokes wonder why the police are so miserable. Tell me this then....how do you earn respect with the current condition of the media, politians and the public? When the crap they broadcast over the news and papers is only of a small small percentage they are the ones who make it seem as though we're nothing but what they say. When in fact, it could be farther from the truth. I'll tell you how to earn respect from your fellow officers....work in a fast district, make arrests, listen to guys with time on the job, dont whine, always back each otherup and just be yourself. If you try to hard to fit in, you wont. Now how do you get respect from the public?.........you never will because people do not like authority and they do not like being told what they can and cannot do. The only people I care about getting respect from is my fellow officers. You say its arrogance or a scumbag sense of entitlement.....I say your an asshole and a slimey fuck.

I am a suburban dispatcher. What I have seen in my 12 years experience is that the GOOD cops are the ones with no degree. Last time I checked there is no class in common sense, unselfishness, and courtesy. I am not saying all of the cops with a degree are the same as you, however for the most part I really don't see how a masters degree or any degree for that matter can prepare you for the moment of shoot or be shot. Good policing skills come from many areas not just from a degree. Perhaps the arrogance you spread because you have a degree is what creates the anomosity with the so called GED officers you speak of. Maybe if your degree was not the quality you most brag about you would have more friens and better relationship with your co-workers. I ofter laugh everytime one of these degree officers comes and asks me, THE STUPID DISPATCHER how to classify a call. Have fun proofreading and correcting my post. Just remember I am not claiming to be something I am not. I am comfortable with who I am bad spelling, grammar and all. Common sense is the key to success in this field, arrogance is key to bitterness.
