West Side Wreck
Six Chicago Police officers were seriously injured in an accident late Saturday on the West Side.
Two squad cars crashed into each other near South Central Park Avenue and West Roosevelt Road about 11:15 p.m., Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said.
The officers were taken in serious condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, and Mount Sinai Hospital, Knight said. There were three officers in each car...

This is typical of the Chicago police. They do not obey traffic signals when on normal patrol, and they turn on their sirens to avoid sitting at a red light or simply cut through lights. I have been nearly hit in my car or run over while walking across the street by cops who are not obeying the law. I have seen them cut through crossing gates with a train approaching just just to get to the next red light. So they were not responding to a call.
Jody Weis needs to train his cops how to respond safely to incidents because they are reckless and arrogant in their driving making them unsafe on the road for the average person they are supposed to protect.
The fact that they collided is symptom of a problem with the police dept and their training. When aciidents happen at intersections, the average person is blamed. Who is to blame for this accident, the traffic signal?
THIS IS MY RESPONSE!
It's just like an uniformed citizen to make accusations and second guess an officer's actions without knowing all the facts! Were you standing at the intersection and witnessed what happened? Were you monitoring the police radio? Better yet are you clairvoyant and do you have the abililty to read the officers minds?
I wasn't there nor was I monitoring the radio but those officers (if you bother to watch the news and or read other papers) were actually responding to an in progress (priority) call of a person with a gun. Was there an officer already there in a foot chase with an armed offender calling for help? Was an officer calling for help because he was struggling with the offender? Did they swerve and run into each other to avoid other vehicles and or pedestrains that failed to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle? Or were the officers responding quickly in an attempt to simply help what ever citizen (like you) called asking for help.
In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'm an officer.
There has been plenty of times where I have been responding to an in progress emergency call (while monitoring the radio) where other units have already responded and given a disregard to additional responding units. This may be one of many instances where officers who have emergency equipment on (lights/sirens) go through an intersection and then shut them off a block or two up.
Instead of being sympathetic or compassionate of their injuries and health you seem content that this has happened. You seem like a miserable person and Jim, I hope that you never need one of these "typical chicago police officers" in an emergency situation.
The citizens are lucky to still have some officers working and not participating in "depolicing" like most others are. Don't get me wrong most officers respond to calls but they are being reactive. As opposed to being proactive and actually trying to deter and or prevent the crime from ocurring in the first place. In this day and age with a new administration that does not back or support their officers and with "citizens" like yourself whining and complaining about officers even driving down the street do you actually think officers are going to go above and beyond there call of duty?
We took an oath and that is to serve and protect. That is exactly what we are going to be doing only a little different.
For example, we're no longer going to sit in a bush and try to catch someone suspected in selling drugs. We are simply going to respond if someone calls and approach the person and ask them "are you selling drugs"? If they respond "no" then we are simply going to tell them to have a nice day and our investigation is over. Do you think an officer is going to get out of his car, pat the person down and shag them like in the past? What for? So unappreciative citizens (liberals) like you could fabricate a complaint on how the "typical chicago police officer" is violating the non-tax paying "citizens" civil rights!
As for Jody Weis, he needs to train himself as well as a whole new command staff on how to regain morale, lower a nearly 20% increase in murders, lower a nearly 40% increase in shootings and in increase of nearly 11,000 calls of persons with guns (all of which have occurred since he has taken office in the last 9 months).

The lesson that should come from this is watch those blind corners. Slow down and be cognizant of your surroundings. If you get in a crash, whether you get hurt or not, you are out of the game. You are of no help because you can't get there to be of help. Slow down, watch the corners, remember, there is a dozen other guys and girls in blue flying to the same call as you are, and the closer you get to the scene the greater the risk becomes. No one is telling you to dog it, just drive within your capabilities and that of your car. Also in regards to the cars, they are nothing more than a family sedan with lights and sirens. There are no souped up engines, no beefier brakes, no supersport suspensions, just a family sedan with lights and sirens. It is very easy to out drive these cars. Use your head, slowdown, watch the corners and wear your seatbelt. The life you save may be your own. Prayers for the injured officers, may they recover quickly.

There has been NO Defensive Driving refresher courses available to P.O.'s, and I haven't had one in 25 yrs. since I left the police Academy. ALL our training, firearms, driving, etc; sucks, as it's always the CHEAPEST that the City can get by with. It's no wonder the City [read, US CITY TAXPAYERS] get sued so much, our guys are not getting even half of the proper training we are probably budgeted for, much less FEDERAL dollars given to the City for training programs that either 1-Never Occur, 2- only the "Clouted" get to go to, 3-the training is abbreviated or given in a condensed manner, ie. Roll Call Training Videos, to Hurry Up, Hurry Up, always to benefit the City. Take your time, do training properly, be professional about additional and refresher training? HA-HA, Forget It !! It's just the old Hurry Up and do things fucked up as usual, not properly, as other real law enforcement agencies do. Just Rush, rush, rush, to get troops back on the street, so's we don't have to hire any more manpower, or make the "Clouted Ones" do some Police Work for once in their annointed careers....

The incident from 022 last night involved a gangbanger (Ambrose, I think, not positive) and his brother from Oak Forest who hang out in Mt Greenwood, recruiting for the faction they hope to set up.
A couple of people were near Bourbon St, on the Chicago side, talking with a couple of M-1's, when the gangbanger and his brother approached, drunk out of their minds, yelling racial stuff, deriding the people talking with the M-1's. Off duty PO approached, said who he was, and told the mutts to back off. Everyone left, but the gangbangers followed the people about two blocks and rammed their car. Everyone got out, the gangbangers immediately attacked, punching and kicking the driver of the car that was hit. The previously mentioned off duty PO drives by, sees what happened, and yells to back off. The gangbangers immediately attack him, kicking and punching. He is losing the battle, so the PO's wife jumps in to shield him, and they work her over. 2211 midnights was flagged down a block away by someone, raced over there, and got the gangbangers as they tried to run away (Thank you, gentlemen). Felony Aggravated Battery and Hate Crime being pursued the last I heard.....

We are swamped--as in being assigned 500 cases a year. I have a 1001 things to do a day. If I can get there faster,safely, by going around traffic or through a light, it is for the benefit of the public, not me going to lunch.
I get cross-eyed looks while I am driving while on my cell phone...condider this...the city issued it to me. I HAVE to carry it. I'ts 99.9% of the time not personal...it's victims, informants, bosses, etc.

Your gun does not have to be in a safe. It has to BE sarfe... unloaded, stored separate from ammo, in a locked room, or in a locked box, with a trigger lock etc. If we had to have a safe, I'm the first in line for the free 'first issue'....

In the interview, Weis states that we had a "phenomenal year" last year (with regard to the low number of murders in 2007), and that "this year" we will have one of the "5 lowest homicide rates in the past 43 years." Does he even realize how pathetic he sounds, trying to make our scheduled surpassing of 500 murders this year (surpassing NYPD and by far surpassing LAPD) sound like a PLUS? He's written off this year's violence statistics. Further, he discusses his plans to cut violence next year by way of the MSF, with claims that they are recovering an average of one gun per night....gosh, I wonder how many are recovered in the districts daily by officers who still have to answer traffic crashes, doemstics, shoplifters, etc. during their tour of duty?

I live in 016 and walk my dog every day in "cop land north". My experience is that as sad as this incident could have been, it is not a surprise. Cops drive like fucking pricks... emergency or not on duty or off cops in general drive like assholes, ignoring any traffic control device creating dangerous situations. I personally have almost been hit several times to the point that I now stop at the crosswalk, stand still, make eye contact with the driver and only proceed after a COMPLETE STOP is attained... usually what happens is I stop, car comes flying up, taps the brakes, and blows right through the stop sign... and low and behold Id say 99 times out of a hundred a FOP medallion is present! I hate how cops drive and I only wish someone would have the balls to sit here and hammer away indiscriminately... learn how to drive you fucking pricks! A stop sign is not a suggestion! Hopefully it doesnt take a tragedy here to wake you clowns up! STOP DRIVING LIKE ASSHOLES!!! This is my weekend so I havnt seen the report but if I had to guess I would say It's the guys from 115th st. just east of lawndale south side of the street. They did the same thing to a cc sheriff last month, except they hit him with the car. Gang car flagged down by the victim chased the offenders who bailed from the truck south of 115th caught the passenger but was only able to get reckless conduct since the victim insisted he was the passenger.

Ive seen you walking your dog in "cop land north" and was wondering if you were also leaving for the white house with obama. if you are scared to drive don't do it. ride your bike or don't leave your house. these police officers aren't worried about peoples feelings and they arent worried if people are walking their dogs, they worry about things that matter, like making sure their brothers and sisters don't get shot at by a "dog walker" on the west side. granted they will learn from this as police officers just like anything else that happens in the dept.BUT officers, do not be afraid to drive in a manner that will get you to the people that need you... even if you have to hurt someones feelings by cutting them off in traffic.

Just last week, Channel 7 (Charles Thomas) did a News report about the increase in crime in the 13th District. They've been pulling the Gang Teams out of the slower districts even before J-Fed. Leo had all the Area 4 gang teams in 10 or 11, most of the time!

I was a young lad and I got the privilege to work with a officer with 20+ years on and he always told me "not so fast" "slow down, what's the rush?" Then he finally said, "20-25 mph driving around. 30-35 mph driving to a call. Officer calling for help, don't worry, we'll be the first ones there."

And for the guys complaining about "hurt feelings", how ironic! If you re-read 10pm's post, he was talking about how certain ( not all ) off duty cops in this neighborhood drive: as if they are indestructible, and untouchable. He never mentioned on duty cops responding to calls.
I was driving home from a friend's house down Devon and had cars with FOP shit on them blowing past me on both sides doing well over 70! If a deer had stepped into the road, we'd all be on here saying nice things about the douchebags that basically committed suicide.

Your gun does not have to be in a safe. It has to BE sarfe... unloaded, stored separate from ammo, in a locked room, or in a locked box, with a trigger lock etc. If we had to have a safe, I'm the first in line for the free 'first issue'....

First, let me say “thank you” for serving our country. I am proud of my country, and I am even more proud of those who have served it.
I, too, have had the pleasure of serving in the military (Army – Ranger) during a time of war (Panama/Gulf War 1) and know where you are coming from when you say you would rather be with your fellow Marines. The intense loyalties you developed, the trust of your life to another, the fact that you all were in the shit together, it does build up an esprit de corps that can not be taking lightly.
However, I am certain that you and your fellow Marines at some point during your tour of duty bitched or bashed the establishment, whether that was your Gunny, your butter bar Lieutenant, the CO, or even the Commander in Chief. Ball busting and bashing have been in the military since the Civil War.
It is no different here.
What the people are doing here on the SCC Blog is trying to pass down a lesson to you and all of the other officers that read this. This Blog has taken over the bathroom wall of the days of old, and sometimes, as in this case, comments here can provide some very good information or insight to keep us ALL safe.
Nobody has taken pleasure that officers are hurt – at least I have not read a comment that could be construed that way. However, what a lot of your fellow officers are saying is an important lesson. Kind of like the turtle and the hare.
Officers were hurt in an accident, I, and I assume you, were not there. However, without even knowing ALL of the facts surrounding the accident, still a reasonable person can formulate a theory that the speed of the squad cars and the nature of the call (man with a gun) can probably be attributed to one, if not the, primary factors of the accident.
All I have read on the Blog, and in between the lines as well, is that your fellow Officers ARE offering you comradeship, by asking you to please slow down, please MAKE it to the emergency, and to being safe. My fellow officer and former Marine, isn’t that the type of comrades you want? Ones who look out for your well being?
Trust me, nobody is being a useless fuck in offering you good advice, and I know you and I will meet at the next 10-1. Let's just be certain that we get there so we can help our fellow Officer out, just like you would always help out your fellow Marines, and I would help out my fellow Rangers.

There has been NO Defensive Driving refresher courses available to P.O.'s, and I haven't had one in 25 yrs. since I left the police Academy. ALL our training, firearms, driving, etc; sucks, as it's always the CHEAPEST that the City can get by with. It's no wonder the City [read, US CITY TAXPAYERS] get sued so much, our guys are not getting even half of the proper training we are probably budgeted for, much less FEDERAL dollars given to the City for training programs that either 1-Never Occur, 2- only the "Clouted" get to go to, 3-the training is abbreviated or given in a condensed manner, ie. Roll Call Training Videos, to Hurry Up, Hurry Up, always to benefit the City. Take your time, do training properly, be professional about additional and refresher training? HA-HA, Forget It !! It's just the old Hurry Up and do things fucked up as usual, not properly, as other real law enforcement agencies do. Just Rush, rush, rush, to get troops back on the street, so's we don't have to hire any more manpower, or make the "Clouted Ones" do some Police Work for once in their annointed careers....

There are tons of people around that will deliberately try to get their junk-mobiles hit by CPD any way possible, get a slippery attorney and claim fake injuries,cause they know the City will pay them, even if they are wrong. Cops can be held to punitive damages however, which is a good reason to get updated training, refresher courses, and be sure to stay within the Dept. issued Vehicle Handling Guidelines and the Ill. Vehicle Code laws. Remember, it's different if you go to court for punitive damage lawsuits, than having jerk-off liar get his or her free money from the City. If you lose, YOU PAY. So drive safe, be aware, don't take chances, carry a camera, take photos if involved, also photos of Joe -Phoney and his ride, including lic. plate #, and other occupants in the phoney's ride. Document everything you can.
