2 Off 4 On Poster
Why do you refuse to publish my comments about the 4 and 2 schedule.
Because you publish it 8 times a day in 8 different threads. We delete duplicate comments out of hand. If you have a point, make it, and trust your message will go through instead of wasting our and everyone else's time.
SCC must be a fan of the 12 hour day and refuses to publish any comments to contrary.
We would despise a 12 hour day personally, but it hasn't really come up yet, so we haven't expounded on it. If it does come up, we'll have posts on it. As to the "refusal" see the previous rebuttal.
Wow that’s fair. Hey, don't let the rank and file be informed, remember it's all about you!
Again, one time is fair, twice is us being generous. Eight times a day is you being an ass and we don't need to indulge that. This site has ALWAYS been about what interests us...welcome to reality.
I’m done with your site.
Sure you are.
You censer comments you don't agree with
A lie as evidenced by our posting this. And it's spelled "censor."
..great county America.
Yes it is. The greatest country on earth. But it isn't America censoring you - it's SCC. This is the dictatorship of SCC. You have ZERO expectation of free speech here. Learn to live with it.
For the record, we regularly delete duplicate comments, racist rants, ad hominem attacks on SCC, the blog, certain individuals, and a laundry list of words that confuse our grandmother when she reads the site. Long time readers know of what we speak; short timers can usually figure it out after a try or two; short bus riders (such as yourself) might have a bit of a difficulty. Try harder asshat

Why do some people NOT understand that a blog is not a public posting forum?
Well done SCC... Personally, I think you let the pouting PPO off easy.
i will only post one comment about the 4 on 2 off schedule(8hr days).I worked that schedule for a west suburban department and loved the schedule..the FOP rep told me in our district that its not enough hours in a calender year to match what we have now(6&2);the city would want something in return..I seen in the news that other cities are going to a 4&2 to cut down on the cost of gas prices to its employees (ie less trips to work)..If we(CPD)could get this schedule to pass;i would highly suggest it over our current schedule..day off groups remain the same.
Despite your feud, 4/2 is a great schedule. I worked it in CCDOC, you never burn out.
Off Topic, but Jody must leave this in his wake wherever her goes.
He visited Homan Square the week, and now the rumor is he will bring in one of his FBI pals to run Narcotics.
Dear SCC
For informational purposes, I have a son who is on a Dept that works 12 hour days. He personally loves it. Of course he is young and he loves being at work. Iy sure isnt like doing 12 hours in Englewood where I worked before I retired. among other places. It works like this the Dept is split into 4 squads. These are the field personnel of course, not house cats. The shifts are 7 AM - 7 PM. week starts on Monday work two days, off two days. Work Three days. Thats seven days. Then Monday again Off Two days, work two days, Off three days. every other weekend three days off. During a two week stretch each officer has four hours flex time they must take off to stay under FLSA hours per month worked. Long days, lots of time off. They work a shift four months at a time then go on the other shift. Only two shifts. every Dept that has this scheduloe loves it. The entire shift supervisors etc rotate and work the same hours. A much closer group of people.
Everyone on his dept loves it. Not much personal time on work days but great on all the days off.
If its isn't broke......don't fix it. The straight watches are working and as far as the 12 hour day if you think your 8 hour tour is long, well think again, I know then every tired person will try to take "2 on the end" because they are burned out. Enough said.
How about 4 10's and 3 off? Rotating Schedule? The only thing that sucks is that I hear (take no offense) some of the old timers bitching about the 2 extra hours the possible late arrest etc etc. Here is my thing, You old timers are only gonna be around for a few more years, there are some of us out there that have 10 more years to go and a lot of guys and gals that have a lot more time than that.
Id rather work 4 ten hour days and have three in a row off...More days off in a row allows me to spend more time with the family and get other things done around the house.
A lot of burbs have this 4 on 2 off system.I've yet to meet a copper that worked it and didn't like it.It won't ever happen here in Chicago....our FOP keeps bringing up 10 or 12 hour day schedules. And as far as 4/2 not being enough hours for the city.....WTF?Was this carved in stone by God or something?Negotiate!!!Oh,thats right we don't have a union.
America is a great COUNTRY. America is not a county that I know of. I will not say what I think of our County as my post will be deleted.
SCC,
Your dilligence in managing the crp that comes accross the comments is what makes this blog a joy to read.
From a very reliable source that stated "this is going to happen sometime after January, the new schedule will be 6 on 3 off. Special units will get fixed DO group Sun Mon Tues off. Take this to the bank.
the moron with the 4 on 2 off doesnt realize how many days in a row we would work to cover the 40 hour week. thank you for not posting it anymore. and for the love of all, SCC doesnt make the news, they just show it to us.
There have been numerous studies done on 12hr work days and they all conclude that the accident rate (all kinds) goes up dramaticly during the last two hours.
I agree, when I worked for the county years ago. this schedule was great. It seemed like just as your work week started it was over. This seems much better than working a long hot 12 hour day with someone you can't stand. I say let's GO FOR IT
Great response to asshat. Keep up the good and proper answers.
P
12 hour days are the worst idea ever. figure an hours travel and changing time from house to roll call each way.... now you have 14 hours dedicated to work. wanna sleep 8 hours, now you have 22 hours dedicated to work, getting to and from work (and locker room time), and sleep. that leaves TWO HOURS to work out, see the kids, go to school, fart, etc. Unless you have court, in which case you have NO TIME FOR YOURSELF for 2 or 3 straight days. We'll be so burned out on our days off that it won't be worth it.
Of course we would all love a schedule like this, but the dramatic loss of manpower to the city makes this dead on arrival unless we agreed to take a large pay cut. I personally loved the 10 hour days when it was a pilot program in areas 1 and 5.
An FOP trustee who I work with informed me that the schedule the union is pushing is a permanent 6 on 3 off week. Sounds like a good deal to me.

---------------------------------
I personally worked that schedule before only there were four watches. 6a-6p, 7a-7p, 3p-3a, 7p-7a...We would work our shift for six months then bid by seniority for what watch you want. It was a great schedule. I felt like I was semi-retired with all the days off I had, and the city gets more bodies on the street without having to increase manpower, or reduce the total number of hours PO's work.
the FOP rep told me in our district that its not enough hours in a calender year to match what we have now(6&2);the city would want something in return
the city is already taking what it wants from us...look at the city's contract proposals, the negative media it is allowing of police during contract negotiations, and the dragging out in time since our contract has lapsed. the city never loses out.
You don't delete racist comments. I see them all the time. I'm white but I can only imagine how the blacks and hispanics feel.Absolutely LOVE your site and don't see myself ever not checking it out daily. But you and your commentors do come off a lil racist sometimes.
That 4 on 2 off schedule is very interesting.
I'd actually be even more interested in 1 on 4 off, with weekends every forth day.
Maybe the poster can't help it. Maybe he has OCD or something.
..great county America.
Notice the illiterate hump said COUNTY, not COUNTRY! You guys didn't catch it, either.
Anyway, 4/10's are good (4days/10hr shifts) but personally I love 12 hrs shifts because it maximizes days off.
I don't think that the 12 hr shifts referenced above would be all that great (2on/2off/3on), but the 3/12-4/12 schedule is sweet. 3 days on one week, 4 days off the next. If you plan it right, you can get 10 days off in a row if you take vacation on your week when you work your 3/12. That's 3 days vacation time for 10 days off. You can't beat that!
I never heard of this schedule before, but after giving it some thought, man to get rid of not only the 6-day but the 5-day also...Wow.
I hate the 6-day and at the 5-day I'm already spent, I'm done. I have to say 4 8-hour days would be great. Someone stated it's 18 less days worked a year, but if you think about thats only 1-1/2 days per month and man I would be much less stressed with a 4 day work week. I have heard people talk about study's that state most of the problems, beefs etc., happen on the 5 and 6 day (I don't know if that true)but if so this 4/2 would benifit the city with happier p/o's, less CR's,less law suits. I don't think the 18 days a year should matter that much when you look at all the benifits for both sides. I say lets push this..
12 hour shifts sound good when youre awake during the day, but try working the dark side and then having to go to court.
How about 24 on- 48 off like the fireman. Then we can get full time jobs outsie of our city job and double our yearly ssalaries.
Great job SCC.
Off topic:
Has anybody experienced an integrity check in the CCG in the last few weeks???
Maybe we can get the alderman's schedule. Work part-time for full time benefits.
Then we can get the same pension benefits that the state legislator's get. Ex. Ronan(sp)she works 16 years and gets 80% pension, roughly $102,000 a year with a 3% cola meaning after 10 years of retirement that woman will be making $132,000 a year. My salary hasn't gone up that much since I started here 12+ years ago.
Heard that Daley and the FOP are working hard to get us a 7 on and 0 off schedule.
cat fight

12 hr days would kill me and my wife. we have 7 yrs on and just had a baby. we would both be on midnights and god knows what we would do for day care. one of the few perks in this crap hole job is that eventully you can go back to the ghetto and get days for your family while the other one works nights. Pls no 12 hrs days. that would ruin lots of people.
do the fucking 10 hours schedule and shut the fuck up. it's great! don't knock it until you try it. 3 days off in a row every week and then you get 3 - four (04) day weekends in a row. pop one or two days on to whenever and you got little mini furloughs all the time. it's a great schedule and 2 extra hours in your tour doesn't really hurt. 45 minute lunch instead of 30 and still have 2 personals. the 12 hour schedule sucks and so does our current schedule. vote for 10 hours schedule, believe me , its the shit.
10 hour days would make this place oh so much better!

AMEN BROTHER. im just guessing you would spend one of your days off pretty much just sleeping or resting up. and could you imagine working a whole 12 hour tour with one of the many softballs on this dept.

If you believe the City will give us 18 extra days off a year just because IT IS GOOD FOR US you must be crazy loco or under the influence.
The City will demand to be paid back, those 18 days will have to be covered some way. no doubt about it. Give backs such as BFD, P-Day etc. The City of Chicago is NOT about to say, "OK Officers, we will give you 18 more days off a year so you might feel better, enjoy!"
If we get something we will have to give something. that's reality.
Why on earth would I want to give up the 4 hour work day I now enjoy?
I get coffee, eat breakfast, go shopping, read the newspaper, smoke a good cigar, ride around looking at women. some days take a nap and maybe give Juan or Julio or Willy some tickets and tow their car. It just doesn't get much better. All that and they direct deposit almost $80,000 a year right into my bank account! Good thing I didn't take that better paying job over at the Ford or GM plant back in the day.
I must go now and get my city car so I can take care of some stuff today. Thanks Mayor. Don't change a thing, I like it as it is.

Screw that I want 2 on 4 off now that would be great kind of like fusion center you call they have answering servioe just great job guys!

Man I love these types of comments. I have 24 yrs on and I am a bit tired of hearing how the coppers with less time, generally less than 10 years think that all decisions should be made with them in mind. I read through this thread and heard someone beefing about how a certain schedule might affect their child care problems. Let's see, husband and wife coppers, combined salaries of 100,000 to 120,000 and can't figure out a way to care for the babies. What's wrong, Mom and Dad don't want the little ones for 14 hrs a day. No shit? Tough. You think it was easy when we were rotating shifts, and had the kids during the day while the wife went to work? That's part of your job as a parent. If it doesn't work, one of you quit and stay home, Or bid to a district where you can work differing schedules. At any rate, quit whining about it. Yes, there are some of us who were born earlier, and came on earlier. We had to put up with all of the same crap that you have to, although I will admit that the job was more fun back then, less bullshit and more stand up bosses, and we could be the police without everybody crawling up our asses, bosses, media and the public. But I digress. You want something to complain about Mr. young officer? Complain about the contract, or staffing, or the price of healthcare. Get the union to do something about how much you will have to pay for medical insurance after you retire. There should be some sort of program where the people working now are putting money away for medical insurance post retirement. But younger people on the job don't think that way, and I didn't either. I wish I knew then what I know now. Trust me on this one, buddy-the next 15-20 years until you retire are going to go by in the blink of an eye. Then you will be the guy that young coppers are whacking around-"retire, make room for us". Call us dinosaur cop or whatever you want, but we have put in our time and we are going to reap our benefits. Your time will come too, and sooner than you think.
PS-I think 12 hours is too long, 4 tens is the way to go, and I agree-the city isn't just going to hand you 18 days or whatever, they will want something back-and every union leader says-never give anything back.
SCC you disappoint me. You don't want the truth to come out. I'm with this guy who wrote that you filter certain things. Nothing I wrote was offensive. I spoke the truth about the fat on this Department. You obviously are in contact with exempts that you'd like to curry favor with and therefore you filter out the truth. That's okay. It your blog but I know you are not impartial. You, like they, have your own agenda. That's cool. I won't bother here anymore. More of the same that we're used to. You lost another reader.
Which "fat" are you speaking of? Are you making statements of fact or wild accusations? Are you naming names that aren't attached to criminal investigations? If we took out the comment, we had a reason. E-mail and ask.
I want to commend 06/06/08 03:18pm for his post.
I'm also tired of these "college educated elitists" thinking that with less than 10yrs on this job, that they somehow run the show. lol.
here used to be something called "SHUT-UP AND PAY YOUR DUES"! These KIDS don't have a clue of what a tough schedule/work enviroment we used to have. Remember the 28 day BACKWARD rotation? The changing of your DOG as soon as your weekends came around? Being dumped to other districts? Thousand of us "OLD TIMERS" did it for years! We DID something about it. We got the collective bargaining that protects you whining rookies. Funny, all this whining seemed to really start with the college requirement to get on this job. But that's what kids are taught today in these schools. The "ME" generation.
As for the copper whining about you kids, THOUSANDS of coppers never got to see their kids grow up because the wife stayed home and he worked at least two jobs (and court) to support the family. So if you want a hubby and wife Po-Po family, DEAL WITH IT. Don't whine that the whole dept. shouldn't make a change because GOD FORBID, it may make your approximately 150,000.00 income too tough on you. GIMME A BREAK!
Just like the proposal that the city wants to get rid of the "NON-IOD" Limited Duty coppers. Once again, the "newbies" are saying fuck them do-nothing coppers. While there are some coppers that do take advantage of it, there are many coppers that regretfully had shit happen to them in their lives that they didn't ask for. Many of these coppers work very hard doing other type of administrative work. ie; E&RPS, Call Back, Records Division, etc.. These are all sensitive areas that need to be manned by the police. Can you imagine if they get rid of the coppers and civilianized these units? The confiscated guns and dope and criminal records would be fucked. So before you run your gums about you want "right now", try thinking about the future for once. Think about it, what are you gonna do if something regretfully happens to you medically and you can't work the street? With less than 15 years, you're fucked. Not enough time for disability to hit pension. You're just gone. Then try and take care of your family on welfare!
So, I know it's easy for the young guys full of P&V to think otherwise (we were ALL there once) but we better ALL start getting together and telling this useless fucking FOP that we've had it with their "sleeping with the city" bullshit! I'm sick of watching them settle for a "whopping" 3-4 fucking percent, while the cost of living is going up 10 in Daley's fucking amusement park city!
I left CPD two years ago for the suburbs. I worked for CPD for 8 years. The grass isnt greener on the other side but it isnt burnt though. I work in orland park now and we work 6 and 3....the only problem CPD will have with this schedule is you fall short of the required 2080 hours needed to fulfill your year.(like 70 hours or so give or take) we are required to come in on off days to make up the hours with training. For instance when we shoot its a 3 hour training block. easy to do for us because we only have about a 100 officers. I dont know how CPD would control it. The extra day off is awesome especially for midnight officers
