Only 45?

  • Chicago police said they seized 45 weapons off the city's streets on New Year's eve. The weapons included a semiautomatic pistol, a .22 caliber rifle and a 12 gauge semiautomatic shotgun. Interim Superintendent Dana Starks [said] every gun removed from the streets is potentially a saved life. He said police prepared for the holiday by beefing up patrols.
Beefing up patrols? We still counted about 6 rapid cars missing in action where we were. And the late shifts still operated down beat cars all night.

And only forty-five guns? Didn't we used to do triple or more that number? We certainly heard more than a dozen weapons going off in our neck of the woods.

In past years Forensic Services would record over 10,000 firearms recovered a year. Recently the numbers are down around six thousand. Including the free gift card programs. I wonder why. Could it be that there are less guns in the city now. Or option B people get burned out quicker and dont care. Option B

SCC, where I work (southside), I don't think a single UUW arrest was made on 1st watch last night. I can recall years ago coming in with a wagon full of lowlifes, and a trunk full of weapons with my team. Didn't hear a whole lot of shooting, and what I did hear was mainly in our sections of large numbers of public housing residents. Even that ended before 1AM. I guess folks see that we are serious, and it ain't no fun to be on the bus to County on New Year's day, caught up in a felony!

The overwhelming feeling was
"Who cares?" Let them shoot. Why get hurt by taking careless action to get a gun on New Years. The cost outweighs the benefit. No felony approval and God forbid you shoot the guy, you are toast for shooting a poor New Years Eve reveler. I'll be the first to admit I used to love working New Years but now that I am responsible for others, I keep them at bay till a reasonable time and thenm let them loose. Now commence bashing me.

Maybe it's because people woke up and decided not to sit in gangways and alleys waiting for the shooting to start. If you can't get a gun the rest of the year don't try to make up for it on New Years. I think lack of interest these days is also a contributing factor. It isn't because SOS was disbanded, they all went to district and could have continued there heroics, they didn't, they got smart and appearently so did everyone else.

I used to enjoy the gun pinches too. When they used to take 45 minutes to complete.

But then came the computerized inventories, case reports, arrest reports, multiple notifications, and packets of everything in triplicate (1) copy to each and every "paper pushing bean counter" so they can justify their (safe inside spot)existence!

Fuck them!

I'll get a UUW pinch again when I am the intended victim! Then I'll do all of the above, plus a TRR and meet with IPRA and then take some IOD time for R&R, you know claim PTSD or something!

**********************************

Also, any copper on here worth his/her salt on this job has surely had UUW's.

But to all the strokes who still have to come on here and brag about how many Guns they have recovered, or how they are the real police, get over yourselves!

You are the goofs all of us talk about behind your backs, because we get sick of hearing your shit!

Most of the cops on this job do the same shit day in a day out without bragging about it.

You guys know who you are. That IOD (rotator cuff tear) isn't from wrestling an offender or bench pressing 380 in the gym. IT'S FROM PATTING YOURSELF ON THE BACK ALL THE TIME!

008 (1st watch)was rocking and rolling all night. And for the peorson who said there wasnt any police shootings you are wrong...there was one in 008 chots fired at the police and by the police. There were several guns recovered by the 1st watch. We did have a lot of help out there (for the first time in a loooong time) so we got thru it ok, we were still in a back log at check off though.I have to say, why go around chasing these assholes w/guns and end your life. In the end no one really cares that you recovered a gun or two, except for maybe your buddies at the bar when you speak of it. The people, mayor, supt., don't deserve for me to risk my life for them.

I didn't post this but I am willing to bet my house on the fact that the Abbate incident ruined the job much more than the SOS scandal. There's always been and always will be some type of scandal in CPD. Tac guys in 2, 7, 10, 15, 25, Gangs North etc. have all been indicted of doing some corrupt shit in the past. None of those incidents did shit to the department except put them in the news for a bit. The Abbate incident ran Cline out of town, brought down the Area 4 gun team, brought the SOS scandal into the news, almost had the FEDS take us over and basically showed the world how the city would cover up for certain people(Area 4 gun team). Abbate did much more damage to the department than SOS. Before I get a bunch of "fuck SOS" comments just think about it. Every time I read one of these posts that have someone claiming to be the real police, I cringe and wonder why oh why....Listen up boys and girls, the real police no longer exist. I came on in '90 and believe me, back then they were fast becoming extinct. I dont mean that I am the real police. I am not. I did my job the best I could, backed up my fellow officers and didnt screw over the others on my watch and my partner and I always went home to our families. I used to think it meant something, being called the "real police". I would rather be known as the go home after eight, not being sued by some idiot, police. This mentality of I do this better than you do, or I get more guns than you do, is exactly the kind of thinking that will get you hurt or going to the corporation council for your deposition on a lawsuit. The "real police" is an idea put in your mind probably in the academy or from someone who talks alot of "copper" jargon. If you do this job long enough on the streets and are smart and actually listen without spouting off, you might learn something and have the respect of your fellow officers and maybe a supervisor or two, if that is important to you. Then, in time, you will be considered a "good copper" by those that matter most or should matter. Be smart and be safe. The city doesnt give a shit if you are the "real police", you will end up on page one and fired just the same if you screw up, real police or not. Think about it, it happens every day. Look around you, some of those coffee stained, revolver carrying dinosaurs you think are dog asses might have a pearl of wisdom or two left under their flea collars.
Signed,

I knew someone was going come back with this. Actually the new consent to search and search warrant order had to do with the area 4 gun team "allegedly" using made up john doe's to get the warrant signed by the judge. The SOS guys weren't doing search warrants, they were "allegedly" kicking in doors without warrants. GPS affected only the guys in SOS. It hasn't and most likely will never go citywide.
