St. Louis Police Bling

  • St. Louis' new police chief and other top officers in the department are receiving gold-filled badges worth nearly $2,000 each.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that that's about 100 times the price of a patrolman's badge. And it's more than other departments spend. For example, Kansas City Police Chief James Corwin's badge cost $48.75.

But it's a lot less than the $5,900 each the city spent on two solid-gold badges for Chief Daniel Isom's predecessor, Joe Mokwa.

We figure the aldercreatures and Shortshanks will be lined up for these items. J-Fed could buy his own.

And, what do you bet they get to keep the bling when they retire? Just a little 'going away' present.

Do they come with chrome rims? I know that in Chicago you need a suspended D.L. to have chrome rims.

"St. Louis Police Bling"

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Shortshanks, the alderwhores AND J-Fed ALL have slush funds attached to their office that require no reporting as to the distribution of their funds. I believe these jags already carry a "badge" of some sort. For all we know, they're already flashing around their 'gold bling badge' to their friends and family & laughing about their "authority" over the police. If every foolish expenditure like this by our nations' polititions were stopped, how much better off would we be today?
IT'S ALL LEGIT!

Cheaper than all those take-home cars that aren't needed...tact Lt.s...Area Lts...IAD sgts...civilian directors...etc etc etc... Actually, the uniform allowance for Masters, Daly, Brust and J-Fed (none of whom have any business wearing a police uniform) adds up to more than this. No big deal-Chicago has St. Louis beat in wasteful spending.

We kind of have that here. When the Great Terry Hillard was our fearless leader he decided to redesign the star. An open request for designs was issued and 5 of them made it to the Great Terry Hillard's desk. Terry decided he didn't like any of them and instead designed the current security guard star all non-exempts carry himself. So when Terry wasn't going on TV moments after the latest police shooting declaring the officers were in the wrong, he was at home designing bling for us all. However the exempt stars must have been bling enough or maybe he ran out of time.

Now that again SCC brings things to light! Why do all the aldergoofs carry a badge? Why does the city clerk and treasure have a badge? Even more why does the city clerks investigators who make tons of easy money have badges and only write parking tickets+ Monthly expense accounts? Cuts here? Guess not!

Ahhhhhhhh.......cops and badges. I remember when there was a proposal to switch badges from stars to shields ala LAPD and there was a damn near mutiny from the rank and file. Then Terry and Co. decided they needed to "replace" our 1955-era stars with the shitty, poorly produced items we now carry. Most already have numbers missing, have plating fading or are bent from flimsy design.

Someone got $$$ from both the replacement of our old stars and the "buy back" of your star/hat shield sunk in Lucite. Hey Jody...check the money trail and see who made bank on that transaction.

Most cops would gladly pay out of their own pocket for a quality product. And don't for a minute think that the St Louis police are idiots. When Albert Seedman was Chief of Detectives with the NYPD he had a 24K shield struck with dept approval which he flashed at every opportunity.

I don't know who got the kickback from purchasing all the replacement badges for CPD, but they are really poor craftsmanship as I have seen the enamel paint has fallen off several that I've seen. Maybe it was a minority contract like everything else in the city, such as your new district stations that are already falling apart and they are new or fairly new. How much did someone get for those contracts?????

I spoke to a now retired PO who stated that the company that made them had been subject to an investigation due to selling our badges without permission. Some guy was arrested, but they and the dealer were never punished, in fact thay got the new contract without any real competition .
Some said that Sen Kennedy was involved

When the old "pie plates" were replaced by the new stars (you know, the ones that just got replaced), bids were let out and the winner was a firm in NY state that underbid a manufacturer that was right here in the city (C. H. Hanson)by 25 cents a badge. So the contract went to NY, not Chicago. Eventually, the NY firm went belly-up and the CPD dies were sold to some outfit in Wisconsin (City purchasing wasn't smart enough to make sure the city retained ownership of the dies). The Wisconsin outfit used them to make belt buckles which were a precise replica of the CPD button (you needed to paint them silver). When CPD needed more badges, they weren't available. If you run across any old badges, you will see the originals were stamped from sheet metal; after the dies were gone, the later ones were cast from a mold at considerable expense. And over the years any number were lost or stolen. In summary, too many in the wrong hands and no way to get new ones except to keep casting them.

The old ones did stand up to the wear-and-tear of every day use. And a lot of local platers, jewelers, and even gunsmiths (remember local gunsmiths?) would even nickle-plate them for you for erf--oops, can I say that here?

Just some ramblings from an old-timer.

everyone should know, the company that produced the badge that are poor quality and falling apart is:
V.H. Blackinton Company from Mass.
