The last three reported homicides in NYC occurred in Brooklyn last night. They were unrelated fatal shooting of men (a cab driver and 2 "dump jobs").
Pcts. 60 (Coney Island), 72 (Sunset Park) and the last one in the 69 (Canarsie).
Unconfirmed figures put 2008 NYPD homicide totals in excess of 520 with the 73rd Pct. (Brownsville) as worst.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The number of homicides in New York City rose about four percent in 2008 compared with the previous year, preliminary figures from the city's police department showed.
There were 516 homicides in New York City in 2008, according to preliminary police figures.
The NYPD's CompStat data showed 516 homicides in the city last year, up from 496 in 2007.
That's still a dramatic change from 1990, when 2,262 homicides earned New York the title of "murder capital" of the nation.
Though the figures are subject to change, the 2008 tally also represents a drop from the 596 homicides investigated in New York in 2006.
The NYPD, which began compiling the report in 1963, cited its Operation Impact as a chief reason for the improvement in recent years.
The operation places more uniformed officers in concentrated areas where crime rates are high, the NYPD said.

As of Wednesday morning, the 6th Precinct In New York City (as well as two others) was just 1 day away from ending the year 2008 murder free! In fact, a person is far more likely to be shot with a camera than with a gun.
Although this is not unheard of it is not the norm, and it bucks the 4.8 percent citywide rise in homicides: as of Sunday, there were 513 homicides in NY City.
“It’s just basic, old-fashioned policing,” Inspector Caroli said. “You put a cop on a foot post, and he gets to know the neighborhood and the neighborhood gets to know him. It’s going to be a deterrent.”
Did we get a tentative final body count for 2008 yet? Inquiring minds want to know if the "dont worry, Jodi will fix it" came true.

Suit: FOP Pays Legal Fees For Burge, But Not For Blacks
A current and a former Chicago Police officer claim their union discriminates on the basis of race when it comes to paying the legal fees of members facing disciplinary action or criminal charges.
The two point to the Fraternal Order of Police footing the legal bill for former Cmdr. Jon Burge as proof of the FOP's racial bias. Burge was arrested in October and charged with obstruction of justice and perjury in relation to a civil suit regarding torture allegations against him. He is alleged to have tortured criminal suspects between 1972 and 1991 to force confessions. His trial is set for May 2009.
In a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday, Raysurnet Morris and William Whitaker, both black, contend their being denied but Burge granted payment of legal fees is racially discriminatory.
Morris was terminated from the CPD this year for alleged wrongful conduct, the suit says. The suit did not go into detail as to what that wrongful conduct was. Prior to her termination, Morris asked the FOP to pay her legal fees associated with her case. The FOP refused, the suit says, "holding that her alleged wrongful conduct was not within the scope of her employment."
She was terminated from the department in October, and in November made a second request to the FOP to pay her legal fees and was denied again, the suit claims.
Whitaker, the suit says, was acquitted of criminal charges in February 2007. He sought help from the FOP to pay his legal fees relating not to the arrest but the departmental hearing regarding whether he would be terminated. That hearing has yet to convene, but the FOP has refused to pay Whitaker's legal fees, the suit says.
The suit claims the payment by the FOP of legal fees for Burge, who is white, but not for non-white members such as Morris and Whitaker, violates the Equal Protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Whitaker and Morris seek an order for the FOP to stop payments of Burge's legal fees, and/or an order that legal fees be paid for all FOP members regardless of race. They also seek compensatory damages of $150,000 and punitive damages of $450,000.

There was rumblings of something like this at the last FOP General Meeting, two officers were very peeved that the FOP would pay for Burge's legal fees for lying to the Feds, even though Burge had been an FOP member for a long time and still pays dues the offense he was indicted for clearly was outside the scope of his employment and happened many years into his retirement.
It is way beyond my understanding why the FOP chose to go this route. If they pay for Burge then why not every officer who gets in a jam off duty, every DUI, domestic beef etc.
Donahue had no good answer when asked directly by two officers who spoke up during the meeting. They both said "you have not heard the last of this."
Apparently not.
All Donahue said was the FOP Board considered the case and decided to pay because Burge was a log time FOP member. Not good enough in my opinion but I don't make those decisions. I thought only things on duty in the course of one's employment were compensable by FOP for legal fees etc. Your union dues will now be spent to defend this case.

While I agree that the sites should be run and maintained by the employees there but cmon... The guy had to show officers how to pump their own gas???? And another had cut themself while going under the hood to check their own oil????99% of gas stations for the citizenry are self service. How do these officers function in their personal lives???
I would sure hate to see the condition of their own personal cars. As a condition of employment, every one of these officers have driver's licenses and I would assume that the majority own their own cars. If they are competent enough to have a driver's license and own a vehicle, one can only assume that they should know the basics of fueling and checking their own oil.

The number of homicides according to CLEAR for "0110 UCR" is 590...that's for all of 2008 from 01 January,2008 - 30 December,2008 as far as I can get stats to run for...31 of December was not comming up....so as far as we are concerned....590+ homicides for 2008...is what we have credit for thus far...look it up yourselves....go to CLEAR and look up for yourself...
Actually, the 1st official homicide for 2009 was at 5100 W. Potomac, beat 2533.
