God forbid the officer writing the report should take a little pride and write a legible fucking report that doesn't look like grade school material.

If this were a cop hed have felony charges already, its happened for lesser offenses. Plus we would be hearing that crap about how police are held to a higher standard. Apparently, lawyers arent and while were accused of protecting our own no one is more blatant about doing that than the members if the Illinois Bar Assoc.,
the report looks like it was written by a 6th Grader. Typical, just slop it down and it gets approved, and let others deal with it.

I would love to see what happens with this...Judge O'Malley, at Branch 29) is a proud former Marine (not to mention former CPD officer). Even if it doesn't go anywhere, he might have a few choice words for the defendant.

I cannot believe a supervisor actually signed this report. The officer KNEW that this was an off-duty sergeant and Marine. Do you think you might have taken a little bit of time and made it so you can read it? This is a disgrace to the department. My 6 year old can write neater than this. How about we take some pride. You know these reports end up in court where other professionals are reading them. No wonder they don't think of us as professionals!!!
This is a great example of why all case reports should be done on a computer. But of course, we don't have the capabilty. They just look more professional.

Why?
The report with the info is public information, and he put his own pictures, looking like some sex offender, out there on the internet.
This is why I have nothing on any of my personal vehicles that identify me as the police or former military. Years ago when I was new on the job, I had an FOP and a St. Jude sticker on my car. Me and my date went to a concert, (I parked legally in the designated lot) when we returned to my car, one whole side had been keyed. None of the cars around me suffered the same fate, but none of them had police stickers on them either. I learned a lesson that day. I am not blaming the victim, and I plan to file a complaint with the Illinois IRDC. It is wrong that we run the risk of things like that happening to us, but the fact is that we do, so I no longer advertize who I am when I am off duty.
I didn't know they were teaching case reporting in the 2nd grade now. I really hope the rest of 024 is a little better at reports and writting than this.
The penmanship is lousy, but at least from what I could read was spelled correctly,used proper forms of possession, and correct spelling. Ninety percent of the coppers that post here need a remedial class in grammar. The reason the sgts. don't say anything is because a vast majority of them don't know anything.
I could care less if P.O. Ivery can't write very well. I know that this guy would back me up in a heartbeat! He's done so in the past and is a true copper! BFD it looks like chicken scratch. I bet you wouldn't mind when his 6'2" 250# body and Agar Smoked Ham hands are assisting you on a 10-1! I know a couple of coppers with PHD's that write a hell of a lot worse and wouldn't assist you for anything!

Easy there Big Fella....I am not one to comment on the subject much, or be called the "Spelling Police" BUT you did bring it up first. So allow me a quick retort, if you will....
It is PRIDE, you dumb fuck, PRIDE. As in, the officer did not take too much pride in his work and submitted this sub-standard report. Then you did not take PRIDE in your blog comment (or maybe you went to Lane Tech)and you spelled PRIDE p-r-i-e-d.

I had to look at the photos of this goof just to be sure it wasn't the same guy in this story. It wasn't, but maybe it was his skinny brother.
Last summer I was having coffee with an old partner of mine at a Starbucks. A big guy with a new Corvette pulls into the lot and parks so his car takes up two spaces so it would not get scratched. He comes inside, buy his coffee and leaves. Everybody inside watches him as he pulls away. A middle aged white guy in a suit said that the last time he saw somebody do that he keyed the car front to back and did a good job about it.
He probably told that story any number of times and people laughed about it. He was stunned at my reaction, "What an asshole! You tell me you did that and what did you expect? Stay away from me and my car." He sputtered like Richie Daley and left in a huff.
Stay safe, and keep an eye out for assholes in suits.

hahaha I'm sorry, but this guy is write. I try my best to at least write legibly. I was able to completely read this only after a couple of attempts.

Whenever I get report that looks like this, I give it back to the officer that wrote it and ask him/her to read. Half of the time, they can't even read their own writing.
Shame on the sergeant for signing this crap.
On another note, not to take up for the lawyer, but why didn't you block out his personal info (DL, address, phone, etc)? You just exposed this guy to all kinds of identity theft issues.
And what about the witness? He's just trying to help out and all his info is out there, too. Use some common sense next time, SCC!

this said it best!! yes the report was sloppy but as policeman tend to do we love to bash our own. this post was about the asshole lawyer who is getting away with a felony against one of our own because he is a scumbag lawyer. Why all the angst over the PO's penmanship? I found it just as easy to read as most other handwritten documents these day -- spelled correctly, tenses matched, got the points across. No issues for this Conan the Grammarian...
One thing I find interesting is the comment about "military plates." The Marine might have state-issued plates with a military theme, but DoD does not issue license plates to privately owned vehicles.

I spent many years reviewing case reports and saw the embarrassing work-product of officers that were CPS graduates. I joined the corporate sector after retirement and soon saw the negative effect that poorly written police reports had on the outcome of civil cases.
Why the obsession with the case report? The real issue is the J/O attorney. Besides, this report looks like most I've seen---done in a hurry to get to the next job. Let's stand together because so many others enjoy trying to knock us down.

I retired with over thirty years on the job. I would not have allowed this type of garbage on my watch. This kid can't write a report. The report is written well. Not everyone has great penmanship. The content is all there.

A few years ago, a friend of mine was killed on the West Side. (Really.)
Cops and SA's did their homework, tracked down witnesses, made them talk, got the phone records and everything to nail the case, and the guy is in prison now.
But I've never been quite satisfied, because the original report had very poor penmanship.

The report looks shitty, but the content reads like it should and all the pertinent info is there once you spend the twenty minutes deciphering it. If anything, we should be blaming the city for not giving us the technology to do away with carbon-copy, hand-written reports.
That said, it might be time for our incoming Supt. to strongly consider establishing a Penmanship Unit with Commanduh Kolman at the helm.

For Jay R. Grodner and to a much lesser extent, the handful of anonymous jagoffs that have nothing better to do than criticize the case report submitted by the 24th Dist. officer: a lusty FUCK YOU!
I'm a watch commander and the narrative of this report is typical of what I see everyday on arrest reports and case reports.
I would have to kick back 3 out of every 4 arrest reports for spelling and punctuation errors on a daily basis. It is to a point where now I only kick back those reports in which there is liability to the P.O. (example: a TRR package). Otherwise, I'm tired of being looked at as an asshole by college educated officers and 20 year veteran officers who return to their computer / typewriter and call me a "dickhead" for requiring a clear concise narrative. It's to a point where if there are less then 5 spelling errors and 5 syntax / punctuation errors, etc, I sign off and send it through. The worse is the inability to correctly spell a street name, the words "complaint,"
"offender," "homicide,"
"aggravated," "burglary,"
"notified," and the list goes on.
It is unfortunate that this officer is singled out for a problem that is of epidemic proportions on this job.
Re: Reporting writing
I spent many years reviewing case reports and saw the embarrassing work-product of officers that were CPS graduates. I joined the corporate sector after retirement and soon saw the negative effect that poorly written police reports had on the outcome of civil cases.

Are you kidding? look at the inbasket most case reports look like this. A Sgt. would have to kick back 90% of all reports if that were the case. Not only that but hed have to kick them back 5 or six times to get most PO's to do it right. Then copper would still turn in crap reorts.

Sorry to butt in - I'm not CPD. I work for the department due north of 024. I spent 5 years riding a beat with its border on Howard, less than a mile away from where the whole incident occurred. Now I'm a dick so I read a lot of reports. Reports done by guys who came on the job in early seventies, right after tours in Vietnam and reports done by guys who were ASA's - with law degrees from big 10 school - in one of the collar counties before they become cops. I have never met PO Ivery in person. I have few words for him though. Hold on bud. Do not worry a bit. All that shit will pass. Do your job just like you did with that asshat lawyer.
