Class Acts

  • More than a dozen military families associated with the Illinois chapter of Operation Homefront will be without their spouse this holiday season but not without the essentials. And the Chicago Blackhawks are to thank..

Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel and his wife Kelly will open their west suburban home today to nearly 20 families and Blackhawk players for a holiday celebration.

Each player has committed to spending $600 on each family for food and toys and at the same time get a chance to know one another.
The charity end of the Blackhawks organization was always a class act, even when Bill Wirtz was running the show. This latest effort just reinforces that tradition.

Off topic: Merry christmas to the men and women of cpd and to all our fellow first responders who read this blog. This blog is good in alot of ways but unfortunately at times some of us use this blog to rip each other and tear each other down. During this holiday season let us all make a conscious effort to really put our energy into the stuff that is really important. The things which are truly important are how we treat our friends and family and also how we treat are extended family which is are fellow coworkers. It does not matter if you are black, white, unit or not in a unit, the city hates us all equally and us being divided only makes the city and all the other police haters out there which love to see dirt on us,more powerful. When an officer is hurt or injured,we put all the petty crap aside which divides us and we come together as a family to catch the person that has hurt us. Why do we have to wait untill a tragedy to come together and be a family? During the holiday time,it is sometimes not a joyful time for some of us. Some of us are hurting and going through a bad time personally. To my fellow coworkers,if you see someone who is going through a rough time and hurting, take the time to lend a kind word. The simple act of human kindness could be all someone needs to see the light at the end of the darkness. When someone we know passes away it is human nature to wish you would of treated someone better but let us not wait, instead let us be good to each other while that person is around because that is what truly matters. To my fellow officers, the only thing we truly have is each other so let us make the effort to just be good to each other and become a family. May everyone have a blessed and safe holiday and let us make it are number 1 mission that every officer that is in rollcall comes to check off safe and sound....officer ed poppish

Absolutely awesome. Hockey players are the classiest sports professionals out there - and hot too, even if they are sweaty and toothless! ;)

Yesterday during intermission between the Flyers/Devils, there was a segment done on Patrick Elias. I hate him when he scores against the Flyers, but I have immense respect for him as a player and for his dedication he gives to UNICEF.

Nice post, SCC.

I've always been a proud Blackhawks fan, even when they sucked for over a decade. You are correct in what you say about Dollar Bill but he never gave us fans the gift of Lord Stanley. Rocky is in the process of changing that.THANK YOU ROCK!

Sounds like a great idea, maybe to late for US to do something likewise for the Christmas Holidays
But, its a couple of thousands of us left on the CPD according to who's counting. Imagine if just 3/4 of the troops maybe kicking in $20.00, decorated FOP Hall, have a catered affair for the families of our military. For bragging rights each Area will receive a plaque to mount on their wall for the highest donation, this will make all those special units inclusive, then within those AREA, the district with the highest donation also get one for their wall. Hell, some of you guys might even have contacts out their that might donated some of the food, presents and plaques
to an affair such as this.......food for thought. WE have enough house mices around during nothing on a daliy basic, that they can provide rides for any of the folks that might not have their on wheels.

What a bunch of great guys. OK Hawks--I'm back. I'll go to some games now even if I have to sit in the shit seats. These guys deserve our support.

the hawks have definitely turned it up a notch. they play hard on both sides of the puck and will make the playoffs this year. for my money, the best place to see a game was at the old chicago stadium. the uc is nice, but the old stadium had character. with wisniewski back, watch the hawks chase the wings for first place.

Hey SCC,

Off topic, but some coppers from 008 pulled two kids out of a housefire last night on midnights. If it wasn't for them the kids wouldn't have made it. Unfortunately, two other kids were trapped in a basement bedroom and didn't survive.

Nice to see that there are some celebrities who actually support the police!! (From Comcast.net)

David Spade doesn't seem too interested in settling down, but his love affair with Arizona continues.

The who'da-thunk-it ladies man has donated $100,000 to the Phoenix Police Department to go toward the purchase of about 50 AR-15 rifles.

"These guys need to be able to do their jobs and I am just happy I could help," the Rules of Engagement star, who took action after hearing that some local cops had to pay for their guns out of their own pockets, said in a statement.

A police spokesman said that the department was very grateful for the monetary boost and that the rifles would be doled out to area patrollers.

And this isn't the first time that Spade, who grew up in nearby Scottsdale and graduated from Arizona State University, has opened his checkbook for local causes.

In August, he gave $10,000 to the Humane Society of the White Mountains in Lakeside, where his mother is a volunteer, to remodel its dog park and build a new puppy yard.

Collective "aw." No wonder the ladies like him.

Prior to that, he gave $25,000 to the family of a Phoenix cop killed in the line of duty and $10,000 to his alma mater, Saguaro High School, according to the Arizona Republic.

Hawks are a class act, my daughter was held up in a robbery at her place of business while her boyfriend waited for her at the Hawks game. They were not able to go, but the Hawks gave them seats and extra tickets for a couple of friends on another night. Seats were even better than the original. Never heard of that before. Thanks to the Hawks.
