Paying for Snow Removal

Um, how about a little of that "creative financing" Daley is so hell bent on?
  • One day after reversing snow removal cutbacks that turned Chicago side streets into skating rinks, Mayor Daley refused to say how he would pay for the increased overtime.

But, the mayor hinted strongly Wednesday that he wants Teamsters Union Local 726 to follow the Laborer's Union's lead. Laborer's Local 1001 has agreed to a four-day-a-week, ten-hour workday to reduce overtime and help the city fill more potholes.

Yesterday, Daley was all willing to circumvent State and Federal law regarding grants and matching funds to get a piece of the pie Obama is setting up after the inauguration. Today he can't reveal how cutbacks are going to become dollars for plowing? Has he completely lost his mind?

Has anyone ever gave thought to police joining the teamsters?
Would it hurt or help?
I know that the "union" we have now has absolutely no leverage, it just makes a little sense to put it to a vote in order to help us in our constant contract problems.
I worked in the teamsters prior to becoming the police, the dues werent outrageous and we had better choices in health care.

So why not another fee for Snow Control. Next there will be a fee for Air Quality Control, and Sunrise and Sunset Maintenance.

Amazingly, in the municipality where I live, the snow gets plowed every time it snows and it gets salted where neded, and the garbage gets picked up.

Yet none of the vehicles involved is owned by a government entity, and none of the people driving the vehicles works for a government entity.

maybe Chicago could find a partial answer in such an arrangement.

What a crook, and now he is president:

President-elect Barack Obama took big money from a man at the center of a federal probe that has forced one of Obama's top Cabinet picks to withdraw.

Financial records show the Obama campaign got more than $30,000 from California financier David Rubin, the target of an investigation into donations and possible "pay-to-play" deals involving New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, Obama's pick for commerce secretary.

By the time the city comes through its clean. 20 bucks a year to ensure a safe passge? hardly an inconvenience. Try it..Its just a suggestion. Mayor Daley said today he helped move one of Chicago’s oldest homeless shelters from a “decrepit” facility in Greektown to a state-of-the-art building in Lawndale to help the shelter — not longtime mayoral pal Michael Marchese.

Although the deal cost Chicago taxpayers at least $13.5 million and paved the way for Marchese to build 212 luxury condominiums, Daley insisted there was “NO FAVORITISM WHATSOEVER.”

PAYROLL DEDUCTION ERROR 01/08/09

Many members may have noticed that the Health Insurance Deduction was listed in the After Tax Deductions portion instead of the Before Tax Deduction portion of their most recent pay check. While this deduction was printed in the incorrect area, the actual calculations were performed with the Health Insurance Deduction as a Before Tax amount. Finance is aware of the problem and has assured the Lodge that the problem will be corrected.

I have to say, I'm already pissed off. It took just one snowfall for me to see the ridiculous saltpiles of previous years.

What a friggin' waste. I wish this blog among many others could've complained in a measured way. What was needed was a little more effort, not the boondoggle of 1980-2007.

Instead, you've justified the ridiculous Chicago snow-removal fetish (and resultant enormous waste of money) for all time. We'll never get out from under this.

"Has he completely lost his mind?"

Hardly.

daley adheres to the following rules:

1) If telling the truth HELPS you, tell the truth. (however rarely this is true for an incumbent)

2) If telling the truth HURTS you, tell a lie, particularly a lie that you are confident is impossible to prove is a lie.

3) When lying, coat your lies with as much truth as possible, so the lie APPEARS to be true.

4) Remember that history has proven that there is no such thing as too big a lie; in fact, the bigger and bolder the lie, the less likely it is that the lie will be challenged by anyone but the most honest, and then, you can apply the next rule of thumb.

5) When confronted with your lies, vigorously assert that you're NOT lying and accuse those who say you are, of LYING.

6) avoid lying about things that can be PROVEN to be lies, tho, you can ALWAYS challenge the honesty of those who present the proof of your lies.

7) Do your very best to keep track of your lies, so you don't waste energy lying when you are confronted with conflicting lies.

8) Whenever possible, always have OTHERS lie for you, so you can denounce them, if and when they are caught lying.

9) When caught in a lie, change the subject and focus on telling those lies that have, so far, not been proven to be lies.

10) Tell the truth sparingly, as, if the truth were helpful to you, you wouldn't have to tell so many lies in the first place.

11) When in doubt, say nothing, even if you have to speak many words which, essentially, mean nothing.

12) Save your best lies for the days leading up to an election, as, after you are reelected, you can, for a period of time, get away with telling your less plausible lies.

13) When submitting to questions from the media, try to mostly permit those media creatures you know are bought and paid for whores to ask the questions.

14) Never submit yourself to being questioned by anyone in the media who you know to be honest. Ever.

daley knows that the only potential vulnerability any elected politician ever faces is on election day. And that, once elected/reelected, the opinions of the electorate are essentially meaningless, at least until about a year or less before the next election.

Unlike his father, who was once quoted as saying 'Good government is good politics', little richard finds it to his liking to dwell solely on giving the false impression of 'good governing', rather than try to actually govern well.

It's been working, for him, for years now, so why would he think there's a need to change strategies?

how about our retro and salary increase(s)!
It cost 2.5X to buy roof over our head (house, etc.) and to live in a decent neighborhood in Chicago!

As compared to 2004, the year when I bought my last house for $140,000at that time the neighborhood was decent, now, after the housing bubble, it cost me 2.5X more to relocate into another decent neighborhood
Da Mayor is accountable for the cost difference so lets stick to our guns and demand what is due to us!

Hell, everyone else does the same..Republic Windows... the Union stood by their employees who got their retro check

now its time for many other reasons for us to unite and demand that we get whats owe to us!

OT but someone asked about losing one's city pension if convicted of a felony. But if you're a senator...
Posted on Wednesday, 10.29.08 Recommend
Crime and punishment for Ted Stevens, et al
OUR OPINION: Conviction should be grounds to kick a senator out of office
America doesn't have royalty, but being a U.S. senator and getting a boatload of perks comes pretty close. The Senate's 100 millionaires have excellent healthcare and retirement plans, exclusive gyms, franking privileges, guaranteed pay, a doctor on call, free parking in the Capitol and airport freebies that most people can only dream about, just to name a few.

The perks don't include failing to disclose $250,000 in gifts from friends, which is what Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has been convicted of doing. For his transgression, which is a felony, Sen. Stevens should be sent to jail -- just like any other criminal. Yet even as a convicted felon, Sen. Stevens still is entitled to his perks, including a generous pension that can be collected from a prison cell. Even still, there is one perk that should be taken from Sen. Stevens and any other senator convicted of a crime -- the right to continue serving in the U.S. Senate and to have a hand in crafting America's laws.

A crooked senator

A senator can be expelled from office by a two-thirds vote of his Senate colleagues, but a convicted senator does not automatically lose his seat. That's just plain wrong. In the wake of Sen. Stevens' conviction, this is one thing that even a rabidly partisan Congress should be able to agree on: No crooks allowed. If you do the crime, you should lose the privilege of making laws for the rest of us.

12:35, yes, it has come up b4. In the late 80's, the teamsters did try to get in and were voted down by the membership of FOP. another union, which I can't recall, also was in the running, as i recall FOP won by a large margin.

Muncipal worker unions will face the same issues that auto workers union will face shortly - their employers can no longer afford the pay packages and benefits and pensions. Chicago police and fire union wages still out strip the great majority of wages paid to Chicago residents, outstripping even many white-collar professionals with graduate degrees and 60-hour work weeks with no job security. The work world has changed dramatically in the last two decades, and the next changes will occur in the governmental sector because the muncipal, state, and federal budgets can no longer absorb the annual budget increases for pension and insurance costs while revenue declines and taxpayers begin to revolt. As far as Chicago goes, every abandoned building is a loss in tax revenue, every foreclosure is at least a delay in tax revenue. Look at Detroit; much of its tax base is gone, period. Large areas of Chicago's south and west-side face the same tax base destruction.

Real wages have declined over the past two decades for all but the top 5% of wage-earners.

The Teamsters held informational meetings trying to organize the Police in 74 or 75. The Reps. they sent, mind you they were trying to organize the POLICE, looked, talked and acted (from the "do's", unbuttoned silk shirts, diamond pinky rings-yyou name it, looked and talked like the were straight out of the Sopranos!!

I believe the organization the original poster was refering to (after the teamsters) was known as the "Paper workers" union. (can't think of their actual name!!)

Say what you will about the FOP but the "old timers" will tell you things in the dept. were one hell of a lot worse before FOP took over, especially with BS disipline, telephone transfers-NOT REQUESTED, you just happened to piss off a boss or some other silly bullshit. Day's off for the most minor infracions,SUDDEN D.O.G. group changes, especially if your weekends were coming up UNLESS you were one of the suck asses on and on.NOBODY TO COMPLAIN TO OR TAKE YOUR SIDE!! Be thankfull

Signed SOMEONE WHO WAS THERE AND REMEMBERS

Wimpy is Popeye's friend. In the cartoons he mainly plays the role of the "straight man" to Popeye's outbursts and wild antics. Wimpy is very intelligent, and well educated, but very lazy and gluttonous. Wimpy is also something of a scam artist and (especially in the newspaper cartoons) can be shockingly underhanded at times.

Wimpy loves to eat hamburgers, and is usually seen with one (e.g. in "Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor," where he eats burgers almost the entire time) but is usually too cheap to pay for them. A recurring joke is

Wimpy's attempts to con other patrons of the diner into buying him his lunch. Wimpy often tries to outwit fellow patrons with his convoluted logic. His famous line, which was first introduced to the cartoons in the 1934 cartoon We Aim to Please, is "I'd gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today". (from Wikipedia)

I was watching a program on one of the cable access channels about how the mayor is ripping us off with the TIFF tax program. He has it set up where he can actually change the rules with the TIFFs. Millenium Park can get the Tiff benefits while being across the street from the actual TIFF. Just one example of the abuse.

During the program, the people from IVI who presented it, pointed out that the park district has a plan to complete the development of the last 25 miles of Lake Shore Drive. A half billion dollars from the sale of Midway is going to that project. That is really going to help the vast majority of citizens isn't it!!!!!! And still no raise...........
