- First up - Some tourists say they were attacked at Chicago's Navy Pier while security guards look on. Two couples say it happened as they were coming off of a midnight cruise at the pier. Tonight, they tell Lilia Chacon how they were jumped, beaten and robbed. It's a Fox Chicago news exclusive.
- Next - A homeless couple was charged for a Monday night robbery and beating in the South Loop that reportedly left a woman in a drug-induced coma. [...]
A fight ensued and the homeless man allegedly grabbed the woman celebrating her birthday and threw her to the ground and beat her in the head, knocking out most of her upper teeth and leaving her critically inured. She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where she is in a reported drug-induced coma, the source said.
It's getting so that the tourists are going to be too damn scared to come by - Navy Pier? That's the number one tourist spot in the state. Downtown at Roosevelt and Wabash? Right off the museum campus and Soldier Field.

About a year ago I took my family to eat at "Millers" on south Wabash. The bums were in front of the place basically trying to strong arm the customers. You can bet the yuppies were afraid of them. The bums were hugging them and grabbing their arms and these asses would go in their pocket and hand them money. I sent my family which included my mother into the restaurant and told the bum not to touch me. He started to get all puffed up and I though for sure I would be fighting with this bum instead of enjoying a night out with my family. The bum backed down and started to argue with a second bum who he accused of working his territory. This bum then pulls a shank out of his sleeve and threats to stab the second bum. You can bet that was the last time I’ll take my family downtown to do anything.

as a long time south loop resident i have seen an increased amount of "homeless" people constantly harrassing pedestrians. my wife and i refer to wabash from harrison to 11th st. as the "gauntlet". we don't even dare go to roosevelt. we have been to our beat meetings to bring it to the attention of our police and yet we see the same vicous predators out here day in day out. i knew it was only a matter of time until someone got hurt. we used to see a policeman walking on michigan state wabash and behind the hilton but have not seen him in quite a while. he used to arrest these people and there is a man and woman team of detectives that saved our neighbor while he was being beaten senseless by 4 black teenagers about ten days ago on 9th and state. i see them riding around occasionally but that's it.
Here's a new one, during a seatbelt mission in 003, a vehicle gets stopped for no seatbelt, driver has no d/l, and no insurance. Well turns out the driver, who is wearing what is similiar to a bucket on his head, states that he is with the Nation of Islam and he is exempt from our driving laws. He even provided the P/O'S with his Islam ID card. Needless to say he was properly advised of OUR LAWS and issued citations. He was also given directions to the pound, where he can pick up his car after getting a D/L and Insurance. And no, i am not making fun of his headdress.

I have a bad feeling about the Navy Pier beating. Off Duty Police Officers do work at Navy Pier. I know one of the assignments at the Pier is to be security at the cruises when they let the passengers off the boats.
I agree with several posters. Abate was charged with Agg Battery. Why were the offenders in this incident not charged with the felony count? The little whore in Abates case didn't even go to the hospital (immediately) in fact she kept working. The victims in this case were hospitalized overnight and had visisble signs of injury.

Lack of coverage is not all that surprising given the race of the offenders and the race of the victims. Why would a white couple being beaten and robbed by a group of blacks be newsworthy? How many case reports have you taken where the offender was black and the victim was white? Its only a hate crime if its a racist white group targeting blacks, hispanics, or gays. Whites are not protected by any of these laws nor are the offenders in crimes prosecuted nearly as harshly as if it were a white offender. Thats just life. White mans guilt. We need to start treating every offender the same. If a dude beats up someone that doesnt require any medical attention then its a misdemeanor. If someone gets their teeth kicked out, then its a felony. Should it matter if in the first case it was a drunken idiot off duty piece of shit? it's not a surprise to me that these things are happening in the south loop. i thought with the mission being re-located things would improve. i have given up on attempting to walk with my two little ones aged 6 and 3 outside of our dearborn park neighborhood. i see the same guys every day demanding people give them money or cigarettes etc. as they pass by. if they don't get what they are demanding the person is subjected to foul language and the like. we used to walk to the sled hill at 9th and michigan and sometimes to the fountain but i just don't want to jeapodize my children anymore or subject them to the sight of these people urinating in full view of anyone walking by. at the C.A.P.S. meetings we have been to they always tell us about the aggressive bike patrols that are utilized to combat this problem. time and again i have seen the bikes but they never stop and encounter these people. it's a shame this girl had to be hurt so severly to bring these problems to light.

The 10-12 shots fired that the previous poster heard were not on Prospect, but on Loomis from 110-107th St. Man was shot at 7 times, hit once in the stomach, and the getaway car kept firing rounds as it went north on Loomis from 110th St. We are talking about a shooting in the Racine Courts, not exactly the cream of the crop, but good enough for Paul Vallas to declare another Honor roll student struck down when he should be inside doing homework. Sad. There are millions of great stories about yesteryear in the neighborhoods we had to flee. Your post reminded me that years ago I bought birthday flowers for my Mom and sisters from the florist formerly on the northeast corner of 107th Prospect. The owner's were a very nice family and the florist shop/greenhouse was a Mom & Pop & Their Kid's family enterprise, but like millions of other Chicago sad stories, the shit came in and the good left town. BTW, it cost $14.00 to park at museum of science and industry and $19.00 at navy pier, HOLY COW. We had 10 people and 2 cars, it was a $66.00 parking day plus $300 more for food, entertainment, dinner, entrance fees.

I was at Navy Pier a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night to attend a fund-raiser at the Grand Ballroom. My wife and I left the event around 11:00 PM and let me tell you, the mutts were out in force on the Pier. Every year I seem to see more and more gansta "diversity" in areas of the downtown where it was rare to see these worthless mopes before. Navy Pier is a good example. I look to see some homeboy shootouts there before too long....that will put a major crimp in all those tourist cruise boats' business.

My family and I live near the lakefront. I am ALWAYS armed and carry a set of cuffs while off-duty in street clothes.
I recommend the following with excellent proven results. As soon as I sense the panhandler's approach, I smile and tell him "God bless you" before they even start to mumble and beg. They usually reply in kind and go away.
If they persist, I ask them if they can help ME--my house is in foreclosure, yada, yada. 99% of the time, that does it.
For the aggressive assholes, particularly those who try to physically touch me (simple battery), I announce my office.
As they wisely go away, I wish them "a nice day".
No problems to date.
On extremely rare occasions, when I encounter an obvious but silent panhandler on the way into the market, I may give him a dollar when I depart, explaining that his silence was the reason for the gift.
Another deterrent would be offering him money upon completion of chores (shoveling snow, mowing the lawn, waxing my car, etc.). To date, I haven't had any takers.

Just keep in mind that as much as you guys hate your jobs and the city shits on your face daily - you still have the right and ability to defend yourself with deadly force. Us disarmed citizens are left with flight, and weapons of opportunity. I myself carry a collapsible baton. I know that's technically illegal but it's a lot less illegal than carrying a gun, and at least it's something. It's saved me twice already from street people. Ironically enough the last time was on a bridge (Randolph?) when I was approached at night by a guy asking for money, and when I refused, he threatened to beat me up. I whipped out the baton, dropped my bag and took a step towards him to put him in striking range, and he backs off with a slur of obscenities and tells me almost verbatim, "That we gone get all y'all niggas soon. Second:Their was no one,I repeat no One shot at 107th and Church. A man was shot at 1400 w. 109th Pl. His friends went to the area of 10763 S. Church and fired approx. 20 rounds striking no one.
Third: If you allow your family to drive 107th from vincennes, you Sir are a grade A mush. If you are the Police you need to get better at your job,because vincennes and church are very bad and have been for some time. Have your family take 111th to longwood. The area east of Longwood makes for many a good crime. By the way Leavitt and Bell are more than five blocks from Church, as well as being like a different part of the world. Here's a new one, during a seatbelt mission in 003, a vehicle gets stopped for no seatbelt, driver has no d/l, and no insurance. Well turns out the driver, who is wearing what is similiar to a bucket on his head, states that he is with the Nation of Islam and he is exempt from our driving laws. He even provided the P/O'S with his Islam ID card. Needless to say he was properly advised of OUR LAWS and issued citations. He was also given directions to the pound, where he can pick up his car after getting a D/L and Insurance. And no, i am not making fun of his headdress.

Same thing happened to my partner and I about a year ago on a t-stop on 95th and Ashland. He ranted about not being a U.S citizen even though his only I.D was a U.S passport. He said he didn't need D/L nor Insurance based on his faith. We TVB'd him and towed his car after we found out he was suspended. Later he tried to sue us for $176 million in federal court, cause he claimed we failed to recognize his religion, Judge threw that B.S out. Loved his hat too, it was like a shriners hat. So ticket every shithead who claims this shit.

I took my wife/son and my mother down town tonite to eat at portillo's on ohio/clark . . . i stated "no, leave us alone,"and continued to walk, he then walked up behind us and stated "you talked nasty to me, i just wanted some money mother fuckers" . . . i spoted a cpd wagon..I flagged them down and told them I was a off duty and please keep this ass hole away from us, he was asking for money..they called him to the wagon and talked to him while my son and i went into portillo's.. Its a hate crime - against women. The woman was beaten severely and knocking out a woman's teeth is "in style" among cowardly woman beaters. They should be charged with felonies and attempted murder - I am not PO, I am a woman who if I didn't practice several martial arts - I'd have no teeth and probably would be in a coma or beaten to death.

Sometimes citizens take the streets back. Anyone remember about 5 years ago or so the deal with a woman on Laramie a few blocks north of the Ike? She stopped at a corner on Laramie and some shirtbird breaks her passenger door window and runs off with her purse. Cops show up and are writing up paper when some guy comes up with the purse and its contents. He said he chased the turd a few blocks to an alley and the guy dropped the purse and kept running. The guy returns the purse, he gets in his car and takes off-NFI. A few minutes later police repond to raio call to a nearby alley and find the turd shot a few times. He says some guy shot him for no reason and describes the guy who returned the purse to the smash and grab scene. No suspects, unsolved shooting and pookie got better several months later. Lesson learned: Beware of the armed citizen pookie. It was a misdemeanor weapons beef then and many of us would take the hit. Now its a felony but the way the City is going, maybe in certian situtations some us will take a felony hit.

I'm not sure about all the home front ranting and west v east of Western, but every time 22 comes up, going to 7-11 gets thrown out there. Are 022 coppers the only ones who get free pop? I've worked around the city and theres plenty of places where coppers congregate for free pop or coffee. Every district has one or if you are in a real ghetto district you go over the line to a close spot. Find something else to pimp on. You sound like a 5th grader.
