All SUV's?

We certainly hope there's a whole bunch of Driving School penciled in over the next three years:
  • The Daley administration has signed a $59.2 million contract with a suburban dealership that could pave the way for the Chicago Police Department to convert most of its squad car fleet by 2011 to Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs favored by Police Supt. Jody Weis.

The three-year contract for up to 2,000 SUVs was awarded last month to Advantage Chevrolet of southwest suburban Hodgkins. The dealership is owned by an African American, but has gross revenues too high to qualify for city certification as a minority business enterprise.

As a result, Advantage Chevrolet applied for a waiver of the requirement that 16.9 percent of the contract, or $9.9 million, be set aside for minority subcontractors.

While we welcome the addition of new vehicles to a pathetically run Fleet Operation, we'd like to point out that probably over 60% of officers haven't ever driven a high-center-of-gravity vehicle. Probably 80% haven't even moved a squadrol since their Academy days.

Again, for the benefit of a few trolls who are going to think cops bitch about everything under the sun - Yay New Cars! Now how about a real effort at training with the new tool we're given?

UPDATE: Is our math wrong? $59.2 million divided by 2,000 SUVs is $29,600 per vehicle. How does this compare to a Crown Vic, Impala or other sedan? And remember, these are two-wheel drive Tahoes. No extras.

HURRAY!!! I love driving the Tahoe!! It's more roomy, being up higher you can see into vehicles so you have the tactical advantage, drivers move out of your way better when you go down the street with the Tahoe. The only problem I see is that you cannot accelerate as quickly! But you still can get that vehicle moving!! It will be safer for the officers because its a much heavier vehicle. Then we will be able to put our M-16's in the vehicles. Military policing is our future!! Forget this pansy stuff, burglar alarms, noise complaints--maybe the department is transitioning us to be the real police!

This is what I do not understand. Daley want businesses to up in the city but they go outside the city to buy their cars. They couldn't find a Chevy dealership in the city that could handle this contract? Last time they went outside the city to buy Fords.
Ever business owner within the city should be pissed at his a$$

So Chief Weis is on the record for saying that the SUV is less likely to get stuck in the winter snows.

This is unacceptable. What's wrong with a new Chevy or Ford Crown Vic 4-door sedan?

I demand a cost analysis including both the vehicle and the cost of fuel for the average lifetime of the vehicle.

I can see a small portion of the police fleet (SWAT, CSI, etc.) using SUVs.

However, being a lifelong Chicagoan, I must ask: Who's getting greased for the conversion to Tahoes? All-wheel drive?

The snow and ice is a lame excuse that just doesn't wash. While the uninformed out-of-towner may hold Chicago winter's in the same category as Antartica, there are several large U.S. cities (Buffalo, Minneapolis-St. Paul, etc.) that have more severe winter climates.

Can ANYONE cite VALID reasons why the CPD should convert to the SUV?

What's the REAL reason/$ for the Tahoes?

As far as Chicago Police not being armed with assault rifles at airports and potential jihadist targets, Mayor Daley is delusional. As in New York City, many citizens find the heavily armed police as a reassuring deterrent--not "intimidating".

Frankly, Daley's myopic attitude towards all firearms in the hands of police and law-abiding citizens is just plain cockeyed.

Based on the abuse that the latest generation of police must tolerate in the name of political correctness, Daley's priority should be to to increase salaries to at least 20% over the next 5 years.

In today's upside down world, I can't understand why even the most dedicated and talented citizens would aspire to be a Chicago cop.

God bless our police force. It's a totally thankless job if there ever was one.

the cpd hopes to have the gas guzzling SUV's replace all squad cars by 2011. At the end of the article there's was a link I read: Chevy is stopping production of the Tahoe by 2011. I wonder how much parts will cost after they are discontinued?

Alls I ask is for some new crown vics. The impalas blow, I hear the dodge's used in the suburbs blow as well, but I've seen a lot of banged up crown vics involved in some REAL bad accidents where the officers walked out alive... hurt but still alive. Now imagine switching a couple of those bad accidents and picture the officer driving a top heavy, prone to roll over SUV instead.

What's the gas mpg for a suburban? I'll bet a lot shittier than a car.
What's the cost of a suburban? I'll bet a lot more than a car.
A suburban is a lot bigger than a car. I'll bet a lot easier for a bad guy doing bad things to spot from a distance rather than a car.
I'm all for having lets say 1 or 2suburban's per district to possible carry in the back cones, jumper cables, extra reports, dog noose, extra ammo, leg shackles, etc.. Priorities should be with paying the police and settling the contract not to mention the hiring of several thousand officers that we're short. The hell with being all cool in the eyes of Jody having CPD and it's officers driving the streets with SUV's.

That will kill our already restrictive chase policy. Because these are considered trucks, they are prohibited from chasing.
And are they going to be 2wd? That defeats the whole purpose of these vehicles....
On the other issue of the high center of gravity, I am guessing that there will be no additional training. There was an issue with the Chevy Impalas a while back. They were ordered with a bigger engine. In order to compensate, the subframe was actually lower than the stock Impalas. This became an issue when driving down streets that had been stripped in preparation for repaving. The sewer covers sat higher than the rest of the street. The Impalas did not have the clearance to drive over them. As a result, some of them sustained undercarriage damage and also airbag activation. There were injuries in some cases as a result. However, none of the officers were made aware of this condition. The department didn't care and would still make the accidents "preventable" even though the officers were never trained in operating procedures of these lower framed cars.

I thought you could buy police vehicle directly from the manufacturer. Particularly in that large of a number (any other departments member know if that's the case?). Does the state buy their cars from a dealership also? If you can buy from the manufacturer, why would the city be buying them from a dealership unless they want that dealership to reap a windfall of commission profits.

Just my (humble) opinion...
I drove the SUV and yes, it does NOT handle like a car. I only hope that some 'positive' things come of this.
IF you realize it's almost like driving a truck, perhaps you'll 'slow down' a bit responding to hot jobs. It's best to get there safely rather than sooner. We've all heard that were useless to a PO on a 10-1 if we don't get there. Second, they are more highly visible when 'going-to-blue' as the one I had also had strobes in front and rear. Unfortunately, we all know people still don't respect emergency vehicles and/or don't get out of the way. There is room in the back for storage but Sgt's are 'still' waiting for the Ballistic Shield that was supposed to be kept in the late sgt's vehicles to facilitate response and use. Still Notta! One of the neat features that I found by accident was that the rear hatch opened up to provide a roof like effect when opened. It came in handy when it was raining and I 'had' to be outside for a while. I just stood under the hatch, stayed fairly dry and was still able to keep track of the crime scene. Now if someone could just design a removable (snap or velcro) clear plastic or windowed 3 sided cover to retain the heat from the interior while standing outside (WHEN NECESSARY) it would even be that much more functional (Mobile Command Post, warming/staging area etc) Yes, I realize that the exhaust needs to be directed out the side to facilitate this, but it's just an idea. Bottom line....Whatever you're driving (car, SUV, horse or Segway) be careful out there.

This is a real issue. To drive this type of vehicle safely, one needs special training. No Police Officer, will admit, they are a little uneasy driving one. Years ago I was trained by the CTA. They gave an excellent 3day course in how to drive a big vehicle down narrow streets. How to us mirrors correctly, etc etc etc.
The mayor has designed the streets, so they are even narrower. Flower Pots, in the middle, and at intersections. There will be a lots of issues with these vehicles.

You will be held accountable for your actions!!!

I have a hard time believing that a whole lot of training is going to be required for cops to learn to drive an SUV.

Drive the same way you would drive a car, at a safe speed, and avoid erratic maneuvers. generally good advcie for driving anyway.

Are these 2 wheel drive? If so, you may find they are not as good in snow and on ice as your existing vehicles.

Let’s see here, we just paid over 59 million big ones to a dealership for 2,000 TAHOES and General Order 03-02 Addendum 1 specifically states the following:

III. PROHIBITIONS

Members will not engage in a motor vehicle pursuit while operating squadrols, covert vehicles, vans, other truck chassis vehicles (including the Chevrolet Tahoe), three-wheel motorcycles, and police all-purpose vehicles.

So if a murder suspect is being followed by a tahoe, do they just stop and let them go?? I would. Then when the murder offender gets away and kills another person, guess who is in the trickbag and facing a lawsuit? The blueshirt driving the tahoe. WE CAN'T WIN!!!!!!! POLICY GROUP wake up. jack said Chevy tahoes as a beat car is a roomy, tactical advantage of height and size when approaching suspects/ offenders and shopping truck space.
I've driven the vehicle for some time and because of weight it will plow thru snow but it is a rear wheel drive vehicle and will spin out easily when quickly accelerating.
The need is for a computer controlled four wheel drive and a better choice of fuel economy of a vehicle. remember the recent gas prices?
Say good by to the sqaudrols as you'll be doing your own transports.

Okay, who is this dealer related to? EVERYBODY is giving these cars away, due to high gas mileage, so why this particular dealer?

And don't say it's to beat the sales tax. First, if a car is purchased new and delivered/titled to a Chicago address, sales tax is still added. Second, government entities don't pay sales tax, no matter where they purchase or where it's delivered.

I repeat, follow the money. Who is this car dealer? (Oh, and, yay, new cars. I can't use a high-profile Tahoe for what I do, but yay for you guys who will eventually get one in six months or so.)

Consumer Reports says: "Handling is cumbersome, stopping distances are long...Body lean is controlled, but steering feel lacks feedback and precision. The Tahoe felt clumsy and posted a low speed through our emergency avoidance maneuver but was ultimately secure thanks to standard stability control. The 320-hp, 5.3-liter V8 provides ample power."

Predicted reliability is slightly bad, but crashworthiness is excellant.

With that kind of road clearance, you should be able to go over crap like curbs and parking lot barriers real good, and the view of street traffic that high up should be awesome.

The newest car in the driving school fleet is 5 years old. They do not have a front wheel drive Chevy or a Tahoe to tech the recruits on. They are stuck driving on a lot at sox park with light poles in the middle which is a huge safety issue.

The radios they have do not hold a charge for long.

The cars they have are falling apart.

The guys there are like the rest of us. They are told to do a good job with lousy broken down equipment.

However on a positive note the city was able to GPS all the cars causing the batterys to run down and need more jumping and calls for R-service.

Ummm guys-

The police Tahoes are pursuit equipped, meaning that the 9C1 Tahoes can be used for police pursuit work and canine duty. I know because I have seen the Tahoes on the test track at Gratten Raceway in Michigan by the Michigan State Police and they haul butt and handle extremely well for its size. Its top speed is between 130 to 135 mph, and resale value exceeds the Crown Victoria by a nice margin, the city can use the Tahoes a lot longer and lasts a lot more than a Crown Victoria, Charger or Impala. With the weight approaching 5000lbs, any shithead deciding to ram you will have a very big problem to deal with. The rollover risk is a lot lower than a Tahoe 4x4 is this: The 9C1 Tahoe is 2 inches lower than the civilian 2 wheel drive Tahoe. Hope this helps.

Look at the streets all covered in ice and no trucks out.
Don't worry, the police can still do their job and we don't have to spend the money on snow removal.

Ford stopped producing the crown vic.

Tahoes and the Crown Vic get about the same mileage.

Had one of these in 015 when they first came out. coppers s/b on central (dont remember if they were going to a call or not) t-boned and flipped by a car at Race; slid on roof about a block. Coppers OK wearing seat belts; tahoe never replaced........

I just hope these rear wheel drive things handle a little better than the stupid Astro vans did in the snow.

""However on a positive note the city was able to GPS all the cars causing the batterys to run down and need more jumping and calls for R-service.""

The sad part about this is that there is a little automatic disconnect box in the trunk behind the right wheel well carpeting that SHOULD be disabling the GPS when the battery voltage gets too low. So, brand new equipment doesn't work properly right out of the box.

Why am I not surprised????

ISN'T THERE A DEALERSHIP IN THE CITY?

WHY DOES THE CITY BUY STUFF FROM THE SUBURBS?? ARE THE TAXES TOO HIGH HERE?? INQUIRY MINDS WANT TO KNOW.

12/02/2008 04:03:00 PM

Yes, I'm sure no city dealer could be competitive because of all taxes here....Where do you suppose the city dealer was going to get his money to pay his new garbage dumpster tax???? Of course the dealers here are at a disadvantage.

SCC where does it say two wheel drive ????

As I understand it, the police package is only available in 2 wheel drive. (They are trying to keep them cheap)

Don't forget, anyone could order a police package, but why would YOU only want a 2 wheel drive SUV?

There was an article in Popular Mechanics a few years ago talking about just this....The manufacturer would put painted rims on it and get rid of the chrome on the grill, and be able to sell the car for $5000 less than they regularly would....But it was so fugly, the average consumer would not WANT to buy one

Center of gravity issue shouldn't be much of an issue with stability control. Supt. Weis, is stability control included on the Tahoes?

I'm 5'07". I've driven xx20's car twice. It is damn uncomfortable for someone shorter. Plus it's less safe to drive and uses more gas.

And there are people who claim J-Fed is looking out for the interest of the troops? What a joke. He's an incompetent psycho who can't even figure out what he should be wearing in the training videos - uniform? no, the troops don't think he's the police; suit? no, the troops think he looks like a fed; cool looking windbreaker with the CPD logo? Dork! You're the superintendent of police, for goodness sake! Dress like you're running a 17,000 employee organization, not like a house painter.

I hope they disable those stupid automatic door locks. They are going to cause someone to get hurt. When the door locks, the only way to open the door if the vehicle is in gear is to slide the lock to unlock and then pull the handle. The Crown Vics and all the old Chevys would open the door as soon as you pulled the door handle regardless if the lock was engaged or not. Lets say you are pulling up to an on view shots fired and see the guy running down a gangway, in order for the pasenger to get out to chase, the driver has to put the vehicle in park. Otherwise the passenger while holding his own gun in his right hand must slide the lock, pull the door handle and call the foot chase in on the radio. If the driver decides to put the vehicle in park, it will take a few precious seconds to get the car back into gear to try to outflank the offender before he can get to the next block.

$59M for 2000 Tahoes? $29K each.

Who is the Daley family relative cashing in on this one?

Knowing the way the city overpays, I wonder: Is that for 2000 (number of) Tahoes or 2000 (model year) Tahoes???

I don't care if they give us F150 pick up trucks. I don't chase anyone anyway. The Tahoe is easier for me to get in and out of, so naturally that is all I care about.

This will settle the chase question once and for all. No chases. period.

The Tahoe is also safer in a t-bone crash, the driver and passenger are above the direct line of impact of a car striking the Tahoe.

This will be my last contract so give me a nice roomy Tahoe, hell, make mine a Suburban.

People, get a grip. Do you not know what a tax i.d.# is? Have you never been behind someone in a store with a tax exemption number? The CITY does NOT pay tax on this purchase, wherever they make the purchase.

I don't agree with what's been done here, but the purchase was NOT made outside the city for tax purposes. I'm sure there was an underhanded purpose, but avoiding taxes ain't it.

We need a solution quick! Ford has discontinued the Crown Vic. My district hasnt seen a new patrol car in at least 9 or more months. My Crown Vic is pushing 100,000 miles in just a few more weeks as are most in the district, the seats have no more cushioning and I sit on the seat springs every night I'd almost rather sit in the back on the hard plastic and my back is killing me nightly. Not to mention my new PDT only works half the tour and im lucky if I can get I-clear to work on it. We need new vehicles NOW!!!!

Who give a shit what they give us. The "police" Tahoes are pursuit rated. they sit lower than a regular consumer one. They are 2 wheel drive for simplicity and also for speed. Pickup on the 2wd drive vs 4wd is much better. Also the traction control these days works pretty decent. (I am still all about the 4wd though, but shit a 2wd Tahoe is better than no Tahoe.) I have driven the Tahoe on a regular basis for the past 3 yrs loaded with HBT/SWAT gear, the safes and all theammo and tools. Thing handles just fine. As for getting T-boned and rolled over. Who cares. You much safer in the Tahoe. Regardless or not you going to get just as f'd up in a Crown Vic. Being above everyone, being able to just step out of the truck rather then pulling yourself up out of the car is nice. Especially with all your gear on.
I am all for the Tahoes. As far as gas milage........Shit it aint but a couple of mpgs less than that crown vic, and if you thing our Vics are finely tuned machines getting great mpgs your out your mind.

As for the pursuits............Shiat SGT's and LT's dont let them go anyways. So who cares. Even if they are for violent felons. So tired of hearing everyone bitch about teh garbage bs cars we have now and then bitch even more about the new ones we are getting. Anyone who wants a charger has obviosly not benn in one with a cage. About the size of an impala up front with the cage installed. Ask any suburban guy.

The Tahoe should be ideal for Chicago under Mayor Daley The Mad.

Blizzard? We can put snowplows on the front and salt dispensers on the back and police can clear side streets "in their travels." Streets and San is losing interest...

Maybe Daley can lease off the main streets to one company and the side streets to another. That way, we'd have "Wal-Mart Drive" and "U.S. Cellular Boulevard."

GM did NOT cancel the Tahoe or Suburban. GM canceled the massive redesign that had been planned. That would have cost them about $2 billion. So no redesign but no cancellation of the current model either.

Still, this doesn't look good for the long term production of the Tahoe. What will happen when the only people buying Tahoe's are police departments?

SCC, many coppers own and drive their own SUVs, so I don't see this as a big issue.
I do think that officers involved in multiple crashes should take hits for more than a day for wrecking the fleet.
Too many coppers are accountable for the majority of squad crashes.

The Tahoes are more comfortable and safer for the Police, not innocent bystanders when they start losing it. I welcome ANY new vehicles. The biggest problem they will encounter with Tahoes will be repair costs. Many of our newer Officers either just got a DL to come on the job, or never drove anything bigger then Mom's old Corolla she gave 'em for college.

being as these particular SUVs are specially made to be safer in pursuits than typical SUVs, it is entirely possible that the orders might be modified to accomodate soemthing the department did not previously have.

Just wait. What's coming is the Police Bling model; huge custom rims replicating the police five-point star (with Mayor Daley's face in the middle) and those high-pressure tires that change even a Hummer into a delicate, silly-ass baby carriage you can't drive over a pebble...

It will say "POLICE" in all-capitol Olde English lettering arching across the blackout tint rear window. The blue lights will be mounted under the vehicle where they look really cool...

Ought to fit right in, huh?

Durn whippersnappers! M-4s and 4wd SUVs? My pdt doesn't work, my Sgt doesn't understand me... Blah, Blah, Blah.

Dept should issue the original 4 x 4 as a patrol unit. A horse. Not a ceremonial "look at me" future dog food model, but the old famous quarter horse.

Bring back the department blacksmith, taught at Lane Tech.

Colt S/A army model .45, (Revolvers, kids, keep one chamber empty,or lose your toes)

Heavy weapons? Winchester '92s, in the ever popular 44-40 cartridge.

And I know they can't teach it,not even at the Academy, use COMMON SENSE.

'Cuz, Cous, if you don't use it, then it matters not at all what equipment you have/buy/are issued.

"Wooden ships and Iron Men" sound familiar?
