More Bad Pension News

  • In ominous news for taxpayers, the fiscal difficulty continues to worsen at pension funds that cover Chicago and other government workers in the metropolitan area.

The area’s 10 big government pension funds now face $18.7 billion in unfunded liabilities, according to a report released Monday morning by the Civic Federation, a watchdog group. The deficit is more than five times the figure of just a decade ago, and about six times the size of the city’s annual operating budget.

Taxpayers ultimately are on line for the $18.7 billion unless benefits and other costs are cut and/or new revenues are found.

No wonder these assholes want to ban all guns. Once everyone figures out how much taxes are going to go up to pay for these shortfalls.... well, we'll let your imagination take hold. We know which side we'll be rooting for.

Someone really ought to look into taking all the money Daley steals when he sells City assets (Midway, parking garages, Skyway) and dumping it into pensions.

doesn't 18 BILLION seem alittle high? How many people work for the local G anyway??

Couple suggestions:

1.) if you are a Sgt you get Sgt pension--NOT DEPUTY CHIEF pension.

2.) Daley's nephews and cousins and buddies should stop doing land speculations with our pension.

OFF TOPIC:
POSSIBLE OFFICER SAFETY ALERT.

DATELINE:
CHICAGO RIDGE, ILLINOIS.

This may seem like I'm being paranoid but the following is true:

On Sunday morning, I worked out at the X-Sport gym in Chicago Ridge, Illinois. As I'm driving home, I notice that my driver's side wiper blade is out of whack. It seems that someone gave it a good yank (similar to breaking the seal on a lug nut) which caused it to go out of alignment. When I got home, I grabbed a wrench and tightened it back down. Problem solved. Right?

Tonight, I'm back at X-Sport. I'm driving a different vehicle this time. As I drive home I observe that my driver's side wiper blade is out of whack. I'll have to fix it in the morning.

What the fuck is going on? I'm quite certain that I didn't piss off anybody. I'm also pretty sure that nobody is following me and watching me come and go. What are the odds that the driver's side wiper blade on two different vehicles would get messed up on consecutive days.

What's common here? Location and the fact that both vehicles have F.O.P. stickers on them.

Given the fact that X-Sport has a high volume of walking IR numbers coming and going, I'd guess that someone is fucking with cars bearing police emblems and/or decals.

This type of tampering can be done quickly (just be walking by and giving the wiper blade a good yank) and without detection. The effect is not immediately noticiable either. It would be a bad thing if you were on the expressway and needed to use your wiper blades when you realize that someone fucked with them.

Again, it may seem like I'm being paranoid but I think that there is enough circumstantial evidence to raise a red flag or two.

If anyone knows of shit like this going on please respond.

Thanks and be safe out there.

BLAME THE HAIR GEL! what a pathetic joke that is. Actually, since I have 7 years on I am very glad the average cop expires not long after retirement. See, right now there is a HUGE influx in the numbers of retirees. Once they (baby boomers) die off the pension will be just fine. I keep in good health. I have an education (studies show us educated live longer...sorry dummies) so that helps ALOT! I dont eat out at Jimmys 3 times a week. I have a gym membership that I actually use. I am happily married and have put the ghetto life behind me and am now relaxing in 019... and I dont go to Augies 5 times a week after work and wonder why my wife has left me (but fuck it... I have a good girl and she's REALLY the one!) Im not miserable in every facet of life... I will live long, and those of you italian beef suckin, thrice divorced, alcohol challenged irish pricks... well, you are a part of my retirement plan and funded pension so THANK YOU keep living it up! My pension will be JUST FINE! And when you see my name in the FOP letter (which a majority of you reading this WONT) It will be in about 55 years... but enjoy the lifestyle! live it up, boys!

I have been hearing recent rumors that CPD employees that were working in a similar capacity in county/municipality "law enforcement" jobs before working for CPD may be able to buy that time back at a discounted rate. Does anyone know of this scam?

Buying into a severely under funded pension at a discounted rate? At a time when our pension needs individuals to be sticking around a bit longer these former crook county screws (not law enforcement by the way) and make believe suburban cops can fuck us out of pension dues at a discounted rate???

Has the FOP been made aware of this? If you wanted time in service, you should have stayed with your former department! You voluntarily left to take a job with CPD. You VOLUNTARILY left knowing your pension would start over. You were paid out Im certain.

I personally will be writing letters to the FOP voicing my opposition against this measure. I URGE any of you who care about your pension to ask questions and do the same!

I wish I could pay into my pension at a DISCOUNTED RATE but guess what... I CANT! And neither should you! Shame on you lazy fucks for wanting to exploit the other members of your union... SHAME ON YOU!

This move divides our union, and is a serious matter! I will be keeping everyone up to speed, as I follow and protest this to the end! If you pricks want to buy in AT FULL VALUE OF A YEARS PENSION then I would say you have a leg to stand on. But wouldnt that ring true for the former teacher? The former laborer? Or anyone that was involved in a pension before this job? I think it is a position that you VOLUNTARILY entered into. And if MY union is involved in this, it a waste of resources, time and money that could be used fighting REAL union issues and SECURING A CONTRACT.

YOU LEFT VOLUNTARILY! You knew what you were getting into. I promise I will use all my resources fighting this. I guess my law degree will come in handy on this one!

“Someone really ought to look into taking all the money Daley steals when he sells City assets (Midway, parking garages, Skyway) and dumping it into pensions”
-SCC

Indeed SCC, but the problem actually goes much deeper. For starters these public assets should never have been put on the auction block to begin with. They were created and maintained with taxpayer funds and placed in the hands of elected representatives as a public trust. It was the responsibility of these officials to see that our public assets served the public’s needs, and it was our responsibility to hold them to that standard. The corporations that are now devouring these assets (today the Skyway, tomorrow Midway & O’Hare) with the assistence of “our” elected officials are motivated not by the public good but by the bottom line. And what’s profitable is not neccessarily what’s in the public’s best interest.

We are now headed towards the Third World model of development in which all of the key public institutions are privatized and responsive to the needs of shareholders rather than the public at large. For example, in South Africa where water and its distribution systems have been privatized, huge swaths of the population have tenuous access to this vital resource due to the fact that it is unprofitable for the multinational corporations in possession of the water rights to deliver it. Heaven help you if your house catches fire or your children are dying of thurst. That’s not their concern, only the bottom line.

The very same principle applies right here in Chicago and elsewhere in America where corporations are hungrily eyeing the public school systems, tranportation systems (including airports and toll roads), and public utilities, all with the connivance of Daleyite collaborators in elected positions of trust. Now funds that were once directed towards addressing the critical infrastructure needs and municipal services of cities are increasingly rerouted directly into the coffers of corporations and major investors who are largely unaccountable to the public.

So we as public employees are now facing a future in which revenue generated from vital pubic assets such as the Skyway, both major airports, the public parking garages and meters will no longer be available to help fund our pensions. If you think any of this is accidental, think again.

My understanding of the pension shortfalls is that CPD and CFD have gotten contract inducements since 1982 and the city hasn't done anything to offset the contract benefits. Privatizing the city assets through long term leases is a way they intend to resolve the existing shortages. So while youre pissing and moaning about the Mayor pocketing the money, other city employees will be relocated or losing their jobs. So if you have proof the mayor is pocketting these funds, step up. Otherwise why dont you shut the fuck up and quit your whining.

With a 401k and saving 20% of your income (they already take 9%...A monthly deposit of 1200 for 30 years with an interest rate of 8.5% compounded monthly with an initial starting balance of 15000 = 2,171,234.34. The plus side of this is that your family gets to keep this money...the whole design of the pension is that you get as few checks as possible before you kick the bucket and all that money that you contribute stays in the fund...whats the widow pension? Its peanuts! Time to re-think this pension system...for those of you unable to save money...grow up! Quit driving that car you can't afford anyway.

All Cook County residents would have to buy a $40 vehicle sticker for each car they own under a proposal two County Board commissioners are floating to help plug a budget deficit now pegged at $238 million.

The county already charges a so-called "wheel tax" on vehicles owned by people living in unincorporated areas. Commissioners Joseph Mario Moreno and Roberto Maldonado, both Chicago Democrats, want to expand that tax to vehicles in municipalities, including Chicago, where the vehicle-sticker fee recently was raised for sport-utility vehicles.

Overall, the 10 funds have an average of just 66% of the money on hand they’ll need to pay projected benefits, a figure known as the funded ratio, the federation said. The situation is particularly dire at funds covering Chicago police and fire workers, which now have covered ratios of just 49.26% and 40.36% respectively.

I'm a PO that also works in Corporate Security for a financial firm in the Chicago Area.

The pension situation is scary and there are questions about deferred comp. Take control of your own investments. The current situation with markets which are turning Bear are providing some unique opportunities.

Many mutual funds are available at reduced rates which offer anywhere from good to great returns on your investments. These funds require a long term committment which is perfect for younger Officers trying to plan for the future.

Some income funds even pay out monthly dividends if you need the extra cash. If not many allow for dividends to be rolled back into the fund towards the purchase of additional shares.

If you're a disciplined investor you can really do well. Most funds can be purchased with a nominal, initial investment.

Another advantage with some mutual funds is that you can actually borrow against your investment; in essence loaning yourself money without reducing the value of your funds as long as you pay it back.

Check some of your options out. We just had our first Child graduate from college and it was amazing how much it cost. For those with little ones you can't imagine how fast Kids grow and how quickly your career goes by.

Don't let this job seal your fate. Plan ahead!

God Bless

SCC,

I will try one more time and that is it.
There is no accountability at the pension board. They are lost. Does anyone on that board know anything about the subprime mess? Do they ask the advisors what type of bonds we are in? Like subprime? How about the stock investments? citicorp, wamu, cfc, and the other stocks that have been hammered. ??
How about the derivatives? Do the bonds have derivative exposure? And most of all, did they own any ambac or mbi??
I know everyone wants to talk about the new supe, led lights and gun control but, if you are working without a pension, good luck.

A big part of the problem is, and I am not positive that this is the case, but with the city it wouldn't surprise me.
I was told that the city makes one pension payment per copper when they retire to match your contributions instead of monthly or even yearly! Can anyone confirm or refute. because if this is correct it is no wonder the fund is underfunded. Because with my calculations assuming a 8% rate of return the average pension should be funded at over 600k at twenty its probably more but I was doing it on my cell phone and screwed up at year 12. But if the city doesn't fund it properly all bets are off.

In this circumstance it is almost a better deal to opt out of the pension, if you fund an IRA correctly.

This is what happens when we don't pay attention. Yes the FOP endorses this and it is called Pension Portability. Read the legislative section on the FOP website and you will see the FOP has supported this bill for years. Our disabled cops go for 10 years without a raise (Does anybody else on the job or in FOP?) but the FOP and the assholes downstate can give away more pension money doing something like this. Fellow FOP memmbers pay attention and read the legislation our FOP supports downstate. Very little if any of it helps the average copper out. Just like the few pension items the politicians passed in 2007 these helped very few people but if you read the website or the newsletter you would think FOP conquered the world. Why does the FOP endorse any politician especially the House and the Senate when none of them has ever pushed through a bill that benefits the copper? Keep voting Democrat and you can be sure that some of you young coppers won't have a pension when you retire.

Maybe we should sue? Look at this Kentucky ruling:

A Kentucky state appellate court has upheld a lower court ruling that the Lexington Urban County government underfunded its police and firefighter pension fund. The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that, unless the Court of Appeals ruling gets overturned, local government officials may have to come up with $30 million to $35 million in back pension payments. The court sided with five police officers who sued the Urban County Government over the underfunding allegations, according to the opinion written by Judge Janet L. Stumbo. Cops chase naked man through snow

February 5, 2008
FROM THE POST-TRIBUNE
CROWN POINT -- Police on Monday afternoon followed footprints in the snow, then K-9 trackers, then a trail of discarded clothes until they found a naked, would-be alleged burglar hiding in a north side neighborhood.

The bizarre chase began around 2 p.m., when a woman in the 1600 block of West 94th Place reported a man had unlocked her door and walked into her house.

The victim ran next door and began pounding on Larry Parson's door.

"I thought it was the postman so I wasn't in any hurry," said Parsons. "I get to the door and she's screaming, 'There's someone in my house!' I look out the window and see this black guy, casual as can be, walking out with, like, some beef jerky or something in his hand, eating."

The man took off running when Parsons, 38, shouted at him. Parsons grabbed his car keys and began following the man.

Police arrived and fanned out over the neighborhood. Parsons spotted tracks in the snow heading toward a nearby park, and alerted a patrol officer. Patrolman Mike Knezevic and K-9 Officer Chuck Sprague tracked the man, who had stripped off all his clothing.

The man, a Chicago Roseland area resident, was taken into custody pending charges.

To the Guy with the law degree" who is ranting and raving about the Pension Portability Bill in the Illinois House, you should do your research before shooting off your mouth. The bill in Springfield if passed would permit a CPD officer with at least 5 years of active service to purchase no more than ten years of pension credits in our pension fund. The affected officer would have to pay BOTH SIDES OF THE CONTRIBUTION ALONG WITH THE COMPOUND INTEREST. Do you really think that the pension fund would just simply let them buy in without all the interest compounded? Go on the State Web site and look up the bill # and then get back on the blog and say "Yes I should have done my research, I f%$#ed up, Sorry".

What a steaming pile of micro-waved pig poop your life must be, being "glad the average cop expires not long after retirement." Do you truly believe what you said? Yet another festering example of how ignorant we ALL are about the financial realities of our under-funded pension.

How many years worth of new CPD retirees need to croak five minutes after putting in their papers for recent hires like yourself to have a guaranteed pension upon retirement? Ten? Fifteen? Twenty years worth? ALL would seem to be the best choice using your logic, but the impending global economic meltdown and 2013 healthcare debacle throw a monkey into that wrench. Add the ever-colourful local political whores into the mix, and not too much in the way of pension monies will be left for ANY survivors at that point...

Hopefully you're using your education and healthy lifestyle to build a crapload of cash (€) and gold reserves NOW for contingencies, and you've started building your family's retirement villa in Central America. It's never too early to start planning for the end of the world.

Think self-centered, it's the CPD way!!

Let them under-fund the pension.

The city and state are on the hook for the benefits. If they can't pay, the federal gvernment is on the hook.

The pension is not governed by our collective bargaining agreement, it is governed by state law. The FOP cannot negotiate any changes with the pension fund. They can only lobby state officials for changes.

Relax.

2/05/2008 07:34:00 AM

I read it's supposed to raise 180m with 108m earmarked for the county healthcare system. I guess Maldonado and Merino gotta take care of all the illegal members/voters of La Raza that they keep importing into Chicago.

This country is being given away by the liberals. Illegal middle easterners can go to banks and get loans by falsyfying documents and then belly-up on the loans. THEY DON'T PAY A PENNY BACK. Many of the loans are SBA loans. So who pays for these defaults? THE TAXPAYER!!

These people aren't even Americans!!! This SCAM is into the millions of dollars right here in Chicago and you can bet the same groups are doing it all over the country. Can you say taxi driver??? Moneys are being sent overseas or laundered in a number of ways here. The government is doing NOTHING. Banks are just as dumb and say they can't profile or that they just want to sell, sell, sell loans. Ditto with the eastern europeans who are scamming and some asian groupS. The eastern europeans are your construction guys into the mortgage loan frauds, too. Again, the banks may see a pattern, but still give the money away like it's f*cking penny candy in a cookie jar. Fellow Chicagoans and fellow Americans, we are doomed until we get someone in office who is gonna put a STOP TO ALL THIS NONSENSE. Oh yea, some of this gets to capital hill via the IG, but still NOTHING GETS DONE!!! Whay are we giving bank loans out to people who aren't American citizens? I'm not talking about a $5,000.00 signature loan here either. We are a borderless country with absolutely NO F*CKING BALLS. I feel for our kids and grandkids. Vote for any candidate that is going to put an end to the looting of our country.

Are you nuts universal health care is what the whole country needs, After 2011 no retirees will have insurance or the family, as it is now most are paying between 300 to 525 a month. Every other country has health care except 3rd world country's. Which by the way also don't have a middle class if you have noticed the middle class is shrinking in the USA. We are heading in the direction of a 3rd world country owned by communist China.

If you are sharp enough to invest at that level you are smart enough to pull out of the market gradually as you reach retirement age, if not, sucks to be you. I have done very well over the last 8 years if I have to give back some of the houses money temporarily oh well.

Has anyone answered my question regarding the timeliness of the city funding of our pension

"sign me up for the 401k.....some always claim that a pension is better...yes if you live for 30+ years past retirement which is probably less than 5% of us"

Please pull your head out of your ass and read carefully the link I provided in my original post. The overhead costs managers charge the 401k customer consumes a massive amount of potential return. Furthermore, there IS NO GUARANTEED RETURN as is the case with Defined Benefit Pension plans such as ours. READ!

What's common here? Location and the fact that both vehicles have F.O.P. stickers on them.

Maybe you should take all of the police regalia off of your vehicles, it serves no purpose. It's open season on the police. Why would you want to advertise that you are the police, to get out of tickets? Obey traffic laws, park legally. Sheesh, No wonder the public hates us.

Anybody know who "secured pension" is? This kid needs to be named! You all know why. He sounds like a guy who would let you die, while he is "kicking back" after 7 years of service! SEVEN FUCKING YEARS! Not exactly a seasoned veteran, although he may be your back-up, think about it.

Let them under-fund the pension.

The city and state are on the hook for the benefits. If they can't pay, the federal gvernment is on the hook.
---------------

And just what are *you* going to do if the City lets the pension run zero? The State aint gonna do shit. The Feds aint gonna do shit. (Esp w/ Obama in the WH.)

The pension system is just another "law" that Daley & Co. CHOOSE to ignore.

One more comment to the smart ass guy who claims he is a lawyer, "you should sign up for some remedial classes at your nearest junior college. The FOP and the Illinois state legislative reps and senators have been working on this bill for a least ten years (back when you were in high school), so like I said sign up for those GED classes, they might help you with your "law career". Pound salt asshat.
