Respect a Two Way Street

  • The most creative proposal we've heard for improving [the Chicago Police Department slogan] comes from Thomas Epach, a former executive assistant to Chicago's superintendent. Epach appreciates the need for a change of culture. But he also urges Chicagoans not to overlook the strengths of what he sees as steadily better educated, better trained officers. "You get murdered in Chicago and you're still having a good day," Epach says. "The most talented police force in America is on the case."

    His proposed rewrite:

"We Serve and Protect -- With Respect."
The trouble with respect is that one has to give it to get it. Anyone gotten any lately?

We've been 6 months without a contract and the last time one was signed promptly and within a few weeks of the previous agreement expiring was...never.

The City spends its time taking away contractual rights and protections that are afforded to the lowliest crack addicted prostitute, but not to its police officers.

You drive a squad car down the streets of a dozen neighborhoods we could mention, and you have to run your windshield wipers just to clear the spit out of the air.

You have aldercreatures scoring cheap political points off police who are enforcing the laws that the aldercreatures pass in the City Council. And "reverends," too.

You have the mayor shorting our pension by over half, while having his son and nephew running ventures with what there is of our pension money and making a tidy profit to boot.

You have 30% of bosses whose only qualification is who they know, who they blow, who they are related to, or who they gave money to. Actually, it's probably way higher as you have entire legions of house mice who happen to work for the people who develop the test scoring in the top 1% of test takers.

Don't even get us started on the media.

And when was the last time the mayor showed up at a parade to honor our dead?

But hey, if changing a slogan is going to make everyone feel better about the police... whatever. Let us know how that works out.

Never really got a chance to know Epach, but I hope to God his "addition" never sees the light of day attached to the side of any Chicago Police car.
Respect is a two way street, Mr. john q. public.

Umm....that might work in Naperville, Oak Brook, Hinsdale - you know, places with a certain segment of society, people who actually work, who keep up their homes, and the like.

That will not work here in Chicago, not when a certain segment of society does not even respect themselves in the first place. Nor do they care about the upkeep of their rental property, their 'govment' subsidized property, and we know that they do not work.

Yes, I find it hard to think that these people even know what respect is all about. They DO have the disrespect thing down, hats off to them for that!

Dumb Ideas!

I am all about them so let's get started:

Let's have the FOP replaced with FOM (Fraternal Order of MEDIA) Since nobody speaks up for us anyways as we get lambasted let us just use the MEDIA as our Union to decide our contractual outcome since they represent those that complain about us anyway!

How about We just add some more PODS......Like every corner! Instead of having a COP ON EVERYCORNER you get the flashing POD BOX thing to Harass you taxpaying citizens!

We Serve and Protect With Respect! You know Rodney King just wanted Respect that was ALL! Thats what they say anyway so Why not..... Let's respect those that DO NOT RESPECT THEMSELVES NOR OTHERS! That is basically why they Rape Rob Steal or KILL! I think for the most part the Police in Chicago are in need of reminders so let us put it in writing on the squad cars since we are so DUMB!?!?!?

Why don't we all move out of our neighborhoods we are so fond of (022, 008, 016, 017, 025, 024, 020 and MOVE into 007, 010, 003,015, 011 wherever there is a ghetto and LIVE where DALEY thinks we are best suited then we may GET THE APPROPRIATE RAISE we are seeking!

Lets continue to get the HEADS that SOMEBODY needs to justify THEIR existence as Deputy something or Tact Lieutenant or whatever. They will appreciate it and take care of us as we get more CR#'s doing Warrants and getting GUNS off the street and preventing the inevitable violence by the proactive effective work we do! (No need to hide numbers)

DOC missions, CONTACT CARDS, school dismissals, CAPS, POD missions and arrests, TRR reports, WOLF PACK, OPERATION this and that etc. .......Now that someones careers are made from all this paper generating can we knock it off now CLINE is retired THE SMOKE has lifted and the mirrors are cracked so let just go back to the way it was and get back to reality.

BASEBALL CAPS AND GARAGE GUY PANTS......Just not sexy enough for me not to mention unprofessional looking I guess. So maybe we should just leave it alone and add something to it like SEWN on NAME TAGS that say JOE's GARAGE.

Eliminate the PADDY WAGON (call it something more politically correct like the DUDE HAULER........we won't need it anymore since we are not rounding everyone up violating civil rights any more and it is just medieval and it burns way to much gas....... so let us replace them with solar powered minitrucks to help the environment with windows and seat belts and air bags and DVD players for the kids you know a more people friendly and customer service oriented transport vehicle. You know since WE CARE and RESPECT now.

I got a million dumb ideas but I am saving them for my interview with J.P.!

That strikes me as funny, because yesterday at 65th and Lowe as I was going to my car, a POS was wearing one of those face mask things and hocked one up when he saw me, and then had to swallow it. I told him "kinda hard to spit with those on isn't it? " and no comment from him. I just laughed.

"You get murdered in Chicago and you're still having a good day. The most talented police force in America is on the case." - Thomas Epach

"The game is afoot", Epach.

What's this guy's definition of "a bad day"? Put away your hyperbolic bong, Epach. While the CPD has always been blessed with a few dozen outstanding homicide detectives, many are just clout babies who lack real street experience, aren't exactly Mensa material and couldn't "detect" an elephant in a phone booth.

Start with our clueless, clouted Chief of Detectives. For those suckholes who would like to get "the deer in the headlights" an appropriate Christmas gift, check out the houndstooth deerstalker caps at "Hats Plus", 4706 W. Irving Park Road.

Then she can add her Burberry trenchcoat and stare at herself in the mirror as delusions of grandeur wash over her.

No. "Full rigor" is not caused by Viagra, Maria.

Meerschaum pipe, a cape and an oversized magnifying glass are optional, "Chief".

So what's the CPD homicide clearance rate under your watch, Mr. Epach?

I laughed when I read the Trib. editorial for the addition of "With Respect" to our vehicles. As you stated, it's a 2 way street. No contract and no signs of one in the near future. Working 6 days in a row. If you noticed I didn't say 6 a week because some will dispute that it pours over into a new work week. A mayor that does not care about the police unless they are driving him around and protecting him. A mayor that shows contempt for his protectors by cowering to a screaming minority (revs, ald. and media.) I've told my family that if I ever get killed in the line of duty I don't want this prick anywhere near my funeral. The rest of my family has been told this too. Maybe it should be written in a will or something. As you stated, respect is a 2 way street and for far too long it's been going one way.

How you people put up with the inept, ass kissing, political appointees to city jobs is beyond me. But, all of you are in my thoughts as you go out there each and every day and run toward danger while everyone else is retreating. How about this for respect...

Aldercreature Hairston, 5th ward, called an emergency block club meeting the other night to address the rash of burglaries on a certain block (there were a whole 3 total in 2007!!!)

A watch commander and A/2/RBT were ordered to attend by a certain Deputy.

During the meeting, Hairston did nothing but attack the police.

She said things were better when it was darker-referring to the white police.

She can say that but if I were to respond that the area was better when it was whiter, I'd be a racist.

Let's start recruiting some of these really bright, highly motivated kids out of Ignatius, Fenwick, Rita, Lane, Gordon Tech and Brother Rice whose blue collar parents don't have the bucks to send them to a real college.

Start using intelligence tests like the old days instead of meaningless sheepskins from city colleges, Jerry Lewis U. and Robert Morris.

If somebody gets out of high school with a 140 I.Q., he doesn't dumb down to a moron because he couldn't afford the time or money to attend college.

If some highly vocal groups scream about adverse impact and racism against minorities, just recruit our very brightest white, black, Hispanic and Asian men and women from the talent pool without regard to formal education levels.

A sgt has a responsibility to help keep the officers under him safe. Using the lightening in the right situation could keep people from getting hurt (and I give a fuck about asshole). Any supervisor who can keep a PO from getting hurt and does not meet that obligation is nothing short of reprehensible.

Tom Epach actually lived in LaGrange all the time he worked for the city. Had a bullshit cover address on Jackson Blvd. He parked his department issued unmarked in the LaGrange PD parking lot so as to make it appear that he was there of business.

In response to you, I am a Sgt. on the North side and I notice all the tasers always there "all" the time. Meaning I am about the only one taking the damn thing out.

There are many female Sgts. out there that could probably use one if they ever got into it with some jagbag. I guess everybody is afraid to have the thing because "someone can die".

I think for their own good they should take one out and the good of their men and women on the street. Just my opinion since I am north now and not running all over the ghetto's anymore doesn't mean there isn't going to be a "situation" where asshole flips out or refuses to cooperate etc.

We are running scared folks!!!!

Best of Luck out there blue shirts I can only be in so many places at once and I don't work 24/7.

The best non-lethal weapon we have ever had is the Taser.

Every time I have used it, there would have been a battle with maybe police getting hurt.

I know some people are afraid to carry it because a low-life or two have died after being Tased. These OFFENDERS had one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel anyway.

When you start worrying about getting sued over using a department approved weapon, it's time to hit the desk job boys and girls.

To underappreciated and underpaid - welcome to the real world, police are the new female, underappreciated underpaid - when was the last time someone tried to "hump' you in the street? Some of your officers uniforms are probably worn out from being groped. From a westside resident - enough with the prostitute comments - you are starting to sound sexist and a woman hater. Everybody comes to the west side to 'act an as-@, stop blaming the residents.
