Cozzi Pleads Out
The timing of that "Reasonable" video and the "we've got your back" statements look curiouser and curiouser:
A Chicago Police officer pleaded guilty today to a civil rights violation for beating a 60-year-old man who was handcuffed and shackled to a wheelchair.
“I lost it,” Officer William Cozzi admitted in federal court.
The government is seeking a sentence of six to eight years for the 51-year-old officer.
Cozzi previously was convicted on a state charge of misdemeanor battery and sentenced to 18 months’ probation.
The reality of the situation is that to fight something like this all the way through the federal courts is going to bankrupt anyone not making a few hundred thousand a year. We aren't sure of the reasoning behind it all, but that's between Cozzi and his lawyers.

Bill Cozzi is a good man who certainly doesn't deserve what has been brought upon him. I hope Jody realizes that his entire time here will be marked by what he did to a guy who plead guilty and took his punishment only to have it thrown back at him.
It made me sick to have to listen to Dan Dugan have to tow the Jody line while they beg us to stretch our necks for them. It was even better when they tried to drag Pat McNulty into it. What was he too busy to appear in person? At least he didn't sell his soul. Too bad about Dan, I'm sure he's got plans and needs to stay near the top.
I had the honor to works with Cozy several times. He is hard worker and very honest. His many years of military service gav him post traumatic stress. I hope the court system takes it easy on him and gives him the help he needs. Yes we can give Cozi a break.

The problem is that this department has no organization among the blue shirts.
We actually need to stop doing any work that we were not called to do. There will be no ppo's in 2009, so there will be no new blood that wants to go out and work.
No tickets, no arrests; in fact, hit the medical a few times this year and use that as an opportunity to get a check up and stay home for a few days.
We have a real opportunity in 2009 to send a clear message to the department and the media. "We don't trust you and you'll get nothing from us"!

Why did I ever become the police
I gave Weis the benefit of the doubt when he arrived in Chicago. I had high hopes. I attended the Superintendant's forum at the academy when he had his question answer session. I was there when he admitted that he sent the Video to Robert Grant for further review. This case would never have been reviewed had it not been for Weis. This is NOT a good case for a Federal Civil Rights violation. As far as I'm concerned, there is absolutely nothing Weis could do that would garner any form of support or respect from me after this. I don't care about rifles, work schedules, or anything else. This offense committed by Cozzi does not warrant 6 to 8 years in prison.

What can be done for him now? I agree with the post about a fundraiser for the family. In situations like this, would it help to have a massive letter campaign supporting his character, years of service and requesting leniency? I'm an ordinary citizen, I think many civilians like myself should do this. Anyone have info where to send letters,how to do this, is there a chance it could help ease his sentence? It's a mockery of justice, the man already served his punishment for this one sided media circus. I hope all the bastards who did this to him burn in hell. If your really wondering who is doing all the work for this department in light of the Cozzi backstabbing, I've got one word for you, MANAGEMENT. People on days who don't have enough time for the bid who want to keep their spots and can't do their time on nights like the rest of us.People in units who'll get launched for inactivity and people on tac and gangs for the same reasons. Its actually an ingenious secondary benefit for the city during times like these. Whether or not they realized it when the management system became part of the contract I don't know. News on the Street.....
Last night in the 011 District there was a 10-1 called after the game at Marshal High School. 10 District responded, numerous plain cloths units, MSF was called in, SWAT. The N.Lawnadale coach went at it with the opposing coach and all hell broke lose.
When the first units arrived they went and broke up the fight between the coaches and the N.Lawndale coach was hooten & hollering. Next thing that happened is this skinny N.Lawndale coach arrives in the 011 District wearing his cheesy brown suit and identifies himself as a Detective for I.A.D.
This piece of sh*t then called the commander of I.A.D to get involved and to get the white officer who broke up the fight in trouble because he "pushed" him.
So you have this piece of sh*t IAD Detective who is the head coach for the N.Lawndale team start this fight with the opposing head coach...the players followed...could of gotten other responding officer's hurt responding to a 10-1....could of gotten other officer's hurt in the gym breaking up fights...could of gotten the students injured and the great citizens of the W.side...and this piece of sh*t who started all of this has the NERVE to go to the 011 District and get some officer's jammed up for doing their job???????
At this point...let him! Then when the security tapes get pulled you will see who the true "animal" is THIS TIME...NOT one of the outstanding citizens/students of the W.side, NOT the players......... THE HEAD COACH / DETECTIVE OF I.A.D!!

We now have the Mayor of the 3rd largest city in the most powerful nation in the world calling his governor coo-coo(twice). No more fans (animals) allowed to watch their animals play basketball. Officer Cozzi arrested me for DUI. It was my first and only offense and my only time arrested. He treated me professionally, respectfully, and kind of looked out for me. Mind you he wasn;t my best friend through this, but he said a few things that I still remmeber today, that I can say changed me forever. Not mean, just true.
I felt bad when I read about his trouble. The guy I saw in the video was not the Officer I dealt with. I found this blogsite on googling his name. I think his punishment far outweighs what he did.
I am going to contact Gillespie his attorney. What better witness of a Police Officer's character than someone he arrested, treated right, and maybe saved my life. I got off pretty light compared to him and what I did was alot worse. Yes I am sober now too. I feel terrible for him.
At Mt Sinai a man who was off his meds was getting out of control so the security guard looks at my partner and I to do something. I stated unless you are signing complaints to have him arrested I will not be laying hands on him in fear of a civil rights lawsuit. He looked at me like I had 3 heads, but finally called more security and got him under control. Sorry fellas but if that's the way the city and J-Fed are going to treat us than be ready to deal with thousands of other cops that feel the same way. Proud to do NOTHING for 9 more year and get paid doing it! All the bosses asking for event numbers and activity you got to be crazy to think WE as blue shirts are going to stick our necks out for you. Go to the command staff meeting, get chewed out, than come back to the district and yell at us. I still wont do a thing for you or this city. Shove your primary and secondary missions up your a$$.

Ofc. Cozzi made a mistake that day, that much has been established. He was charged and convicted in court under Illinois Revised Statutes. He served his sentence of probation. He also served two years suspension from the police department per police board decision.
Supt. Weis took it upon himself, back when he waas SAIC Weis of the FBI, assigned to Philadelphia PA no less, to deliver information concerning this case to the Chicago FBI office for investigation of possible civil rights violations.
In this one act SAIC Weis, later Supt. Weis showed the membership of the Chicago Police Department that we have much to fear from this guy. If a mistake is made, poor judgement or intentional wrongdoing, no mater, we now know we face prosecution in State Court as well as in Federal Court in addition to Chicago Police Department sanctions which may include suspension or termination of employment.
Is it any wonder then that officers are doubly and triply cautious in their actions? No more aggressive police work in this city. The word here is now ultra cautious police work and watch out for your own well being first and foremost. That message has been delivered and heard by all loud and clear.
I will never again make any decision which might even remotely result in any jeopardy to my freedom, liberty or employment. I want a supervisor present at all times to interpret the General Orders and Illinois State Law and City Ordinances for me and to guide me and order me to do what is correct.
I will now and forever more stand by until sufficient backup and supervision is on the scene before I do anything other than write a parking or traffic ticket. I will cover my own ass like never before and I strongly urge all police officers to be similarly cautious. The pension and that paycheck twice a month are too precious to risk losing for the sake of taking some low IQ high school dropout to jail.
I will write more reports and defer to supervisors for decisions and to investigative units for follow up. I will respond to assignments armed with pen and paper and radio and an overabundance of caution. The end of career is too close to risk having a Cozzi type response done to me by the Superintendent. This I deem is reasonable and proper in light of current circumstances.
All Officers please take heed and take proper conservative action to safeguard your livelihood.

I saw the tape and saw a cop smacking a drunk a few times. Big deal. Was he jamming his feet on the floor to stop the chair abruptly when PO's were trying to move him?
I honestly feel sorry for those now on the CPD.
In my opinion, even the State court was too much. They should have put the guy in rehab for being a drunk.
I read a lot of pissing and moaning, but no one is leaving this job. I respect the department I work for and am proud to be a police officer for this city, and always will. We can't control what happens at the top until we organize and take steps to make changes, our union doesn't have the balls.
Homicide offenders in Crook County get less time than this. Shame on you Weis, and shame on all you coppers that are still writing tickets.
