For those with a few years on the job, you know all about her. I'm from an outside unit and always had respect for the watch commanders that I've dealt with there for the last 5 years. to my buddies in 002, watch your back because the new regime isn't.

Since we seem to so often only hear negative comments from the public, I thought I would share a story of what recently happened to my partner and I. We were eating dinner in a local diner, late in the evening. Contrary to what a lot of people who aren't police think, my partner and I always frequent restaraunts where we do pay for our meals. As we went to the cash register to pay for our meal, we were told by the waitress that it had already been paid for. She pointed to an older gentleman who I would guess to be in his 70's, sitting across the room, who she stated was a retired postal worker. She said he comes in several times a week to have coffee late at night, and everytime he sees police officers eating he pays for their meals. When I started to walk towards him to thank him for his generosity, she stopped me and told me not to thank him. She said he refuses to be thanked. He simply wants to show his appreciation for police officers that no one seems thank anymore. She honestly gave this speech as if she's said it many times before to other police officers. Each time I get discouraged by the public outcry when we simply do our jobs, I remember the time that "true gentleman" thanked me in the best way he saw fit, and I think that there are probably many more like him around this city and country, that we quickly foget about when the public is critizing us for doing our jobs. Much the way the public often forgets about the good police in the department. I'd encourage anyone who has had an experience like mine to share it. I think it's time to hear a few positive posts, rather than all the negative ones.

It may help if the bosses quit messing with their personnel. Historically, the police have worked for those they respect--what happened to the supervisor "you" wanted to work hard for? If I hear one more time from a boss, "if I have to be out there Friday and Saturday nights, so do you!" What is that? Why do they think for one minute changing day off groups and hours is going to garner respect? Why in the world would that make me want to work harder?

Traffic court fees went up, about time. People are now getting hit for $135 in fees, next to their regular fine for the citation(s).
Before, one got convicted for no DL, no insurance and paid $95. It was such a waste of time.

The only thing that is keeping the murder rate down is our fine CFD Emergency Medical Service and Hospitals.
If THEY keep beating us down, killing our morale, opening old CR wounds, failing to prosecute felony arrests, snooping into our private lives and continuing to to cut our spendable pay and benefits, then THEY will have to put up with a higher murder rate.
History shows that we did not get real improvements in pay and benefits until there were riots and a lot of blood on the streets. So maybe a higher murder rate may be a good thing for us.

Lack of progress on the contract is the fault of the City of Chicago. The excuse last year for slow progress was there was no Superintendent.
Now we have a new Superintendent and contract negotiation has SLOWED DOWN more than before.
This is the fault of the City, NOT the FOP, the FOP has been ready since July 1, 2007 to bargain on every issue, the city has not and still has not produced a full proposal.
Write to the Mayor with your gripes, the slow pace is at his doorstep, it certainly isn't due to the FOP not doing whatever people think they should be doing. Filing for arbitration is not as simple a solution either.

We were eating dinner in a local diner, late in the evening. Contrary to what a lot of people who aren't police think, my partner and I always frequent restaraunts where we do pay for our meals. As we went to the cash register to pay for our meal, we were told by the waitress that it had already been paid for. She pointed to an older gentleman who I would guess to be in his 70's, sitting across the room, who she stated was a retired postal worker. She said he comes in several times a week to have coffee late at night, and everytime he sees police officers eating he pays for their meals. When I started to walk towards him to thank him for his generosity, she stopped me and told me not to thank him. She said he refuses to be thanked. He simply wants to show his appreciation for police officers that no one seems thank anymore. She honestly gave this speech as if she's said it many times before to other police officers. Each time I get discouraged by the public outcry when we simply do our jobs, I remember the time that "true gentleman" thanked me in the best way he saw fit, and I think that there are probably many more like him around this city and country, that we quickly foget about when the public is critizing us for doing our jobs. Much the way the public often forgets about the good police in the department. I'd encourage anyone who has had an experience like mine to share it. I think it's time to hear a few positive posts, rather than all the negative ones.

That sounds like Bill Kugelman,the former CFD Local 2 union boss. I have met and spoken to him numerous times and he is a huge police advocate and a great guy. He lost his son to the job,he was an ISP Trooper.

I was just wondering how many of you would have made it back when the projects were 95% occupied, over 500 killed almost every year, we had no contract, no air conditioned cars, no computers, 2way radios mounted in the car, no safety vests, no tasers, clumsy dodges with bench seats, minimum wages, day off based on your ability to slip a couple bucks in an enevelope and slip it to the secretary, rotating shifts every period (ping ponging from 3rd to 1st watch)almost everybody above the rank of SGT was politically connected, no night court, no cell phones, no bottle water, the infamous "BUM" wagon in the 12th Dst. No FOP.....hell no union or bargaining agents, if a cop got burned in some nonsense HE WAS GONE.....except for the craziness doing the Democratic convention and the CIty only stood up for the coppers being blamed because of the city's liabilities, no electronic desposits, no shift differential pay, no uniform allowance pay, no internet, no blogs, TV news was 15 minutes long from 10pm to 10:15 pm including the weather and sports..Fahey flynn and P J Hoof(sp) of Alex Drier, TV went off at around midnight and there was only channel 2, 5, 7, 9 and occassionaly 11. FM radio frequency only played in certain parts of the city, Officer's had earplug connected to a hidden transistor radio listening to the ballgames, instead of blinking bluetooths,traffic guys were the only guys wearing white hats, we all had stripes down the side of our pants, I could go on and on about the gains made just in the last 40 years, alot of you guys have come on this job thinking that all that you have was already in exsistence and tailored made from day one in your academy days.
The one overwhelming factor that most of us had and could hold on to is that we were THE POLICE, we look like the police, walk like the police and talk like the police
and most of us retired as the police, and Yes even back then you couldn't get 3 coppers to agree on lunch, but I can't every remember seeing or hearing the back stabbing smear jobs that you guy do to one another, this is the real world people, it was here before me and I know it was here before you. Sir you are lucky that you are retired, but please understand that what we are complaining about has nothing to do with "things". At least not for me.
I cannot stand the lack of competent supervision on this Department. I will say it to the end, it started with Hillard and Cline made it worse. They promoted 9-year officers to exempt positions. They arranged for 4-year officers to take a leave and return the next day as a deputy superintendent. They only promoted yes men who would never disagree with their ridiculous decisions. They double and triple meritoriously promoted every thieven stupid prick they knew.
We are stuck with an entire gaggle of supervisors who are still here for a long time because they are so young. I am a supervisor and I am extremely embarrassed to be next to any of them. So I can understand why these kids are angry. They have no support, no guidance, no mentors. These supervisors today are only out for themselves and make no bones about it.
The list of our problems is too huge to mention. But, I will mention that in your era you were lucky enough to not only drink with the judges, sometimes you got to be the judge when he didn't show up for court. Eh?
So give us a break. There is no way you can compare today's department to yours. Ours just suck.
