Very good observation. There has been unofficial re-districting by cline and his crew but now is the time the powers to be will do it officially.

this could be a good thing-- how can you write movers,parkers,curfews,etc... if you are running from job to job all of your tour because manpower is so low. instead of 15 codes a night, it can now be 20 or 25 and check off with goose eggs. capt's, lt's, and sgt's know what's going on-- they listen to the radio all night-- so when the accountability people start crying that activity is so low, it's incumbent upon the bosses to explain why.

If you take in account the number of police officers who have retired, quit or died who have not been replaced... We already have 1,800 "laid off" on the police department!
When your only paying a diminished police department of less than 11,000... Figure it the same as 1,800+ laid off.
So I guess nobody anywhere else on the City payroll will have to be laid off.

SCC this patrol officer is hanging it up. I am going to give up my star and become a freelance bodyguard. I am taking a years leave of absence and I don't think I will return to the job to be honest. I have applied for a course at Blackwater and for a membership in American Society for Industrial Security. I have managed to save up one years gross salary. It helps having only one family car, a stay at home wife, a 1999 Ford Explorer, and my three kids in top flight public magnet schools including the Illinois Math and Science Academy. That is how I saved a years gross salary if anyone is curious.
Between the Irish and bohunk welfare tongs, the female inside slot whores, the HDO hoodlums and the do nothing brotha mafias, a person who wants to do the job and compete fairly for promotions and career progression doesn't have a chance in hell on this job. I agree with the 6:00 am post. I believe any district that doesn't have a new station is going to be split up. Gee, which lucky districts get the chunks of englewood? I find it hard to believe they'll they'll break up the Deering station (9th District). Twelve and thirteen are much slower districts than in years past. They gone too.
If they laid off our civilian helicopter pilot, they would save $100,000 in wages and whatever it costs for his leased car.
They could save even more by eliminating the inspectors, returning them to their actual rank of Lieutenant and thereby filling a bunch of Lieutenant spots without making any promotions. The inspectors take home cars would now be available for use by others on all three watches at no extra charge. This would probably save us money indirectly since they would still be in the payroll albeit in a different role.
Next, we could axe all of the District managers since they really are not needed and didn't even exist until about ten years ago anyway. This would give us back about 2 million dollars a year.
We could easily eliminate the CAPS Lieutenants and just have Sergeants on both watches reporting to the watch commander. This would be 25 spots at Lieutenants pay of about 100,000 a year each. Another 2.5 million a year.
The entire 023 District could be eliminated and merged with 019. It would still be the quietest District in the entire city. This would save untold millions of dollars. The land that the existing station is sitting on could be sold along with the lot next door that is slated to be the new 023 District. This would generate more millions of dollars.
In about three minutes, I have reduced the Department budget by tens of millions of dollars and have not affected our production at all. I'm not that smart, so somebody in management must be really dumb not to see this themselves!!!

SOS and TRU were ways of moving manpower without the touching powderkeg issue of redrawing district boundaries. That is such a potentially hot political issue that no one wants to touch. It needs to be done and it is overdue.
However, a new district means that first, a new station has to be sited and built. And that a station has a staff, which takes away from the bodies available for street assignment. And it creates another bunch of spots, like a D/C and a District Manager, plus a whole bunch of other paper shuffling spots.
About 4-5 years ago there was talk of opening a 26th district, taking the east end of 008, the west end of 007 and the south end of 009.
What a fun place that would be.
But why should the people of the west end of 008 be stripped of police? Not that there is much coverage out there anyway.
And just imagine the firestorm if there was an effort to take manpower from 016 and send it to 011 or 015. With the taxes those people pay up there, who could blame them.

Was at Midway the other talked to a "SWAT" guy who was working there! He told me as a "bonus" for working swat you could work 2 of your days off for overtime at the airport, and they could switch your schedule to make sure you worked 2 days per week! Plus the extra pay and this, hey FLOP no seniority needed as usual? How about this feel good sweet deal? Even better the swat guys are not allowed to carry their weapons into the airport unless something happens! Leadership? OK from who? The Keystone cops? Clout as usual rearing its ugly head!

Overall, arrests are not down b/c of the Cossi issue. I asked a couple of guys on my watch how the felt about Cossi and only 1 of the 10 that I asked knew what I was talking about.
Arrests are down b/c the city has hired garbage over the past 5 years. The new hires have no desire to arrest people, because them they have to go to court, and they have no desrie attending court. Maybe 20% hired over the last five years are good police officers, the others are a waste and should be laid off.

I don't recall seeing it mentioned before but a few weeks ago the city issued a "severance package" offer available to non-union city employees. If chosen, the offer had to be accepted between August 16 through September 1.
Since that offer was issued many district managers city-wide have been burning up medical days. Seems as though they're definitely in the hot seat. Crossing guard supervisors too.
Will anyone miss them? Most of them are absent on the medical now with no apparent affect on district operations. If any evidence was needed to prove how useless these clout babies are they just provided it themselves.

Was at Midway the other talked to a "SWAT" guy who was working there! He told me as a "bonus" for working swat you could work 2 of your days off for overtime at the airport, and they could switch your schedule to make sure you worked 2 days per week! The story included a list of various body parts covered under the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission. If a bulldozer drives over your foot and you lose a big toe, you can get 35 weeks off work. Your hand gets lopped off, you warrant 190 weeks.
But testicles are deemed to be especially precious. If a man loses one testicle as a consequence of an accident on the job, he can take 50 weeks off work -- almost a whole year to recover from this terrible impairment.
If he loses both testicles, he is allowed to lounge about the house with 150 weeks worth of pay. I guess that's because the loss of two testicles would effectively neuter the poor guy and the trauma of suddenly turning into a castrato would understandably be too much for any red-blooded, meat-eating Chicago male laborer. Suddenly you're talking in a high-pitched voice and your mom doesn't recognize you when you phone her.

I couldn't agree more! I live in 019 and still haven't seen the beat car for over a month on any of the watches! I have called regarding unattended vehicles and illegal parkers and NOTHING IS DONE! I started to call and have the cars towed myself! POLICING MY OWN NEIGHBROHOOD is what it has come down to!!! I have told numerous 019 officers about the problems with the Latin Kings on the west part of the district but they never cared and sure enough the Kings tagged several buildings and are representing heavily in the area. The only car that comes by at about 10-10:30 p.m. is an unmarked, and lately I haven't seen those officers probably cuz they are sent to another district.

I couldn't agree more! I live in 019 and still haven't seen the beat car for over a month on any of the watches! I have called regarding unattended vehicles and illegal parkers and NOTHING IS DONE! I started to call and have the cars towed myself! POLICING MY OWN NEIGHBROHOOD is what it has come down to!!! I have told numerous 019 officers about the problems with the Latin Kings on the west part of the district but they never cared and sure enough the Kings tagged several buildings and are representing heavily in the area. The only car that comes by at about 10-10:30 p.m. is an unmarked, and lately I haven't seen those officers probably cuz they are sent to another district.

There are some really weird coppers there. They are almost clannish. They think they are better than everyone, including other police. God forbid you ask them to do something, they throw a hissy fit, because they are already soooooooo busy.
Also, if you are looking for a 019 beat car, check out the former white hen (now 7-11) at 2700 n lincoln. You'll most likely find half a dozen there at any given time.

If anyone is against anyone, it should be the people who care about this city and those who don't. Those who care about this job and those who don't. There should be no division between ranks, sworn and civilian; we all took this job (in any capacity) in the hopes of something better for our city and our families.
Bickering is getting us nowhere... and they know it and it's what they want. Divide and conquer.

I wholeheartedly agree. It's complete bullshit that Swat gets their own slot in O.T. at Midway and O'hare. A lot of these Swat people don't have anywhere near the seniority the rest of us have to have to get the airports. How can this be justified? It's not even for show as they don't have their "heavy" weapons with them. What a demoralizing joke.

This does not apply to Chicago Police officers we do not get all the benefits that workers compensation covers. Aunt Bea thought he was a great leader. But he has one problem. He cannot work with other humans. Yes it was a play on words, Oh little one. He needs to be reassigned to a office at 35th street and work alone on some nonsense. I will try to use simple language the next time.

SWAT is getting airport overtime because they have proven that they get the job done! Don't blame us for not carrying the big guns; it was originally agreed that we would walk the airports in our SWAT uniforms, with the big guns, but someone at City Hall thought that it was "too intimidating," and changes were made to make us into the fuzzy/warm police. Don't worry. When some serious shit breaks out at either airport, they'll be screaming for us to break out the big toys, and we will.
