Tax Hike Today?

Remember that transit bailout? Here comes the shaft:
  • Fearful of home buyer backlash, but determined to keep the buses and trains rolling, Chicago aldermen are truly between a rock and hard place when it comes to approving a 40 percent increase in the city’s real estate transfer tax tied to the CTA bailout.
Remember that come election time - a 40% tax increase on what for most of us is the single biggest investment of our entire lives. The one asset that just might enable us to leave our kids something. The thing that might enable us to retire to someplace warmer than here. And these alderthieves are looking to steal another few thousand dollars of your investment to maintain a corrupt and mismanaged agency that can't even keep itself afloat.

And if you don't think it's a done deal, think again:
  • “At the end of the day, we all know we’re gonna do what we have to do to keep the buses and trains rolling,” said Ald. Issac Carothers (29th).
Even though none of this money will actually go to keeping buses and trains running.

A fine idea in a time when the housing market is in dire straits anyhow.

Add a 40% tax, that'll REALLY make people want to buy a house!

Look where a taxpayer voted tax hike in St. Louis is earmarked for. Another police pension fund sues and wins...while we complain on a blog site.

Copyright 2008, St. Louis Post-Dispatch. All Rights Reserved.

ST. LOUIS - Voters on Tuesday approved a sales tax increase that officials said was needed to prevent deep cuts in the city's budget.

The bulk of the $18 million raised annually from the new tax will go toward police and fire pension funds.

But the half-cent increase also will provide raises for public safety employees, hire new police officers and pay for anti-crime programs.

The tax increase was proposed after the city lost a long legal feud with the police and fire pension boards. Last year, the state Supreme Court ruled that the city had shortchanged the funds by more than $20 million combined.

Without the tax increase, the city would not be able to afford its obligation to the pension funds without making cuts, officials said.

Overheard during the course of polling activities; that the family affair, aka, the county Government, is looking to add a tax on razors, razor blades and cosmetics in an attempt to "get through the year".

i love how they've been crying about doomsday coming if the CTA/RTA didnt get any new money - then the same day a new deal is approved for funding - the CTA announces it's paying a contractor $5 million more that originally agreed to for upgrades to new cta trains including plasma monitors and new seats. wtf are they thinking ??
