Worst Case Scenario

We've noticed that the Department is sending out people to the Districts again preaching the virtues of safe vehicle operation. Part of this is because of the no pool car situation that comes from the City not paying it's bills and we have to drive whatever is available. Another part is that there are no cars on order for the 2008 budget year (if the rumors are to be believed).

Another part is this:
  • A sheriff's deputy who drove through a red light with his emergency lights and sirens on has been charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle after he hit another car, killing a woman.

Portage County Sheriff's Deputy Ken Tschudy, 53, faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison after an investigation concluded he failed to slow down before speeding into an intersection Oct. 29.

He struck the vehicle of 18-year-old Mindy Erickson, who was killed.

Tschudy had been responding to a hit-and-run accident in Plover when he drove through a red light with his emergency lights and sirens activated.

Responding to a hit-and-run. He's 53 years old. If he gets convicted, where does he start over? His life is over. And if he gets off, he still killed an 18 year old girl. For a traffic accident.

Boys and girls cut the being in a hurry! I was driving with my wife tonight on cicero near 55th street when an unmarked came flying around the corner going eastbound on 55th street with lights blaring, slippery out sure looked like commander ric flair from 008 in a hurry then crossed R/R tracks with gates down right in front of a train hope he was going to a 10-1 but then again if it is a boss they are above the law!

Spoke to a p/o at a wake up in 017, and found out that they have plenty of bodies to man the cars on all watches (even all 2 man units) but they cannot get pool cars.

In 004, they have no bodies, but plenty of down cars just sitting and waiting for manpower. 1st watch works with only a couple of 1-man units and 1 sgt. for the dist.

Maybe 35th st needs to distribute the bodies evenly, especially in the high crime areas.

As soon as a ppo gets off probation, they want to go to special units, or their clout has them moved to a cushy unit/assignment.

The new kids should work a dist. for at least 5 years before they go anywhere to actually learn the job right.

Officers, this is your wake-up call. Use sound judgement when responding to your calls. Although I'm sure this Deputy regrets it, someone's child is dead due to his negligence.
One minute of poor judgement; a lifetime of pain to deal with.
Even if he beats the case, there will be a 7 figure settlement.
And who among us wants to carry the results of this lapse in judgement around forever?

I thought there were laws in place that allowed for PO's not to be procecuted criminally for acts that are done within the scope of the law, albiet negligently, when responding to emergency calls.
I mean.. if you shoot at an armed offender and miss and grandma down the street gets hit, doesnt the criminal, if caught, still get charged since it was his actions that caused the discharge of your firearm?

When the police ran EMMD there were always 25 marked pool cars and 10 unmarked pool cars available at each of the four police garages at any given time. New cars were a line item in every yearly budget. What is being experienced now is the result of the fleet management take over of the four garages that was engineered by Mike Picardi and his jag off lackey Glenn Tatara.

Just imagine responding to an emergency call and you're working at the traffic congested Districts (i.e. 18th, 001st) where some of these ignorant people don't know what to do when an emergency vehicle is closely approaching them. They (civialians) don't slow down or even pull to the right. Why? Because they are too busy talking on their fucking cell phone or just don't give a fuck about the police. 10-1 will be the only reason I will activate lights and siren. The rest could screw themselves. I won't risk losing my freedom nor my properties because some idiots don't pay attention when they're on the road..

...At least we have money for C.P.I.C. the DOC and other unnecessiary nonsense.

Your blue collar mentality is showing, figure it out these special units exist due to Federal funds specifically for those units.

When you go to TARA the feds pay for your time at TARA as well as for the PO who gets OT to fill your spot.

The PO's at CPIC, TARA etc are being covered by the feds (Homeland Security grants).

The city has money budgeted for these POs (TARA, CPIC)but they don't have to spend it because the fed is covering their salaries.

What should upset POs is :where is the money going if the fed is paying the salary for 30 CPIC, 20 TARA officers, etc. The money budgeted for those officers is being spent somewhere else instead of replacing them on the streets.

HELL, BOYS AND GIRLS HER'S AN EXAMPLE CLOSER TO HOME INVOVING ISP TROOPER YESTERDAY NEAR ST. LOUIS....
News-Democrat

BELLEVILLE --Two Collinsville sisters who were killed in November when an Illinois State Police cruiser hit their vehicle died as a result of reckless homicide, a St. Clair County coroner's jury ruled Wednesday morning.

Later in the morning, ISP internal affairs investigators probing the fatal Nov. 23 crash asked State's Attorney Robert Haida to seek reckless homicide charges against trooper Matt Mitchelll, Haida said.

Haida said he must review evidence in the case before deciding whether to seek charges against Mitchell, 29, a six-year ISP veteran.

Mitchell's 2006 ISP Impala was traveling at 126 mph when he lost control of the vehicle at about noon on Nov. 23, crossing the Interstate 64 median near Shiloh and slamming into the car driven by Jessica Uhl, 18, and Kelli Uhl, 13, according to testimony given by an ISP accident reconstructionist.

Slow down boys and girls. Especially with the unmarked cars that only have them F'cking wig wags on the front lights. It's bad enough when Mr. citizen sees blue lights they don't slow down or stop. Whan they can hardly see you at all they just keep on going. Remember with the heat and radio on in their car the only thing that warns them is the lights and most unmarked cars don't have anything but wigwags. Better to get to the call a little slower than not getting there at all.

I just read the story on a website. He was going to assist another officer who was chasing a guy who fled from an accident scene. Crash investigators said that both his and the victim's views were most likely obstructed. Therefore neither were able to see each other until it was too late. With that being said he still gets charged. I thought our State's attorneys' office was bad! I don't mean any disrespect to the victim or her family. Its a tragic accident. But only an accident. Maybe they should eliminat the take home car. Why should someone have a car that sits infront of thier house most of the time when patrol doen't even have cars to answer calls of service.

Ever since the great manager our mayor gave the police fleet to the fleet management, we have seen a decline in pool vehicles and the overall quality of service of Dept. Vehicles. The last two real police commanders of Motor Maintenance cared about pool cars for patrol and had the right point of view about specialized bunk units patrol came first.

If a CPD vehicle does not function properly(ex. no turn signal) then down it. Do not drive a vehicle that will not pass ALL of the safety measures that the state mandates.

its really crazy...imagine a domestic call you show up late and victim is dead. Because now you dont want to get in accident on the way to a call. ????????????????????????????

Relax.

Just write "Homicide" in box 1 instead of "Battery."

What are you all worked up about.
They were killing each other before you got on the job, and they'll be killing each other long after you leave.

Relax. Slow down. You'll live longer.

Your right! is it to much to ask for a car without bald tires, with brakes that work, and with functioning equipment? Fleet management has no mechanics only parts changers who now dur to daley/picardi have no parts on hand to replace anything! detroit has cars with holes in the floors we are stedaily catching up! maybe we should use mass transit to get to our calls at least the busses seem to run!

The guys/gals with the take home cars aren't the problem, Francis!
It's all you 26 to 32 year old "vundercops" who can't steer yourselves clear of stationary (and usually concrete) objects!
Slow down...drive carefully! The lights and sirens are NOT a license to be reckless! Hell, you should all want to come in at the end of the day without a doctor's release folded up in your hats.

1/24/2008 08:15:00 PM............................I'll bet if that was your daughter/sister/girlfriend that deputy numbnuts plowed into you'd feel different.

I'll bet if it's your wife/daughter/sister screaming for help because she's getting raped and beaten, you'd feel different if I go 30mph and obey every traffic law in the book. IF YOU WEREN'T THERE, DON'T JUDGE.
