Step #1

We've been reading about suburban stations and out-of-state police facilities and it's amazing how similar the descriptions are of how they run their operations. They don't have homeless bums wandering about. Their doors lock. The building is adequately supplied with power, computers, furniture, etc. Everything a professional department might need, near at hand.

Obviously, the city isn't going to build us 25 state of the art facilities. They can't even build a Headquarters on the square and level (see the sagging floors and walls). But there are things that can be done that might restore some measure of security and professionalism to a Department just going through the motions.

Secure the stations.

That means the doors, windows, elevators and parking areas. All those old "facility inspection" reports that listed the faults that never got repaired? Repair the problems, close out the reports.

We aren't a social service and we shouldn't be pretending to be one. Homeless people shouldn't be wandering the lobbies, hallway, where ever. This "touchy-feely" crap has to stop. No one gets to sleep in the station - no more "warming centers." Set up a regular pick up time for Human Services and get these people gone. As many have said, it's a safety issue, it's a health issue and it's a morale issue.

A million stand-up roll calls and Inspectors coming to hammer the troops isn't going to improve morale or encourage officers to take pride in their service. But actually coming to work and not having to smell month-old dead ass, unwashed feet and infected festering sores might work a little more enjoyable for the people inside the station.

This problem began with being community friendly and the CAPS b/s. SCREW the community. I say lock the doors at the stations, have 311 do reports over the phone, and let the CAPS meeting be held at the local Church's Chicken parking lot where they belong.Im tired of having to be politically correct.

French parking meters that call the police when your time’s up

parkingmeter

What’s better than when the local municipality uses hi-tech against you? It’s all the rage in France, where parking meters are ruining people’s lives by calling the cops when time expires. So, instead of paying €2 for parking all of a sudden you’re whipping out your checkbook to the tune of €100 for overstaying the meter by four seconds. That’s good.

The tech here was developed by a company named Technolia. It’s raison d’etre is to create these little parking meters with a direct phone line to the police station. Overstay your welcome in the parking space by a minute and la police come a-knockin’.

I wonder how long till Mayor “Cut Services, Raise Taxes” Bloomberg hears about this.

You are absolutely correct SCC, regarding the homeless sleeping in the station being a health issue. It is alarming the number of patients now being admitted to the hospital that are testing positive for TB. These patients are immediately placed in an isolation room and we are required to wear protective clothing, gloves and masks. Since TB is an air-born illness and can be spread whenever someone coughs, sneezes or spits, everyone within the facility is at risk of exposure. Not only is the health of the employees being put at risk, but also family members and the community as well.

How right you are, SCC. Now try telling these facts to a few of the liberal supervisors here in a certain West Side district. One or two of these bleeding-hearts claim it's inhumane to kick the pissbums out of the lobby.

Nevermind that every copper working in or passing thru has to ingest the months-old funk, disease and dander that eminates from these dope-addicted, mentally-perturbed, unwashed, unkempt pillars of the community.

Disregard the fact that there's absolutley no clean air supply or airflow of any sort being pumped into the station to help circulate the stagnant, stale air.

Don't give a second thought as to why coppers working inside are chronically sick (especially in the winter months) when there's a minimum of a dozen homeless motherfuckers lounging about the floor of the lobby for hours and hours at a time waiting for the closest shelter to open it's doors to them.

Don't fret the fact that you're bringing home untold amounts of disease, sickness and infectious airborne pathogens to your wife and kids, courtesy of the HIV-positive, crack-addicted vagrants that semi-permanently inhabit the lobby just feet from where some of us work for 8 hours a day.

And on top of all this, please don't take personally the death stares some of the aforementioned dregs of humanity give you when you ask them to pipe-down so you can render official police service to the very few legitimate tax-payers that find their way into the lobby.

Our current feel-good method of policing since the inception of CAPS is a miserable failure and needs to be scrapped immediately. Ultra-liberal, college educated boobs on this job only perpetuates this dismal reality.

Officer safety and health is paramount - not something that takes the backburner to West Side kids having enough basketball rims or whether the homeless have a warm police station lobby in which to crash and bathrooms in which to get high. Last time I checked, there's an abundance of homeless shelters and Human Services to accomodate these services and requests.

Sorry for the rant SCC, but this type of shit has got to stop, regardless of how trivial it might seem to some people. Afterall, instances like these build complacency. And complacency gets coppers hurt or killed.

Take a look at the way the new stations, such as 10,16,18 or 20. The design has been compared to the Alamo, another place that was built as a mission but as a fort was not successfully defended. Unsecured parking, all that glass, bullshit artwork, security systems that don't work, CCTV systems that nobody knows how to work. With all that glass, how could you defend that building in the event of a major civil disturbance?

More thought was given to the landscaping than the safety of the personnel and the security of our personal property.

Maybe they can buy some locks for the station doors at the brand new Lowe's at 79th and Cicero before the place goes out of business in a few months. Daley was out there yesterday for the grand opening, bragging about how this was going to create jobs, etc.

Today, Home Depot said it's getting out of the "high end home remodeling" line, and is laying off 7,000 store employees and 2,000 non-store personnel.

With the condominium disaster, and the bad economy causing people to decide against cosmetic home remodeling, what a great time to open a new outlet for building material...

Caterpillar will also lay off one in 10 employees. No construction projects, no construction equipment needed. "Decimation" in the literal sense.

A Unit Rep of a Chicago Police Department district station wrote a safety complaint addressing exactly these issues a few years ago. The complaint went exactly nowhere. The commander answered it in typical police Command Staff doublespeak.

Nothing was done. In the complaint was written that these issues need to be addressed before a catastrophe occurs at the district station. Those words were ignored.

This security issue is more serious than the embarrassment of a 14 year old playing police for a few hours. We have unsecured facilities. We have access open to anyone bent on mayhem. We have prisoners in very close proximity to armed police officers and civilians and NO facilities in which to lock our firearms.

It was said then and is true now, the situation is serious and is a catastrophe waiting to happen. The same conditions exist at many district stations.

What do these "leaders" down at 3510 S Michigan need, a blood bath at a district station before they take the issue of security seriously?

As it is, a 14 year old kid embarrasses them and they are tap dancing all over the place making up bullshit to cover their ass for the lax conditions that allowed this 14 year old to enter a marked squad car as partner to an on duty officer who should have known better.

I can imagine now that the typical knee jerk reaction will be to force us to show ID cards or some other nonsense reactionary response. This still will not address the shabby security conditions which exist in most district stations of the Chicago Police department.

The obvious solution is to go to any medium suburban police station which is secure and well thought out and hire that police chief to come and try to fix our miserable security conditions.

Tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars of Homeland Security money has been spent here and the police stations of the CPD still are in the 1950's as far as security is concerned. The few new stations built in the past 10 years are better but overall there is no cohesive security strategy.

News media only has to try to enter any of the older police stations to prove these statements true.

Sorry, not true. I'm 4 years retired and it was a problem from day one at the Academy!

Every District or unit I ever worked at in the CPD had security problems at various levels. Whenever they were addressed, the COMPLETE solutions were rejected somewhere in the chain of command, usually as being too expensive. A less effective, less expensive and more temporary solution would be implemented instead, that would somewhat appease the complainer, make some white shirt appear to be a competent boss and life would go on. And this includes pre-Daley.

SCC A side note about homeland security. Did you know that US Postal service delivery trucks (vans) do not have license plates? essentially anyone could buy a white van put US Postal service stickers on it, drive and park where ever they want. They could park it at the airport, school, police station, or in front of any federal building filled with packages (explosives) and blow up the thing. I was shocked to see the delivery vans have no plates and see this a huge hole in homeland security.

This Department is what I call a BAND-AID BUREAUCRACY. My astute observation has always been that when a problem is identified, (ie exposed by the media), a 'band-aid' is immediately applied and remains on the problem until it is needed elsewhere. This means invariably that manpower will adjust to 'fix' the problem TEMPORARILY and move on when everyone has forgotten about it or until the original problem resurfaces.

This attitude must, and probably will, change however, due to the "ugly Vincent Richardson incident".

When it's finally decided that hiring will continue there wont be any decent people applying. It'll all be shit heads wanting to wear the CPD uniform that has been disgraced so much it's now embarrassing to put on; and they'll get the job too..for any number of reasons...and so we have our vicious cycle of incompetence.

To all the young officers - get out while you still can.

In 016, we have found citizens parking their cars in our lot and heading to the el station with their luggage going to Ohare airport. Yeah, we write them tickets but how many are we missing
? ALL garages need security gates. Our cars have been vandalized many times. Signs are up stating who the lot is for but no one reads anymore I guess. When CO R.P. was in charge he let anybody that was coming to a large meeting, park in the garage with instructions NOT to ticket them. There is no concern for our safety anymore only concerns that the CITIZENS are kept happy. I can't wait to retire.

By allowing this kind of activity in our "house" we are not commanding respect from the natives.

Your point about homeless persons not belonging in police stations has merit, but don't place the blame on the chronically mentally ill and/or addicted homeless.

Look at the Mayor who decided last week to close five (5) community mental health centers that provide treatment and medications to the chronically mentally ill to PREVENT them from ending up in your stations.

Not for profits that work with the homeless population on affordable housing, health/mental health treatment and basic shelter care are really struggling to keep their doors open.

Private foundations who invested their endowments in the stock market and lost large amounts of money have been forced to cut back their support to many of the programs who work with the homeless.

I agree with you in that the homeless don't belong in police stations without clean bedding, food, medical care and surrounded by people who don't have the training and compassion to deal with them.

Advocate for the homeless in productive ways.... work to help improve their quality of life and you just might find that you will feel accomplished instead of angry.

How often are you in the crapper with your duty belt around your ankles (gun included). Unauthorized individuals in the station can easily kill you or disarm you when getting caught with your pants down.

Money, drugs, guns or any type of evidence can be snatched off the front desk or interview tables with all these unauthorized individuals walking around in the station.

How often do you lay your wallet down, gun, etc on the bench next to you in the locker room. Maybe you get up to walk over to the mirror or sink or your distracted by another copper talking to you. An unauthorized individual could easily sneak by and steal your stuff.

How about you being an officer and thinking your safe and surrounded by other officers while in the "secure" station, let your guard down a little bit, of course less than what you would do on the street and some unauthorized individual with bad intentions gets the drop on you, your partner and other coppers in the room and shoots each and every one of you.

I can go on and on but you get the picture. The commanders and the departments should be and remain to be proactive when it comes to station security. Its so fucking embarassing how the security is right now in the station parking lots and inside the station itself.

Some of you guys crack me up. Safety issue? What, someone might get a gun and take a shot at you?

Try being on the street for a minute clowns. The uniforms on the street are targets every minute of every day for anyone who wants to take a shot.

How is a station ever going to be less safe than the streets?

Unreal.

And then what happens when the stations are secure? If someone wants to target the police, they will still be able to target the police. A few years ago on the east coast a deranged teenager walked up to a police station and shot and killed two police officers in the parking lot.

Was there some unaddressed safety issue there?

This is not a safety issue. Its a convenience issue. For convenience, I'll stand with any of you in having stations closed to the public. Just don't mischaracterize this as somehow being a "safety" issue, when the real police are actually targets outside those walls every minute of every day.

This is a classic example of a fish rotting from the head down.

The blame has to start with the Mayor.

Instead of viewing the Police Department as a vital entity needing competent management to ensure public safety in ever-more dangerous times, he continues to see the Police Department (and every other city agency) as nothing more than a big dollar job pool for his friends and political rewardees.

The issue of homeless in the stations was known to everyone that spent any time in the Patrol Division.

Yet the commander of the Patrol Division, Commander Clueless-(with 5 brothers), did nothing to address. As did countless others.

The list of incompetent people promoted to command position goes on and on. Like the last Chief of Detectives......

There is a order on unauthorized persons in the work place. Read it and enforce it. This is a safety issue. FOP, where are you????

When J-Fed came in he purged the department of most of its experienced command staff. While some of them were not the sharpest knives in the drawer, they did have a lot of time in various areas of the department and they knew of where the doors and buttons were. Not any more.

What happens when J-Fed leaves?? Who is there in this department that has the brains, ability, and leadership to right this ship? The first thing he/she will have to do is get a totally free hand from the mayor. Without that, there is no hope.

I think that most Chicagoans are starting to see that under RJD, Chicago is no longer the "City That Works."

Any have-way decent person could unseat him. We need him out.

You all might as well save your comments and your breath....Daley is not going to spend $1.00 on any police station security......let me re iterate---Daly is NOT going to spend $1.00 on any police station security. These stations have been like this for years...some over 10 years and nothing has been done about it since and why would you think anything will be done about it now?? In 025 they haven't fixed the fucking floor in the vestibule in over 10 years that had the broken tiles...and if you think I am exaggerating...ask someone who has been there that long...they just now started to fix it...but of course after putting concrete in over a month ago...they still have not come back to put the tile in we walk through the garbage chute area...and were actually walking through the elevator for a couple weeks!!! They also just recently put a door in at the bottom of the stairs in 025 because the fire marshall came out....there hasn't been a door there in 10+ years!!!! now it's a fire hazard???!!!...ANYONE can walk into that building...ANYONE...they garage doors are left open all day and all night....right where the lockup(s) are...anyone can get in there and cause a problem....The sally port doors in 016 do not work and haven't worked in years!! the Watch Commander(s) park their cars in there and wash them..instead of the officers using them for their safety when moving prisoners....the fucking watch commander(s) park their cars in there!!! Thanks for thinking about us and our safety...I challenge the Superintendent or Daley to visit 025th dist and feel free to walk around and see how far you can get....walk into the garages...take whatever you need...walk downstairs...nobody's watching....go into the locker rooms...hell walk upstairs in the detectives unit...put a bomb in the building....NOBODY would know you are there.....Safety?? Security?? start with locking the fucking doors and garages and making the ones you have operational so the coppers can use them!! put fucking electronic keypads on the doors so you can key in a code to open them up instead of these fucking cards in some districts...In 015...you can't GET OUT of the lockup unless you have a key card....I mean officers!!! that's VERY unsafe!! Fire, Fight, etc....you are locked inside!! GREAT IDEA HUH??? Change that to key pads so you can get in/out morons!!

--taken from police news website--
--www.policeone.com--

In the wake of the incident, top Chicago police commanders met Monday to talk about how such security breaches could be prevented, said Monique Bond, spokeswoman for the department. Police will look into how the boy obtained the police uniform but say the incident may have been prevented if other officers had earlier noticed he wasn't wearing a police star.

"We need to identify ... what procedure was not followed," Bond said. "There are strict uniform guidelines and there are measures in place specifically designed to ensure supervisors check to make sure that uniforms [are in] compliance."

Most police districts are relatively open to the public with few if any metal detectors at entrances and random checks of identification.

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue, while acknowledging the incident was embarrassing, called it a fluke and not indicative of a wider security problem.

-------

First of all;
Mrs. Bond, if you ever read the daily teletypes, you would see the massive numbers of lost/stolen stars, shields, and id's reported on a regular basis. Not to mention the relatively easy fabrication of our stars (they used to be offered on ebay). Yes, stricter guidelines MAY prevent a 14 year old from patrolling with a partner for an entire tour and making arrests, however, strict adherence of personnel wearing stars and id badges will not thwart an intelligent person or group who's purpose is to cause catastrophic damage to structures and massive casualties!!!!

Second;
Mark, you are modest by saying this is embarrassing. If this article (WWW.POLICEONE.COM) is accurate in documenting your summarized statement which reads (this incident was a fluke and not indicative of a wider security problem), then you sir are grossly negligent. I know it has been years since you've had to work at an Area/District, but nothing has changed since before you got anointed president. You know that there is NO security in our districts/areas and the surrounding grounds, structures, equipment and vehicles. You have been given the responsibility of representing the core thoughts and beliefs of you members.

How many of you believe that this incident is a fluke and not indicative of a wider security problem?

Station Security???

Let's look at the 011th District...

DESK AREA/PUBLIC ACCESS
No security gates or restricted access points to prevent unauthorized people from entering the desk and processing areas from the front public lobby.

Access to public restrooms from the front lobby is through an unlocked gate which also allows unrestricted access to the lock-up entry door, the stairway leading upstairs to the detective division, the stairway leading downstairs to roll call room, the auditorium, range and the locker rooms.

BACK DOOR AREA
The back door has no security features at all. It provides unrestricted access to anyone and everyone (including a guy who was high and bum rushed through the back door several years back, injuring some P.O.'s who were writing up arrest reports at a table in the hallway).

REAR SERVICE DOOR
The rear service door by the alley does not lock and is unsecured. It provides unrestricted access to anyone and everyone... from police personnel to janitors to delivery people to bums in the alley. From that entry way there is ready access to the lock-up entrance door, desk area and processing rooms, the 2nd floor and the basement. It would be very easy to come and go undetected from just this one doorway alone.

OVERHEAD GARAGE DOORS
The garage door openers don't work half the time. Even when they do, there is no restricted access to gain entry to the garage... then the lock-up entry door... from the outside.

THE LOCK-UP
Did they ever fix the broken lock-up emergency alarm that hasn't worked in years?

The gun lockers (for arresting officers to secure weapons prior to entering the lock-up) have been broken and inoperable for well over 10 years... maybe 20 years.

THE BASEMENT
Let's look at that for a moment... perhaps the weakest link.

One can enter the basement from an unsecured exterior door that leads to the parking garage.

The basement is wide open from the police side of the building to the court side of the building (where offices for social services, probation and other such functions exist. There is unrestricted and free access for any person that comes to the basement on the court side to just walk over to the police side. God only knows who is coming and going through our side of the basement on a daily basis.

There are many nooks and crannies that are unsecured in the basement where unauthorized people can hide virtually undetected if that was their intent. Check out the open public restrooms next to the auditorium , as just one example.

Don't forget the "toys" we have stockpiled the basement. What would happen if some dedicated evil doers scoped out the real estate and decided to bum rush the room where the "green guys" have all their stuff?

SECURITY CAMERAS
What security cameras? There are no security cameras or monitors for desk personnel to monitor checkpoints, exterior doors, exterior perimeters of the station and parking lot, the stairwells, the basement area, offices, range or other areas of the station. If you look closely, you will see that there is still evidence of cameras that were installed in some (not all) of these areas 30 years ago. Of course, none of them work today.

That's ok though... the desk officers have the modern technology to monitor other security cameras... PODS... They have a mission to catch "Whiskey Willie", "Loosey Larry" and the rest of the bottle gang out there doing their thing. Who's watching Fort Harrison though?

HOW MUCH MANPOWER IS NEEDED TO PROPERLY SECURE THE STATION?
If the city doesn't want to spend the necessary funds to insure the station has the proper doors, locks, limited access control features, interior and exterior cameras, and other necessary security measures to properly secure the facility... then...

The bosses will just have to down a few cars to assign officers to "stationary security posts" throughout the facility to provide the security that is both reasonable and required for a police facility.

Do you think another watch commander, desk sergeant or desk mouse will want to be blamed and punished if we have another goof-up due to poor security practices?

Actually, security staffing may not be a problem. Since there are so many down cars in 011 with no pool cars available, the bosses already have people available for these security posts.

EXPLOITATION OF SECURITY FLAWS
The big boss says on the news that they don't want to exploit security vulnerabilities of police facilities. How about if they stop ignoring the existing issues which have been reported over and over? When are they really going to do something about them? These problems didn't just fall from the sky last week. They are the results of years and decades of neglect. Problems do not fix themselves if ignored. Maybe if publicly shamed, something will finally be done to address our security flaws? Don't hold your breath waiting though.

What will it take to really fix this stuff? A terrorist act? A police officer killed or seriously injured? Don't think for one minute that any precious Olympic monies from city coffers will be used for this. It is unacceptable to cry poor mouth for decades and just ignore these critical issues. Maybe a few less flower pots and wrought iron fences... put the money where it is needed.

THE NEXT GREAT CHICAGO FIRE WILL NOT START AT 011
Look at the upside though... the city just installed a brand new fire sprinkler system in a parking garage that is literally falling apart. They also installed a brand new fire alarm system in the station, which is also falling apart. (Can you spell "pork contract"?)

The city seems more concerned with protecting the building and parking garage from fire than they are in providing a safe and secure work facility for its high-risk employees.

There are a few cows wandering about 011, but no officers named O'Leary. At least we are safe from fire... lol.

He will then retire with a fat pension and a seat on the Board of Directors for all his years of "sacrifice!" Anything the FOP and the City like "IS BAD FOR YOU!"

Hey, boys and girls, this 3rd District fiasco has to drop right at the door it where it belongs. The Watch Commander. Read your Orders, I'm sure they haven't changed that much since I left. The WC has to take the heat on this one. Possibly the Sgt. who had these 2 on his log, depending on his contact with them. Although a lot of people could be dragged in this mess for "Ramifications", not using common sense is still not a Violation, or is it?

Retired almost 12yrs.............

Too bad, you knew that city living was more costly than the suburbs when you took the job! You dont like lack of manpower and the unsafe working conditions? Too bad, the city is nearing bankruptcy! I completely agree. This department should start by fixing the symbol of our police department, the "star" we all carry. How could anyone respect us with that pathetic thing? Even when it's brand new it looks fake. Just about all of them that I have seen have letters missing, or the lake is gone. I'm embarrassed to show my star to people. Policework is a lot more than having a star but how do you expect the public to respect the police when the symbol they stand behind is made half ass....Bring back the old star!!!

How is it any worse that a police station has to allow bums in its lobby versus any other public building?

I don't have a major issue with sweeping the bums out of public buildings and getting them to some kind of shelter, but the courts are going to look at that very closely.

here in my area the courts decided that the public library could not keep the bums out even though the smell from them was driving the public away and making the staff physically ill.

I was detailed to the Third Dist for a while. Let me tell you, that desk crew COULDN'T GIVE A FUCK! You could not PAY them to care less. They put the D in de-policing. I asked one of them so I could get a radio. She barely looking up at me from reading her magazine to tell me to get the key myself. She had no idea who I was. I went behind the desk and started to open draws til I found it. I could have walked off with every last radio and they never would have known! It got so bad that the Cmdr had to put something in the CO book admonishing the whole crew for ignoring civilian walk ins. This whole thing with the kid does not surprise me AT ALL!!!!

1/27/2009 01:54:00 AM

Same thing happened to me in 007. Very lax. Civilian dressed people constantly going behind the desk; into the radio room; using computers; faxs; copiers. I was just visiting and I could not identify these people as Police officers.

People have been complaining about the inadequate security of department facilities for years and nothing has been done about it but now because of this national embarassment the department will finally to action.

Typical reactive CPD!!! The worst part is some poor sap is going to have to take time because of the failings of the CPD upper management. Anyone who does anything more than show up to work and take up space these days is completely crazy.

1/27/2009 01:35:00 AM

Policemen have rights to a safe, healthy work environment. Hire a fucking lawyer to take care of this. In my job, we can refuse to interact with anyone who is sick or has a communicable disease. You should have that right as well. This politically correct bullshit needs to be returned to it's proper place. It doesn't belong in the police stations.

Yes 4:42am; is completely right, this place is disfunctional and many inmates really are running the asylum. Thankfully we still have some old school bosses with a brain and logic, but they're burnt out, and are somewhat afraid to speak out. it's gonna take a crazy mental homeless bum that the CPD allows to hang out in their building to go off on some innocent citizen making a report. Lawsuits will fly (on both sides....the poor citizen who was killed and the family of the crazed that all of a sudden appears like they care for their nut relative)...MAYBE, then maybe IDIOTS who have the power to change things will finally change things. Keep the doors locked and secured, everyone wear proper ID and if you have no business in the building, i.e. citizen making complaint or arrestee, get the hell out.

Here is another security issue: I am retired cpd, flew into midway the other night from Vegas (Lost), but back to the story, I noticed no coppers around,so I went to the office to see how everything was going. Talked to a female desk officer who told they only had 3 officers working! I thought she was full of shit,so the next called I called my ex partner a unit rep for 051,who is on the medical for an injury. He told me that since miss ellyn came in she moved a sgt who bid in,then he rebid with more seniorty but she would not let him back result he is suing and get this the city will pay him time+1/2 for every hour he is gone due to her negligence. Next she did the same thing dumping a female that was a close friend and even though the fop and management and albor affirs agreed to let the female return ellyn did not let her! It gets better she cut every extra hour of overtime placing the airport employees, and all the flying public in jeopardy. the rep when he returns will go forward with a major safety complaint. I thought STEVER PETERSON who I worked for at O'Hare was in charge of this section! Steve always looked out for his coppers and safety was job #1, Now I guess the C.O. at midway will just cause another embarressing situation for the city as she has done in other districts. Was this not the same girl who let crump-hales the goof commander from 003 fly from the gun incident? According to my friend if any copper gets hurt there the safety lawsuit brought personally against her will bankrupt her and the airport! Whatever happened to bosses who took charge and stopped someone bent on destruction like ellyn?

Most suburban departments have Citizenb Police Academys instead of CAPS. Attract decent, committed citizens, educate them, use them as a resource. We have CAPS, bumbs and people that attempot to expolit their CAPS involvement in the community for their own benefit.

Several of the letters have fallen off and it is just embarassing. I will pay to have it repaired, any idea where that can be done?
Anyone, anyone?

Use one of your kid's black crayons and rub in where the letter was.
I dare you to tell the difference on mine.

SCC - I really hate to say this, because I love reading about you guys and really have a much greater appreciation for what you do now.

But perhaps you should have a section of the site that is password protected for P.O.s only. Some of the stuff about particular stations and their security failings really do not need to be public knowledge.

Just my two cents. Love your blog and keep up the good work.

Not a P.O.

As you know, it's true. At the suburban PD I work at you need an access card to get into all areas of the building. Homeless people? We drive them to a homeless shelter. The suburban officers would not put up with what you guys and gals put up with. There would be a law suit for safety. The one thing that baffles me most is that there is not a bullet proof glass dividing the officers from the public. How many times has a nut climbed the desk in the first district and taken officers hostages? At least 2 times that I know of. I am sure there has to be more stories like this out there. You all need to have your spouses sue when things happen to you. I understand its hard to do things because of retalliation but how can they retalliate against your spouse ? They already have the worst punishment in the world-having to live in shitcago. What could be worse?

Why no widow has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city is amazing. You all work with the worst equiptment and sometimes partner due to lack of training. It's sad to say but some of the in the line of duty deaths probably could of been avoided with the proper manpower and equiptment. All you need is one courageous widow.

And what about the PO's who refuse to have a female arrestee searched before she is brought into processing and has been there for 30 mins or more before they ask for a search.

There are more safety issues that need be disclosed.

1/27/2009 02:47:00 AM

Maybe its not that we refuse to have females searched, most of the time it.s not easy to find a female P.O. to do the search. And when you do find one, occasionally they will cop an attitude as if its not their job.

Why do we have to deal with these filthy orthopods lounging around our house. Send 'em to the nearest firehouse and see what happens.

1/27/2009 11:09:00 AM

They do come to the firehouses and we send them on their way,"keep walking". The smart bums say "they sick" and the ambulance takes them to the hospital.

"Off topic MSF is already fucked up. Sergeants pushing for numbers at any cost. At least with the old SOS if you were willing to take risks you were taken care of. They pimp you over nylon duty belts and little shit but want you to go out and bring in numbers."

Guess what, bright guy? NOBODY TOLD YOU to go out and purchase that "cool nylon shit" that the Dept. does NOT ALLOW you to wear for PATROL DUTY, so if you want to bitch someone out about it, stay off the blog, tell it to the idiot staring back at you in the mirror!

Asshat!

Somebody has some splaining to do Lucy.

Here is a suggestion for a media sweeps, rating giant.

The station that does this will win the sweeps hands down, viewership will be off the charts.

Do an investigative, undercover piece on the security of Chicago police and government facilities. You might be shocked and alarmed at what you discover in the process.

Send an undercover reporter to probe and violate police stations, gas pump facilities, motor pool areas, headquarters, area garages, detective areas, the academy, O'Hare and Midway Airports and the Jardine Water Filtration Plant.

Let us know what you find and tell us that we are whining about the inadequacies of security in Chicago. All city residents and visitors will Thank-You.

This could possibly save untold lives someday and serves the greater good of the public at large.

Truth is Police Stations were always a gathering place for homeless, and troubled people. The old 18th Dist. The Old Maxwell St Station, 12th dist. always had a lot of people sleeping on the stairs etc.
I am not saying it was correct, but that's just the way it was.

Does anyone get the subtle impression that Ron Huberman is the next defacto Mayor of Chicago?

He is being groomed for the position and has functioned as the head of the CTA, Mayoral Chief of Staff, OEC Director, CPD Deputy Superintendent and CPD patrolman.

It is quite obvious that the Mayor loves him and the business community loves him.

I am venturing to say that Mayor Huberman will be a reality in the next couple of years.
