Welcome, and please hit the ground running. Start by launching some of that dead weight outta HQ. Like those with zero experience on the streets. Anybody with tears in thier eyes or trembling hands. That includes PO's.
How is it possible that guys with all kinds of years on the job are still pushing beat cars chasing radio calls. Those people who missed thier kids growing up, family parties and the list goes on and on.
Thanks Dad- You did your time, and us kids turned out OK except for this one...You never once discouraged me when I said I wanna be a Chicago Policeman. Your still with us, and those Pension checks keep coming- 126?? is it now?
I hope all you other sons of retired coppers take a moment and tell your dads THANKS, and You love them.

1) Heavy weapons. Even if PO's have to buy and pay to train/qualify with them, we'll still go for it.
2) Cut the brass by half. Most of them are worthless clout hacks and you know it.
Use that money to hire more PO's.
3) Get us some computers in the cars! I would love to even get one of the old antiquated piece of shit Microslates, let alone a decent one.
4) Get us some digital radios. Not these ones that cannot transmit nor hold a charge for more than 20 minutes.
5) Equip PO's with Tasers. When we need one, we cannot wait around for a Sgt to leave the station and show up. Not to mention the millions the city would save in police shootings.
6) Do not put on your kneepads for the fake reverands like out previous Supts have. It is demoralizing in a time of all-time low morale.
7) Leave tact teams in their districts. The neighborhhod I live in, and pay a lot of money to live there, should not suffer garage burglaries and robberies because all of it's PO's are detailed out to the ghetto.
8) End the ridiculous use of "gangs, guns and drugs" in every sentence!
9) Ten hour days. Even if we have no chance of getting it again, shoot for it anyways.
10) Enjoy, most of us are looking for some fresh blood!
Push rifles and training down to the districts. Tumblefuck Colorado has them. Sheriff Andy Taylor of Mayberry had them. If I were some terrorist looking for a place to have a Beslan-style high-body-count school killing, Chicago is the absolute worst-prepared place in the US because none of the district cops have long guns or IARD training, and that kind of event won't wait for SWAT/Tact/whoever. The first four cops 10-23 are the ones who need to handle.
If the evil leprachaun chimp on Five can't get with it, then get his cousin a Rock River Arms distributorship or something. If he's the slimiest most corrupt prick in the world, make that work for us.

First let me state that I am a former CPD officer who retired honorably after over 29 years of service and a member of the Jewish faith.
Assuming that the story we read about is true, and I have no reason to doubt it, I have this comment.
Grodner is a fat jagoff who is a disgrace to his profession and to his faith.
Who the fuck does he thin he is, the judge jury and executioner for the enforcement of traffic laws in 024??
He is lucky that he was not the recipient of an ass-kicking which he is in dire need of and he may have gotten, had he done that to my car.

Just an observation here. It seems that this blog has turned into 008 District Copper. The majority of comments by cowardly anonymous bloggers deal w/ the 8th district. I will guarantee that the commentors are 99.9% white male. Just bitter little boys that can't seem to grow up. If Jesus himself were from 008 he would be a target of their venom. We as police have become our own worst enemies. It's time for these "never played team sports" "picked on in high school" "and never had a job before they were the police" whiny babies to take a look in the mirror and see what insignificant pieces of sh** that they really are. They schose this job, it didn't choose them, and if they don't like the 008th district or the bosses or the other P.O.'s then leave. I'm sure we don't want them either. But quit your whiny little bit** moaning, it's getting really old. Godforbid some nutjob, or Hezbollah decides to do some mass shooting at a school or any venue where many people congregate. The PO's, not SWAT, are the first responders.
Not to mention if we need them to defend ourselves. If I am in some gunfight with an offender, getting on the radio and requesting SWAT isn't going to cut it.
I am not going to cut on SWAT, but lets face it, by the time they assemble and get to where they need to be, the fight is over and someone is dead.
Please make this department a PROactive one and pull us out of the dark ages.

As a lifelong Christian (still a practicing Roman Catholic), who has Jewish in-laws. I just want to say that I don't hate you. Every race, nationality and religion has its good people and its bad ones. Yes there are some of us out there who are bigots, but thankfully not as many as there used to be. Thenks for your service, and enjoy your retirment.
Here are some ideas that the new Superintendent can use.
1. Get District law enforcement back to full strength. Sweep 35th & Michigan. You will find lots of dead wood there. Cut some specalized units. Do we really need five platoons of TRU, and so many people in units like Intelligence and NAGIS? Not when the Districts are so short.
2. Have one heavy weapons car per sector on each watch in every District. Let the training be voluntary and difficult(everybody on this job shouldn't be carring heavy weapons), but some day it is going to hit the fan and we are going to need heavy weapons and they won't be there and sad to say I fear some of us will die as a result.
3. Take a long hard look at CAPS. There may be nothing you can do about CAPS because it is the Mayor's baby, but lots of money and manpower are wasted for little return.
4. Do someting about our inadequate equipment. No way should we be running with cars that have over 150,000 miles, ancient non working PDT's, and radios that can't hold a charge for more than 6 hours. Let everyone carry TASERS. Push for the 10 hour day.
5. Get your supervisory ranks up to where they should be. Sergeants can't adequately supervise when there are only two per watch, especially in your faster districts. Push to have adequate supervisors on the street. Not having them is a perscription for trouble.
6. Have the guts to realign beats, close some districts, and open new ones where necessary. Districts that were very busy years ago like 002, 013, 014 and 021 are now basically quiet. Districts like 004,008,and 025, that were quiet years ago are now very busy. Why should 002 comtinue to have 4 beats per sector while districts like 005, that is busy, have only three?
The politicians and the screaming reverands won't like it, but it should be done.
7. Do we really need so many exempts? How about cutting some jobs and positions. (Does your detective division really need three deputy chiefs?) Why do we need a Central Control group? Can't the other areas handle 001 & 018?

Having been brought up Catholic myself.....let me say this to you sir and please do not be offended as it is certainly not intended as an insult but you seem to be the most "Christian" person I have come across lately...By that I mean that you seem to have the values that a Christian is supposed to have but sadly most do not!
Religion (even though I do not actually practice myself) is supposed to encourage and teach goodness and that goes for all religions. I find that people who say and do things in the name of religion are really not religious themselves and are not actually obeying the laws of their own church...For example the muslims have their suicide bombers, the catholices had the IRA and Hitler, the southern christians had the KKK and severe racism. Then of course there is the fake reverands....

I don't think he means you pull a taser when someone has a gun.
There are other situations where you need more than a stcik or spray but maybe less than a gun (guy has a bat, guy has a brick, guy is high on pcp, etc...).

Actually they can get the weapons off of the feds,they have a program where local governments can get military surplus for next to nothing.A couple of years ago the locals could pick up a retired HU1E for a dollar.Seems to me the Fire Commisioner under old man Daley had a small airforce at the late Meigs field including a DH OTTER which was a bush plane,plus his Bell (the MASH kind) choppers.All picked up for next to nothing compliments of Uncle Sam.

Your post is long so I just captioned a piece and here's my response.............I think it is a good thing posting negative things about the 008th district as well it would be for any district having similar problems. I also believe that there should be more posting of positive things too. I will admit that there is alot of juvenile crap posted, but the majority has some truth to it. 008 is out of control because of the east end and who suffers? Pod missions, wolf packing etc etc etc on the east end and who suffers? Back log every day even on a tuesday in the winter? News years eve in 007 was DEAD compared to the nonsense in 008. Tact is useless reguardless, but I will say there are some good people back there. Maybe people need to hear that on new years eve while the district was goin up for grabs there were only 3 tact cars up. Now im not knocking those cars cause they did help and they were appreciated, but the others were supposed to be working till four. Where the hell did the rest of the 3 TEAMS go that were logged on previously?? You have late cars and midnites running around crazy trying to get rid of a stupid backlog so they can go home to their families and you see that these guys get let go 2/3 hours early? Real good for morale huh. Thank god no one was hurt. And why should'nt someone post about the Sgt yelling at a Female PPO to arrest a female subject cause she was getting loud, instead of telling one of his own tact guys or gals to arrest her that were standing right next to her?! Nope, he belittles her, screaming at her, then laughs off to the side like he did something noteworthy or cool. You were an asshole for doing that and trust me it did'nt go un-noticed. How about taking a look in the mirror and wearing the proper uniform jacket instead of your long wool coat cause you looked like a tool. There are alot of hard workers in 008 and they are appreciated, but you also have to understand why would anyone what to be a worker with the way you are treated on this job? Since this is an open post, I would like to ask a question that maybe someone can answer. Every now and then someone refers to Chicago Aldermen being authorized to carry firearms. I have been retired for over 7 years, after 37 years or so of service, and I also heard that referred to many times during my tenure. I am unable to find anything in the Illinois Compiled Statutes or the City Ordinances that give Aldermen this privilege. Peace Officers get their authorization to carry weapons through exemptions in 720 ILCS 5/24-2. This section does not exempt Aldermen. Also the definition of Peace Officer does not include Chicago Aldermen. I can find nothing in the City Ordinances about this, and I am pretty sure that a City Ordinance could not negate a state statute.
Every time this is referred to it is stated as a commonly known fact, and I suspect that it is an old wives tale. I do seem to remenmber that at one time Aldermen were issued some kind of star, but this does not make them Peace Officers as defined in ILCS.
I am not challenging anyone, just curious.
Incidentally, retirement is great, you will enjoy it.
Kudos to 933 am for making good suggestions while some complain about each other like anti-semitism and small flashlights. Must be a northside thing.

Let me add to it, maybe SCC could run a regular post like, if I were the Superintendent. Serious comments and suggestions only, things we talk about among ourselves.

do NOt give anyone in patrol heavy weapons, they are dangerous enough with handguns, and many lack experience on the job, and I don't want to get shot by accident by one of them. If necessary, train all investigative units with additional weapons but not these young Rambo types. I don't think we cvan beat trained terrorists bent on destruction and death anyway, they are the Military's job, and they are quite good at it.

Dear Superintendent Weiss,
If I had your ear for a few minutes I would tell this:
1. Reduce the total number of Department exempt managers by 30%.
2. Provide more leadership training, educational and career opportunities for first line supervisors.
3. Rotate all exempt unit supervisors out of their positions after two years returning them to the patrol division. Every supervisor should have an opportunity to get some experience holding an administrative, gang/tactical, community policing or other special unit position in their career.
4. Reduce sworn personnel assigned to Headquarter functions and use the office space for in-service training. Save the money we don’t need a new academy right now.
5. Revamp the Merit Selection process. Limit one merit promotion below the rank of Captain in a career. Allow for a more transparent selection process that allows all supervisors to submit a merit selection for consideration. Selection can be based on a point system or lottery. Promotional lists are posted for a longer duration (five years).
6. Establish an ordinance requiring all City employees to file a declaration of political, business and nepotism report annually with the Ethics Board.
7. Establish guidelines that prohibit abuse and prosecute violations of # 6.
8. Elected officials should not use police officer(s) as body guards, drivers or gofers. There is no justification for any alderman to have their own personal police officer since they can carry a firearm.
9. Create a volunteer retiree program that allows retired police officers to donate their time and attend CAPS meetings and put the working officers back on the street. Reduce all the overtime spent on the CAPS program for officers who are required to attend on off-duty hours.
10. Faithfully take steps to improve the image and moral of this Department.

Please don't think that this department, your former brothers and sisters in blue are all bigots. There were probably as many haters in your day as there are today, they just didn't have this electronic bathroom wall to spew their hatred and certainly not the balls to say anything to your face.
True Story - A fellow Sgt., who I'd known since we came on the job together, offered to switch days off with me so I could spend X-Mas with my kids. When I asked why he didn't want the day off, he informed me that he was Jewish. I felt like an idiot and wondered how this had never come up in conversation in the 15 + years I had known him.
It goes to show you, you can never know for sure a person's religion, ethnicity and in some cases their race or the race of the person they married. You may just open that big fat mouth and you won't have your computer screen to hide behind. I am just glad I didn't have to worry that I might have ever said anything that would have offended him. This guy is a class act.

Not to many years ago we survived with tazers, without super weapons,without digital radios, we had no computersd in the car or all of this internet crap and without many other creture comforts of modern police person. We also survived without all of the whinning, crying, wrenching of hands and inability for everyone to make a decesion. When todsy's yuppie college educated policepersons do make a decesion it is usually wrong. The problem is they don't know what they are doing, they panic very well. All of their computers aren't going to help, just get them in deeper.
But, they will be praised and cheered by others who themselves don't have a clue.

On Saturday, 08 Jan at 1800 hrs., St Cajetan's Church 2445 W 112th St, will be hosting a mass for military personnel both returning and going to both conflicts (Iraq and Afghanistan). This mass will celebrate the sacrifices of the soldiers and their families, and the outside departments which will be represneted (so far) are---->>NYC Fire Dept, Marine Corps, US Army, US Attorney's office (Pat Fitzgerald himself has confirmed, perr the group's organizer), Illinois State Police, Metra Police, Cook Co Sheriff, Oak Lawn PD, Alsip PD, Merrionette Park PD, and I'm sure more that I am not aware of at this time.
Whatever your position is on any conflicts, we need to turn out to show our gratitude to these soldiers and their families. Please call the 022nd District CAPS Office for further info 312-745-0620.
P.S. There will be a procession eastbound on 111th St from 1730-1745 hours containing police and military vehicles. Two Marine Humvees will be leading the procession, and they will contain a Medal of Honor receipient from World War II now living in Oak Lawn, as well as three servicemen who were badly injured in Iraq. A simple cheer, show of support, would be a great thing for them. C'mon folks, time to step up to the plate.

New Yrs. day. Stopped at the light at Armitage/Western. Gold Acura pulled up. Thought it was 2 bangers. Damn, 2 smiling yuppies pulled up and said, "Happy New Yrs. Officer." Thanked them and they drove off. Couldn't believe it. Felt damn good though. I still miss the knuckle head m/4's spitting.

Couldn't agree with you more. Rabbi Wolfe is THE only CPD chaplain who I see in the station on a regular basis. He is a true-supporter of all police officers, regardless of their religious backgrounds, and always has a kind word (not to mention candy!) I've never ONCE seen Father Nangle in any of the stations I've worked at, and I've been on the job for 9 years.
To the retired Jewish P.O....yes, there are a small handful of cowards who make anti-semitic comments behind your back. But, by and large, when the chips are down, you can count on most of us to see you for who you are...a brother in blue. Thank you for your years of service.

My father, retired CPD, was in the hospital and Father Nagle visited him several times for long periods. I found him to be nothing but a genuine, sincere man. Maybe with all the officers in need of his services he actually can't meet every request. Just a thought.

Alderman can carry because although they are not listed as an exception to the UUW law they are considered peace officers if they go through the training issued by the Illinois training board.
That said, I'd bet the only ones who have been trained are Burke and any other one that was the police for a minute.

Sec. 3.1‑15‑25. Conservators of the peace; service of warrants.
(a) After receiving a certificate attesting to the successful completion of a training course administered by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board, the mayor, aldermen, president, trustees, marshal, deputy marshals, and policemen in municipalities shall be conservators of the peace. How about starting a push for eliminating the 30 % meritorious promotions by the Superintendent? I am on tact in 008. Funny I did not get home newyears day till 5:00 A.M. There were two teams on Western helping 800 as well as midnight coppers. Rumor is what you posted not truth as you tout. I answer many many calls for service and know I am not above any other patrolmen, We are all in the same boat. That being said please dont lie about tact and gangs having only 3 cars up. Get your facts straight.

To the Posters slamming Father Nangle, I must object. My family had a tragedy and the good father helped us in many ways with out going into the details. After all his help I asked if I could buy him dinner, make a donation to St. Michael's House or any other donation to show my families appreciation. The man would not take a cent. He suggested that I use what ever donation I was willing to make to go out to dinner with my family. The man is a prince. Years later had another death in the family and recieved a condolence card from him. In my mind and my families, the man can do nothing wrong.
As for all the other Chaplains, I have only met them at St. Judes, but your service to the members of this department are appreciated. Thanks for all yoour time and effort.

Food for thought, walking the dog the other day, mid-day, spot a m/2 walking my way, obviously a problem-dirty pants,etc. Sure enough..."hey mister can you spare change so I can get home?" I follow him to downtown E.P.,observe him wandering around aimlessly, extremely pissed at this P.O.S. I call 911 and report what happened.No need to tell you what happened...I'm sure 016 p.o.'s made an effort to find him,looked up that there were other calls on this guy later that day.
At Jewel today Harlem/Foster,around 13:00, in the checkout line and there seems to be a problem in front of me... M & F/1 (dressed,spoke,and acted straight out of Madison/Pulaski,13:00? do they have a job?)are having a problem checking out with their LINK!, that's right L-I-N-K !card...once again the blood begins to boil.
My point in these two anecdotes is that I'm begining to question life... I work in the ghetto and do my job as best as I can for "those people" we get little respect,looks of hatred everytime we deal with some, no gratitude when we teach a 18 year old how to raise her kids,second guessed on every decision we make, draw the ire of the reverends and community alike, and I could go on and on.
Now these stories and similar others that I've heard from others in my situation raise the concern that we work in the ghetto trying to make a difference while SOMEONE IS ALLOWING SCUM TO INFILTRATE OUR NEIGHBORHOODS! Now I know it is common knowledge that most harder-working fast district coppers consider 016 a retirement district but these stories beg the question that maybe it's time to put aside the "image" that comes with working in slower districts and start transfering-in, asap and applying some of that hard-working attitude to save our neighborhoods before it's too late. The ghetto scum see's virgin territory in 016, civilians (and many P.O.'s)that are scared to confront them for fear of violence,or being called a racist (personal experience has shown that nothing scares/confuses a black thug more than a White person who is not afraid of them and willing to confront them) This fear from many residents allows these scum (BLACK ,HISPANIC, AND WHITE!)to establish their presence unchecked...ultimately putting our families, homes,and safety in danger-majority of residents at work while these P.O.S. wander our neighborhoods begging-and who knows what else?.
I know there are many reasons ghetto coppers stay where we stay,I share many of these, but maybe we should re-consider. Let's honor what we hear everyday from ghetto residents..."why don't you go police yo own neighborhoods and get some black officers to patrol our neighborhood?"
By honoring that request we might actually stem the tide and keep OUR neighborhoods OURS!
In the interim... 016 district officers, PLEASE focus on the north end, much of the south and east ends are lost causes (manpower shortages anyone?) Final story...over summer witnessed a HUGE fight(15-20 people) outside of Nick's, saw many bystanders calling 911,over 15 minutes for first car to arrive... it was 1630 in the Tahoe and a Park Ridge unit-both 10-99!took another few minutes for other squads to arrive. I've gotten to "a hundred" people fighting calls in the ghetto faster...and I don't give a shit if they all KILL eachother or destroy the shithole they live in.!

The training board (Tobias or whoever has that slot represents the Super on that board) has a policy statement that for aldermen to carry, they have to complete the training - as in the 400 hour training course at the academy. (The legislation doing that was passed by Dudycz in 1997 or so.)
Specifically, at page two of three for http://www.ptb.state.il.us/pdf/auxiliary.pdf
the board has stated:
"Any person designated as a conservator of the peace must complete the full basic
law enforcement training program as specified in Section 7 of the Illinois Police
Training Act."
Most aldermen won't do that, Chicago or Peoria or any other little burg (Dixmoor to Cairo, Westville to New Canton). Now, as retired law enforcement, they can carry under federal law. And that's another story.

If you read my post I said that there were tac cars out there helping and I wasnt slammin them. They were GREATLY APPRECIATED! and if you were one then, THANKYOU. By the way, 5am is probaly the longest you've been past your reg time other than a late arrest in awhile so dont expect anyone to feel sorry for you. Second....the broad was gettin mouthy after she was removed from garage and continued to be mouthy not only in front of the PPO, but also 3 to 4 of said Sgts Team members. She wasnt pushing the PPO around and Sgt yelled numerous times to LOCK HER UP!! My question was why did'nt direct HIS team lock her up?? They were standing right by her. I know why, that means that THEY would have to miss out on leaving early. Explain to me if he was so serious about teaching her a lesson was it really necesary for him to scream at her like he did then laugh off to the side with the Lt like he proved something? Whats the lesson there? How big of a jagg he looked like? Thats the one I got. And your comment about answering calls for service...which ones, the gang disturbances or man with a knife or the narc sales? You wanna really help out?? then start with the fucking backlog and help clear out the jobs for a start like all the other teams in the city do. Yeah you guys really help out on a daily basis....bullshit. Squad we on viewed this, need a paper car, squad we on viewed that...paper car. We know you guys arent allowed do go west but at least you can help with the backlogs like the ones we were in almost every day in the spring and summer. Not to hard to ask for huh. Remember, yellin at a fellow PO is not the way to help someone whether you are a boss or not Especially like he did. Try speaking to that person like an adult, off to the side and away from everyone else if you truly want to teach a lesson. If the scene does not permit like the one where this incident happened (extremely bad weather and unruley crowd), then in the station would do just fine. Stay safe my friend whomever you are.

If my post bothers you then.... well... dont read it and quit worrying about what I post. Maybe you should worry about doing your job whatever it is you do goof. When a district is in a backlog constantly with no help from their "other" district officers who are well and quite able to help out, then yeah, seeing that on new years eve that many cars gone while in a backlog does make you kinda pissed off especially when they havent even completed their tour. It happens all the time too during the summer and spring or for any time as a matter of fact when we are in a back log. How arrogant are you to say that's ok? Quit worry about everyone else? why? what's right is right and whats wrong is wrong. How about you spending less time doin your job, being a stroke.

There are plenty of great coppers in 016 especially on afternoons...they work hard and many are from working districts or units...Midnights are a different story...lots of lazy coppers and some good ones but the good are FAR outnumbered by the lazy ones...Days is good too....they do a fine job as well...06 car on days is good...Tact teams in 016 need to learn how to do police work there are a few good coppers on the teams there but need to learn how to work as a tact team...catch burglars...research where the thefts/burglaries are happening and then set up surveillances in those areas etc....thats what a good tact team does..The Gang teams in 016 are ok....they have many young guys who need to toughen up and learn to be the police too...they need good leadership and sergeants with good experience to do the job too.There is one team that has a couple of guys from another district...I think 15 or 14 assigned there because nobody wants to work on the Gang team...thats sad!! I was working last week when a car from the watch brought in something like 10 heads for minor drinking and the gang team was "asked" to help process the arrests and a particular officer (MM) was throwing a fit..saying how he was "Not doing anything" to the Sgt and "fuck this...I should be in bed at 0100,I ain't doing anything"..The Sgt...who is a great guy asked this officer several times to please help process the arrests and the officer continued to say he's not doing anything!! Can you believe that??!! The Sgt finally ordered the officer to process the prisoners and then he shut his big yap! The Sgt should have gotten a CR# on his lzay ass and went to the Commander to get his ass thrown off the team...he doesn't deserve to be there at all!! If I ever told my Sgt that I wasn't doing something...my ass would be flying back to the watch!! But not these days or not in 016.The Sgt is filling in for another Sgt and the guy used extreme restraint and patience....The Sgt should be running a tact or gang team because He knows how to work and works harder than most people in the district or on the tact teams!! The guy is constantly making traffic stops or street stops and responds to jobs and helps out...I wish others took notice and followed his lead...the district would be a better place and safer for all who live here.
