Shades of Things to Come?

After all, our leadership has stolen every other bright idea out of New York and destroyed it:
  • The increasingly diverse NYPD wants to get a little more uniform: Cops have been told to say goodbye to their goatees, chin strap beards and designer hair affectations more suitable for, well, designers.

[...] The department also allows officers to grow beards if they suffer from Pseudofolliculitis barbae, a dermatological condition better known as PFB that is common among black men and afflicts those who shave with rashes and scarring, mostly on and under their chins, as well as on their cheeks and necks.

But according to a recent memo circulated throughout the department, officers with such clearance do not have carte blanche to let their hair down, so to speak.

We expect a whole bunch of memos on this and other things very very shortly. After all, there are a shitload of people downtown that suddenly have to justify their existence.

Wow, the Chicago Defender is a legit news source....NOT..their lead story at their website for International news is still from June 7, 2007 reagrding South Korea nukes...the story is over 6 months old and still their only International story.

I guess the only thing those haters can report on is police brutality.

In Chicago that is called razor burn, and one throws some aftershave on and gets the fcuk on with their day without crying to their dermatologist.

Why are we the SECOND city?

I am all in favor of tightening up on uniform appearence. Too many of us look like bums. Take some pride in the way you look. Cut your hair and shave when you need it. Keep your uniform clean and your shoes shined. You don't see suburban coppers or State Troopers that look like slobs, so why should we. Enforce the rules fairly and across the board and you shouldn't have any problems. Oh, by the way, I am an old timer (26years on) and work a beat car in a district.

in my humble opinion uniformed and most C/D officers should have their faces cleanly shaven.

Unless they have a legit skin condition or their undercover assignment dictates the wearing of facisl hair

This would include both genders

SCC, I know it was decided not to say much about the police shooting in 011 last week to see how the new policy of not saying anything to the media to keep them from blowing things out of proprtion worked pretty well, but how about a follow up based on the fact the states attorney refused to charge the offender. It was a blink and you'll miss it article in the tribune a few days ago.

No more prisoner transport vans….district lock-ups will be equipped with a fleet of limousines that will transport our med students to court in the luxury and comfort they so deserve.

No more blue roof lights and/or sirens….this is just to disturbing to our citizens, instead, all officers will, when responding to an emergency call, exit their vehicle at intersections and ask the other drivers very politely to please get out of their way. If they refuse….officers will immediately kneel and plead for compliance.

Forget about buying new battries for our radios. All officers will be taught the skill of morse code. OEMC will install windows in its super duper modern facility and dispatchers will simply view the signals that will be emitted from each officer's blinking flashlight. Each officer will have 10 support vans that will follow them throughout their tour with ample supplies of flashlight battries.

Cell phones will not be allowed or carried…from now on officers will use telepathy to notify AREA detectives of the alleged and untrue crimes of our stellar med students and alter boys.

And criticism of that specialized unit that has drained all and everything out of each and every district, that I won't mention but rhymes with zoo will not be tolerated. The 3 officers that are currently left in the patrol division will immediately respond to every request, wish and/or whim of this specialized unit whose name I won't mention, but rhymes with ewwww.

Lastly,no more overtime...mom and dad said we have to complete our tour of duty before the street lights go on.

Even though this is not the pension post it is the latest so I hope this will stay fresh it people's head

Quote from the articel on the CTA spending:

"We're making sure folks know this is a tax paying for pensions. ... It won't put another train on the tracks or another bus on the street," said Brian Bernardoni, director of government affairs for the Realtors group.

Get ready boys and girls, people are already starting in the papers about taxess paying for pension in reagrds to the CTA. Just wait until something like this comes along for the police and fire.

Also, if anyone has any info on the concession that the CTA union agreed too, please post. From what I heard, and do not know if it true, is that the Union agreed to a two tear system.

Please post info and stay informed

Working 21+ yrs, all in a district on the street, I agree. The uniform & appearance standards have been virtually ignored the last several years. About 15 yrs ago, I had a great W/C who would go to bat for anyone and he had 2 requirements. Be on time for roll-call, and look sharp. After all, his feeling was with the uniform allowance we get, we should buy a couple new pair of pants if we need them. All too often these days you see the beards, corn rows, earrings and the long painted fingernails. Not saying the department should go ape shit, but if everyone looked at themselves in the mirror, we could fix it ourselves. If not, let the "uniform police" fix it.

I agree in looking good when you police, but keep in mind we are the real police and are constantly working, yes even sometimes in 016. I disagree with belittling officers at role call over small shit, because guess what, you won't get shit from those officers for a while. I do very much agree that we need more physical agility qualifications. If you are a fat ass or out of shape, not because of some medical condition, but because you are just lazy, then something needs to be done. If you don't do it for yourself, do it for your family, who would like you to be around more than 2 years after you retire. As a proud department member, it is more embarrassing to see some fat ass getting out of the car, or trying to take control of a situation, than it is to see a physically fit officer with a open cuff case. Be safe out there and watch each others backs...

MAN GETS 5 YEARS IN JAIL FOR..... KILLING TREES!!!!

LAS VEGAS - Residents of an upscale retirement community near here knew Douglas Hoffman was upset that trees were blocking his backyard view of the Strip.

But at a hearing Monday, where Hoffman was sentenced to up to five years in prison for killing more than 500 trees, a prosecutor said the retired construction worker had threatened to unleash "chemical, biological, nuclear mass destruction" because of it.

Dressed in jail garb and handcuffed to his wheelchair, Hoffman, 61, slumped and lowered his eyes when Judge Donald M. Mosley announced his sentence.

Too bad Command Personnel let the dept. slide into some misfits.they can't blame the troops.
The reason for the roll calls, is to check the troops out so they comply withDept. G/O. Its evident that its been so lax for so long that its become the standard to do what you want to do.
Its going to be damn possible now that you may have an Inspector at the roll Calls and its possible that the WC had better shape the troops up or he will be gone along with the Comdr.
This is what happens to an organization when you have incompetence at the top,its sort of like the plumbing business, all you have to know is SHIT RUNS DOWN HILL AND PAYDAY IS ON FRIDAY.
Too bad, the Dept. was so good at one time.

I really hope uniform and appearence will be enforced around here. Everybody with their bull-shit bump cards needs to be looked into a little more. Guys who never had a problem shaving before all of the sudden have a skin problem and need a bump card so they can be cool and grow a beard. The cornrows and braids are a friggin disgrace, yet supervisors are scared to say anything. General Orders and numerous country-wide court rulings have upheld a department enforcing grooming / haircut standards. You never see suburban or state cops look as shitty as we do.

At the Philadelphia Police Dept., a female Muslim P/O sued the City and has appealled a ruling that has prevented her from wearing that stupid Muslim head scarf.

All I can say is that I hope she loses, but she'll have some ammunition, as some Black males are allowed to have beards because of PFB. From what I understand though, a doctor's note has to be provided (which I'm sure are easy enough to obtain).

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've read on Domelights, Philly's semi-version of SCC, about officers out of uniform: dreads, Mickey Mouse socks (or was it a raincoat or umbrella?), a male in the elite Highway Patrol Unit with earrings in both ears, and the list goes on.

I think it's disgraceful that some P/O's think they can wear whatever they want and refuse to follow the UNIFORM directives that were handed down by the PPD. It makes them look unprofessional, and it's an embarrassment to the entire PPD, especially to the officers that do take pride in the uniform and how they look.

Not that it's worth anything, but there's my $.02.

"You don't actually feel this tax until you buy or sell something. ... If it's going to help the CTA and help seniors get free rides, it should be an easy" vote, Munoz said."

Sorry but I'm fucking pissed. This ignorant Latin King has the stones to say it's ok to increase a tax to 40%, because it involves a voluntary transaction. FROM THE FILES OF "AN ARMED ROBBER WITH NO BALLS!":

KOKOMO, Ind. — A man accidentally shot himself in the groin as he was robbing a convenience store, police said.

A clerk told police a man carrying a semiautomatic handgun entered the Village Pantry Tuesday morning demanding cash and a pack of cigarettes. The clerk put the cash in a bag and as she turned to get the cigarettes, she heard the gun discharge.

Surveillance video shows the man shooting himself as he placed the gun in the waistband of his pants, police said. The clerk wasn't injured.

A short time later, police found 25-year-old Derrick Kosch at a home with a gunshot wound to his right testicle and lower left leg. He was expected to have surgery at a hospital.

Police plan to charge him with armed robbery.

And you wonder why some women shouldn't be allowed to breed:

INDIANAPOLIS — Police searched Tuesday for two men believed to have run from a home where two women and their two children were fatally shot.

Officers arrived on the city's north side late Monday night to investigate a report of shots fired. Inside the home, they found 4-month-old Charlii Yarrell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, along with the bodies of her mother, Andrea Yarrell, Gina Hunt, both 24, and Hunt's 23-month-old son Jordan Hunt.

Charlii Yarrell later died at a hospital.

The children were shot in their mothers' arms and all were wounded multiple times, said Indianapolis police Assistant Chief Eva Talley-Sanders.

"I can't imagine what kind of evil it takes to shoot two women and the innocent children in their arms," said police Chief Michael Spears at a Tuesday news conference.

Witnesses told police they saw two men running from the home.

Two handguns were found within a block of the house, where the four who were slain lived, said police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount. A set of scales, several weapons, a safe and one pound of a what is believed to be marijuana were found in the house, Talley-Sanders said.

The FBI announced Tuesday it will assist Maywood police with the investigation of the 2006 slaying of Officer Thomas Wood, the first officer killed in that suburb's history.

Wood, 37, was found shot multiple times in his marked police sport-utility vehicle at the end of his watch on the night of Oct. 23, 2006, at 6th Avenue and Erie Street. Wood was found slumped over his steering wheel, with his window rolled down, his truck in park and his police dog inside, unharmed.

He was pronounced dead a short time later at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Seriously, people need to stop crying and bitching over all of these minor changes (i.e. clean shave, a pressed uniform, clean shoes, roll call inspection, etc...). We are officers and need to act and dress like professionals. For too long, we have had officers who look like slobs. With Jody in charge, all of that will soon end. I envision a new department that means business. I am glad that we have a new boss who will clean things up.

OFF TOPIC:

Just thought everyone should be aware that Toddler Stroger doesn't care about the Suffredin/Beavers anti-gun ordinances that could cost Illinois and Cook County millions in tax revenues. I called his office to inquire where he stands on the ordinance and was rudely told by an employee of the office that "he has nuthin to do wit dat" and "it's not his problem"

I say flood all their offices with calls.

Stroger 312-603-6400

Suffredin 847-864-1209

Beavers 773-731-1575

It's hard to believe that Beavers was once a brother in blue.

I guess you lose all rational when you enter into politics and have to sell your soul to get ahead.

Why any guy has a 1/8th of an inch wide beard is beyond me. I always thought it looked compleely stupid. And you know any guy spending that much time with his facial hair is doing the metrosexual designer personal hair body grooming too. VERY very very strange! Brother, I can tell you countless stories about the 19th district day captain and her weapon. It was usually rolling around the floor of her unmarked when she was a youth Lt. Also could be found in an unlocked locker at the local gym while working out on duty. Oh yeah, sometimes it was found laying around the women's bathroom at the Area. What JP needs to address within his first month is to take away the marked squad from 1108.
Please tell us why this crossing guard supervisor needs a marked squad. She drives it thru red lights, does all her personal errands in it and, takes the keys home with her. She is not a sworn officer and there is no logical reason for her to drive a marked unit. Take your personal car or jump on the bus.
We can free up a car for answering calls since we are 5 cars due to fleet managements incompetence.

TWO BILLION IN COST FOR OLYMPICS

Chicago Olympics officials today revealed that a 2016 Summer Games held here would require some $900 million in venue construction, most of it, they said, paid for with private funds and games revenues. That number does not include the $1.1 billion previously estimated as the cost to build an Olmypic Village for housing athletes near McCormick Place.

They should start with making officers stay in some physical shape, no offense but it's a shame how many of you guys are totally out of shape and really need to be in some gym rather on the force. In the service we have to stay in tip top shape or they get rid of us especially once our stomachs hang lower than our knees

-----

Well, well, well...

Two years and two weeks have gone by since we lost our brother Jim. On 4 January, was there so much as a mention of his passing at ANY rollcall? No.

Was there a department notice? No.

A to/from from the bosses? No.

January 4th was just another day to come and go. A few pinches, a few admin tows, a few bullshit premise check CR's and thats all folks.

We still do not have him memorialized in the glass case that is in the lobby at the square.

This is truely some sorry shit.

Palcu are you paying attention?

Probably not.

I disagree with belittling officers at role call
************************
So do I, but if you are having inspection and they don't pass, it is incumbent upon the inspecting supervisor to note the deficiency in an objective professional manner... in other words stating, to the member in question, quietly, "Your name tag is missing" or whatever.. is appropriate, any loud, joking berating of officers at roll call is inappropriate at best. The whole idea of inspecting the troops is to note any deficiencies in uniform/appearance and ensure they are corrected...
I also think that if there is a deficiency, the officer should be informed of it and given an opportunity to correct it. If the officer then fails to correct it, at that time, some further action by the supervisor may be necessary..

Are you serious? How fucking stupid was this guy? Nobody else on the street and he's screaming down 76th Avenue because he's late for roll call. And 500 other people drove that road that morning and none of them ended up dead. It's sad, but what the fuck. Most of those sheriff's are more like Barney Fife than legitimate police. Shit, they can't even keep offenders from running out of the courthouse. Happens all the time. Someone will break loose in court and run through the whole building past twenty or thirty officers. It's a laughing stock. Nine times out of ten they only catch someone because there's Chicago PO's in building. All the sheriff's do all day is smoke. There's one white shirt that looks like he's nine months pregnant and going to have a heart attack any minute. And they are so self-important! One white shirt bitch walks around all day ending every sentence with "rank has it's privileges." I'd hate to have to work for any of them. Lazy pathetic political hacks.

I too am glad that 500 or 500 other people didnt end up dead. That is nice. What about the emotional trauma that I and the 10-15 other coppers that showed up on the scene endured seeing our friend torn up like that?

It's really not that hard. Hey granted we all have busy lives but for the time it takes to stop by the local bar or the time it takes to kill a six pack one can easily jog a mile or two per day.... hell every other day for that matter .... even once or twice a week or lift weights or something to maintain some type of physical shape or health. It shouldn't be incorporated into work schedule it should be done on one's own personal time granted they still want to remain employed.. just a thought like I said no offense but I can never forget the day when I was a juvenile years back over in the dearborn homes when I outran an officer that was trying to chase me and he was so close but couldn't keep up because he was so overweight.. I could literally hear him wheezing behind me while in chase.

Trouble with uniforms now is NO-ONE
knows what goes with what. Can I wear my Corframs with the cargo pants? How about a dickie with a short sleeve shirt? Chukka boots with my reefer? Baseball hat with 80/20's? and that STUPID knit hat, that if you wear it right, you have mickey mouse ears?
They blew it with 3+ different classes of uniforms. Bring back my shiny IKE jacket..Now that's cool.

I am glad that we have a new boss in town who won't take shit. Everyone should take pride in their appearance and have their uniform pressed, neat and together. Compare Chicago cops to other cops like the state troopers and you will see the difference. Thank God that Jody is going to clean up all of this nonsense. Having shiny shoes, a clean appearance and a pressed uniform makes us look professional and also it intimidates the bad guys too.

They cant ban the leather jacket from details. When I came on it was part of the uniform. They would have to pay for first issue of that nifty jacket and I really dont see them doing that.

1/15/2008 10:49:00 PM

Moron here. For the record and in defense of the REAL police, I am not a cop, just someone familiar with the situation. And I'm not flaming the dead. I am addressing your ridiculous attempt to frame his demise in a more attractive light. 1. He did not die in the line of duty. 2. He had the accident because he was chronically late for work and that is where he was headed when he met his maker. The reason, imho, that nobody has made a big deal out of this is because it was a totally preventable death and people (while they may not say it to your face, his friends or family) is that his behavior and judgement was inconsistent with a police officer, first responder, etc. It never should have happened. 3. If you're traumatized, get some counseling through the department. And as Jim Morrison said..."keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel." Good advice for blowjobs AND avoiding driving under semi's.

Like it or not the crossing guard supervisor is a supervisor assigned to the district. They may not be the police but they are supervisors assigned to the district, just like the district manager and the chief engineer. The only difference is that the crossing guard supervisor gets to drive a marked squad car and talks on the police radio.

Hey, to the guy who says it's so easy to keep in shape, I've been at this 22 years. From my sports days, long, long, long ago, I have no knees left. I tore my rotator cuff tackling a car thief and never made an IOD because it didn't start hurting for three days..Yea, I know, yadda, yadda, yadda about an IOD afterwards.. Either way, I'm a single parent who needs to work over time and part time and can't afford medical or IOD, so no surgery on shoulder. My elbows click and hurt like a mother every time I do a push up. Hey, but I still recently caught a seventeen year old in an all out sprint and no he wasn't 400 lbs or a double amputee.
So it ain't so easy for all of us..

Who cares what the order says, Pat Hill set a precedent when she took the city to court over her dreadlocks and she won! If you are ever taken to task over your "locks" contact Attorney Joe Roddy he represented her and won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry to all of you who don't like "locks" I do as long as they are neat. I have seen plenty of officers with them and their appearance commanded more respect than officers with stupid crew cuts.

The dread appearance commands respect? Good God, what are you smoking?

It looks so unprofessional and I'd have a hard time taking any officer serious at all, especially with dirty dreads that are could be infested with lice (hey, it happens!).

The crew cut is paramilitary, which most PD's follow. THAT, and impeccable dress appearance commands respect - not some dirty, nappy hairstyle that someone wears only to defy what they're supposed to do.

It's not just NYPD or Chicago that have these issues. Phiily's got them as well, and I'm sure there are many other big city PD's that deal with this. I just wonder how they deal with the situation. Is it a lose - lose situation for every big city?

It's a shame directives, rules, etc. can't be enforced because you've got people who sue and break these rules, and the liberals just allow it.

When does someone say enough is enough?

It's nice to know that you are the arbiter of the "proper" hairstyles for African-Americans. Perhaps you could also suggest skin-treatments that would lighten the complexions of those with hues you've determined to be "too dark" to command respect as well.

As I understand it, hair texture is a genetically determined trait--like skin color. Therefore, the department has no business determining what kind of hair is "proper" for it's officers to have. This would explain Pat Hill's court victory over those in the Chicago Police department's command structure who would have raised no objection at all had she opted to use chemical straighteners in her hair to mimic the [proper?] hair of Caucasians.

Your argument is without merit Kateykakes and is inherently racist.

Coldcase,

I told you what the rules were on MY site, and if you can't play by them, oh, well, too bad. I get the last word. You're now history there.

I don't need someone telling me how they think I feel. When I said my comments here had NOTHING to do with racism, I meant it. Some people can think past color, but apparently you can't.

My opinion remains the same. I think the dread locks look unprofessional, whether a white person or a black person wears them.

And to respond to one of your comments on my site, you're right - if it came down to an officer saving my life, the dreads wouldn't come into play, and I would still thank him/her because I would be forever grateful.

BTW, here in Upper Darby, which is right outside of Philadelphia, the officers take pride in how they look, and Superintendent Chitwood would NEVER allow the dreads, males with earrings, facial hair or any of the other bullshit that is overlooked by some big city depts unless it was an undercover narcotics officer.
