Gee, Who'd have Thunk It
Redwine, a $17-an-hour watchman for the city’s Department of General Services, pleaded guilty today to stealing 300 gallons of gas for his personal car from taxpayer-owned fueling stations that are supposed to be used for city-owned vehicles.
Acting on a tip provided by the Fleet Management Department, Inspector General David Hoffman conducted an undercover investigation that showed Redwine filled up his tank 30 times between April and November of last year. The city’s 11 fueling stations pump more than six million gallons of gas each year.
This type of low level corruption used to be a staple of the Jacobsons, Zekmans or whoever was writing the "sweeps week" scripts. If it wasn't gas, it was boxes of paper, skimming coins, fake time sheets, etc. With gas prices climbing, it was only a matter of time.

Read the paper today about the I/G spending months conducting surveillance on a Streets n Sanitation worker stealing some gas. According to my estimate the employee got away with about $900.00 worth of free gas at the taxpayer’s expense. I sat back for a moment and thought if I was an editor for a major newspaper would I print this story. Answer is no! Not yet. First I would tell the reporter to find out first who has the twenty million dollar contract to supply gas to the city and check out who owns that company and how they got the contract. Chances are there is a bigger fish to fry here. And how much is the city paying for a gallon of gas (I bet more than the average pump) I lay odds fifty-fifty someone is pulling a scam. Or how did the gas thief get a job with the city in the first place? An alderman, a reverend or other political hack maybe? After a complete investigation then we might have a real story like the arrest of S & S employee leads to the discovery of another BIG CITY SCANDAL!
The media just mesmerizes me. The I/G too. Like why is the I/G wasting so much manpower and resources on a petty thief when Daley’s son got caught red handed stealing thousands of taxpayer dollars and nothing is going to be done about it. Why hasn’t the I/G inform the U.S. Army about ranger boy who should be indicted and transported back to Chicago to face charges? Isn’t this the same kid who had a problem in Michigan a few years back with a baseball bat?
The lesson learn boys and girls is- steal big and be a hero. Steal small and go to jail.
The lesson for J-Fed to learn is- if you lay down with dogs you will get up with fleas.
J-Fed should do his homework before he appoints anyone else to a position of authority. His last picks were BIG mistakes. If I was J-Fed. I would choose my exempts carefully ensuring that extensive background checks were made for criminal and civil wrong doing. And numerous character references from a variety of sources. Verify all information listed on any resumes. And conduct lengthy interviews that may reveal personal issues that maybe embarrassing to the department. Like family relationships? Ownership in corporations doing business with the city? How did you get a choice assignment to so many specialized units? How many meritorious promotions did you get? Who’s your clout? Why should you get the job? If anyone calls you about anyone scratch their name off the list. Hey, it’s your ass too? One hundred percent of all bosses got juice. They didn’t get the job because of being a boy or girl scout.
