Missing "Homicides"?

Supposedly, as the Sun Times reports, weekend violence left six dead. But they still use this term:
  • Police are still looking at the death of a 32-year-old woman who was shot in the head Sunday night on the South Side as a death investigation.

Erika Prince of the 7400 block of S. Eberhart Ave. suffered a gunshot wound to the head at 8745 S. Euclid Ave., according to the medical examiner's office. She was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. Police Monday morning have no details on the shooting.

We never liked that term - death investigation. If you find a dead body with a bullet in the head and you don't find a gun nearby and there's really no way the gun left the scene without assistance, "death investigation" seems like a cop out.

Spare us the screams of outrage Detectives - we realize there's a time and a place for "death investigations," but it still seems like a cop out.

And isn't this one a homicide?
  • A man reportedly sacrificed his own life early Saturday by pushing a female companion out of the way of an out-of-control vehicle that struck the man before flipping over on the South Side. [...]

A vehicle involved in a road rage incident lost control and struck the man, who was possibly walking with his girlfriend, according to an Englewood District officer.

Road rage? Reckless Homicide at the least. Is it counted as such in the homicide numbers though?

How are they going to count the numerous homicides that are going to come later in the year for the Obama victory/loss celebration/riot. Its going to happen either way and these will be way worse than the Bulls celebrations. It will be like the time MLK was killed if Obama does not win. Hang on plans are already being planned at City Hall and HQ for no CU, no fulros and POs to stay at the stations 24 hours/ round the clock until peace is restored. This goes for CFD also with POs to be stationed at fire houses.

Seems like its safer to be in the Middle East than here in Chicago. The chances of getting shot are worse here.

Maybe instead of hiding in an office, if you got out once in awhile you'd understand about death investigations.
Let us know when you pass part one of the detectives exam. While it wont give you much insight on how detectives do their jobs, atleast it'll show you're moving in the right direction. Keep us posted.

Several months back SCC reported a rumor that the homicide statistics for previous years was being adjusted upwards.

Did this ever happen?

What are the new numbers for the Cline years as Chief of Detectives and then Superintendent?

We passed part one, same as you brother. Trouble was Dad knows we're going to make it on score - you had to be "merited" in. You were always the slower one so Dad had to look out for you. Remember when he decided you were too inept to get laid? And he had to take you over to...well,maybe that's a story for another time.

Point is, you're living proof of what Dad saw - we expressed the opinion we didn't like the classification, we pointed out a specific instance where we expressed doubt about the reasoning, and we acknowledged "there's a time and a place" to utilize the classification.

And even after all that, you still have the ignorance to say we don't work death investigations on the street.

Did you ever manage to get laid that night on North Avenue? Dad left you there with a handful of twenties. God help us all if you managed to breed

SCC, your a little off-base here. You are sounding like the liberal media.

Just because you "Pass" the 1st part of a test doesn't make you a Detective. The original classification doesn't do anything for the stats. The final stats come from the reports that are later re-classified / cleared or closed. It is easier to re-classify a death investigation to Homicide than to downgrade the Homicide.

Although I am no longer a Detective, I did work on cases where Patrol wanted to make a Homicide case report, but the investigation proved they were Suicides. Sadly one was a police officer shot in the head in his car, No Gun in car!!! Local piss bums saw an opportunity to take the gun & wallet from the dead mans car.

My point is, give a little credit to the hard working men and women of the Detective Division who won't jeopardize their pensions for the sake of numbers. Especially in these times.

Stay Thirsty my friends.

for whatever reason hit and runs or the case of the man sacrificing himself for the female, is not considered a homicide for whatever reason? maybe because it's considered an "accident" more so than an actual act to kill someone

Your right SCC, they are reverting to Kleins way of counting homicides, adapted from the NY way. Its not a homicide its a death investigation until they get a suspect, then change it. Also until the ME's determination comes back. When the death is counted, if it is, it will be months perhaps a year away and no one cares about last years count except to say this years count is less.

I've never gone to a scene and told patrol to change that GOCR-Homicide to Hospitalization-Death Investigation.

It's a PRELIMINARY report completed by the patrol diviison.
Each case has it's own set of circumstances.

It's easier to later re-classify from death to homicide. Don't we all know this?

Could it have been the KKK, a neo-

No, it was some ghetto banger that
mis-shot or mistakened her.
Where's all the liberal outrage over this; the murder of an innocent school teacher!
Youz go all out when some Policeman cracks a drunk or some banger, but not a peep over this.

Thats how the murder numbers dropped off the last few years. If there was a guy on the street with 10 arrows in his back, but no witnesses around "death investigation". Lighten up hard charging dics, you know what the truth is as well. Re-classify and pad the numbers to keep the murder rate down. The city that works.....

As I expressed my opinion that you dont know whats going on.

How is death investigation a cop out? You writing out Death Investigation General Offense cases? Naw you're too buzy being someones lap dog to write a report.
Once it's determined to be a homicide, suicide, natural then it's not a death investigation.

Like I said keep studying for that exam. Merit just means you dont have to stand in line. And at the end of the day the guy who waited in line and the merit pick are still wearin the same shirts and ties.

------------------------------------------
SPRINGFIELD — Senate Democrats tried but failed to toss a tough-on-crime member from the state’s parole board, an effort that Republicans say may be designed to engineer freedom for Rockford cop-killer Theodore Bacino.

“If he’s released fairly, that’s fine,” said Terry Rudeen, widow of Winnebago County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Mayborne, Bacino’s victim. “But I don’t like hearing about how possibly the deck was stacked or that they were attempting to.”

Sen. Rickey Hendon, D-Chicago, and fellow Senate Democrats on Thursday came just two votes shy of ousting Salvador Diaz, a retired Chicago police officer and darling of Illinois prosecutors, from the Prisoner Review Board......................

Detectives have absolutely no reason to cover-up a murder. It's just another supp. If it goes unsolved, no one cares. Most of them are unsolved.

What the det. doesn't want to do is write a homicide supp for a death investigation and then sit through stupid meetings and write more stupid reports explaining why the reported homicide is actually just a death.

As far as SCC quoting the heroic "he got kilt cause he was savin his hommie" news story, get real. SCC watches too much TV, and believes way more than he/she/it should. Those are the new buzz words for the family to get every mope's death on the TV.

When media speak say homicide, they mean MURDER. That's why that "First Degree Murder" goes in Box 2. The issue is murders, not deaths caused by another, otherwise known as the all-inclusive homicide.

All murders are homicides, but not all homicides are murders.

Reckless homicides are not murders. They're just traffic fatalities cause by reckless/drunken behavior.

Stop getting all your info from TV talking heads that lie.

Yea, anymore info? GREAT job 008! Let the bodies hit the floor! Supposed to be a hot, steamy weekend. Ooooohhhhh J-FED...better have the lil woman get to Costco tomorrow morning for the super industrial sized vat of Advil!

Excellent point on the Obama rioting. Hadn't even occurred to me yet. Wouldn't it be just tragic for Dicky boy when a oh, I don't know... let's be semi-reasonable here 15% of the department suddenly goes IOD? Darn those potholes in the back parking lot!

Missing homicides? I got 1 for ya. New Years Eve 2006 (?)... Phil vowed to keep the body count for the year under 600 (I think that was the number). The numbers kept goin' up n up... right before midnight a Domestic Battery call. Hubby decides he wants to start the new year single. Pops the ole lady. Within 45 minutes more brass than I've ever seen in 1 place suddenly converges on the district. All the white shirts brow beating the P.O. doing the paper. Sgt's all the way up to Phil himself. Instead of being a 0110 - hubby was charged with a MCC failure to register and walks.

Final body count that year? 452. (don't quote me, had to do a quick Google) Makes ya wonder how many other murders were brushed under the rug like this one was.

Overall, the only bright spot in this department right now is seeing the blue shirts finally working together across the city for a common goal. Start fucking over those who have fucked us over for far too long. The report bin at the desk is overflowing at times. I see far more paper being generated than I ever have before. Not to mention the time that is being committed to insure the report is being completed thoroughly and correctly. Well done! Let's keep the good work going!

Lil OT, but not too far. ERPS is apparently running out of room. Thanks to the sticky fingers of some (note some, not all) County employees WE are now required to inventory everything in a prisoners possession. It's a nightmare down there. It's all about CYA folks. Inventory EVERYTHING. Seperately if possible. It's easy to copy the previous inventory so you don't have to keep re-typing the same info. If you don't know how, have someone show you. BURY em!

The new policeman. A computer servant.

Well then, I guess there is no problem starting a bogus murder investigation as long as it can be changed in the computer later on.

How about the crime lab (one of only two available) that had to collect all this evidence for this death investigation?

What about coppers in other areas of the city that had to stand around volitile murder scenes waiting for a crime lab that was wasting time on a death investigation?

What about the coppers that had to go on a canvass and gather up witnesses to this death?

What about all the witness interviews for this death investigation?

What about sending out multiple detectives, making other coppers in the Area wait around, while they all investigate this should-have-been-just-a-death-investigation?

What about the evidence submitted to ISP looking for DNA, fingerprints, etc...? What happens once that ball starts rolling?

What about the ME wasting his time gathering up nail clipings and hair samples for this death investigation? More evidence nonsense for a death.

What's the procedure for this simple computer change? Do I call you up? Buy you supper? Do I have to come and meet with you before the magic computer prints out what we already knew all along?
