Apologies All Around

Via Sgt. John Northen (ret):
  • "Through my experience, I have tremendous respect for the Chicago Police Department and my brothers and sisters in law enforcement. I regret that Parade newspaper magazine chose to take my statement out of context. As a result, I offer my regrets to the men and women of our profession. God bless the CPD. - Jim Previtera"
And a vague apology from Parade Magazine:
  • We're sorry you were displeased with the remarks attributed to Col. James Previtera. It was not PARADE's intent to disparage the bravery and courage of our nation's police officers. The quotation was meant to point out that it takes a special kind of law-enforcement officer to serve on the presidential-protection detail, one who is willing to throw himself in front of a bullet for the sake of the nation, without a moment's thought to his own safety. Rest assured that PARADE intended no slight to anyone in law enforcement. Indeed, PARADE has been honoring the nation's top law-enforcement officers since 1966 through our "Police Officer of the Year" awards. We appreciate the work police officers everywhere do to keep us safe.

Thank you again for writing. We appreciate hearing from you.

    Lamar Graham
    Executive Editor, PARADE
And in keeping with the spirit, we'll offer our apologies for shooting from the hip where Previtera is concerned. We'll admit to being more than willing to blast away at anything federal in light of the current "troubles" affecting the CPD. The entire Department is on edge and it affects everything, including this place.

Well done Northside.

If promotions were legit you would have retired as chief of dicks at least. You fought the good fight.

Privitera the former Secret Service agent has to be greatful that you checked things out.

his choice of words was bad but i don't remember the class in the academy where they taught us to "take a bullet" instead of taking cover.
from a copper that does run to the sound of gunfire.

SCC I hate to say it but I cal;l BULLSHIT! This guy was stroking his own ego and it blew up in his face. So now the apologies. TYPICAL. Whether taken out of context or not the whole statement of ""Cops are trained to retreat when gunfire starts, but the Secret Service has to stand tall and go into the gunfire." READS LIKE IT STATES. He has ZERO respect and was doing nothing but chest bumping himself. BAKC TO YOU SUIT JAGOFF!

So often the Secret service is running towards hails of gunfire. The average beat co in America's big cities runs at more shots fired calls then all the of the Secret Service combined. I wouldn't give this asshole any amount of apology

As the Vice President of the Police Survivors, I accept the apology posted for the comment that the police run for cover, etc. etc.

However, if anyone stills believes the police are cowards, look us up on our web site at: thepolicesurvivors.com or meet with us and I'll introduce you to officers who survived gun battles, stabbing and other traumatic incidents.

Vice President
The Police Survivors

Scc, It's amazing how fast the response was to the article and quote by the Colonel. You got a national magazine to back pedal and run home with their tails between their legs!! This blog is a breath of fresh air, and allows coppers to speak their mind on issues that matter to us. I know you've heard it a million times, but why can't we use this blog to unite the men and women in blue and get some fucking respect in regards to this contract. Wishful thinking I suppose, but you have a captive audience at your disposal.

God forbid if a family member was victim of a unsolved murder, I'd sure want bulldog Northside on the case. He is relentless.

Although I take exception with the wording used and feel that Parade could have edited the article better, I still direct my displeasure at the author... Parade acknowledged the displeasure of those that brough it to their attention and issued an apology (not as half-hearted as some feel). Parade does dedicate a substantial amount of print to the "Officer of the Year" and likewise those awarded "Honorable Mentions" for their actions....

Ok after rambling on for a bit, Apology Accepted!!

There are some good feds, some bad, just like any dept. That said, how is something like that taken out of context? He simply put a voice to the attitude of MANY Feds.... Love how the treasury dept struts around like they are high and mighty, while they follow up on... OUR PINCH. Or how the FBI shows up to the area to get... OUR backup for their target. Or how the Bank Task force is totally dependant on OUR case reporting and flash messaging--- banks are held up right down the street from their feebie surveillance... Or how HIDTA exists to make sure that the feds and local pd don't hit the same spots- tacit acknowledgement that we are BOTH capable of enforcing laws against the same criminal group.. How many coppers do I personally know that left for the feds, knowing that IT IS A CUSHIER GIG?...SEVERAL! Many keep telling me how much easier it is!!! How many feds become coppers? I only know one, and he left because he grew tired of the idle paper shuffling. Some of these guys wear their ties a tad too tight, as they are cutting off oxygen to the brain, causing an errantly inflated sense of self-superiority....

Never apologize, SCC,like the Duke said, it's a sign of weakness. That article meant what it said because that's the opinion of the "feds" comparing themselves to street cops. Fuck 'em. I remember and was at the Airhart tragedy and I know who ran.

After reading this I am ashamed to be a P.O.
If all of you are that thin skinned that you bitch and moan about an article in a gossip rag-what do you do when the animal hurls actual insults at you.
shame on you.

The comment was bullshit, and he knows it.

Parade's 'apology' was bullshit. Don't give me that "But we honor officers every year crap." Glad it makes Parade feel better. An annual fluff piece does not make you a friend of the police.

I was never trained to run the other way, even when i was being shot at with a machinegun i did not turn and run.Can any one of these elite secret service agents tell us one of their war story's and live to tell the tale.C'mon tell us what "dive" style did you use-the Clint Eastwood (side dive) or the (high dive) where you jump in the air and land on top of intended target just after you ate that two pork chops and smothered mashed potato's dinner with the peach cobbler for dessert where you end up doing more damage than the assassin. No wonder they call you the secret service,McDonald's have a seceret sauce does'nt mean some one is dying to find out what it is.
