Humorous Burris Takedown

  • Burris is the prototypical time-serving career politician who owes his success to being simultaneously ambitious and bland. He has never been one to challenge the status quo, but no one underestimates his self-esteem. The two Burris children, after all, are named Roland and Rolanda.
  • But logic has never been his strong suit. A longtime advocate of a national handgun ban, Burris organized Chicago's first Gun Turn-in Day in 1993. But when he ran for governor the following year, he admitted that he owned a handgun ("for protection,") and did not hand it over to police as he urged others to do.
Such a typically liberal Chicago Machine hack. Think of this appointment as some sort of political payoff. We heard that if he serves even one day in the Senate, he gets a full Senate pension to go along with his other one (or ones).

"Burris is the prototypical time-serving career politician who owes his success to being simultaneously ambitious and bland. He has never been one to challenge the status quo, but no one underestimates his self-esteem."

Saw him today on TV, over 70 yet still transporting himself inexorably forward with those frail little footsteps -- forward, as he sees it, to what is merely his birthright. Yet another tastefully-appointed office with his nameplate already on the desk, another tufted genuine leather swivel chair, another government check...perhaps a box of fine cigars?

He was using "the imperial 'we'," quietly insisting "We are the Senator."

Remember Paul Powell, Secretary of State? Boy, did he have a great official photo of himself on the back of _Rules Of The Road_. Benign smile, head slightly inclined to one side, hands clasped -- the very image of "Can I be of assistance?"

The real kicker was the gold-framed portrait on his desk -- a picture of his gray-haired mother, carefully turned to face the camera.

How many millions in cash did they find in those shoe boxes in the closet after Powell suddenly died?

Similarly, there's something about the way Burris moves and talks that makes my skin crawl.

NPR interviewed Burris on Wednesday. The questions were soft, but nonetheless Burris quickly ended the interview. If he can't endure an NPR interview, how will he navigate the intensive scrutiny he is about to face? Play the race card over and over again?

I'm so disappointed that Illinois politics have withered into dynastic family entitlements and racial profile appointments. Who says Illinois "needs" a black senator? Why can't we have the "best candidate", even if selected by a tainted governor? I was disenchanted by Jan Schakowsky (tainted by her husband's non-profit scam conviction - how did she survive that?) and the usual suspects of Guttierez, Jackson, Davis, et al. Poor leadership leads to poor governance leads to widespread political cooperation. Oops, yes, we're in Illinois!

What does he need all the pensions for he already has a big mausoleum and an inscribed tombstone ready for his demise. I have not heard of any working people, public or private getting a raise lately yet they keep raising all the fees and taxs there are and make up moreto take all our money.

Without any other time served (heh) in the federal government, a Senator's pension fully vests in five years. I don't know the schedule, so he'll get something, but not a full pension.

I was wondering about that too...

And, from Capitol WQuestions, the real truth:

"When are Members of Congress considered vested and eligible to receive a pension? And how much is that pension?" Monticello, Arkansas - 9/28/00
"Members who have participated in the congressional pension system are vested after 5 years of service. A full pension is available to Members 62 years of age with 5 years of service; 50 years or older with 20 years of service; or 25 years of service at any age. A reduced pension is available depending upon which of several different age/service options is chosen. If Members leave Congress before reaching retirement age, they may leave their contributions behind and receive a deferred pension later..."
Since January 1, 1984, all Members of Congress also participate in the Social Security system and are required to pay Social Security taxes.

Really? Blago can't, as a last official act do the right thing and appoint someone less political? How about less political? Burris is one of the original old Daley machine suck holes. Will it ever change?

What will it take for the people to get these thieves out of our pockets? Vote every one of these self important crooks out of office. VOTE OUT EVERYONE.

When this Nation was young we sent citizens to Washington to represent us. Now, being a politician is a career. In fact, it is a family business.

This is the reason the politicians are out of touch, they were never 'normal' people. We need to send some real people who understand what it means to be a regular citizen, not one of the annointed ones.

I admit I voted for Blo Jo the first time he ran. Second time I voted for Topinka who was always pro police. She even questioned as to why there are no signs around Springfield giving directions to the Police Memorial and was going to correct it if she got into office. Well, that never happened and it probably never will. Hopefully, in 2009 we won't have to add any names from Illinois to the State Memorial.

Is it true that Illinois is being kicked out of the U.S.? As I hear it, the dems are so pissed by the embarrassment Illinois has caused the party, that once expelled, the U.S. will set up a Cuba like blockade. This blockade is to keep Illinois dems from tainting the rest of the party.

Well spoken. Stroger. Rush. And look at Kennedy, who has never held office, looking to run in NY for Hillary's seat. Because it's "in her blood." And that is a quote that I heard in the news when she began to discuss it recently.

Dude, get ahold of yourself! A recent poll was sited here on SCC that placed Illinois at, I believe, 17th in the country for the level of corruption (though maybe now, with a bullet!). It had a fomula that included how many polititions had been convicted and jailed etc.

Notably considered more corrupt than Illinois were Minnesota, (who is still wrestling over who their Senator will be), New Jersey, Alaska, Louisiana, Florida etc. Politics has always been a cesspool in this country, but to think that Illinois is the worst in the country, is sort of like thinking that the Chicago Bears/Bulls/Cubs/Hawks/Sox will win championships this year!

Your comment is not so far fetched.

Although, I suspect it will be a State splitting off from the U.S.A rather then one being kicked out of it.

That State will probably be Texas as it has a unique, I don't know what you call it, state charter or something like that, giving Texas the ability go it's own way if it so chooses.

Some people believe the USA will splinter in to factions with a Mexico, Asian, Canadian and Euro affiliation. You can guess what segments of the country will go which direction.

I came back to my birth city of Chicago in 1997 from Pennsylvania after being away for 6 years. I came back with a Sig Sauer 9mm and Colt 45. I'm glad I have them the way things are going. I had a permit to carry in PA and I had to be interviewed with the Sheriff of Lancaster County to be issued one. Never pulled it out of it's holster but while doing business in some places filled with bad people, typically with high illegal immigrants, it kept me from harm just being under my belt.

Liberals like Burris that have guns and take them from everybody else are pond scum.

Respectfully,
Buck Naked

Time to launch ALL these Clown Politicians, ANYONE who is even remotely connected to the CROOK County/SHIT-cago/State of SMELLIN-ois deadbeat, bloodsucker politicians we have in office now. I can't think of even one who is honest, ethical, intelligent enough to be fiscally responsible to the taxpayers, able to do ANYTHING to produce revenue for the State, County, or City, other than to just tax the citizens to death, etc; etc; etc. Get rid of ALL of them, and their spawn, A.S.A.P.....

FYI - I looked it up on the Senate website. Can only get a pension after 5 years of service. I'm not sure of his biography so I'm not sure if he has ever worked for the feds.... If he has, that service counts (not military) towards his 5 years.

For starters, stop voting for candidates who are white, ethnic and Democratic! Break the cycle, by electing new, fresh blood candidates from newer parties. Enact term limits too.

Saw Roland on TV tonight at some black church with the fat ladies in their choir robes swaying and clapping behind him and Bobby Rush trying to articulate a few words. Danny Davis was there in some kind of militant-looking T-shirt, along with all sorts of other unknown people who just stand there with folded arms, wearing a fez and looking threatening. The usual crowd.

Spread the fingers of both hands as far apart as you can -- like you were trying to glom onto a basketball. Now hold your hands in front of you at chest height and tap the fingertips rapidly together.

This is about the most childish expression of pleasure and excitement that you could imagine -- and that's what Burris was doing in front of the camera tonight. He's visibly beside himself with glee at the idea that "We are the Senator," as he puts it.

He is going to have someone pack him a bag of custom-made shirts and drive him to the airport, and he is actually going to go to Washington to see if they'll swear him in.

Why not? Might be a check in it for him...

Hasn't that US Senate seat been vacant since 1993, when Carol Mosley-Braun won in the "Year of the Woman" 1992 elections? :)

Looking back at that Senate seat:

US Senator Al "The Pal" Dixon is defeated in the Democratic Primary by Carol. Referring to Dixon's "vote" on Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill, Mosley-Braun said men don't understand sexual harrassment.

During her six year reign, Mosley-Braun met with a Nigerian dictator, had money scandals (including her own mom!), made a big stink about Strom Thurmond's Confederate Flag, did nothing about her boyfriend/office manager Kgosi Matthews harassing women in her office (I guess some women don't understand sexual harrassment) and smiled a lot. After losing her seat to Peter Fitzgerald in 1998, Mosley-Braun tried to become "Madam President in 2002.

Peter Fitzgerald serves a quiet term as US Senator. :)

In 2004 Obama wins the Democratic Primary and of course the general election. Out a six year term, Obama served one year: 2005-2006. Obama spent 2006 hawking his audacity books (the nerve!). Obama spent 2007 and 2008 running for president.

You made a very salient point that I'd like to expand on, that our politicians and family members are no longer "normal" people.

It's all about who you know that matters. Those who have clout rarely want to associate with those who don't. Even on the job they set up a access perimeter that few can permeate.

My one boss used to comment that someone was "good people," by that he meant connected. I'd have to assume that those of us he shunned with no connections were in fact "bad people."

The insiders control the appointments at all levels. They decide who gets promoted, appointed and anointed. Unions operate with impunity as well and are decreasingly sensitive to the needs of their members.

Roland Burris Goes To Washington!

It'd make a great children's book. There he was today -- with some lackey behind him wheeling Burris's briefcase along on a little cart -- insisting that he was the junior Senator from Illinois.

God, it's like something out of Reconstruction.

What a spectacle today -- Roland Burris out in the rain, pushing forward, forward through the Capitol crowd, insisting that "we are the Senator," and being shunted off to the visitor's entrance at the side...

Just like a kid who sticks his finger in every pay phone he passes, pulls the knob on every vending machine he walks by. Maybe something will come out for him.

It all eventually comes down to human nature.

For every good quality of human nature, there is it's opposite.

It's up to each individual to, throughout their life, decide which they will choose to place a higher value on.

Just like in the old cartoons, (Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, etc), their's the 'angel' on one shoulder and the 'little devil' on the other, both trying to get your attention.

Just as love is sacrifice, life is an ongoing testing of which influence you will find to be the most attractive.

And at the end of corporeal life?

Well, we'll all know, one way or another.

The fix is in.

Roland Burris' long-time pal Jesse White is now saying that the lack of his signature as Secretary of State doesn't necessarily preclude Burris being seated by the Senate.

The whole Democratic Senate is furiously backpedaling, too, while the media have decided that this is a "racial" wrong of some kind that needs to be righted by Burris' swearing-in.

Astonishingly, the Congressional Black Caucus also collectively feels that Burris is just the fellow for the job.

People don't realize that Washington, D.C. isn't the Capitol anymore -- Chicago's City Hall calls the shots now.

Barack Obama -- Mayor Daley's tame President.

Roland Burris -- Mayor Daley's tame Senator.

Etc.
