Viewing Party!
Word just coming in from HQ that J-Fed is holding a special "Viewing Party" for any interested officers and supervisors down at the Multi Purpose Room tomorrow evening.
Everyone is invited, admission is $20 and will help defray the costs of the Headquarters Christmas Party. Doors open at 1700 hours.
As a special added bonus, IAD will be on hand to strip anyone whose name comes up in the 60 Minutes report.
We will attempt to "Live Blog" the report as it happens. We might be relegated to updating from the TIVO though.
UPDATE: No live blogging, but a minor rehashing:
This clip didn't do us any favors, but it's nothing that isn't already known. The report said the feds are still looking into supervisory culpability and that's exactly what KH is trying to spin. Time will tell if it works.

Don't we have SWAT teams that are on duty between 0700-1600? Are these people really on standby? If so, how pathetic a police departmnet do we have that we'd have to page 4 people out of class? Saving them parking spots while the rest of the class shows up an hour early to fight for street parking seems like another classic MT clout rule. MT always uses his special rules when his people are involved. I can see how the SOS shit must have gone down.

I went into the show thinking what a jag off KH was, but after it was done i actually kind of feel for the guy. He doesn't seem like that bad of a person. He just made some bad choices and didn't have enough will power to stand up for himself at crucial times early in his career and it snowballed into what had happened.
As for sometimes having to bend some rules to put these dangerous, murderous criminals in prison, i understand that. And i think the public actually wouldn't have so much a problem with that and would at least understand that he was trying to do good.
People come up to me all the time and ask why i don't arrest so and so and put him away and i would love to b/c some of these guys really terrorize the communities and need to be put away. Sometimes all these laws get in the way of common sense.
The problem he got into was the stealing money. Even though it was probablly mostly from drug dealers and the like, stealing is just not accepted by anyone.
And on the subject of him doing a class or so at the academy, i'm all for it. I don't know why all of you on here think that's a bad idea. This guy has been through it all. I think he would be invaluable and i would have loved to hear his story and learn from his mistakes.
Lastly, this job we have has many temptations and it can be easy for a weak minded person to lose their way. I'm not the most religious guy in the world, but this guy made some mistakes. some bad ones that have reflected bad on all of us. But he has now publicly admitted to them and instead of continuing to chastize him, i instead chose to forgive him.
You know what? He is right, this isn't podunk Iowa.
He is a fucking idiot for taking that money but I have to wonder if that money would have been such a temptation to officers that weren't working 3-4 side jobs just to be able to afford their residency requirement here.
I think Herrera lifted a wallet from one of those little leaguers rounding the bases..

Forgive maybe but not forget. He did not accept blame. Recruits in academy are a captured audience. They have no choice. What did he hope to accomplish but more negative attention to CPD. How many more media beatings can we take? No leaders, no defenders, other than Monique the mouth. MT can give herrera a parking pass.

A big problem is KH almost represented himself as a sympathetic figure, someone just trying to do some good in a broken system. But there were holes like when he says if a guy throws a gun he gets off. I may be nuts but if you saw the guy with a gun, whether he throws it or not, not much difference. What he "leaked" in his speech is he has put guns on folks that he never saw with a gun. He also took money. The dude is corrupt, period. To any young copper who might ever get told that "you know he had the gun, just say what you have to say." Listen, you got the next several years to catch this guy dirty and you will. And some might say but what about the crime he commits in the mean time. Well, as we all know for everyone you catch there are ten to take his place. What's more important is your integrity. It's a slippery slope and once you start down it, it's hard to get off it. A better option is to just be as alert and observant as you can be out there. Strive hard to know the law and all the legal changes. For example, I'm always amazed by how many coppers who don't know the "plain feel exception." And some who do say you'll never when those in court, yea, like were getting probable cause all the time now, right???? ...And this sergeant always gives this advice as do any fellow sergeants I work with..If you have a sergeant telling you different understand this very clearly, he's the type to stand right next to you when the accolades come and the first to deny you when the crap really hits the fan. My question is where was Keith’s supervisors and commanders while all this was going on? What did they know at the time? Are they being investigated? When will they be held accountable? Herrara is a criminal that was caught. I can't believe how he tarnished the reputation of all the good, honest chicago police officers that work hard and don't get any recognition. He made it seem like the department is infultrated with criminals like himself. Maybe it was the pressure from the bosses. Maybe it was someone like the deputy from area four, E. Johnson, told 011th district tactical and gang coppers to bring in 4 heads a day, everyday and a search warrant a period. Let's not worry about violating civil rights. What happens if you don't see 4 violations of the law everyday. He will replace you for someone who can. He also told someone to use his own personnal car to do narocotic surveillance. J-Fed didn't replace him. Makes you wonder why.
I went into the show thinking what a jag off KH was, but after it was done i actually kind of feel for the guy. He doesn't seem like that bad of a person. He just made some bad choices and didn't have enough will power to stand up for himself at crucial times early in his career and it snowballed into what had happened.
As for sometimes having to bend some rules to put these dangerous, murderous criminals in prison, i understand that. And i think the public actually wouldn't have so much a problem with that and would at least understand that he was trying to do good.
People come up to me all the time and ask why i don't arrest so and so and put him away and i would love to b/c some of these guys really terrorize the communities and need to be put away. Sometimes all these laws get in the way of common sense.
The problem he got into was the stealing money. Even though it was probablly mostly from drug dealers and the like, stealing is just not accepted by anyone.
And on the subject of him doing a class or so at the academy, i'm all for it. I don't know why all of you on here think that's a bad idea. This guy has been through it all. I think he would be invaluable and i would have loved to hear his story and learn from his mistakes.

Only slightly off topic...off, yet related to the general topic of why the entire country seems to be starting to hate the CPD:
I have 10 years on the job and I live in the 014. This morning at 5 AM (after just coming off of my 3rd watch shift and finally getting to sleep) I was jolted awake by a goof P.O. in his car on the PA waking up the whole friggin' block by yelling "Vanessa Perez...Vanessa Perez..." into the PA. This schmo woke up the entire block, I kid you not. Was there a gas leak? No. Was there a water main break? No. Was there clear and present danger that needed the immediate evacuation of the residents? No. This doofus was just going up and down the block - at 5 AM - yelling some girl's name into his PA without any regard for the fact that this nice, residential street chock full of sleeping children, not to mention this very worn out fellow P.O.
Then, as if this b.s. blasting of his PA system non-stop wasn't enough, I'm looking out my window and right outside one of my neighbors walks up to this guy's squad car and very politely says to this goof of a P.O. "Officer, what's wrong? Is everything ok?" This idiot - yes Mr. PO from 014 (beat tag 1414) you were being an IDIOT - screams at her "Get the F#$% out of my way fat ass." Geez, she too was woken out of a deep sleep apparently and took the initiative to see what was going on and if this P.O. needed help or something and she gets this smart ass remark (and huge disrespect) in the process. Again, she was extremly polite, I heard and saw the entire exchange. I'm standing there in my window feeling really ashamed to be a member of a police dept that treats their community members in such a disappointing, shameful manner. There at 5 AM I was disgusted by my own department. (Not to mention waaaaaayyyyyy pissed about being woken up like that)
Here's my point folks - - until all P.O.s start showing the communities we work in some respect, and until we start being service oriented and committed to making these neighborhoods better and being COURTEOUS & RESPECTFUL to those we've sworn to serve in the process, We are not going to be liked or respected out on these streets. Period. People out there are going to treat us like crap, but many are out there acting like crap so how can they expect the job to get any better??!!!??

FYI, those officers did those videos because they wanted to possibly save some of their friends/coworkers and their families from ending up in the same situation.
My husband did a DUI video against the advise of an attorney who said it would get him nothing. My husbands response was "If it helps one person from going through this, then it is worth it."
And trust me, he got nothing for it other than hoping he could have some good come from a terrible situation. And that was enough for him.

What do you mean by common sense? Are we above the law? Work harder and make legit arrests instead of shortcuts. If we ignore laws then there is no difference between police and criminals. Herrera became a criminal, ignoring the laws and lied, stole and benefited from money he stole. That is not common sense but work of a criminal. many officers work harder to make legit arrests. A video would be more effective than teaching at academy. How can JFED let a felon teach?
Abbate case has a gag order on it that prevents the media or CPD from talking about it etc. I guess the 60 minutes people are exempt from the order.

We chortled at the diabolical Daley's initial response to minimize this can of worms as just "one incident". What a rattlesnake you've got for a mayor. City damage control will be in full throttle spin cycle.
It's time for Chicago to have their version of the "Knapp Commission" (NYPD-1970's)--the "Commission to Investigate Alleged (NYPD) Police Corruption." with full powers to subpoena and to indict for perjury.
One thing is for sure. The last persons to appoint members to your commission would be your mayor and the Chicago Democratic machine. They'd be cutting their own throats. Corruption like yours will probably lead straight to Daley's door.
I also see that someone printed the lyrics to the NYPD tune "Summer in the Ghetto" on another thread. That's the work of our "poet laureate" who is OTJ in a Bklyn North pct. Hysterical as was your version of "West Side Story".

The only time a supervisor ever tried to get me to do any creative writing was when they expected me to do a theft instead of a burglary. Guess what it remained as a burglary, and just got turned in to a different sgt. I never got with the killing crime program. And I truly can't believe his bs about thrown gun verses gun in hand. Most bad guys (and I've had girls with guns, too) throw the gun so as not to get shot, at least in my experience.

If you watched the entire video, SOS sgts were on the scene. LT knew of the raid and rumors were the commander also was aware of this incident. SOS had close supervision. Useless but close monitoring of personnel.

I believe that this was not an Academy staff member rather a Pre-Service Sgt. that was upset about not being able to park in the lot and some others with connections from his/her class that got the hook up with parking passes.
I like the idea of BKLYN NORTH - 9:47 AM about having a commission appointed with no ties to Daley & Chicago Democrats Give subpena powers and O.K. to charge perjury. Start calling in all these bosses on corruption and coverups. How could they not know what was going on?
Daley would have to be the dumbest guy in history to not have a clue.

Nice rumor mongering...actually a lot of the guys (and some girls) do have a lot of tatoos that may seem very intimidating. If you took the time to ask, you might find the stories behind many of them very interesting. No I don't have any, but have seen his which are well done and no swastikas! And if you were close enough to see the alleged swastika, how come you didn't notice all the other things like the memorial, checkerboard and the like. They were also outstanding. The best Lts I ever had. Never once told us to change the circumstances, or whatever that bs that little gangbanger cop on tv said. I already got a CR for this. JK. But while in the academy (while in training) the ADS got a call from the alderman's office because a person complained about siren noise. Training stopped. Yuppies move to the burbs.
